Mark Nelson is a man of many talents, not the least of which is his beautiful slack key guitar playing. His timing and phrasing are excellent and you can tell the mele are played with much aloha and respect for the tradition. When slack key is played from the heart, it can touch the depths of your soul. Mahalo, Mark, for sharing this beautiful music with the world.

The Blues Explosion have gotten into a habit of following up their albums with B-side collections. Extra Width begat Mo' Width, Orange begat Experimental Remixes, and now Xtra Acme USA emerges as the child of Acme. This may be the boldest of the Explosion's follow-up releases, 19 tracks (plus a hidden surprise) consisting of remixes and unreleased cuts. Surprisingly, Xtra Acme USA doesn't sag under the weight of guest stars like dirty soul legend Andrew Williams or remixers like Moby and David Holmes. In fact, Williams's vocal turn on "Lap Dance" is hysterically dazzling and Holmes steals the whole show with his gospel-fueled remix of "Talk About the Blues" Unreleased tracks like "Wait a Minute" and "Leave Me Alone So I Can Rock Again" pack just as much punch--maybe even more--as the cuts that made it onto Acme. This may be the funkiest that indie rock has ever gotten. Amen! --Jason Josephes

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars the one.......2006-01-25

Easily the most accessible Jon Spencer album, best to start off here if you're new to the club.

I owned a couple of JS CDs before I saw them live in NY, and in retrospect I didn't really 'get' them till I saw their live performance. I thought all the chaos was made up in the studio but they do it all live, and live it doesn't seem like chaos at all, but very funky and very moving. Spencer is a rock genius. Long may he rock.

(aside: This has only the weakest connection to blues, like all his music does so don't get into Spencer expecting blues or I guarantee you will be disappointed. At least at first .... go see him live.)

5 out of 5 stars This is awsome.......2004-11-20

Okay I have only had this album for about three days and I have already played it about a hundred times. This album is great, pretty much all the tracks are good, and this album doesn't have any dissapointments. The best tracks are probably "Heavy"(remix) and Lovin' Machine. As wierd and almost drug indused "Magical Colors"(31 Flavors) is it's still great to listen to. Even though it is not in any way essential to the record, the hidden bonus track (which is a spoof comercial) is great. Maybe just because I like Spoof comcercials (I still have all the South Park Rob Shneider movie traileres). But any way, just get this to see what I mean.

5 out of 5 stars My current favorite.......2002-06-27

I own pretty much the entire JSBX catalog, but I must say that "Xtra Acme" is the one that I play most often lately. While "Acme" was a good album -- better than "Now I got Worry" and "Extra Width" -- I much prefer the alternate versions presented here. Overall, "Xtra Acme" has that same sort of experimental flavor and energy that hooked me the first time I heard "Orange" -- arguably the best album JSBX has made to date.

5 out of 5 stars Blown away by the BLUES.......2000-08-01

It is Awesome. If you have seen the blues live, then this is the cd for you. Very raw and more experimental then ACME. Just listen to it for youself and spread the word of the BLUES!

5 out of 5 stars None better.......2000-04-14

Support the blues in YOUR town! This record is stoopid-fresh, magnanimous in flavor, and simply one of the best discs I own. Most definitely the juice to get loose by. God bless Jon, Judah, and Russell. Amen.

Yet another mess of colors (emphasis on mess) from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion that defies any particular grounding. This time, with Acme, the trio's fifth full-length, the frayed punk tones are replaced by more of a Beasties/Beck/Dust Brothers/white-guys-gone-phat sort of thing, where rat-a-tat beats and bone-crushing, speaker-frying bottom ends collide with shards of sweet soul, gospel, country, blues, and even some pummeling stoner rock as well as Spencer's own wacked-out Presley-Jagger vocal spew. Including the knob-twiddling participation of Steve Albini, Calvin Johnson, and, predominantly, the Automator (rapper-rocker Andre Williams gets the title of executive producer, whatever that means), Acme is an orgy of noise that occasionally even resembles actual songs. Certain to dazzle some, certain to scare plenty more. --Neal Weiss

Tired of the same old thing? Than buy this CD now. I agree this type of music is not for everyone but if you have an open mind and like great rock music than check it out. Jon is a trip! I've seen him live playing with the Dickinson Brothers and he is so into it you get caught up in his enthusiasm. ACME is a refreshing change to the stagnating music industry.

        4 out of 5 stars Blues Explosion.......2006-07-08

The best blues explosion album. A lot of his stuff is all swagger and destruction, this album retains the attitude but you can tell they actually spent some time writing songs this time, and it paid off.

