Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.

Sarah's Best Easy Listening CD.......2007-03-15

Sarah Brightman's talent is limitless. Her soprano and/or alto voice is among the best and she lets it show in 'CLASSICS'. CLASSICS is a beautiful, easy listening, and peaceful CD. CLASSICS is one to listen to in tranquil or relaxing moments. "CLASICS" is a collection of great pieces of music written by great composers (Shuburt, Handel, Chopin, Puccini, and the like). I have listened to CLASSICS about 15 times now and it always puts me in a quiet and peaceful mood (I am ~50 years old).

Sarah Brightman is a Classic.......2007-01-02

Sarah Brightman is at her best in "Classics." From Dvorak's "Rusalka" (Opera B.203) to Beethoven's haunting Op 52, slow movement (Symphony #7), Brightman's voice and lyrical style are a joy. I particularly enjoy her performances of Schubert's Ave Maria and Andrew Lloyd Weber's Pie Jesu. This is a great add to my collection of serious music.

Not The Best - Not the Worst - From Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-30

After purchasing this CD for my iPod for iTunes, I must say that I'm a little bit dissapointed. 7 new recordings and 8 old ones, ones that I already happen to have. I do like the fact that they're all on one CD! Some of her new recordings, including, "Ave Maria", "Winter Light", "Alhambra", "Dans La Nuit", and the new recording of "Pie Jesu" are just too breathy for my taste. It seems as with every changing CD, Sarah's voice changes. I'm not saying that the result is bad; it actually gives the songs more of a dream like quality, but I'm used to the younger, more Andrew Lloyd-Webber integrated Sarah. Scooping continually occurs in new recordings of "O Mio Babbino Caro", and "Nessun Dorma". In some tracks from La Luna, like "Figlio Perduto", Sarah's voice is TOTALLY dominated by harmonizing recordings that sound almost mechanical.

OVERALLY - The new songs sound O.K. and the old recordings are just as good as they were back then. This album is still a great buy!

Nice Cover.......2006-12-27

I'm a heterosexual guy who's not an opera aficionado - I only mention these facts because I seem to be right in the bull's-eye of the target market for this product. Sarah B. has a nice voice and she's pretty. Both of these are featured prominently on this CD. The cover and several pages in the insert are devoted to what must have been a very long and expensive photo shoot (and Photoshop) of a semi-clad Sarah looking marvelous. (The CD also comes with a flyer so you can buy various Brightman "Classics" apparel - perhaps not for the heterosexual male).

As far as the music goes: not bad, not great. I don't claim to have the most discerning ears for this sort of music, but everything was OK by me. However, the pieces on the CD with which I'm somewhat familiar, such as "O Mio Babbino Caro," didn't sound quite as good as other versions I've heard (and that includes by Charlotte Church, not just opera stars). Also, the solo version of "Time to Say Goodbye" didn't sound nearly as good to me as the duet with Bocelli.

In sum, there were 3-4 songs I liked enough to rip to MP3s - which is enough so that I didn't feel ripped myself...

All my favorites. I can start the CD player, which is wired to speakers in every room of my house, and just let it play, along with "The Most Relaxing Classical Music in the World" and "The Most Relaxing Classical Guitar in the World." I enjoy an awareness of familiar and beautiful strains of my favorites all day long and never get tired of it.

My brother visited me recently and noticed it right away. That will be another order for this fabulour music.

I was not really a classical music fan but I am now. I purchased this cd for my 14 year old grand-daughter, not knowing we would both enjoy the music so much. She has always enjoyed classical music along with all of the other teen music, rap, rock, country, etc.
Also, it really helped being able to listen to parts of the music before purchasing.

