About the Artist
What is Deridian? Deridian is a musical ensemble which draws from a variety of genres including rock, jazz, and funk. The song writing is primarily folk based, meaning the music was written to fit the lyrics and not the other way around. However, the main propellant in the mix is the use of rhythmic dissonance to affect as well as effect the listener. Much of the unusual rhythms found in Deridian's music comes from across the world; India, Africa, Cuba, Spain as well as some American born rhythms found in 70's jazz-fusion and progressive rock. Past Deridian was founded by Tristan Kromer, Markus Dorfmann, Lee Nadel, and Etan Sekons in 1996. The band was based out of New York and toured the local bar circuit as well as playing fraternity houses and college benefits. The band recorded it's self-titled demo in Park Slope, Brooklyn under the guidance of producer Rusty Cloud and engineer Jim Clouse. This demo featured a mix of genres from the disparate musical backgrounds of the four members. Tristan establishing a folk foundation with his songwriting while Lee brought in a funky groove which added dance potential. Etan added rock drive and dynamics backed by the powerful rhythms of Markus' fusion drumming. Despite some degree of success with their demo, the four band members parted ways in 1997 due to the various stresses of school and diverging musical tastes. However, Markus and Lee would continue to work closely together in various other projects such as the New York based pop band Synapse.

In 1998, Tristan Kromer reformed Deridian as a solo studio project and went to work. The goal now was to record a full length album at West Lake Audio's recording studios in Los Angeles using a host of LA's finest musicians. Producer and trumpet player Charles Moore took charge of the project, with Bruce Sugar behind the recording console. The players included Adam Rudolph, John Beasley, Dave Carpenter, Ralph Penland, and Leonice Shinneman for the main tracks. Additional musicians used for overdubs included Ralph "Buzzy" Jones and Paul Livingstone, the nine string fretless guitar player. The material for this album was more folk based and used more acoustic textures than the previous demo. The only electric instrument used was the clavinet, and only on one track. The diversity of the album is evident, from the rock driven Matchsticks & Lovers to the dance based pop song 57 Feet; From Double Dip's rhythmic and lyrical violence to for as, you are's smooth jazz inflected melody. The jewel of the album is clearly the first track Shanti, whose elaborate Indian percussion drive the simple lyrics home. Present Currently, the band has begun to tour on the basis of the new album. The main bulk of the live material is presented on the album. Still, some older songs are played as well as a host of new material. The live show is more improvisationally based and can lead to extended versions of songs. In addition, a full drum kit is used more requently than on the album, due to the nature of live performance. While the nature of a record can elicit more passive listening, Deridian's live show is geared for dancing. The aim of a Deridian show is an orgiastic display of physical movement.

Returning to the lineup are Markus Dorfmann and Lee Nadel. The two founding members of the band comprise what is, without a doubt, the tightest rhythm section around. When they play, the room itself wants to dance. Markus' powerful drumming and Lee's funky bass lines provide the basis for everything that the band hopes to accomplish.

Joe Caruso and his extensive knowledge of Indian and other world percussion is an integral part of the live band. In addition to his percussion skills, the live shows will feature Joe's use of a second drum kit to augment and play counter rhythms against Markus' back-beat drumming. This will allow the band to introduce the more frenetic elements of drum & bass music as well as African born polyrhythms.

David Epstein's piano playing promises to be the highlight of a live Deridian performance. Putting his extensive schooling to work, he adds a distinct element of jazz chromaticism and virtuosity to the music. His abilities as a soloist as well as a textural engineer are unparalleled.

Lastly, Tristan Kromer will continue putting his powerful voice to work as lead singer, while his fingers hammer out the percussive rhythms on his guitar which form the core of each song. As the musical director of the group Tristan wants to expand the group's material into the more esoteric reaches of musical genres while maintaining the pop accessibility which is so important.

The band hopes to be back in the studio by the year 2000 to record their new material. ARTIST/BAND: Tristan Kromer - vocals & guitars Joe Caruso - percussion & second drum kit Markus Dorfmann - purple drums David Epstein - piano & keyboards Lee Nadel - bass guitar
