Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely fantastic, but..........2005-06-10
Though being a professional singer, I've only recently discovered Samuel Barber's songs. I'm glad I did it, because Barber wrote some of the most beautiful art-songs I've ever heard in my life. From the earliest to the latest song, it's all pure quality, with few - if any - exceptions.
This recording is a great acquisition, not only for the fact that it includes *all* the songs Barber wrote, but also for Thomas Hampson's magnificent and moving performance.
Unfortunately, the female singer (Cheryl Studer) almost manages to completely spoil this pleasant experience: her artificial, dull, often-completely-out-of-tune (?) singing is the reason for my 4 out of 5 rating. Otherwise, it would definitely be a five star recording.
Well,its about time!.......2002-04-05
Finaly,a compleat edition of these wonderfull songs by this wonderfull and sadly underrated composer.
The songs are varied and span the composers entire creative years.
They range from the romantic,child-like youth compositions(the daisies)threu his almost brahms sounding period( sleep now, nocturn, sure on this shining night)to his tragic, disenchanted
older years.
The hermit songs&the French ones are a particular delight. We all know just how wonderfull Hampson is ,but Studer is also fine & pure sounding-A total joy!
The best song-CD EVER released! etc........2000-04-16
I'm not even kidding. This really is the best song-CD ever released. Don't laugh until you hear it... then you'll see for yourself. Where to begin! Barber-- his orchestral works are great for the most part, the Knoxville setting for Orchestra and soprano is mediocre, the piano sonata is also great BUT: the heart of this composer is in his songs. And here they ALL are, including the 10 unpublished songs from his youth. There's Nae Lark is one of only three songs I've ever heard that made me burst into tears on FIRST listening... Barber was around 17 when he wrote it! Bessy Bobtail could make a person drop dead in the right mood. The Joyce settings are so true to the poet's intentions! And the final 3 songs...especially A Green Lowland of Pianos show that Barber NEVER EVER lost his musical voice and razor-sharp talent. This compilation also includes the sincere and depressing On Dover Beach setting-- few if any composers besides Barber have ever managed a successful setting of Arnold's multilayered poem. OK... what if you don't like Thomas Hampson... I know there are some out there who think he's an odd singer... too much rubato, too much bravura? I promise you, you'll like him here, you may even grow to love the guy... if Hampson's ever been sincere and if there's ever been a composer whose music is well suited to his voice, it's Barber...guaranteed. I think this compilation also proves (ok, arguably, I'll admit) that complex tonal song settings pose many more compositional challenges than any of the atonal song-music produced in this century. I can't think of any atonal composer outside of Webern who could shake a stick at the harmonic ingenuity of Barber here. (Just so lightning doesn't strike me... Sir Michael Tippett is also a fine song composer, but he's NEVER been atonal, just EXTENDED tonal.) Barber, Barber, Barber... buy this now. These songs are so powerful that I can remember as vividly as yesterday exactly where and when I first heard every one of these songs and what I was feeling... they quite literally imprinted themselves in my mind. Don't cheat yourself out of this experience... buy this now!
A Complete Joy.......1999-12-01
When I bought this record I had not heard any of the Barber songs before, but what a pleasant surprise they proved to be. These are beautiful romantic songs, and Studer and Hampson perform them very well. The recording sound is also very good. Warmly recommended.

