Anyone who can't be moved by these songs.................2007-02-18
Anyone who can't be moved by these songs..........can't be moved. This is Freddy Fender at his best. My 5 year old grand daughter has been listening to him in my car on the way to school for about a year. She practically starts singing before the car is turned on and she knows all of the words. She will carry on my love for Freddy through at least another generation.
Tex-Mex superlative!!!.......2006-03-27
I've loved Freddy's style since I first heard him back in the seventies. His versions of Secret Love and Roses are Red are the best. I really love the Spanish versions after the English and vice-versa. Freddy is a real Mexican-American treasure.
Childhood Memories.......2001-01-04
Before the Next Teardrop Falls; Wasted Days and Wasted Nights; Roses Are Red; I have so many memories of sitting in the back seat of the car and singing along in my best Freddy Fender voice. Drove dad crazy, but those songs and Freddy's unique voice remind me of some of the most special times in life. It may be a Southwest thing, but this music gets into your soul and on these songs I feel like I am feeling part of Fender's soul as well. If you've never listened, REALLY listened, to Freddy Fender, give him a chance!

Obscure Gem from the "New Wave".......2007-03-15
I became aquainted with this album way back in 1980 when I received a maxi-single while working in radio -- it included "Ha Ha, I'm Drowning", "When I Dream", and "Reward"(not on the original LP). That it still stands up 27 years later is a testament to the talent of lead singer Julian Cope (who is still active). Cope's horn arrangements add power that was missing in much of the pop of that period. Good times, good times...
This Is.........2007-02-14
The most exciting album ever. It is truly a crossroadS recording of Disco meets New Wave. JuliAn Cope is one of thE most exciting People. I love him. He's a genius. He wrote a couple Of books about Brittan's(He's the best!) archeological lore, and he's too exciting.I lOve You SArolTA! Deal with it!.. this album reminds meOf what a pal.
Shot In The Foot.......2007-02-11
A great band with great songs. Yeah, I have all the 45's. What's with the horns ? They took bad advice at a critical time in their careers. I cringe when listening to this, knowing what could have been. I reviewed this only because I feel it could have been an important recording.
the songs shine through despite overly slick production.......2004-07-07
It took me a while to warm up to the production, which is very slick and artificial sounding, particularly the trumpets. but give it some time and it will grow on you. a better place to start is the piano comp. if you can find it, it grabs you immediately with a rawer feel including an organ sound that's not too far removed from the seeds. In anycase there's some great lyrics here and Copes writing is well worth checking out as well.