I first developed a taste for this music a number of years ago when my daughter started playing in the orchestra. The reason I made this purchase however, was because I have a great deal of difficulty with anxiety and I was looking for ways to find help. I love these CDs. Nirvana made a lot of things irrelevant when Nevermind was released in 1991. Among the most unfortunate casualties caught inside the blast radius were the B-52's. Just two years prior, they had released their very first mainstream breakthrough album, Cosmic Thing. This album was featherweight, sun-kissed, playfully pansexual and, most importantly, danceable. Tracks like "Love Shack" and "Roam" reminded us there could be fun without responsibility. Alternately kitschy and lazy (I still insist that "Deadbeat Club" was a slacker anthem long before Beck's "Loser"), Cosmic Thing took the B-52's signature Trekkie-camp sensibility and slowed it down just enough to click on MTV and portable radios wonderfully. And let's be honest, anyway: would you rather road-trip to Kurt's sad refrain of "Well, whatever, nevermind" or Fred Schneider belting out, "The whole shack shimmies!!" at the top of his lungs? Lazy Days.......2006-11-22

This is an essential must have album from the '80's for your "spring collection." I have always loved the hamonies of Cindy and Kate, handfuls of honey in cups I must say and for all the craziness in all of us the "I-Am- really singing - Fred Schnider" I am sure I spelt his last name wrong.

The album starts with a full powered tune to get you in the mood - "Cosmic Thing" with Fred snarling about the "genuine faux pearl ring" he might get you if you shake your "Honey buns" Mid into the album we hear the radio friendly "Love Shack" and "Roam" and ends on a slower song "Follow Your Bliss" which is an instramental with Kate and bass player Sara Lee humming and awing.

A must have for die Hard B-52's fans. For those who love the power house Cindy tunes you'll love her singing in "Deadbeat Club" and "Love Shack." For the Kate fans you can follow her in "Bushfire" and " Junebug"

All the songs are great but my most favs are: "Deadbeat Club" "Topaz" and "Dry County"

So go grab this album and B-Happy! (stupid joke) :P

"Sit on the Porch and Swing".......2006-11-20

"Cosmic Thing" is The B-52s best known record, originally released in 1989, containing the hits "Love Shack", "Roam", "Channel Z", and "Deadbeat Club". I'm pretty sure "Bushfire" got some airplay back in the day too (at least here in Australia, anyway). It's colourful 1980s pop, and every track is fun and full of personality. I'm not in a B-52s mood all the time, but when I am, I can listen to the tracks on "Cosmic Thing" over and over. Being a kid in the late 1980s/early 1990s, the music of this album has a lot of memories for me attached to it (along with Phil Collins, John Farnham, etc) which helps too.

There's a lot more production and effects on this album than say, on the B-52s first, self-titled album, (which is more bare and minimal). It all adds to the catchiness and poppiness of the tracks, I think. There's a lot to like about this album. I love the harmonies between Kate and Cindy (the female vocalists) on "Deadbeat Club", "Roam" and especially on "Topaz", and their "go, go, go!" chant toward the end of "Junebug" is so energetic its infectious. Fred Schneider, the male vocalist, is a lot of fun as well, helping to make the famous "Love Shack" as catchy as it is. He's a character, he really is. The instruments are played pretty well, and their instrumental "Follow Your Bliss", though fairly simple, has just as much personality as any other of their songs.

A pretty good slice of 1980s pop music. A decent one for parties too.

Deadbeat Club.......2006-11-03

Deadbeat Club is my favorite song. I was 27 when it was released.
I'm now 44 and it's still my all time favorite. What a fun song and video!

The music on this disc is worth at least 4 stars, but the "anti-piracy" features are preventing me from slurping this into iTunes.

I'm shocked there aren't more reviews of "Cosmic Thing," but I'm happy to see the CD get such rave reviews here. Yes, this is light fare - danceable, quirky and worry-free pop. The CD was one of a few released in 1989 that was a great ending to a lousy decade.

I was excited about buying "Cosmic Thing" when it was first released because: 1. It was on a compact disc and not an album (CDs were still in their infancy in '89), and 2. I really enjoyed the video for "Roam" on MTV (truth be told, I wasn't too crazy about "Love Shack," although I found that a cute novelty song). Once I listened to the entire CD, I loved it (and I still have my original copy all these years later - in great playing condition despite being played numerous times over the years).

I don't know about anyone else but it takes a lot for me to like an entire album/CD. For any consumer to be able to hit "Play" and just let the CD go until it stops is saying a lot for the musician. "Cosmic Thing" passed that test for me (as a 13 year-old in 1989 and today as a 30 year-old).

Besides liking "Roam," I like the far-out lyrics of "June Bug" and I agree with our star reviewer that "Dead Beat Club" was the slacker song before Beck's "Loser" (The B-52's beating Beck by half a decade, although "Dead Beat Club" didn't catch on nearly as much as "Loser!").

