About the Artist
Mahaeo (creator) knows me as Stephen Standing Owl of Northern Cheyenne descent. I began playing the Native flute about five years ago. I had never intended to play for the public. I just enjoyed the spirit of the flute. As I traveled to powwows I was asked to play my flutes to fill in time during the drum breaks, the response from the public was overwhelming, and eventually I was asked to be part of the programs at many of these powwows in the New England area. Since then I have played for audiences at schools, presentations on Native Culture, library systems, campgrounds and historical societies. I had the honor of opening on stage for Jeff Ball on two occasions. Jeff nominated for best flutist of the year in 1998, by the Native American Music Awards, and in 2001 won the Native Heart Award. I thank Jeff for it was he who unleashed the gift that Maheao bestowed in me at birth. During the past few years many people asked if I planned to make a recording. It was not until I met Tahakierente- Howard Lyons at a powwow that I even considered it. Howard is of the Mohawk Nation and is a singer, songwritre and producer. His recording of Hopes and Dreams nominated for best folk recording by the Native American Music Awards in 2001. Howard owns SkyDome Records in Bethlehem N.H. It was there that Night Flight was created. I have always respected the Native Story Tellers for it is they who keep the past alive. Not being blessed with the gift of verbal story telling I choose to tell stories with my flutes. Each song on Night Flight brings you on a journey. Listen to the flutes voices and hear their stories. For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

I 'found' Vanessa-Mae a few years ago. I am so blown away by her unusual talent in classical violin. My all time favorite is Toccata and Fugue. As a classical music lover, this gives me goosebumps. I am wondering why I am not hearing her in this year-2007. It is as if she made these awesome tracks and then no media news about her. That to me is a shame, for we need more real artists, not these talentless pop stars in rehab! This CD is a charm, you will love it!

If you own Songwriter, than expect more of the same. Played back-to-back the two albums have consistency. This is not a Moody Blues album, however.

Like Songwriter, select tracks here are wonderful and make the album worth getting for fans, though the entire record arc is lovely.


Night Flight, Penumbra Moon, Face in the Crowd all have that special something and those Justin harmonies always get me...

In 1978, Jeff Wayne recruited Justin Hayward to sing and perform on the highly acclaimed "War Of The Worlds" album. Wayne went on to produce the album, including Hayward's single "Forever Autumn", which became a worldwide hit. As a way of saying "thank you" for Hayward's contribution, two years later Wayne returns the favor by producing Hayward's 1980 album "Night Flight".

The title cut is the best song on the album, showcasing Hayward's soaring vocals and recognizable guitar. The next track "Maybe It's Just Love" is light and pretty, however, the rest of the tracks here just don't match up to the creativity and originality of Hayward's previous solo album "Songwriter" from three years earlier. The album features brass and string arrangements, a female group occasionally providing background vocals, and a slight bit of a "disco" beat to some of the songs, but unfortunately these aspects don't carry the album to top notch status. Nonetheless, die-hard Moody Blues/Justin Hayward fans will desire this album to make sure their collection is complete.

Hayward only wrote six of the songs on this collection and each one of them stands up to every song he's done since. The others don't seem to have the range of emotional urgency Hayward delivers so well - perhaps it's because it didn't pen them. However, it's still a great vocal recording and having all his CD's, I couldn't pass this one up and I'm glad I have it. The additional bonus tracks of, "Bedtime Stories" is just additional filler, but the live rendition of "Forever Autumn" is excellent and hard to find.

      The Idiot's Guide to Calssical Music is an awesome Cd for those people who want to have a tiny sample of all the great classical compositions. Track 61 and 63 are my favorite.

      Yes, this CD really does have 99 tracks. How do they do it? Each is about a minuet long. Some are longer, some are shorter, but you get the micro-essential moments of the music.

      If you like burning your own CDs, then this is a great source for intra-track fillers, along the lines of They Might Be Giants' "Apollo 18" album, which has all of those short tracks on the end. The idea is to put your CD player on shuffle, so the short tracks get mixed in with the bona fide songs. The result being a very unusual album.