Perfectly Ordered Memories.......2006-12-28
The first thing that strikes me about this compilation is that the breakdown of what sound was doing at the time, for me, is dead on: Phase 1: 1978 - 1982; Phase 2: 1983 - 1985; Phase 3: 1986 - 1988; Phase 4: 1989- 1991. That would bring you, musically speaking, through the break of New Wave and the second British Invasion, on through a change from more pop sounding stuff through things with a harder edge. If you listen to the growling of say, Godsmack, and attempt to go to this, it won't work for you. Play this amid some Echo & the Bunnymen, (which it's closest to,) the Clash, (which this is somewhat related to,) and perhaps, Nick Cave. This was an astounding band for it's time, and falls directly in what was really a "New Wave": a distinct second British sweep of music that happened in the late seventies. Compare also to Bauhaus, Tears for Fears or early Cure, and you will hear it - a very distict, edgy sound, very, very different from what was popular in the States at the time, (depending on one's tastes, that would have been Elton John, Queen, Billy Joel or perhaps Styx, Lynyrd Skynyrd or Aerosmith.) This new sound took some by storm, for others, it took a little getting used to, but once you "got" it, it was magical (and far more rebellious and anti-social than Lynyrd Skynyrd ever dreamed of.)
On this CD, what stands out besides the obvious hits, are the drum riff on "Bouncing Babies" and "The Great Dominion" which has an early, mournful sound compared to the track right after it, a Phase 2 song, "The Greatness & Perfection of Love". At first listen, the latter seems like an extension of the former, but then you can hear the change when Julian Cope starts singing. It's lighter. "Sunspots" is a quirky and pop-py track and the end of "Reynard the Fox" is what I would most compare to some creepy Nick Cave stuff. (Recall that the Birthday Party disbanded and reformed as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds during this Phase 2.) This is very different from the track immediately following it, "World Shut Your Mouth", and in fact, "World" is the first track of Phase 3, the period of MTV play. (If not for MTV, most of us would never have heard The Teardrop Explodes.)
I think that put into its proper musical framework, this is an important compilation, You won't find these songs elsewhere really, barring owning all of the discs. When one 'closes one's eyes and thinks of England', besides the Beatles, one should think of Tears for Fears, Echo and the Bunnymen, the Cure, Bauhaus, and the Teardrop Explodes. "Safesurfer," the nearly-psychedelic last track on this compilation, should make the connection for you.
In reference to one preceding reviewer: regarding the "gay-ness" of the songs, well, music has changed. Bands didn't used to growl the way they do now. Perhaps we have Metallica, early death metal and hard core to thank for that, I'm not sure, but remember, most of that morphed out of the earlier punk of this period, (or even earlier, if you want to get technical.) Also, I'm female: Julian Cope, all slung up tight in black and wrapped around his mic stand was a pretty hot sight!
Never heard anything quite like this.......2006-07-30
I first heard Julian Cope via his stoner-rock combo Brain Donor, and when I went to check out his solo stuff, I was expecting something along those lines. Boy, was I in for a surprise! The stuff on this album could probably be best described as glossy new-wave studio pop. You could even say that it is, to use the parlance of our times, kind of gay. Ironically enough, its the gayest song on the album, the ethereal "China Doll" that is probably my favorite. Ordinarily, such a description would be a deterrent to me, as I tend to go for harder stuff with a little bit of grungy edge to it.
Cope's music has a distinctly quirky, whimsical quality to it, slightly reminiscent of the Flaming Lips or perhaps Peter Gabriel. There is not much brooding anger on the surface, and you could even say that his better songs are propelled by a sort of naive innocence. He has quite a flair for singing in harmony, as well as for dense, layered arrangements that seem nonetheless to leave space between the many parts.
To be fair, I've only owned this album for a few weeks, so I still expect to have some of the material here grow on me in the future. Having said that, tracks 9-15 are some of the most sublime, gorgeous pop songs I've heard in recent years. "China Doll" is an especially great ballad. "Charlotte Anne" is a funky synth pop number with very subtle layering of sonic textures. The chorus of "World Shut Your Mouth" goes "put your head back in the clouds and shut your mouth...", and upon hearing it for the very first time I was struck by what a great line that is. "Trampolene" is head-bobbingly catchy, as is the boisterous "Spacehopper".
The rest of album hasn't really clicked with me yet, but my budding fascination with this guy seems to give me confidence that I will learn to love it one day yet.
Great Compilation.......2005-06-25
Floored Genius is a great compilation of solo Cope and Teardrop Explodes. While I highly recommend it there are some songs that are pretty poor (old British new wave crap). The opening track "Reward" is worth the price of the cd alone though rest assured there are a lot of great tunes on this one.
A few great tunes, but generally disappointing...........2003-03-22
I bought this CD after hearing three of the songs that appear on it ("World Shut Your Mouth," "Trampolene," and "Charlotte Anne"), thinking that Julian Cope must be a true musical genius to have penned and recorded such inspired pieces--and thus concluding that his greatest hits CD must overflow with more of the same. Unfortunately, the three aforementioned tunes are the clear highlight of the collection, and, to my ear, only two or three of the remaining cuts even come close to them. The early material from The Teardrop Explodes is pretty forgettable for anyone who doesn't associate it with the time and place whence it arose, and my pop sensibilities, so satisfied by the three aforementioned tunes, make the later material somewhat unpalatable.
He comes from another planet, baby.......2001-08-13
I pity the poor kids these days, the music lovers of that generation! Tens of albums (yeah, yeah, cd's...) going out every day... every 18 years old got a music label in his parents' garage, making sounds that no one will ever hear. 10 years ago, when I bought my music (yeah, yeah, vinyl albums) there was limited access, so we got the good and the bad, but most important, we got the good! I checked out Julian Cope' Floored Genius, because I forgot the name of one of the songs... and I was amazed and ashamed to discover that it only has 1-2 reviews! So I'm doing it for the sake of my generation, telling you, asking you to check this one out. I know how hard is to go 10-20 years back in time and trace those marbles, but you can't afford to miss this one: I'll try to make a long story short: Julian Cope was born in England, where he still lives today, and in 1979, he formed a group name teardrop Explodes, the band did well in the post punk era in England at that time, and put out some of the best songs and records of that genre. If you want, the teardrop explodes were the important link between the Sex Pistols and the Smiths. Later on, Cope moved on and continued in a career of his own, producing unbelievable albums, one at the time. When I think of it, I can't really think of one album by the teardrop explodes, or as solo artist that doesn't contain at least 50% of great songs. The album "Floored Genius" is a very good collection of those years, as a group and as a solo artist. There are not enough words that I can use to tell you how good this collection is nor can I point its highlights, because it's all-good! For those of you who are interested in something more than Blink 182, who want to know where is it all comes from: Do yourself a favor, buy this one and change your life!