I agree with the previous reviewer in that you can't hate this album. There's really nothing to hate - it's not serious, it's just a collection of really good pop songs.

Taken in one concentrated best-of dose, it becomes evident what a coup the B-52's pulled off when they turned their own concentrated craziness into genuine hits. This is some of the weirdest stuff ever to make the charts, much less be loved by the masses. It's all here though--the mad surf guitar of Ricky Wilson (and later Keith Strickland), the banshee wails of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson, and, of course, the, um, well, let's say vocalizing of freaky Fred Schneider. "Party out of Bounds" with a "Rock Lobster" on "Planet Claire," or "Roam" over to the "Love Shack" in "Private Idaho." B-52 is the bomb.......2007-06-02

Awesome compilation of the B52s kind of off-beat, wacky, yet lovable and totally listenable music. The lyrics of many tunes are weird but funny. Scneider's goofy singing style somehow works well too. Lots of tracks here, including lesser-known gems. Especially cool tunes: Rock Lobster, Private Idaho, Mesopotamia [kinda eerie in a way], Love Shack [probably the one with most radio play back in the day], Roam, and Good Stuff. But all are solid. Very good CD to pop in and just let play, no need to be anywhere near the skip button.

B-52's - 'Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation' (Reprise).......2007-05-15

Review number 62. Fantastic eighteen track retrospect compilation of this reunited TOP of the line '80's new wave band. As for this genre of music, it JUST doesn't get much better than this. I saw the B-52's play a free gig at an outdoor mall just last summer and it was honestly one of the funnest concerts I've attended in sometime. As for this CD, you get to fully experience once again the college radio staples and some of the band's lesser known goodies, like "Planet Claire", "52 Girls", "Party Out Of Bounds", the unreleased 'original' edit for "Summer Of Love", "Love Shack", "Roam", the awesome "Is That You, Mo-Dean?" plus two new cuts, of which both are good. What, no "Dance This Mess Around" ? That's my personal B-52's favorite of all time. Nonetheless, 'Time Capsule' is still highly recommended.

B-52's.......2007-02-03

I saw Rock Lobster done "live" on Saturday Night live back in the early 80's. They did a good job. I thought that they were just another Punk band. But they showed their Pop sensiblities with "Rock Lobster." It didn't hurt that it turned out to be one Major hit! Of course, "Love Shack" and "Mesopotamia" were not far behind. A classic album all the way around - Five stars for the B-52's Tan-Ru!! (whatever that means...)

Hair Today, Here Tomorrow.......2006-06-10

Every once in a very long while a thoroughly delightful group appears out of nowhere with something new to say and a distinct, immediately identifiable way of saying it. Such is the case with the B-52's who pull off a nearly impossible trick and make it look easy. For starters, they are musically intoxicating and certainly can't be topped for dance party appeal. The vocal blend of Cindy Wilson and Kate Pierson is a lovely, natural fit, and Fred Schneider's droll, spoken word additions provide an effective and often hilarious counterpoint. Keith Strickland knows that a band like this needs basic, pure drumming, nothing flashy, and he delivers. The late, lamented Ricky Wilson provided great retro surf guitar, right on time and target. The frequent use of left-field sound effects sprinkles the songs with splendid surprises.

The song writing, especially lyrics, is always slightly cracked and completely charming. Catchy tunes devoted to poorly planned parties, ruins in Mesopotamia, and making love in strobe light are delivered without irony; no matter how absurd the subject it all seems to make sense when the B-52's do it. As good as these individual contributions are, it is the collective vibe and sensibility that sends this group over the top, their Own, Private I Don't Know is recognizable from 100 paces.

While several anthology CDs are currently available, this one shines most brightly. I was considering the 2-CD compilation, Nude On The Moon, but decided against it after learning about the alternate mixes, etc. Time Capsule: Songs For A Future Generation has the absolute requisite B-52's hits you can't live without, and plenty more besides. Nice to know that future generations will have quality neo-absurdist surf-guitar dance party music to enjoy - they'll need it.

summer of love.......2006-04-17

This is worth picking up for the remix "Summer of Love" alone. Much like another song based on the hot season - Don Henley's "Boys of Summer" - the track is fast-paced yet has a haunted, melancholy feel to it, as if something is lost forever. Quite a departure from the kitschy party songs the band is known for.