      The booklet gives an explanation of the track, where you heard it (i.e. the Warner Brother's Cartoons, or on famous films), and where you can get the full piece of music. So it's a mega sampler CD.

      I can honestly say that this CD is a great gift for the friend who has everything.

      Take it for what it is, a clever and useful GUIDE to classical music. No, it is NOT an uncut rendition of Beethoven's 9th symphony. It IS a cd that will jog your memory. You have heard many of the tunes presented here, but not always knowing what the work was. This is your chance to catch up with all the great classical music you have been exposed to. Cheap too.

      Cliburn Competition medallist Olga Kern plays Rachmaninov as if he wrote this music just for her. She's a virtuoso in the grand tradition, playing with a huge tone and brilliant fingerwork, captured with life-like realism by the engineers. The big work here is the Corelli Variations, a fiendishly difficult set of twenty variations on a Baroque sarabande, La Folia. The composer wrote it to wow his audiences, but it's also serious, full of with dark-toned poetry, serene lyricism, and a huge climax that ends in a poignant coda. Kern plays it with tremendous power and fleet agility. The rest of the disc consists of Rachmaninov's transcriptions of his own and other composers' music, ranging from romanticized Bach to an opulent rewrite of Schubert's Wohin? to his elaborate cadenza for Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2. Kern plays the Liszt with plenty of dash, evoking its gypsy flavor and exploiting its opportunities for virtuosity. Here's one competition winner who seems destined for stardom. -- Dan Davis

      Olga Kern, the young Russian pianist and Van Cliburn gold medal winner (2001), offers a wide-ranging selection of Rachmaninoff transcriptions, starting with J.S. Bach's superb Suite from the Partita in E major for violin. Many of these are favorites that the public has loved for decades: Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee, Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2 with a cadenza by Sergei himself; plus lyrical and demanding arrangements from Bizet, Schubert, Mendelssohn, and Tchaikovsky. For this listener, the supreme moments are Olga's performance of Rachmaninoff's Variations on a Theme of Corelli, which have been recorded by many virtuosos. It was like hearing them for the first time--fresh, dynamic and radiantly powerful! If you are tired of reading wimpy movie, book and music reviews that leave you wondering whether to bite, here's one vote: say yes!

      I was privileged to hear Olga perform at Zankell Hall at her Carnegie Hall debut several years ago. Her performances have a very rich individual flare, exactness and confidence. I was not disappointed with her then and I was not disappointed with this cd, Corelli Variations. On this cd, Olga's performances exude something definitely masculine. Though this may not appeal to everyone, it is simply a matter of every pianist having his individual style, feel and texture, if you will. Her playing is warm and vivacious at the same time, and what she says, she says beautifully. The programme is also quite captivating, especially the Bach transcriptions. Thank you Ms Kern!

      I was lucky enough to receive an autographed copy of this cd from my brother for christmas, who went to see Olga live, and it definitely made my favorite X-mas gift list. This cd has excellent selections, Olga is a veritable phenomonon, her interpretation and control of the piano is superb, if you love excellently performed classical piano music, use harpoons, tranquilizer darts, or anything else you may need to get this cd. Even if it isn't (sigh) autrographed...

      Firstly i must say Im not very much fond of a solo piano but the first time i heard Olga Kern's Corelli Variations I immediately went to order this magnificent CD. Olga plays with maturity, virtoussity as if the music was written for her. I usually prefer the piano accompanied by a a violin or cello but this time around I was taken by surprise. ALL songs are out of this world I would not be able to describe the songs in musically terms but i know this is good. Go on thrill yourself with the best music. The inlay booklet is included with English, French& Dutsch translations with information about composer ,songs & artist.One might add that the outside cover of the CD is very artistically beautiful with red dress &shaded pianos background just like Ms Kern, so its not misleading, you know the saying "what u see is what u get".
