4 out of 5 stars Hand me the remote control........2006-01-29

This is a collection of 65 TV themes from the '70s and '80s. They all seem to be the original versions of the themes, unlike some of the earlier volumes in the series, which had some rerecordings. These are the TV shows I grew up with, so there is a lot of nostalgia here for me. I like the sitcom themes the best, because that is mostly what I watched when I was a kid. A lot of them are really cheesy, but I love 'em. If you watched too much TV during the '70s and '80s, you will probably get a kick out of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars From TV LAnd to AOL getting soon re runs of series...This is a MUST!.......2005-12-26

Well, it seems that from TV LAnd to Nick at Night even AOL which is on the way to create a service that will allows his users to view series from th 60's to now, people WANT good series with fun again.

No gratuitous violence like too many shows now (which, that is good, are going back in numbers since last year 2004).

Those misics like the shows are classics because they were good fun AND with adventures not cheap series made with unecessary violence or sex.
So...it seems that it is coming back! So, why not get the album too?

5 out of 5 stars great service.......2005-07-07

very fast service, item arrived in good condition. would buy from again

4 out of 5 stars Most are originals (for a change for this series).......2005-01-09

This is the first of this series that offers mostly (not all) original renditions of the TV theme songs.

Maybe it's because many of these were by stars or singers who are known by the public, but whatever the reason this edition is a big improvement.

I would NOT recommend ANY of the earlier volumes in this series if you're seriously looking for original recordings.

4 out of 5 stars Good Original TV versions!.......2002-04-24

I was relieved when I found this CD had all original TV versions, compared to the usual unfamiliar orchestra versions you usually get on a compilation - that really frustrates me. Especially when I came to "The Dukes of Hazzard" - the version Waylon Jennings released on record just didn't have the same drive or edge to it as the one played on TV. That has always been disapointing for me until I saw here the original on CD.
Themes like "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Alf" and "The Golden Girls" are really refreshing and a reminder of the old familiar innocence and laid back atmosphere of TV family comedy, while "Airwolf", "Doctor Who" and "People's Court" and "Monday Night Football" give a lively and yet serious feel.
However, I think there might be an error in the CD liner notes; they describe the theme to "James at 15" as vintage 70s pop/rock, and say the song itself is called "It's all up to you."
I never saw this show, and the words "It's all up to you" do not appear in the song. I would like to know if anyone can enlighten me as to whether or not this was a mistake, as with the exception of this theme being vaguely reminiscent of Elton John's piano and harmonica style of pop/rock, I find this hard to believe.

3 out of 5 stars A different sound for the Tubes.......2006-08-29

This album has been ripped by the majority. I Like it it. You know why? B/c it was produced by Todd Rundgren and has a very "Todd "sounding vibe to it (especially "Loves a Mystery" and "I want it all now").

I saw the original "Remote Control" tour and it was mesmerizing. Fee Waybill was a fanatastic front man.

The cd sounds dated, will never hold up to "White Punks on Dope" but it is still an interesting work. I think that this is a great Todd Rundrgen album!

5 out of 5 stars This is REAL alternative music.......2005-08-28

The Tubes were an alt.rock band before that term lost all meaning. (Exactly how can a band claim to be "alternative" if its CD is in the Billboard Top 10, and you can buy it at Wal-Mart?) This was their first and only "concept album", although that label may be somewhat misleading. This is not an album that tells a story a la "Tommy" or "The Wall". Rather, the theme of this album is television, and each song on it is related to TV in some way, even if only as a pun. For example, "Prime Time" has nothing whatsoever to do with television, but is a play on the TV industry term. The songs on "Remote Control" are among the Tubes' best. For people who were turned off by the rawness of their work up until this point, "Remote Control" is much more polished. The sound here is reflective of a band used to recording in a studio, rather than a garage band. However, it sounds nowhere near as slick as The Tubes' subsequent "Outside/Inside" and "Completion Backwards Principle" (For some Tubes fans, these represent the nadir of a once great band, but others like me found even these latter, more "mainstream" recordings to be quite interesting). All of these songs have a hard-rock sound to them, even the slower tempo songs such as "Prime Time" and "No Mercy". This album was the perfect vehicle for showing off the raging intesity of the band, but in a much more focused effort. The result is a masterpiece of alt.rock that sounds fresh even 30 years later.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfectly Executed.......2005-07-26

I will readily admit that while I own a few Tubes albums, I am not of the Tubular elite. I can't quote every lyric or recall the great concerts I attended (I went to see Cheap Trick instead) or debate about which label treated them best. However, in my estimation, this was one of their three best albums (competing with "Love Bomb" and "Completion Backwards Principle") and arguably the cream of the crop.

