Album Description
We are proud to present Gang Gang Dance's much anticipated second full length release entitled God's Money. With God's Money Gang Gang Dance creates a modern music which reorients the palette of electronic music into an organic context, manipulating sound, rhythm and melody in an almost mercurial manner. Painstakingly recorded over the course of a year at Junkyard Audio Salvage, the band utilized whatever means were available to them to craft their sound: drums of all shapes, sizes and circuits, various keyboards and synthesizers, midi-triggering guitar scenarios, vocals reconfi gured via a guitar effect pedal and even the occasional aluminum chair. Blending their hypnotic rhythms into a highly structured compositional style or soaring in the lofty heights of practiced improvisation, this recording follows in the footsteps of the bands previous output, all while marking new ground.
In between writing and recording God's Money GGD spent the last year playing to packed houses in NYC, Europe and on the road with Animal Collective. Exploding with an energy & confi dence rarely seen these days and coupling it with such a heightened level of musicianship the band has turned even the most casual of spectators into full on believers. With magazines such as The Wire, The Village Voice, I.D. & XLR8R having already run features on the band, the press is falling into the ranks of the converted.
God's Money is the height of GGD's uncompromising sonic pursuit which has spanned the better part of the band's fi ve year history. Some of this can be gleamed from previous groups the members have been in, including Cranium, Actress, Ssaab Songs & Angel Blood. Though God's Money may be interpreted as the band's high-water mark of sorts it is much more the raising of the tide as they continually to push the boundaries of the palette of sound itself with no sign waning.

A Record to Grow On You.......2006-08-02
The new offering from Gang Gang Dance needs more than a few listens to get into and to love it or hate it, if that's the case. Although the music is quite weird, the performance sounds very natural and effortless. Check out the inside of the sleeve and you will find images of mosques, arabs and machine guns. God's Money is a musical reflection of the world as we know it today, and it succeeds. World music indeed.
Very un-American.......2006-04-24
I'm coming a little late to the party here......but I just got "God's Money". For the first 15 years of my listening to experimental/electro, music like this was almost always from Europe, most likely Belgium or more recently, Japan. So it's good to see us Yanks catching up a bit.
At times the decidely avant garde vocals get a bit much for me and it occasionaly sounds like they're trying a bit too hard, but overall the music is gorgeous and simple/complex at the same time. I'd give it 5 stars but I'm feeling a bit niggardly. Overall a beautiful audio experience.
Ineffable.......2006-04-08
On God's Money, Gang Gang Dance manage to channel their diverse and seemingly contradictory influences (ranging from Kate Bush to dub, from Yoko Ono to ambient drone) into a seamless and organic whole. With a few exceptions the tracks flow one into the other almost imperceptibly. One could conceive this album as a single extended track - and with the way it breathes and pulsates and occasionally chokes and writhes - even as a living 'thing'. There is no 'noise' here that doesn't serve some purpose - in my own view, all of it invokes a subtle tension between immanence and transcendence, between order and chaos. And if I've used somewhat religious language here to describe what they've accomplished that's not an accident. It's that good.
One of my All-Time Favorites.......2006-03-05
Alright, listen. I am a pretty critical person, especially when it comes to music. The fact of the matter is, if you listen to a LOT of music, you will have a harder and harder time finding albums you really love, because the bar keeps getting raised in your mind. God's Money is probably my favorite album of the past year because it defies everything I expect music to be, but I can certainly still call it music without any hesitation, and beautiful music at that.
Anyone who is trying to put this in some stupid genre like freak folk or whatever is doing a huge disservice to the album. Firstly, it really doesn't sound anything like Animal Collective, or whatever else you are trying to compare it to. Any sonic similarites are coincidental - the intent of the two groups is completely different. Secondly, this music is best appreciated without any context, just on the merits of its composition, instrumentation and production. Don't even think about Brooklyn or stupid stuff like that. It really has nothing to do with the music.
If you are reading any of these reviews, and listening to the music, wondering why anyone would rate God's Money highly, you truly haven't understood the album yet. Yes, there is something there, you just need to discover it, and once you do you'll be amazed you ever lived without it. I really mean it - look how many reviews I've ever written for anything after using Amazon for like 6 years. It's that important to me to share this album with others.
Deftly Spun Chaos.......2006-02-07
An admitted novice to avant-garde rock, I hesitantly stepped foot into this world with the purchase of Gang Gang Dance's "God's Money." At first, I had absolutely no idea what to expect from this genre, and I was a bit afraid of what I would find. I had read reviews of GGD and others, and was hard-pressed to find a consistent feeling for what I would find upon a first listen.
No more than 15 minutes into this album, I was a believer, and I would even go as far as to say a fan. I have since discovered the likes of Excetper and Can, and am thoroughly fascinated by this emerging genre. Whatever you call it, be that Freak Folk, or New Weird Americana, whatever; its dang intriguing stuff. Enough of that, on to the music.
The album begins innocuously enough, with tribal drumming ushering in a pseudo-African chant by vocalist Lizzi Bougatsos. It is Bougatsos' voice that emerges as the centerpiece of this entire work, and it will probably be your appreciation of her vocal stylings (or lack thereof) that will ultimately determine your enjoyment of this record. There are echos of Kate Bush in her musings, with all sorts of tribal influences. Her voice is still used instrumentally in several tracks, but others allow her to take on a more traditional lead-singer role ("Glory in Itself").
The music itself, recorded over a one year period at New York's Junkyard Audio Salvage, is the musical equivalent of fractal geometry. There are no regular sides, no hooks to really hold on to, but every tiny piece is magnificent in its own right. Each instrument and vocal feels like a tiny piece of string, but they are all masterfully woven together by near-flawless production into a cohesive whole. It almost feels as if the producer took every piece this quartet recorded that year, smashed it all into tiny pieces, chose the best, and put them together in a new way.
And then there is Tim Dewitt's drumming. It has been quite some time since I've heard percussion as solid, inventive, and just plain cool. I found myself simply focusing on the percussion so much that I had to relisten to several tracks (i.e. "God's Money V") just to hear the other parts of the music. From deep steel drums to traditional kits, Dewitt has created a drumming masterpiece in God's Money.
All that being said, this is certainly not a record for everyone. As stated previously, an immediate detraction to Bougatsos' voice will almost certainly taint the entire record for some. For others, the "out there" nature of the more experimental tracks will steer them another direction. But for those who can shrug off everything else and sit inside this record, there is a marvelous world to discover in God's Money.

