Second only to Riverdance as an international Irish showbiz phenomenon, previous installments of this Platinum-selling extravaganza have become beloved PBS standards. The original buxom quartet of female singers, Lisa, Maev, Orla, and Chloe, have duly been joined by Hayley and are, as usual, backed by a full symphony orchestra and choir, plus enough traditional instruments (the house fiddler, Mairead, is a powerhouse) to keep things legit. The material ranges from folkloric ("Dúlaman" is best known from Clannad's legendary rendering), to a standard from another Celtic nation ("Caledonia," Dougie McLean's love letter to his native Scotland), to classical lite (Handel's poignant "Laschia Ch'io Pianga"), to movie hits ("Somewhere Over The Rainbow" in a delicately lovely, a cappella, close-harmony treatment), to homegrown New Age (Enya's "Newgrange"). Most tracks are produced to turn, presented in the aural equivalent of Technicolor or day-glo, in which colors pop while diverging ever so slightly from nature. In short, although the album offers fresh material, it covers old ground -- but this is exactly what the act's target audience expects and desires. Fans of acoustic folk would likely find the prevailing aesthetic a touch garish, but fans of Sarah Brightman and Il Divo will be diverted and thrilled. The deluxe package offers four bonus tracks, three of them live, plus a silver claddagh charm. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Irish Music.......2007-07-11

Loved the range of voices. Had already seen the show on PBS and have the previous CD and DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest CD ever.......2007-07-10

I have never heard such beautiful harmony and vocals! The music was just wonderful! The orchestra was outstanding! I have already decided that "The Prayer" is going to be sung at my wedding. I can't help but cry every time I hear that song sung by Chloe (I have already bought the sheet music for it:))There were a couple of songs that got a little boring but for the most part it was GREAT!!! The DVD is magnificent as well! It has about 6 or 7 more songs.

5 out of 5 stars A great continuation of the first Celtic Woman album........2007-06-28

This is a CD that can be enjoyed by all who like M E H DI, E N Y A or even Loreena Mckinnett. After seeing them on PBS, getting the first CD and seeing them in concert I am hooked. These ladies can SING!
The bonus songs make the album definatly worth the extra few dollars...it includes the fun, upbeat, songs Celtic Woman performs at the ending of their live shows....I was so hoping they would put them on an album. Live or not, the sound quality is PERFECTION, they sound studio quality. I was a little hesistant at first about the addition of the new member...but she rounds the group up nicely.

I bought this DVD and CD as a gift for my husband's birthday. We saw a preview on public television and he immediately asked for it for his birthday. We already own the first Celtic Woman DVD and CD (also seen on public tv and purchased thru Amazon)and this is an amazing sequel to the original. All new music and a beautiful setting for this irish music. The women's voices are ethereal, very much worth listening to and watching over and over again.

Fueled by healthy public appetite for traditional melodies and quasi-ethnic roots, the crossover genre continues to flourish with this debut release from Ireland's Celtic Woman ensemble. The brainchild of Sharon Browne, Dave Kavanaugh (founders of Ireland's successful Celtic Collections label) and young Riverdance touring company musical director David Downes, CW's five young women musicians and vocalists offer up an ever pleasant, Eire-savvy fusion of folk, pop and classical influences. Avoiding the intrusive, club-beat/sex kitten window dressing of Bond, the ensemble tackles material that ranges from the expected (spare, lovely covers of "Danny Boy" and "Ave Maria") to more adventurous fare like "Nella Fantasia" (Ennio Morricone's vocal adaptation of his rapturous theme from The Mission) and Enya's "Orinoco Flow." Elsewhere, "The Butterfly" offers up fiddle-fueled take on their Riverdance parallels (which also get a workout on the live bonus tracks), if renditions of Downes' originals like "One World" and "Send Me a Song" and "Someday" from Disney's animated Hunchback of Notre Dame hew slavishly to the middle of the road -- which largely seems the album's easy-listening intention. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Totally Hooked!.......2007-06-27