See this boy LIVE!.......2006-06-09
I first saw David Jacob-Strain at the Kerrville Folk Festival and wasn't sure what to expect from such a young kid. However, as he opened up his set with an acoustic piece, shivers spread immediately all over my body. The ferver in which he played only grew with each song, regardless of the instrument he took up, and I knew as soon as he finished (with a standing ovation from the entire crowd) that I needed to buy his albums.
I'm not disappointed. Any fan of Ani Difranco (I know, she's not blues... but the complexity of guitar talent parallels) will love his music. I recommend that regardless of your music genre of choice, you will highly enjoy listening to the intricate musical exploration on which David Jacob-Strain will take you. Still, if you want to see the best of his music, PLEASE see him perform live. That, in my opinion, is where he is at his most comfortable and best.
Simply Amazing.......2006-02-13
David has put together one of the finest albums I have heard in a long time. After listening to it since it's release, it still is in heavy rotation in my collection. A very well thought out and put together work, everything from the choice of songs to the choice of musicians is brilliant. I wish I could say what a weak point on this album could be, but I can't find any weak points! David will be a household name before too long, all the young prodigies you hear about then fade away have to look at David to see how it should be done. His musicianship is unparralled, (just look at how many blues camps hire David to teach,) his vocals are soulful, mature and very listenable, his sense of rythym and timing are extrodinary and he is versitle, unlike so many blues players. I get goose bumps every time I listen to this album! Look at the musicians who want to play with him also. These are people who can play with just about anyone they want to, and they want to play with David. Kenny Passarelli, a legendary bass man who drove the back beat for the likes of Joe Walsh and Elton John. Members of David Grisman's band. Anne Weiss, The god-child of Aretha Franklin, 4 octaves of goose bump and grind soul stylings that haunt you long after the songs are sung. If you don't have this, get it! If you haven't seen David perform, drop what you are doing, go to his website tour page and see when he will be within 12 hours of driving, get your tickets and bring all your friends. You will be their hero forever! I know David is mine.
Peace...\Eric
a 20something white kid who GETS IT.......2004-12-31
good lord this kid has got it. i was just simply perusing my local borders books and music's blues section looking for a keb'mo album or something when this kid caught my eye. i decided to take a listen, and what i heard blew me away. not only does this kid show the wear and tear of a 50 year old blues artist, but he's an ace on the acoustic guitar (i've never been a HUGE fan of the chicago-style electric blues) and the other people who play with him (the harmonica is fantastic) make for a recipe of some great blues music.
if you need something to compare him to, think john mayer, but bluesified. he has some definately bob dylan influence, especially in track #5, "take my chances". his lyrics are smart and meaningful, the music is fantastic and i think would appeal to even the purist blues lover.
i was thinking about which tracks i would put on a "must listen to" list, but they're all incredible. i still blast this CD from my car with pride.