Of course, when I had this on endless replay back in the day, I was only 14. I mean, this was 1979, and this actually came out originally on--gasp!--a vinyl LP. Wait--come back! Just because it's old doesn't mean it can't be good. I just wanted to note that I was less wise and probably more inclined to nod sagely at the totally boss lyrics and their deep profundity.

Still, I believe it's held up well. "Getoverture" is a great rock instrumental, and outside of heavy metal concept albums, these are rarely done these days. "Turn Me On" and "Prime Time" are slick and catchy numbers with nifty turns of phrase (and the latter features female vox from sometime Tubes collaborator Re Styles). "No Mercy" has a nice hard kick. And the ballad "Love's A Mystery" is surprisingly touching (the Tubes myseriously excelled at off-handed laments of longing and hopeless desire).

Famous producer and musician Todd Rundgren gets credit for polishing some of the more anarchic edges of the Tubes and tightening them up a bit without pushing them overboard into commerical blandness. And the band really brings it all together, covering a fair range of sounds over just eleven songs. It's kind of satirical prog with the mandatory synths, punctured with punk sensibilities, burnished by Rundgren's superb production values, and hammered along by urgent vocals.

One of the all-time best cover photos, too.

      5 out of 5 stars Total Control.......2005-02-10

If there was ever an album that I wanted to write a review for It is this one. Although not my favourite Tubes album; "Now" for me is the pinnacle for the Tubes, this comes in at a very very close second, if it's posible to say that. This was the very first Tubes album that I bought and it still graces my cd player at least once a month, sometimes more, not bad after 26 years. There have been many positive reviews of this album, and quite frankly they are all justified.

The album kicks off with three solid songs that glide into each other effortlessly. The opener "Turn me on", electro-rock at its finest, if not a little squeaky clean, but nevertheless, a belter, I love the middle 8 section where the band members take it in turns to show how they layer a song. Particularly noticeable are Mike Cotten's synths chirping and zinging in this section - magic!.

Next "TV is king" (you're my everything) a surprisingly simple solid sounding track, with a great bounce and lyrics that are so poignant. a very strong track.

"Prime Time" - My favourite - some reviewers have glossed over this track, and others given just a cursory mention, however, for me the spring/summer of 1979 is summed up in this track. It's a great bouncing track, simple, but effective, a poppy-synthy-romantic song, and one that a lot of my contemporaries still remember, even if they are not Tubes fans. Yes, "Prime Time" got them noticed in my town.

"I want it all now" - a mixture of styles, even a bit of reggae-come-rock here. The Tubes are just showing off now, they know how to write good solid songs (even if they were helped a bit by Todd Rundgren!). A great melee of styles in one song. If there is a bad track on the album, it would be this one for me, but, when I say bad, it is in context with the others, and this track is in no way "bad!" - just different.

Another strong track now,...."No way out", this one will get you, the middle 8 again delivers some great musical layers culminating in the famous Tubes "Wall of sound" - yet again, the simplicity of sound hides a storehouse of musicianship.

"Getoverture" an instrumental Overture of the album's songs - noticeable segments include turn me on, loves a mystery I don't understand and telecide (see later).

The next track is a bit of a surprise - it is secretly one of the strongest tracks on the album - why do i say that? "No Mercy" is not instantly accessible in the same way as Prime time or Love's a mystery, but it will just grab you after a few listens ad will grow on you. Yet again it has a strong simple beat, which hides a well crafted song - the saxophone (or what sounds like one) solo is jazzy and complements the song perfectly.

Ok, Bill Spooner fans are next. We are given the tour de force with "Only the strong survive". Much has been said about Mr Spooner's gravely voice, which comes to the fore on this track. another strong track...so what, who cares?

"Be mine tonight" - a nice song, with heartfelt lyrics and a chance to hear Vince Welnick's touches on the electric piano - amazing.