5 out of 5 stars This is Blues Explosion.......2006-03-29

This is no deviation. This is the realization of what they were trying to do with previous albums. The Blues Explosion has always been about being bombastic and ridiculous, poking fun at the id of rock, which is the id of music, and thus embodying it. Distilled swagger, more image less substance. What has less substance, more image, and more swagger than samples and layered production?

The lyrics are the album's real strength, coherent without sacrificing the band's chaos, the best of any Blues Explosion album. Nothing profound or particularly original, just simple rock themes distorted through the Explosion's filter.

Have been burning all my CDs to the massive HD lately; few albums get more than 3-5 songs burned. This one gets 12. BTW,if you ever have the opportunity, this band is one of the best live bands around.

        4 out of 5 stars Whoop dang-a-lang!!!.......2002-02-01

THIS IS BLUES POWER, and when I mean blues power, I mean you
can pluck the feathers out of my blowhole; the JSBE are here to PAR-TAY, y'all, and to get YOU in the spirit! I tell you: when my little baby heard 'Lovin' Machine' and 'Talk About the Blues,' all finger-lickin'-good funk 'n' roll blooz, I got out my big old stew pot and had to make a soup out of her. Some of these songs rock. Some of them RAWK. (..). But it all sounds good where the rubber hits the road.

4 out of 5 stars An overall fun cd to listen to.......2000-08-05

This cd is full of an incredible mix of music that stands by it's own. If you want something to fry your speakers and freak out to, or just to chill, buy this cd. This my first JSBX cd, and i can't wait to get my hands on another one. Songs like Blue Green Olga and Calvin are simply great songs, while attack litteraly is a freakish explosion of noise and base that's a substitute to caffeine and could really startle you if you're not ready for it. A few songs, like "do you wanna get heavy" kinda get lazy and boring. But the funk and bass of the album mixed in with some memphis blues and xperimental hip-hop are flat out creative and set a new standard. JSBX is, in my opinion, a pioneer band, and can't be imatated.

This is the best set of original, modern surf instrumental music that I have found. There are no bad songs on this CD, and every one is awash in guitars, reverb, and organs, combined with a strong melody and beat. If you are a fan of classic melodic surf instrumentals, such as Pipeline, Walk Don't Run, etc. (as opposed to the more aggressive style of Dick Dale), then you'll enjoy the music on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing album, beautiful music, great female vocals.......2005-11-05

This album "Swaddling Songs," and the CD release, is quite an impressive album, and it has some of the most lovely and beautiful songs I've heard, and the two female vocalists just have wonderful and beautiful voices, and that being Alison Williams and Clodagh Simonds. There's some outstanding piano playing on this album, as well as good guitar work, but it's the great songs that really make this CD special. As their name suggests, their are some "mellow" songs, but the singing is just so wonderful and beautiful, and Alison Williams just has a fantastic voice. There's also some very up-tempo songs, and those are excellent as well. There's not one bad song on this album, and I can see why it's considered a classic and highly collectable for people that are looking for the original vinyl LP. The new CD called "The Virgin Prophet" is definitely worth getting to if you like Mellow Candle, and I highly recommend getting it, you won't be disappointed at all. I give this 5 stars, because it's truly a masterpiece in my opinion. I could listen to this over and over forever, it's that good. Glenn Cypress, CA USA

5 out of 5 stars Sun Dial - 'Return Journey' (Acme).......2007-07-26

Whoa! First off, I could just kick myself for not listening to this CD sooner. As it's been sitting around in my computer room for at least two months. Total of seven superbly played full-blown psychedelia cuts that Sun Dial had recorded around 1990-91. Why hasn't this trio been better known? First off, I thought I was losing my mind when I heard this disc start off with a tune that was originally done by the little known late '60's band Open Mind, with an astounding take on "Magic Potion". Then there's the wailing "North Eastern", the stellar "Fireball", the foot tapping "Through You" and the epic, thirteen-minute "Sunstroke / Mindtrain" to cause you some even further brain damage. Who could ask for more? Line-up: Gary Ramon-guitar,bass & vocals, Anthony Clough-keyboards and John Pelech-drums. It rarely gets any better. So extrememly HIGHLY recommended, it hurts.

All I know is i got mine. You get to hear the classic "When the Night Comes" in three different versions from any released previously. The "Demo 2" version is the awesomest with it's extended guitar freakout which is as classic in simplicity as Dave Davies's on "You really got me". WOW!The rest of the originals are also excellent British rock and their versions of classics Shakin all Over, Man with Money and even their interpretations of "The Rolling Stones" (as The Pupils)are definitive. Get this at any cost but i recommend you shop around.