Is it is or is it ain't?.......2004-10-21
These are the facts. David Jacobs Strain plays, writes and sings like his soul already topped the one hundred thousand mile mark. Guitar Player magazine dubbed him as one of the up and coming players in the business. His vocals have an appealing weather beaten quality to them and his songs show a maturity beyond his short years. I just don't know if this will appeal to blues purists or not. It's a blues album when he's covering songs by Fred McDowell, Blind Willie Johnson and Sleepy John Estes. His own stuff tends to have a more singer-songwriter sound in the vein of a John Hiatt. You know, blues tinged but aiming for radio airplay. Don't take that as a slam. Just take it as a possible sign that DJS may be thinking of joining the mainstream just as Jonny Lang and Kenny Wayne Shepard have. I don't know that it's worked out all that well for the other two.

Album Description
Following in the footsteps of Ace's earlier retrospective of the 5 Royales' best 1950s King recordings ("It's Hard But It's Fair") comes this equally essential collection that chronicles their activities in the early 1960s.
Presented in best-ever sound, here are 14 of their finest sides for the Memphis-based Home Of The Blues label - including the highly collectable Northern Soul and `Beach Music' favourite that is the title track. Many will want to buy this CD on the strength of this one track alone.
Also included are the complete Federal recordings of their lead guitarist and chief songwriter Lowman "El" Pauling and their pianist Royal "The Royalton" Abbit - all making their CD debut - plus three solo Pauling sides that were recorded for (but not issued by) HOTB.
Superbly soulful harmonies and stupendous guitar work make these tracks as vital now as they were when first released 45+ years ago.
It's often said that 60s soul groups would not have sounded the way they did without the 5 Royales to point the way. Here's the proof of that statement.

Five Royale fans & early Soul fanatics - Pick this one up!!.......2007-06-28
WOW! That was my initial reaction! I've loved The Five Royales for years, but was only familiar with their 1950's R&B material. I never knew they cut these great early soul tracks! From the opening notes of 'Show Me', my jaw dropped!
It seems clear that at this point in their career they were in competition with the early work of Wilson Pickett and Otis Redding. Hearing Johhny Tanner sing in a more gospelly manner was a revelation!
All I can say is that if you like early 60's soul (Pickett, Burke, James Brown), and are in awe of the magic the Five Royales produced in the 50's, this CD is the missing link of R&B to Soul!