True confession time: I am hooked on Celtic Woman . . . and it's getting worse! Or should I say better? The first Celtic Woman album I bought was Chloe's Walking in the Air, then it was Meav's A Celtic Journey, and today I finally got the group's famous blow-out debut. Several of the tracks are also on Chloe's album, so I wasn't sure if I should get it, but I'm so glad I did. There are a lot of songs I haven't heard before, and even the one's that are on Chloe's CD have different arrangements and more of a Celtic flare here. Favorite tracks: 1) Walking in the Air, 2) May it Be (so beautiful, have never heard it before), 3) Orinoco Flow (I always heard of it as Sail Away -- was so delighted!), 4) The Soft Goodbye (warm and touching), 5) You Raise Me Up (an all time favorite, and the song they were singing on TV the moment I walked into my Grandparent's house and discovered this whole new world of music!). Celtic Woman is not just for fans of Celtic music. It is for anyone who appreciates beauty, culture, and inspiration. Celtic Woman, "May it be you'll journey on to light the day."

5 out of 5 stars sailing away through the cosmos of my soul.......2007-06-26

Celtic woman is an album rich with atmospheric delight that fuels the flame of desire in my groin. In the still moments of the night, the Celtic Woman and I traveled starspeed through the cosmos...the cosmos of my soul. Of the stars we made a nest, and I gave it to my lascivious little girl-child with the passion of midnight lovers in a lavishing and spontaneous tryst. It was like seeing the world from the first time...so distantly from our cosmic love nest. This incandescent love affair would have been nothing without the shimmering and enchanting beauty that is...Celtic Woman.

Lush...extravagant...heavenly...enchanting...captivating...mouthwatering...paralyzing...tantalizing...enrapturous...electrifying...tearing...jolting...violating...opening...closing...raging...typing...wiping...crying...cleaning...organizing...disorganizing...energizing...regionalizing...immigrating...love-staining...bleaching...breaking...tapering...circumsizing...exhasperating...womanizing...shoe-sizing...myrrhmizing...unescaping...unleashing...power-washing...gaping...bleeding...fermenting...mummifying...people dying...niggas starving...bitches bleedin'...gettin rich or dyin' tryin'...deodorizing...and not to mention, breathing the crisp air of originality.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-06-18

The Irish lass in me loves the genre. The singer in me loves the artistry. Since buying it, I have given this CD again and again as a gift to friends who love music, Celtic or otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Melodic and haunting.......2007-06-13

Found these gals on public t.v. They are just wonderful. In a time when you can't make out most vocals of current pop music, you'll enjoy being able to understand and appreciate these lovely songs and very gifted singers.

This is a great album if you like CW. You will not find typically[traditional] Irish music; but it can be compared to a Las Vegas show.

ladies do a great job harmonizing.

From the moment I first heard their Slane Castle concert on PBS, I LOVED Celtic Woman's music. They all have BEAUTIFUL voices. The youngest, Chloe, is amazing. I have this CD, the concert DVD that goes w/ it, their first concert on DVD (at the Helix in Dublin), and the CD that goes w/ it.

5 out of 5 stars CD GREAT, SHIPPING NIGHTMARE.......2007-07-10

This CD, as everyone has previously mentioned, is absolutely awesome. I purchased two of the 'deluxe' editions, one for myself and one for my mother's 91st birthday. The shipping, direct from [...], was a disaster. They will say shipping dates are 'estimated,' however, they went far beyond that. I got an email after two weeks saying they were having some kind of unspecified problem filling the order and then got the product about 10 days after that. Totally unacceptable. I've always had excellent service from Amazon sellers (aftermarket), but I will certainly discourage my friends from giving me Amazon gift certificates in the future, as they have done in the past. Shame, Amazon!

