Like a slightly more sardonic, decidedly Californianized Undertones, the Descendents ran the gamut of adolescent interest, from girls to, uh, girls. And they matched that wide scope with an equally wide array of three-chord tunes. So why is this such an essential record? One word: Milo. Singer Milo Aukerrman--who really was off to college after recording it--yelps "I'm Not a Punk" and "I'm Not a Loser" with such desperation that it's almost touching. Then again, the nyah-nyah attitude that crops up just about everywhere else marks him as the sorta guy who'd probably pick your pocket as you were looking for a hankie to help dry those eyes. Pop punk that dosen't suck.......2007-07-16

The Descendants, at least to me, blended the line between hardcore punk and pop, which dosen't sound like they match. But only Milo Aukerman and his band could do it, and Weezer should thank them that The Descendants even released a cd. _______ influence anyway. THe Descendants were never about being hardcore, they were punk because even with the easy-to-miss pop sound, he cleary showed anger.

More on the singer. Milo Aukerman is one pissed off nerd, and that's cool. He actually was a real nerd (he quit the band to go to college), but a cool-nerd. So he was never about image, but irony is a _______, and I think that image made him a good singer. Of course, if he could sing. Good thing he did, because he sings about subjects most nerds (and teenagers in general) can relate to: Girls, Food, problems, and Caffeine.
He is one of the reasons that made The Descendants so _________ original.

The music is a blend of hardcore and pop. That sounds weird, but it works. IT's fast and aggresive, although the anti-pop sound is _________ history, replaced by pop guitars. Okay, that's kind of confusing, use sound samples (you have iTunes right?). THe music is really fun, so don't think it's sissy, because it's not. The rythems are just as aggresive as any song by Black Flag (the guitars are not, just the rythem). IT's very memorable, has a bunch of hooks, ah _____ it. Sometimes, it's not perfect, and it won't always grab you at any mood. I don't think it's worth a 10, so it's not getting one.

Really though, The Descendants were an excellent band, and they knew how do be funny and serious at the same time. This is another example of what music is all about (energy, you idiots).

SHUT UP KIDS!!!.......2007-02-05

Okay, first off, I'm well over 18, blah blah blah... next, just allow me to stray from the subject for one minute: HOW DARE YOU BASH GREEN DAY!!! THEY DID MORE FOR PUNK THAN YOU WILL EVER KNOW, SO SHUT UP!!! Now, as for this CD...BRILLIANT!! A CLASSIC! All the songs are good, and, in my opinion, this is the best descendents CD. If you like this, check out the ADOLESCENTS.

If you don't like punk, you won't like this...otherwise, this album is brilliant.......2006-05-03

First off, I can't stand people who don't like punk and yet insist on writing a review about a punk album just so they can bash the hell out of it, call it "generic", "uninspiried", and "unoriginal" (and any other empty rhetoric you can think of), and feel better about themselves. This is punk. If you don't like punk, then you won't like this, so why bother commenting on it. I don't comment on death metal albums because I don't like death metal. Let punk be already.

With that out of the way, this album is absolutley brilliant. It is a precursor to pop-punk, but make no mistake (as the kid below me did), this does not sound like the "very crappy generic" punk garbage you hear on the radio nowadays. The riffs are fast and edgy, but not as abrasive and harsh as a lot of hardcore bands from the 80s (i.e. Husker Du, Minor Threat, although I like them a lot too). Milo's voice is perfect for the music, and his lyrics, while they seem simple, are actually quite unique and incredible. Songs like "Suburban Home", "Parents", "I'm Not a Loser", and "Bikeage" are all excellent social commentaries about suburban environments, class struggles, and drug addictions. These guys sing about what they know, and they do it well. They didn't sing so they could get on MTV, like all those terrible "punk" bands do today. They're genuinely angst-filled and anger-driven, and should be praised for their musical honesty.

Lastly, yes the song titles have the suffix -age in them and "I'm Not a Punk" and "I'm Not a Loser" do sound like similar titles, but did it ever occur to you, fellow reviewer below, that this was done intentionally, maybe to give the album a sense of unity and continuity. There is such a thing as a theme on a music album, you know, it doesn't exist exclusively in literature. This album isn't overrated. In fact, I think it's underappreciated. Only 80s punk fans and people from SoCal really know about the Descendents, which is just a shame. It's some of the best punk ever made, no question about it. If you like this, get "Everything Sucks" and "I Don't Want to Grow Up".

A tad overrated.......2005-12-28

This album is fun and has a lot of good energy. At first it sounds like a great punk record, but as the album goes on you start to realize that this sounds almost exactly like New Found Glory or Green Day or Blink 182, all those very crappy generic modern pop/rock bands. Milo has good vocals though.

I have to say - what is up with all the songs ending in "-age"??? Myage, Tonyage, Marriage, Bikeage. Then you have I'm Not A Loser and I'm Not A Punk. Some pretty similar titles going on here.

A seriously overlooked punk album is "Land Speed Record" by Hüsker Dü. About 3 times faster paced than this. But this is still a good album.

I'm not a punk & I'm not a loser.......2005-10-21

This is one of the best examples of 80's punk music.
It's raw, fast, snotty, silly, angst ridden music, for and by, sububan rejects.
The guitar is a raw and savage downstroke attack. The bass and drums keep the music tight and melodic. And the vocals; Milo Auckerman is the best punk singer of all time, his raspy and melodic style of singing captures a full range of emotions, from rage to frustration, to heartbreak. But no, it's not EMO, it's punk rock, the way it should be done.

The Descendents are a good band, I think that the SST albums are better than the other 3 CDs that came out on other labels. I would get this as the first of the albums. even though this is good, I think the best one is definetly I don't want to grow up.

The finest skate/pop punk albums.......2003-06-14

These two albums are among my top 5 (I'm counting them as one though!) Songs about being a regular joe and tribulations of growing up; girls that you dig but don't dig you, dreams of assimilating with the normal american families, family tension, and clean fun. Punk without the politics and the fashions that make it weak. A collection of good summer time tuneage. Like early bad religion, black flag, or adolescents? You'll enjoy this.

You will never get tired of this CD.......2003-03-14

This has got to be one of my favorite punk CD's of all time-so many unforgettable songs to choose from. I went to the music store and brought this one pretty much on a whim-I figured I would get two releases for the price of one. I have probably had this CD going on ten years now and I can still listen to it and love it just as much as the first time I heard it. It is a complete classic-from the beginning to the end-it is so catchy, intense, and melodic. If this CD does not get you moving, nothing will. This is definitely a good CD to start off a punk collection with-highly recommended.

It Should Really Be Called Three Things At Once.......2002-07-17

This CD combines the Descendents first 3 releases: "Milo Goes To College", the "Fat" EP, and the band's first single (which is Milo-less). Since "Fat" and the first single were combined on the "Bonus Fat" release, I guess "Two Things At Once" is a fine title. Anyway, this is a classic release and if you ever planned on buying anything by the Descendents, make sure this is it. The music on here set the standard for virtually every pop punk band that has existed since 1982. "Milo Goes To College" and "Bonus Fat" are also available seperately on CD from SST but why buy 2 CDs when you can get them both for the price of one?