1986 album for the British hard rock institution.
Customer Reviews:
Suprizingly good cd this.......2007-01-07
Status quo broke up in 1984 and released their End Of The Road video.
2 years later they decided to reform without their bass player Alan Lancaster.I was dubious about getting this album but i thought what the hell.I wasnt into the modern scene.
I was so suprized at what a good cd this was. Some of the songs here i kept playing over and over such as In Your Eyes,Save Me ,Red Sky and the supurb Overdose, man i love that song.
I could name all the songs as sensational here,Speechless is also a brilliant song as well as the title track In The Army Now.
Invitation is a slower song but even thats damn good.
Dreamin' ,Rollin' Home ,and Calling are also top songs, now lets play this cd again!!!!
This whole cd is fantastic from start to finish. Most people seemed to think they were past it at the time and did not give this cd a fair go.
I have alot of Quo albums and cds and this is definitly one of my favorites.
If you give this cd a go you wont be disappointed.
The first of the worst.......2006-05-13
I was a HUGE Quo fan in the 70s. No other band interested me at that time. My first ever single bought was Mean Girl. I even checked out,to my disappointment the 60s Quo (Matchstick men et al).We had Ma Kellys Greasy Spoon,Dog of 2 Head,Piledriver,Hello,On the Level,Quo,Live - WOW! All Classic Boogie. Just Supposin, Never too Late, Back to Back had their moments, and when original drummer John Coghlan left prior to 1 + 9 + 8 + 2, things would never be the same, and they were'nt. Supposedly the song that killed the Quo was Marguerita Time which, all in all was the reason Alan Lancaster left,as he wanted to keep the Rockin Boogie in the band and no bland material. When Lancaster left with Pete Kircher, the replacements were ex Climax Blues Band replacements Jeff Rich and Rhino Edwards. Climax Blues Band were once a brilliant out and out Blues Rocking band, but turned into a hit and miss pop come soul band.Edwards and Rich in both cases didnt suit either band. In The Army Now has to be the BIGGEST disappointment of my life. Going was the Boogie, going was the hair and gone was my support of a once mighty force. This album turned them into the joke my friends were warning me about years earlier (They only know 3 chords etc). This Quo should have changed the name from Status Quo to Rossi-Parfitt. The term "Status Quo" was meant to mean keeping it the same. The latest version of Quo are still trying to churn out their trademark Boogie, but virtually everything they do now is based around that 10 year period when they could do no wrong. What Quo really should have done was a straight out Blues album, even if they were all covers, instead of the pop drivel covers they consistantly churned out (Fun fun fun - Dont stop - you know the rest). I gave up after this album.
Symbol of the era.......2003-08-01
Status Quo at that point was more of an institution and show-business machine than a hot and ground-breaking rock'n'roll pioneers, but the title track, You're In The Army Now, epitomized the late eighties as much as any tune released around that time.
The record brings back memories of spectacular, breath-taking Status Quo shows of the period, the reflection of late eighties decadence with yuppies and red 3-series BMWs, all that thing. May sound a little bit naive now - but there is nothing wrong with that.
Strong melody fibre, energetic and uplifting rhytm and strong vocals - all the hallmarks of the bygone era of polished eighties rock are there, which makes the album worth buying.
Great album.......2000-07-12
This is one of the best Status Quo albums ever. It includes a variety of great songs, such as "Dreamin'", "Rollin' Home" and the brilliant hit single "In the Army now". Highly recommended.

A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

If you give this cd a go you wont be disappointed.

follow up.......2003-12-14
Oops, sorry, forgot about the soloists. John Aler has a brighter tenor sound, not as dark as Robert Tear, but the way he handles the recitative text is very similar. Both he an John Ostendorf are a little heavy on the vibrato for my taste, but their diction is not that much skewed by it. J. Ostendorf is a heavy, rich bass, which is striking when you first hear it against Aler's brighter lyric voice. It almost seems wooly, but he steers it away from any Wagnerian tendancies to create a striking bu handsome compliment. Baird is gorgeous- it's that simple. She is not my favorite, but she comes real close. With a voice reminiscent of Emma Kirkby and expression along the lines of Janet Baker, it's a refreshing treat among all these increasing Helden-Sopranos who think that baroque music gives them an excuse to through all delicacy out the window. Over all, this recording is more of a 4 1/2, and I think the most well balanced one may come across.
diamond in rough.......2003-12-14
The conductor may be no Raymond Leppard, but he's preferable by a great stretch than some of these other "new baroque" recordings out there where everything is a forte marcato allegretto. He maintains the baroque atmosphere, much like Harnoncourt's sound (is this he? I don't know who the conductor is). The chorus also has the baroque sound, but my goodness! Thank God for a chorus with proper vowels and a nice sound! Much better than some Deutsche Grammaphon choruses I've heard. If you like the Monteverdi Choir with Gardiner, you'd probably like this chorus as well (I myself am a choister and soloist specializing in oratorio and other such sacred music).
An occasional Haendel........1999-10-26
The enclosed booklet is too poor. The singers are only good (the best is the soprano). Only good also the conductor . In this way this Haendel's work seems a minor one. Is really so?