One of the more impressive things about A Christmas Celebration is its glowing immediacy. The record's rich vocals and colorful instrumentals create a concert-like setting, reprising the season's most loved hymns, carols, and pop standards, along with a Gaelic version of "That Night in Bethlehem." Unexpected numbers such as "Christmas Pipes" and "Carol of the Bells" (here led by the spirited fiddling of Mariread Nesbitt) only enhance an already engaging disc that finely weaves between the piety of classical music and the playfulness of pop. Chloe Agnew, Orla Fallon, Lisa Kelly, and Meav Ni Mhaolchatha combine their Celtic voices against orchestral arrangements and sparser settings--spiked with the traditional Irish fare of uilleann pipes, harp, and ancient choral harmony--to deliver an assortment of reverent but lively arrangements that wouldn't be out of place at a church, concert hall, or good Irish celli. --Martin Keller

Amazon.com

Irish producer/arranger David Downes, the creative mastermind behind Celtic Woman's chart breakthrough and burgeoning international success, here conjures up an inviting holiday showcase for his neo-superstar crossover quartet. He pushes the group's crowd-pleasing formula into more expansive arrangements with the Irish Film Orchestra, supplemented by a strong core of featured instrumentalists, including Downes himself. If the ethnic folk influences that gave the group its name are sometimes less pronounced, the result is a collection whose dignified, pop elegance often transcends national boundaries. The vocal performances are expectedly polished, with the quintet breaking off into smaller units and solo showcases such as Lisa Kelly's Broadway-lullaby take on "The Christmas Song," a neo-classical "Panis Angelicus" by Chloe Agnew, and the muscular orchestral/choral setting for Mariead Nesbitt's earthy fiddle on "Carol of the Bells." The quintet (backed only by Nesbitt's spare strings) harmonize richly on "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and bring their trademark neo-Celtic charms more fully to bear on intimate translations of "Silent Night" and "The Wexford Carol" as well as a glorious take on the Gaelic traditional "That Night in Bethlehem." Perhaps to remind fans of their true range, the swinging, big-band bonus track "Let It Snow" closes the collection with upbeat flair. --Jerry McCulley

Elizabeth Cook's cornbread-and-cracklings approach to modern country music isn't everybody's cup of homebrew. But her backwoods lineage is genuine: her daddy learned to play doghouse bass in a Georgia prison band, doing 11 years for running moonshine. And there are plucky moments--especially on "Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman," where she sounds like she could be the Coal Miner's Daughter's feminist grandkid. On this, Cook's fourth album, producer Rodney Crowell knows how to frame her as both authentic and hip, bringing alt-country prince Bobby Bare Jr. on board for the affecting mountain love song "Rest Your Weary Mind," and elsewhere imbuing her original shuffles and ballads with chickin'-pickin' guitars, languid fiddle solos, and even a jew's harp on the hoedown-ish "Times Are Tough in Rock 'n' Roll" ("All my feelings, all my fears/Were confirmed with Britney Spears.") There's a surprise around every corner--"He Got No Heart" is a sassy throwback to Wanda Jackson, while "Mama's Prayers" evokes the threadbare innocence of Iris DeMent, and "What Do I Do" finds Cook's twangy soprano leaping into the honky-tonk stratosphere. But get ready for her cover of the Velvet Underground's "Sunday Morning," which she dang near makes her own. Then again, that's something you might expect from a girl with an affinity for vintage cocktail dresses who still insists on baiting her own hook. --Alanna Nash

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars how country music should be.......2007-07-08

As I listened to Elizabeth Cook's new album Balls, I wanted to open the window and scream, "Why doesn't country radio play her songs?" I love country music that sounds authentic, the kind that one has to search the internet to find. Cook's music definitely fits the bill. I really appreciated the blend of different old-time sounds: bluegrass, rockabilly and traditional country. Cooks seamlessly blends the three styles while giving it her own unique twist.

Balls is a stellar album from an undervalued singer. All eleven tracks are fantastic and make for great car-ride play. Not only does Cook possess a sweet soprano voice similar to Alison Krauss, but great songwriting ability as well. On the opening track, "Times are Tough in Rock n' Roll," a bluegrass-flavored tune, Cooks makes her disapproval with the current state of pop music known loudly and clearly. "Sometimes It Takes Balls to Be a Woman" is a rousing feminist anthem with a rockabilly sound. "He Got No Heart" blasts a lover with the searing line: "I'd shoot him down if I knew where to aim."

Perhaps one day country radio will wake up and discover Elizabeth Cook is the real deal: a traditional country singer with soul, and a songwriter with much to say.

5 out of 5 stars country music.......2007-06-12

This is what country should sound like. Miss Cook has 3 cds now and every one is great. Why haven't I heard her on country music stations? She is far better than the majority of country "stars" today.