Album Description
The Fleeting Skies is a testament to an artist who is constantly willing to absorb new thoughts and translate them into her own work. Samara Lubelski is what some would call a lifer: a person who is willing to keep on making music, honing her craft because she can't conceive of not doing it. Take The Fleeting Skies as a kind of travel guide through her aural perambulations over two continents and with the help of a number of her friends. Lubelski is a native New Yorker who grew up in the haze of artist-infested Soho. Over the years, she has compiled an impressive resume that covers myriad genres: the avant/psych/folk outfit Hall Of Fame, bohemian German musos Metabolismus, indie rock interpretations with The Sonora Pine and off-world with Jackie-O Motherfucker, to name just a few. Joining her are two of her old chums from the Tower Recordings (PG Six and Tim Barnes) as well as guitar aficionado Marc Moore, who has had his hand in Cat Power, Lynnfield Pioneers and various other cookie jars. With all of her experience and skill, Lubelski has learned how to create atmospheres of depth within her pieces. You will be looking forward to the return of The Fleeting Skies as it settles into your memory.

Do not hesitate to buy this one!.......2005-05-28
The title track will go down as a classic of underground pop music; don't let it pass you by! It has the atmosphere of a true classic. All of the tracks are great, but this cd is worth buying for one song. The lp was first released on the DeStilj label, responsible for the stunning "Xiao" by Wooden Wand, as well uncovering 60s icons of "basement psych" like Michael Yonkers and Ed Askew. I feel cruel saying it, but she puts to shame another dabbler in the genre--Azalia Snail. And she surpasses even a large chunk of Barbara Manning's catalog.

Album Description
Webb's second release on TSR is by far the strongest he's made in his 13 years playing music. At 28 years old, having been an in-demand guitar and harmonica player, touring all over the country both as solo player and side man, and averaging a show a week in NYC over the last 3 years, TK came to this record as a man determined and you can hear it in the music. The resulting work is an almost instant classic; versed in the American musical tradition with perfectly structured songs littered with imagery woven out of everyday experience. His voice is riddled with the kind of gruff character that speaks volumes and contradicts the passive androgyny that permeates so much indie-rock today.

Alt Country Rocker.......2007-02-27
Phantom Parade is a good solid Alt Country album. There's a little bit of Bob Dylan, and a little bit of Steve Earle, but the sound is unique because there's a hard rock edge in the guitar.
Oustanding album.......2006-11-28
This album shows blues genius TK Webb going in a whole new direction. Worth a listen for anyone interested in good songwriting. one of the best albums i have heard in a long time.

Album Description
Hall Of Fame is a trio out of NYC comprised of Samara Lubelski, Dan Brown and Theo Angel. 'Paradise Now' is their fourth full-length since their inception in 1995. Recording for over a year at the famed Rare Book Room in Brooklyn (where Lubelski moonlights as an engineer) allowed the trio to take their compositions further into the ether, coaxing the finer elements of their folk-avant garde improvisational nature to unify with their ability to pen fully-realized compositions. This record typifies the kind of precision and subtle craftsmanship that exemplifies the honing of their abilities and the furthering of their artistic vision.
Though this recording is a more approachable and intimate window into their musical world than previous efforts, these folks are no strangers to the realm of avant-garde. Members of Hall Of Fame have collaborated with the likes of The Sonora Pine, Jackie O-Motherfucker, Tower Recordings, Tara Jane O'Neil, Thalia Zedak, David Grubbs, Tony Conrad, Metabolismus and more. In addition to their work as Hall Of Fame the members have independently released solo efforts and ventured into experimental film, studio production, documentary film and just about every other creative foray most could imagine. Each of the tracks on 'Paradise Now' is carefully written, recorded, mixed, edited and sequenced to carry you though from the opening note to the final reprise; not just a collection of songs but the creation of a piece that is much greater than the sum of its parts. With this album, Hall Of Fame have moved into a new realm
and they are beckoning for you to join them.