This record shook up the snoozing world of rock in 1979, becoming a truly classic disc, one full of landmark moments and heavy with possibilities. Most "real" rockers in the late '70s tried hard to ignore the Sex Pistols and the Clash, claiming the punk tumult was a merely a fad; but fun-loving types couldn't resist the magnificent hooks and grooves of the B-52's debut. They fell into the "new wave" while dancing their tushes off. The magnificent "Rock Lobster" remains unmatched in terms of its relentless, spastic power to move one's feet; ditto "52 Girls," with its nod to '60s trash rock. A Cramps-ish guitar grinds through "Lava," which features his-and-hers innuendo-laden lyrics. "I'm not no limburger!" goes one line from "Dance This Mess Around," but you just never question why. My favorite party album! I found out about the B-52's after a friend suggested them, knowing that I'm a huge fan of The Cosmopolitans Wild Moose Party: Pom Pom Girls Gone New Wave NYC 1980-1981 another awesome new wave band. These two bands make you want to get up and dance!

Great Fun Album.......2007-02-25

I was not familiar with the B-52s music until I moved to the beach in the early eighties. People down there just raved about the B's and I was soon recruited. This album is great fun and has an infectious beat. I have seen the group in concert on three occasions. It was impressive how many of the audience, including myself knew each song word for word. It was always like a concert slash party. Buy this album for the unique beat and happy feeling it will give you. Stand out songs are "Dance This Mess Around" and "Heroe Worship" that is about a rock groupie who will do anything for the group. Cindy Wilson is the lead singer on both of these, and there has been nothing else done like this. Buy it.

Recommend this highly to anyone that enjoys their original sound. Sure their commercial music is fine, but this is the music that defined who they are and why I like them.

The B-52s: quirky, different, difficult to classify musically. Is it pop? Or rock? Or maybe something else?

Who cares! This is fun music! You'll find no serious message here. These songs won't cause the U.S. to sign worldwide accords regulating the production of CFCs; they won't feed a child in Africa; and they won't initiate peace in the Middle East. What they will do is make you forget about a world in which those things are a concern for awhile. The B-52s' world is filled with off-beat characters, including aliens ("Planet Claire"), obssessed girlfriends ("Hero Worship"), and feared crustaceans. Does anyone not love "Rock Lobster"? (Witness Peter Griffen's acoustic version on an episode of TV's "Family Guy.") Yes, there are strong sexual overtones. But, hey, isn't all pop/rock music about that these days? At least the B-52s lyrics are so cached in metaphors, there's no explicity. ("Uh-oh! Lookout! It's about to erupt!... Lava. Hot Lava.") If you have problems with metaphors of "negative" content, I suggest you look up the origins of those nursery rhymes you teach your kids. Gee whiz. It's all in fun.

I keep this debut album (and the B-52s' second one, Wild Planet) in my car and on my iPod at all times. If you want serious music, go listen to Lucia di Lammermoor. If you want fun time, feel good, party music, get the B-52s.

Wild fun!!!!.......2006-08-06

I bought this record back in 1979 or 1980 and I loved it for it camp sensibility, catchy pop and danceable tracks. This is a FUN album with great songs, especially "Planet Claire" and "Dance This Mess Around". Turn the volume on these tracks and blast back to New Wave interpretations of early 60's pop.

If you are a fan of classical music then you better get this set. Not only is it very cheap, 10 Discs for about 2$ per disk. Now where are you gonna find a deal like this. I actually found mine chaper, $20.00 even and the music is outstanding. If you had a very bad day and very stressed out, just put in one of these cds, lay down, dim down the lights and just relax. It really helped me out.

Still Stuck on Beethoven.......2006-08-22

I just recently started listening to classical music so I'm certainly not one to compare or critique the quality of this set. However, I do have a few comments...

My interest started in this genre of music because I'm researching my ancestry in Prussia and this is the music of those times. Never mind my ancestors were poor peasants who probably never got the chance to hear such wonderful music... when listening to these CDs, I'm taken back in time... to a royal court in Europe... to another place in time. The music is inspiring, relaxing, invigorating.

I have yet to listen to all the CD's in the set. I'm stuck on Beethoven! Wasn't he AWESOME!?!

I think this set is a wonderful introduction to classical music!!!!!