5 out of 5 stars Back To Country Basics.......2007-05-30

I am a country music LOVER! I love everyone from Loretta to Gretchen but I have a new LOVE with Elizabeth Cook. This album is getting country back to its roots in the likes of Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette. If you love country music you will not be sorry with the BALLS album. GET SOME BALLS!!!

5 out of 5 stars Cookin'.......2007-05-28

"Balls" is Cook's finest record to date. Following the excellent "This Side Of The Moon" with a collection of up-tempo shuffles, wry observances and heartfelt ballads, "Balls" delivers on all fronts. No need for EC to skim the surface of her rural upbringing by talking about "muddin'" and "hick towns" and all of the transparent Music Row nonsense that passes for Country music these days. Cook is the genuine article, and her songs ring simple and true.

"Rest Your Weary Mind" is a meditation on helping her man decompress after a hard day of Life. Sung as a duet with Bobby Bare, Jr., Cook's refrains provide soothing balm to Bare's laments. Conway and Loretta never did it any better.

"Down Girl" is a snaphot of a melancholy friend's marital woes, and the stark production and quiet mood give it a lullaby feel. Beautiful.

"Gonna Be" and "Times Are Tough In Rock and Roll" are clever, light-hearted romps through the pleasures and pains of being on "the ladder", but only a rung or two up, detailing life on the road and at home for an indie artist.

"Momma's Prayers" reveals a sentiment Hallmark only wishes they could put into words.

Backed by roots rock guitar ace (and husband) Tim Carroll and the cream of Nashville's roots session players including guitar masters Kenny Vaughan and Richard Bennett, Cook's vocals are sure and plaintive, sassy and seductive. Producer Rodney Crowel kept a light touch on the proceedings, allowing the songs and the players to meet at the point of "just enough" - nothing here sounds like a demo or a New Country polished cliche.

This kind of real music is out there, despite the major labels best efforts to ignore it (see "Oh, Brother Where Art Thou?"). If you are just getting hip to EC, check out all of her albums. Now that Rolling Stone, CBS Sunday Morning, AT&T Blue Room, and Dwight Yoakam are on board, it might be too late to say "I knew her when...", but Cook is that rare new friend that sounds like an old friend. Make yourself at home, put this record on.

5 out of 5 stars Great album.......2007-05-10

Chloe has one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. I love this album. I only wish this album had Chloe's rendition of Ava Maria. Chloe is only 18 or 19 and I can only imagine her voice becoming more beautiful as her vocal talents mature. She truly has the voice of an angel!

walking in the air. Her voice is good for this song, but for the rest of the songs, I think her voice is a little too thin, no strong emotion to support it.

5 out of 5 stars Walking in the Air - Chloe Agnew.......2007-06-20

A perfect choice of songs to showcase the talents of this young "Celtic Woman" soprano. It's a joy to listen to over and over and compliments the other solo CDs put out by the other individuals from the Celtic Women group. So much talent! I will look forward to Chloe's next solo CD.

1 out of 5 stars Celtic Woman #1.......2007-06-14

If you're going to own only one of the myriad of Celtic Woman CD's, this is the one. Yes, there's only one performer; however the range of musical selections is quite large and typical of the best fare on other Celtic Woman productions. It's become my first choice when I'm in this musical mood.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Singer.......2007-07-23

What a pleasant surprise when I played this CD for the first time. Lisa Kelly has a terrific voice and is a top singer. She's better than America's Kelly Clarkson hands down. She needs to perform more in the U.S. and on U.S. television here. What a wonderful voice. The song "Now We Are Free" is my personal favorite. All I can say is more, more...we want more. A+++

5 out of 5 stars Lisa Kelly.......2007-07-13

Absolutely beautiful voice...always smiling...great stage presence! Her vocal range, I think, is larger than the other girls. She is my favorite of all the girls.

