Simmer

Editorial Reviews
JazzReview.com
A drummer's dream come true; it will delight and amaze listeners who enjoy fine drum performances.

Bostonherald.com
At times gentle, at others violent, "Simmer" explores all aspects of percussion and drumming eschewing guitars, horns and bass instruments.

Album Description
Led by former Blue Man Group drummer, Steve Wilkes, Six Drumsets debuted in 1994 at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia. Since then, the group has performed to standing ovations throughout the US. The international cast of Six Drumsets features Steve, Jon Hazilla, Johnny Rabb, Takeshi Ichikawa, Johan Svensson, and Marko Djordjevic. Playing rhythms that span the scope of modern percussion—World Beat, Hip-Hop, Jungle, Jazz, Rock, Electronic Techno, Ambient—the group creates drums that sing.

Steve Wilkes is the drummer for the world renowned Empire Brass Quintet, and a Berklee College of Music Professor. As a recipient of the Japan Foundation Uchida Fellowship, Steve traveled throughout Asia in 1991 and1994. His studies with the legendary Japanese Taiko troupes Kodo, O Gion Daiko and particularly Seido Kobayashi and O Edo Sukeroku Taiko inspired him to build a band around the indigenous backbeat of the modern world: the drumset. Six Drumsets released their debut, self-titled CD in 1997 and will be releasing it's follow-up, Simmer, on April 2nd, 2002. This CD was produced by Steve with co-production and engineering by Rob Jaczko

Jean Redpath sings the "inimitable songs of Burns" as if Rabbie himself is hovering over her shoulder. You're not likely to find too many singers more suited to her material than Redpath. Also, I needs must mention the first-rate musical accompaniments by Serge Hovey. All in all, the seven volume Redpath-Burns series is indispensible for lovers of song everywhere. Way to go, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Good Music at an AWESOME Deal! (4 Out Of 5 Stars).......2005-06-11

I saw this cd set while in Bahrain for around the same price (12 to 13 bucks) and decided to get it and listen... and boy was i satisfied.

I had heard of The Scumfrog by my good buddy Jason from the Worthington (hey buddy!), but really never hear his type of music and mixes. SIMMER is actually a 3 CD Set (Also there is the 3 CD Limited editon set, which i am reviewing) that includes the 2 CD Set EXTENDED ENGAGEMENT!

This type of music was a refreshment to me as i love to take chances to new stuff. F KARMA is a great track as well as other titles on "SIMMER".

EXTENDED ENGAGEMENT is worth this deal alone. Both continuous mix cds will get you going and in the mood to dance till you drop. Definitely some rock / tribal / trance influences can be felt.

GET THIS 3 CD SET AT THE KICK @$$ PRICE AND SEE WHY YOU SHOULD BEWARE OF THE SCUMFROG! ITS WORTH IT!

5 out of 5 stars Finally a fresh approach.......2004-10-22

It is impossible to love everything that The Scumfrog has ever done, therefore he is too diverse, but this is also his strength, you never know what he'll do next. My personal favorites were his remixes of Britney Spears, Missy Elliott and his single Music Revolution, but this album is yet something different. If you are in to repetitive prog, then this may not be your cup of tea, but I feel this album is the sound that Dance Music needs right now. Very rock influenced while staying true to elements of tribal, Progressive and even Trance. A lot of real songs on here, all performed by The Scumfrog himself and very tight production. It's such a fun album by a very talented producer who always seems to be a few steps ahead, and who fortunately doesn't take himself too seriously.

Now he needs to play in Atlanta!

Bobby, (Atlanta)

    4 out of 5 stars A Keeper For Sure.......2005-08-24

Just yesterday I listened to this CD and was still blown away. I say still, because I brought it in winter of 1998 and haven't taken it out of rotation since! Having more than a fair share of ska compilations, this one is by far one of the best; of female or non-female vocalists! In my opinion the first half of the CD is rock solid with tracks from Metro Stylee, Franceska, and Isaac Green & the Skalars (whose track is presented here in a superior mix than what is on their LP) with a nice variety of ska "styles" including rocksteady and third wave. The second half of the CD is not at strong but contains the steller "Worried About You" by Mealticket and "Why" by Highball Holiday. The rest are intances of ok music, but bad singing (Like on "Hey" done by Viskacity). But the good tracks make up for them 10 times over. A highlight from the 90s ska revival period.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent compilation.......2002-10-09

Every track is a keeper. Just good Ska from beginning to end for both the expert and the novice. "Destroy" is the shining star. It will engage you, body and soul, immediately.

5 out of 5 stars This comp. is OUTSTANDING.......1999-10-01

It's rare to find a comp. where every single song is good! I don't think there is a bad song on there, 74 min. of rad ska!

    5 out of 5 stars Very Nice.......1999-04-27

A good collection of Ska with a female front person. "Skypager" by the Shanksters is exceptional. The Usuals have a excellent track as well. If you like Ska you'll hear some hard to find to impossible to find stuff. Including some tracks for those of us that give rein on occation to the Goddess. Sample "Don't Step On My Fingers" by the The Solicitors.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Best compilation of his Warner Bros. recordings.......2000-07-22

This distillation of Rah's last 3 albums predated 32 Records' A STANDING EIGHT by 3 or 4 years, and is likely the best choice of that material, as Joel Dorn himself compiled a single disc of what he considered the best moments from those final recordings, bookended by previously-unreleased tracks that still can only be found on this disc. (Although I should note that "Thunder and Lightning Goodbye" merges Kirk's medley of "Sentimental Journey" and "Coming Home" - taken from the Vanguard side of RAHSAAN RAHSAAN - with the sounds of a rainstorm.)

The first several tracks find Rahsaan as strong as ever, particularly a ferocious live rendition of his signature "Serenade to a Cuckoo" and the dramatic "Theme for the Eulipions", one of his most unique recordings which combines spoken-word passages, atmospheric sounds, a vocal chorus, a female solo vocal, and the playing of the band, in a programmatic fashion.

As Dorn explains in his liner notes, it's easier to bemoan Rahsaan's post-stroke debilitation than it is to appreciate the truly "Herculean" comeback. These tracks again feature Kirk the composer, Kirk the multi-instrumentalist, Kirk the saxophone master, and Kirk the keeper of the flame of great Black American music, including Percy Heath (of the MJQ) in the band and recording yet another Ducal tune, "In a Mellow Tone". His use of the toy piano and return to a more basic blues expression speak of his loneliness and return to a core state, producing a music that's both playful and eerie.

      Product Description

This CD by Scott Martin throws a lot of flavors into one skillet. Scott grew up in a musical family (in fact, most of them play on this CD) and was influenced by all the music played in the house. His father plays trumpet and was into big bands and Louie Armstrong. His mother played string bass and was into classical and Aretha. His brothers were into bebop, funk, and everything in-between. Then he and his brothers got the gig with Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band and Scott was there for over 12 years, playing all over the world and getting exposed to all kinds of latin music. Tito, Machito, Chombo Silva, Mongo not to mention cumbia, meringue, salsa..... Throw this all into a cooking pot and you have "Menudo & Gritz" Scott Martin's latest CD. 'An Intoxicating Blend of Latin and Soul'. Check it out....You'll dig it!!