Beautiful.......2005-11-12
This is such a beautiful album I don't even know where to begin. "Colours Fly Away" and "Culture Bunker" are two of my favorite songs. Echo And The Bunnymen and Teardrop Explodes were contemporaries of each other in the Liverpool scene of the early eighties, but I think Teardrop Explodes had the advantage with Julian Cope's powerful vocals and excellent song craftsmanship. Where Echo is more gloomy dirgelike garage rock, Teardrop is more cheerfully psychedelic with more advanced musical composition (I don't mean like prog rock; they're just more colorful and less simple than Echo). Anyway, the point is if you like Echo, you'll probably like this.
Superb though Strange.......2003-11-17
Classified by many as the Love album that never was, the Teardrops second coming was indeed as ferociously unbalanced and deviant from the canon as anything Arthur Lee has yet produced.Still,it was rock solidly anchored in brilliance.Julian Cope's shape shifting song structures left no stone unturned in his quest for diversity. The album's mind boggling scope(which goes from punk to psychedelia and back) makes it a difficult listen, with Cope's cryptic writings only making it harder to really comprehend the music.Still, when you do "get" the songs you'll probably love them forever."Colours Fly Away","Passionate Friend","The Great Dominions" or "Like Leila Khaled Said" are all unbelievably beautiful ,colourful songs and of what true genius is really made of."Wilder" may not have "Kilimanjaro's" imediacy and punkish edge but it does have a larger growth capacity on the listener. And above all it presents us a more refined, exquisite Julian Cope's tunesmithery.
The British Psychedelia Revival's Best Band!.......2001-11-25
The Teardrop Explodes appeared at the end of the 70's, led by Julian Cope. They combined a post punk British sensibility with the psychedelic revival that was going on there at the time, and were very sucessful in Britain. This is their second album and arguably their best. Sadly, Cope couldn't hold the band together just as they were begining to get some exposure and touring in the US. He began to drift into an LSD induced fog for a few years. His solo work since then has been very erratic and not very successful. The breakup of TTE left only one other band of any stature in this movement to carry the torch: Echo And The Bunnymen, who went on to make a fairly big name for themselves in the US as well as Britain. Prior to TTE and Echo, Cope and future Bunnyman, Ian McCullogh were in a band together. One can only speculate what might have come from that had they stayed together.
In my opinion, TTE was a better all around band than Echo.
Cope's vocals were far more expresive and his arrangements far more complex. He wrote songs that were often easy to sing along with, but laced with quirky lyrics. He still retains that talent to this day, though his recording quality is often shabby.
"Wilder" makes a great introduction to Julian Cope. It was mine way back in 81. It's certainly some of his most focused work.
Other works by Cope I recomend are: "Saint Julian" (1986) and "Peggy Suicide" (1991)
Excellent Album.......2001-01-28
I'm not quite sure what to say about this album to those uninitiated into lead singer Julian Cope's weird world. First, I should say that its a great album that I've found endlessly listenable. The production is clearly of the British neo-psychedelic school of the early '80's, but it never sounds in the slightest dated - its crisp and clean, beautifully varied in texture (never over-chorused or -flanged or synth-heavy) and it accordingly sounds like it could have been made last week or 25 years ago. The instrumentation is similarly perfect - the rhythm section is great, and Cope and his mates use horns (!) brilliantly - for an example, check out "Passionate Friend." All this inspired craftsmanship is married to Julian Cope's magnificent songwriting and singing, which elevates this to five-star, favorite album territory. Cope's songwriting is just great - melodic as all get-out, destroying conventional structures, but always in the service of the song and not just for effect. Sometimes, as a song is ending, he's still wringing new melodies from the song - again, check out "Passionate Friend" (which sounds equally informed by the Turtles and the Buzzcocks). Its almost all upbeat, exuberant pop, yet nevertheless imbued with an abiding sense of mystery and loss. The lyrics are opaque but still dazzling and revealing, the singing passionate. Every song is great, and after 3 years of listening to this frequently, like all great art, something new is always revealed or reflected, yet I know I'll never get to the great mysteries at the heart of this record. (As you can see, after I slow start, I can't say enough about this record!) In conclusion, this is a unique record you won't regret purchasing if you're a fan of slightly twisted power pop or psycheldelia, and especially if you are a fan of the Chameleons UK, the Church, XTC, Echo, or Robyn Hitchcock. As high a recommendation as I can make!
A True Great........2000-08-26
This is music the way Julian Cope wanted to make music, unlike there first Album "Kilimanjaro" which was more "popie" (which would be to get a record contrack, but still good). One of the Best Albums to come out of the 80's. A must for ever good Record collection.

A Mess.......2006-08-25
There was huge potential in this project, but it's really not been realised.
They dogmatically attempt to reproduce notes and harmonies from the songs 'as is' rather than rework creatively to achieve an overall flow. Songs are also over-complicated rather than seeking a purity of sound and harmony. This really jars, as this is where Massive Attack excel. It also feels over-produced (trying to make up for poor composition?).
I was hoping for something intelligently re-worked to fit the instruments used, such as Christopher O'Riley did superbly with Radiohead. Instead, this seems to be cashing in on the name rather than getting to the heart of the music.
Nice, although it's not Massive's way..........2005-10-09
The intention is good, but it is clear that Massive Attack has not been involved in this project. They are all good covers of Massive Attack, but I miss their style in the songs...

Who buys collections?.......2003-03-10
So, yet another collection of Teardrops classics hits the streets. But who buys them? This should actually be titled selection rather than collection & it's a bit eclectic too. Who needs a collection like this? I consider both this bands original albums as essential & both were well re-issued recently featuring almost their entire output generously spread over both discs. Surely more satisfying than owning less than half of their recorded work & not neccesarily their best. However, for those new to the band, it would probably serve well enough as an introduction & will surely leave the listener curious enough to hear more & will thus, go ahead & buy the original albums anyway. A great piece of marketing therefore so hats off to those poor souls at the record company desperate to make ends meet & who so obviously deserve our hard earned cash! BUY IT! DON'T BUY IT!