5 out of 5 stars Would give this 6 stars if I could..........2007-07-12

A blow-out production of wondrous Celtic music tha offers affirmation and comfort, especially suitable for someone facing significant challenges in his or her life. Beautifully produced... offers hours of enjoyment, where the meaning goes deeper with every hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2007-07-06

Celtic Woman is a musical ensemble comprised of five Irish and one New Zealander female artists - five vocalists (including Lisa Kelly), and one violinist. This wonderful album is a collection of 11 tracks, all the work of the incomparable Lisa Kelly. Lisa was born into a musical family, and is well known for her singing of classical and Celtic songs - she spent five years as the lead female vocal for Riverdance! I must say, this album shows off her ability to its best.

I like having nice music to listen to at work, and this album is one of my favorites. While working, I love the angelic sound of Lisa's voice sweeping out of my speakers. Overall, I found this to be a great album, one that is always wonderful to listen to. I give it my highest recommendations!

5 out of 5 stars Lisa! The best of the Celtic Women!.......2007-07-04

This is a wonderful CD, very relaxing to listen to on the porch with an ice tea in your hand. There are some repeats of her songs from "Celtic Woman" but they were my favorites anyway.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkplug.......2007-07-13

Mairead is my 15 yr old son's favorite of all the Celtic Woman ladies. My husband has nicknamed her "sparkplug" because of the way she prances and skips around on stage while she is fiddling and playing her violin. She is so talented and plays beautiful w/ such emotion in her face. We saw Celtic Woman first on PBS and I was hooked. I wish she had more music on this CD that was from the Celtic Woman Dvd's that I have.

4 out of 5 stars fantastic violin player.......2007-07-03

I was absolutely awe-struck by her music on Celtic Woman-Live at Slane Castle. The way that she moved and still played beautifully. I really looked forward to hearing Raining UP. Unfortunately, I feel that her accompanying music tended to distract from her talent. I would have preferred to have heard her given the attention so I could enjoy her playing. This album does not damage her ability at all

5 out of 5 stars Super performer!.......2007-06-14

Mairead is the best. This is a great cd!

This album shows her versitality with tradional as well as modern styles such as jazz and funk. A must have for any fan of "Celtic Woman" as well as virtuiso violin performances.

Alongside Ghost, another romantic comedy drama, Pretty Woman dominated the box office of 1990. The movie revitalised Richard Gere's career, and made a superstar of Julia Roberts, launching her on a string of hugely successful romantic comedies including My Best Friend's Wedding (1997), Notting Hill (1999), and, reuniting her with Gere and Pretty Woman director, Garry Marshall, The Runaway Bride (1999). Inevitably the movie's theme song is Roy Orbison's "Oh Pretty Woman", sounding fresh as ever. And if that is a typically male view of feminine attractions, Natalie Cole tells the other side of the story with the unrepentant "Wild Women Do". David Bowie provides an update of one of his greatest hits, with "Fame 90" and Robert Palmer describes "Life In Detail". The remainder of the album is a snapshot of up-and-coming acts at the beginning of the 90s, with Go West's massive hit, "King Of Wishful Thinking" and Roxette's chart smash "It Must Have Been Love" setting the agenda for slick, well produced power-pop. As nostalgia for the time just before dance took over the charts, or simply as a highly polished souvenir of one of the most popular movies ever made, Pretty Woman requires, as Peter Cetera appropriately adds, "No Explanation". --Gary S. Dalkin

5 out of 5 stars Song title and artist for "I want Money".......2007-03-25

Does anyone know the song "I Want Money, lots and lots of money" ? I know I heard this song in the movie "Pretty Woman".....also who sang the song? I can't seem to find it anywhere....thanks...

5 out of 5 stars Pretty Woman.......2007-01-30

Pretty woman is the greatest movie ever made and along with the soundtrack its even better. i enjoy most of the songs and my favorite song would have to be "it must have been love." theres another person that enjoys this song very much too and it is he who made me buy this soundtrack. i listen to this particular song every day pretty much.

5 out of 5 stars Dammi tu forza, o cielo.......2006-07-14

For anyone who knows latin, you will see that it does not mean Heaven, Give you to me...
Dammi tu forza, o cielo= Dame tu fuerza o cielo=Heaven give me your strength!!!

But thank god you guys found the name of the song playing at the opera, it is beautiful.