Don't pay attention to the silly title, this is an amazing record! Artanker Convoy makes it okay to want to "groove" all night. They are intense and inconspicuous, some even think psychedelic, but I would venture beyond that. It is hard rock and roll in a melodic disguise not to forget the two drums, the deep sax and the strident guitar, almost bizarre. More than instrumental rock this is a "no vocals" band, powerful and fun live, but better to listen to while you want to party alone, get lost.

Album Description
This is the first proper release from NYC's Psychic Ills, following a self-released 7-inch ("Mental Violence I") and another limited edition vinyl-only release (the 12-inch "Mental Violence II: Diamond City"). "Dins" takes the band well beyond their astounding live dynamic of circular rhythm and guitar theatrics. They seamlessly blend non-traditional instrumentation and studio improvisation with a surging rock dynamic into an incredibly heavy debut. Soon to be a staple for fans of Can, Terry Riley, 13th Floor Elevators, Red Crayola, and other forward thinking individuals.
Customer Reviews:
Many layered, molten, yet light & rich confections.......2007-02-17
Not a false step taken on this second record and first full-length from these artsy neo-psych groovesters. I mean those terms in a good sense. I learned about this band from a NY Times blurb, but the paper made them sound like Velvets on brown acid. But the trip these Brooklynites take shows they learned to avoid bad vibes of the dimmer days of the Factory scene. Explosions in the Sky or Yume Bitsu fans would like this. I find this CD lighter, more propulsive, akin to Oneida, Surface of Eceon, Bardo Pond, Kinski or the lighter moments of Comets on Fire or even Acid Mothers Temple.
In other words, more space-rock and compulsively repetitive than a doomier, dirge-heavy, gloomy writhe. It tends to soar on the even-numbered tracks and not quite lumber, for it moves, but in less dramatic, more introspective directions. Instruments take precedence, and this is a wise choice, as it gives center stage to the musical layers rather than a vocal posturing or lyrical posing. It enables you to enter more deeply into the tangles, striations, and mazes created with its intense, yet engagingly obsessive, sounds.
The two styles, warm and hot, seamlessly join-- congratulations to the producers and whoever mastered and sequenced this record. Holding together as a unified work, this is one solid recording that shows the potential of psychedelic rock continues into its fourth decade undiminished. This is smart music, but it wears its erudition with modesty. The band makes the tunes develop and unfold, and shifts attention away from themselves into the mental and spiritual realms they enter and draw us into after them. It runs smoothly and I will definitely be returning to this CD many times to come.
so confident and seamless.......2006-03-05
This is some great spacey rock! Something so confident and seamless about these songs and their delivery. There is this great ability to be spaced out and rock out all at once. Like they are channeling the legacy of Spacemen 3, Psychic Ills have made one of the most striking and satisfying guitar centered records of this young year. I love how they take from both the forefathers of psych as well as the seductive and slightly drugged out sounds of post-punk luminaries like Joy Division and Psycho Candy era Jesus & Mary Chain. The record has not one lull or weak moment. Songs flow right into each other. Whether they are swaying back and forth with a late night ease or turning up and blasting out bleached out melodies; they get it right with every twist and turn the record offers. I would love to see them tour with The Gris Gris as they both take a slightly different approach to psychedelic rock but share a level of excellence that's pretty hard to come by. Highly recommended!
The spirit of psychadelia lives on.......2006-02-20
The Psychic Ills capture the spirit of late 60's psychadelia and repackages it into a trippy multicoloured experience. 'Dins' is one of those albums that blurs the lines between spacerock, shoegazing, and psychadelia. Just think the mind expanding freak-outs of Spacemen 3 and Hawkwind meeting the neo-psychadelia of The Warlocks and trippier moments of The Dandy Warhols. Throw-in the dream pop of The Cocteau Twins and the experimental noodlings of Frank Zappa. 'Dins' is a trancelike cacaphony of sound and reverb, definitely one of the must hear releases of 2006. Tune in. Trip out.

Album Description
This is the debut EP from NYC process-oriented outfit Telepathe, a band made up of former members of Wikkid and Blood Lines. Four chanty-chaotic yet perfectly structured compositions that bring to mind such outfits as Can, Amon Duul, or perhaps even Gang Gang Dance. Joined by Lane Lacolla and Ryan Licero, they take the ensemble in an organic/electronic direction, creating music that's percussive, syncopated, and unconventionally danceable.