Now for a powerhouse of a ballad - the jazzy but soulful "Love's a mystery (I don't understand) - a single in its own right here in the UK. This ballad has surely got to rank amongst the great tearjerkers, and what a solo, too many notes would have killed the song - I am moved every time.

Finally "Telecide" - what a way to end an album - read the other reviews on this one - I couldn't do it enough justice ... I remember when they called this song "the terrorist song!" - aah! those were the days.

Yes, the "Tubes" are in Total Control on this album, despite chaffing at the heavy hand of Todd Rundgren. Buy it! you've heard it so many times before.

      5 stars every time.

"Remote Control" is a definite sign that Dark Wave music has potential to break out into mainstream. Fast industrial beats mixed with well chosen sampling and dark, realistic lyrics make this album a must-buy for any fan of digital music and/or goth music, and/or industrial music. I recommend this to anyone and everyone.

That's right!!! I went to a used record/cd sale put on to raise money for my favorite community radio station, the biggest station of it's kind in the Twin Cities....KFAI FM 106.7 and 90.3 FM......it was the FIRST TIME I HAD EVER GONE, and wow did I
find GOLD or did I FIND GOLD?!!!!

I bought three cd's....the best by FAR.....is Cold Beer and Remote Control Promo CD.....it's got it all...interviews and live
recordings from their Live At The Fillmore DVD....I was SO EXCITED!!!

I took this cd with me when I went to the Black Hills and back with my folks in a spacious little motor home....I played OZILENE
REPEATEDLY because the live version is ALWAYS THE BEST....I really get into the groove just listening to how Amy builds and builds by adding instruements...and then a measure after the drums come in she goes right into the song.....

Granted if you have seen IG in person you know that she does that on Ozilene a lot.....it's better than the studio version
because THAT has OZILENE, Amy's Grandma on there and while she is very interesting...you can't make out what else is going on
        in the background.....

For Emily fan's there 's a CLASSIC EMILY F$%&$ UP on Cold Beer And Remote Control (She forgets to....)And Shame On You, Cold Beer And Remote Control Studio version....and the live version, and Peace Tonight, Gone Again live....I mean this is really a gem! Go get it.....right now! Go on get outta here! Your treasure awaits you!

        5 out of 5 stars Great song.......2001-07-27

"Cold Beer & Remote Control" shows us the Indigo Girls once again displaying their wonderful talent for writing meaningful songs. The lyrics and tone of the song are as moving as anything else they've done in recent years. I highly recommend this single for any true IG fan.

5 out of 5 stars a fun cd to add to your IG collection.......2000-09-06

as someone who has to have everything that the indigo girls release (promos, singles, etc), i found this cd a great addition to my collection. i LOVE the interview segments -- it's always fun to hear amy talk about emily and to hear emily talk about amy. :-) and the live versions of the songs are great to have, even if you already have the studio versions. my advice: buy it. although it is "just" a single, you won't be disappointed.

        5 out of 5 stars Worth It.......2000-08-30

This is a great smaller version of the promo release last month. The interview segments are worth the cost alone. The songs are live if you are interest in something other than studio recording. Definitely recommend!

        Album Description

In the near decade since three Melbourne high school friends formed a band inspired by such teenage heroes as the Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth, ART OF FIGHTING have become one of the most respected and admired independent bands in Australia, with a growing international following, a rich and complex back catalogue and an irresistible air of dignity and grace. Moving on from their delicately controlled sophomore album 'Second Storey', Melbourne quartet Art of Fighting return with their beautifully intuitive third, 'Runaways'. Described by the band's front man, Ollie Browne, as "open and relaxed", the songs captured on Runaways are a mix of introspective 'Sycamore & Sand', playful, romantic 'Less than an Instant' insightful 'Distance as Virtue and brutally honest 'Mysteries'.

i originally was turned on to ART OF FIGHTING with the NO MORE EMPTY NIGHTS cd which i love. i was upset to learn that the local (and well known) record store BENT CRAYON had no way of getting this in. john said he was upset that it had no U.S. distrobution yet. so amazon to the rescue...this is a great progression for this band, which i've always had a soft spot in my heart for. if you are a fan of theirs, you will love this album. if you haven't heard them yet, you are missing something special. give them some of your hard earned dollars and pick this up, and while you're at it, pick up their entire catalog, wherever you can find it.