4 out of 5 stars no kenny G? )-:.......2006-06-11

@ TravelJunky...the easy listening track played while Julia is wearing a tie is called "Songbird" by Kenny G..Thats my favorite too!!...which is why I was abit disappointed that it wasn't included on this CD...Nevertheless, all the other songs DO make up for it..I can say this is easily one of the best classic movie soundtracks..Each song is captivating in its own way especially Go West's "King of Wishful thinking" and Roxette's "It must have been love"..Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Classic Movie.......2006-04-24

Does anyone know the song/artist of the instrumental that is being played while Julia (with only a tie on and sitting in candlelight) waits for Edward to come home after her day of shopping?

What goes around, comes around. As the resident rock star in Nickel Creek (contrasting with the trio's more reserved Watkins siblings), mandolinist Chris Thile has sent his music soaring in surprising directions from its bluegrass base. Though this solo release finds him dipping into the songbooks of the White Stripes ("Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground") and the Strokes ("Heart in a Cage"), much of the music sticks closer to tradition than Thile has in recent years. Among the highlights are an uptempo romp through Gillian Welch's "Wayside (Back in Time)," a pretty fair yodel on Jimmie Rodgers's "Brakeman's Blues," the close harmonies of the bluesy "If the Sea Was Whiskey," and Thile's original "You're an Angel and I'm Gonna Cry," classic country weeper. Five of the fourteen cuts are instrumental, with the opening "Watch 'at Breakdown" combining bluegrass instrumentation and jazzy sophistication, and "The Beekeeper" giving Thile's fingers a chance to fly. --Don McLeese

1 out of 5 stars Chris Thile and HOW TO LOSE A CROWD.......2007-06-12

Chris Thile and HOW TO LOSE A CROWD!!! Oh my....somehow, one of the best mandolin players to walk this earth puts everyone to sleep again and again. I've seen him 3 times with this band. The crowd starts gathering their chairs and leaving. People are yelling to speed it up and heignores. Why is always the closing band...I have no idea.
I'm bored thinking about it.....

2 out of 5 stars An average album ruined by the F word.......2007-05-29

I agree with Solocoyote's review 100%. Why Chris decided it was necessary to put the F word into this album is beyond me. Did he want to appear tough or to be taken more seriously? It's truly a shame. I loved the last Nickel Creek album (one of the few country-ish groups I enjoy as I mostly listen to alternative music) and thought I would enjoy this CD, too. Some of the songs are really good, especially "You're an Angel, And I'm Gonna Cry." Also, the instrumental tracks are really fun because it allows everybody to go crazy with their instruments. A lot of the songs, though, are boring and uninspired and left me wanting more. "Heart In A Cage" ruins the album for me, though, with unneccessary language. Unfortunately, I'll probably never buy another Thile or Nickel Creek CD because of this. Hopefully, using this word was worth it for him.

3 out of 5 stars WTF?.......2007-05-14

I don't know what to say. I was enjoying this album immensely. Just as much as my NickelCreek albums. Until Chris decided he needed to use the "f" word.

Call me old fashioned but I am incredibly dissapointed that Chris Thile decided to go that far. The music is great but I will not be buying the next Chris Thile album. There is plenty of music out there that does not require me to be guarded about who I play it around.

5 out of 5 stars Do You Like Good Music?.......2007-04-26

Are you kidding me? If you like good music, do yourself a favor and buy this album...and every other anything that Chris Thile has had anything to do with musically. Yes, that's a lot of music. DO IT ANYWAY! If you have an open mind, and tend to know good music when you hear it, get his Deceiver album. It will make you feel like you've discovered another wonder of the world...or the cure to a disease. Turns out it's just music, but it feels like something else...something more.

This isn't good music. This is the best music. Seriously. It will make your heart full, be prepared. Know ahead of time the possible symptoms so you don't mistake them for a medical condition. You will perceive a swelling in your chest, kind of an ache...but the best possible kind. Your body may move uncontrollably. Do not be afraid, these are common side-affects and should be embraced.

To know this music is to love it. If you know it and don't love it, I have nothing to say to you. Go away!

4 out of 5 stars Great Bluegrass.......2007-03-08

I had never heard of Chris Thile until I saw his band doing their rendition of Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground on CMT. Some of the songs are not traditional bluegrass, but they are good jams none-the-less.
