Music to Get Lucky By, or The Return of the Fez-Men

Editorial Reviews
Mark Bounds, Music Monthly, Apr 1999
... Chock full of instrumental screamers, The Return Of The Fez-Men! proves that this Baltimore trio has the talent and sound to equal or even best many of the acts currently in the genre. Blending elements from yesterday (Dick Dale, Link Wray, and practically the entire Del-Fi label surf stable of the '60s) and today (Man Or Astroman, Los Straightjackets, Satan's Pilgrims, Phantom Surfers, etc), the band blasts through a baker's dozen of impressive, and often blistering instrumental tracks. ... As a final note, I must say that the Swiv-O-Matics' Return Of The Fez Men! has found a welcome home in my own, personal surf/car/rock & roll instrumental collection. Ask anyone who knows me and they'll tell you that that says it all!

About the Artist
Recognized widely as the band that put the "char" in Charm City, The Swivs serve up an incendiary brand of instrumental thwack that incorporates most, if not all, of the known instrumental genres - and actually some that they invented on their own. Along the way, The Swivs manage to create a sonic atmosphere which can render the listener unsettled, unnerved, inspired, or brazenly euphoric at any given time. Album Description
A Swiv-load of Stomp-eriffic Goodies!

The band's material is, as always, sonically pleasing yet flavored with a subtle comedic bent. Not easy for a band that plays songs sans lyrics you might think - but no! Their song titles and structures make for easy communication, regardless of the fact that words are not present. With musical subjects like beautiful women, the fastness of fast food, the impending destruction of civilization due to bird-related diseases, and the funny way in which loud music can jar bone, The Swiv-O-Matics find endless inspiration in the simple things in life and strive to pay it back double, with their own brand of instrumentality.

5 out of 5 stars The Swivs are dysfunctionally Keane!.......1999-11-07

OK, I thought my comics were pretty bad, because if you remove the words and just keep the drawings, people can add their own odd interpretations, and I've had to shut down websites doing just that. Well, the Swivs don't even _HAVE_ words, and you can still smell the perversion in their surf-alicious goodness! Imagine if I called a book with Dolly on the cover "The Bare Naked Bed Dance" and you'll see what I mean! And "I'm engaged?" Engaged in what? Their seductive song of fowl (Royal Chicken a Go Go) is worse than any pasta mispronunciations I've engaged in. Yet, despite the bassist's near-satanic name (Damian), the drummer's suggestive one (Helmet), and the lead guitarist's unholy height (6'10"), I find the Fezmen irresistable! While there are no objectionable words, I'm sure the CAPalert would agree with me that this simply must be an R-rated album.

4 out of 5 stars This is not your parent's surf music!.......1999-09-03

Tuff blend of classic surf and heavy rock support. An accomplished update on the traditional instrosurf sound, with the guitars cranked up to ten! Grunge-surf for the nineties!

5 out of 5 stars What a find! The CD is WONDERFUL! Talk about amazing music.......1999-08-01

excerpt from an email sent to the band's masseuse, after she sent the Swivs CD to her friend, a bassist for a C/W band.

"What a find! The CD is WONDERFUL! Talk about amazing musicians! I am SO impressed! You massage one of those guys?? I could see what hey'd need massage; they play fast! These guys have GOT to get picked up for movie soundtracks and such ... they're just TOO perfect not to be!

Love their Z-card (inside) too; very creative, very original. Man, the bass player puts me to shame! (Speed, I'm told, comes with time and I've stopped having any to put into it!)

I had your CD on, I was dancin' ... wish I knew more belly dancing; bet it's great fun to do "with" it ...

and I so seldom get to hear "new" bands ... don't go out as much as I used to ... so it was specially a treat! Now, must go out and dance some more!"

5 out of 5 stars "Rush" wearing a fez ..........1999-07-31

I'm serious ... they're that good! Being a lyricist, I'm not usually moved by instrumentals, but this music spoke to me in ways only a "Royal Chicken to Go-Go" could ... I had to move (and felt an almost overwhelming urge to go buy a pair of white boots and a VW bug...)

Excellent blend of virtuousity, intensity, humor and cool rhymthm changes. Why I haven't heard these guys in a movie soundtrack yet, I don't know! Even their recorded live track, "Lumbago" is tight.

These guys blew me away! When ya coming to California??

4 out of 5 stars Excellent "surf" guitar driven music.......1999-05-26

This band is very much in the Huevos Rancheros vain of "surf" guitar driven music. This disc keeps getting better each time I play it.
