1 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-02-15

I do not know what it is about AMERICAN BAND. It is like FORD or CHEVY vs BMW or TOYOTA. Something is missing....its get bored after all. Not to mention from the start, it does not have that exciting refreshing kick to it. UK bands and Scandinavian bands some how GETS IT.

5 out of 5 stars Astro creep's grooviest metal.......2007-02-07

Im usually into white zombie not that interested in rob zombie albums I don't hate em but im usually into the old white zombie stuff alot more. the first song has the perfect speed guitar riff groove ELECTRIC HEAD and SUPER CHARGER HEAVEN. REAL SOLUTION # 9 has the slow heavy guitar riffs and rob sings in a very low voice which is hard to hear what he's saying but very good you would have to read the lyrics to understand and the last one was my most favorite MORE HUMAN THAN HUMAN. 5/5 STARS

4 out of 5 stars A heavy experience.......2006-11-17

This album is great from beginning to end. A classic heavy-metal album, from Electric Head to Blood, Milk and Sky, this is a ride that will fire you up and stir the demons from within. One of my most listened to CD's, still a favourite, even today.

5 out of 5 stars "I remember her saying, I'm already dead...".......2006-01-31

Boy, if the only "metal" you kiddies have been exposed to is that whiny HIM junk, I pity you.

THIS is a REAL industrial-metal album. If that's what you want, this is one you're gonna want.

The pounding, heart-pumping drive of "Supercharger Heaven". (DEVILMAN, DEVILMAN!)
The riff-driven "Creature Of The Wheel".
The ominous-sounding opener, "Electric Head: The Agony (Pt. 1)".
The hit, "More Human Than Human".
And so many more.

Also, the fun, B-movie horror theme (artwork, samples, lyrics) that has come to be associated with Rob Zombie's work is clearly present, and it's campy and really adds to the album.

This is a loud, proud 90's staple. Check it out if you wanna scare all the Yellowcard fans.

4 out of 5 stars and you don't already own this because.....?.......2006-01-12

Unlike Rob zombie's sole stuff white zombie is more gritty, has more guitar work going on and doesn't have as much of an industrial influence to it, but it's still there so don't worry. A lot of the songs are an adrenaline rush and will have up and doing something energenic. One thing about white zombie that I like but don't like about other bands is the use of soundbytes because it adds to the music and doesn't distract from it. So if you like Rob Zombie or metal then buy this cd you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Winning album........2007-06-04

This is the typical example of what an excellent rock album should be.

3 out of 5 stars The ozone layer shakes in it's boots!.......2007-03-07

It's 2007 as I stare at the cover of this album as the sonics contained therein wash over me. Do I laugh or cry? Actually a little of both. You see for a debut in 1986 this isn't all bad. In fact the low slung guitar driven tracks do tend to lock onto a plodding mid paced groove like a guided missile and tunes like Nightsongs and Shake Me are pretty cool. Backed up by tunes such as Once Around the Ride, Hell on Wheels and Somebody Save Me there is half of a really good, whisky soaked album here. The other half is fairly bog standard but little of it's offensively bad.

In terms of music these guys are competent enough at what they do. Tom Keifers alcohol stained vocal chords are a world away from the lavender pretty boy tones of many of his contemporaries and there are a bunch of worthy hooks in the tunes - which is the sort of stuff albums like this rely on.

What becomes apparent after a bit of thought is that Cinderella were in a way two bands. One was the music and the other the image. Musically these guys aren't really the glam metal, lesser Motley Crue or Poison types they were marketed as. If anything, if they'd just turned up wearing yer basic jeans and a T-shirt they may of actually found just as big an audience for their honest hard rockin' ethics. And a more long term audience to boot.

Only three stars for this working mans glam as it does only have half a good albums worth of material, but it's got it's own charm and with a different marketing angle from the beginning these boys might of found the 90's less devastating.

4 out of 5 stars Cinderella.......2007-02-22

I know it's an old 80's band...but I just love his raspy voice. Brings back good memories. :)

2 out of 5 stars "What is this "Motley Crue" of which you speak?".......2006-12-18

Cinderella wishes it was Motley Crue...really really hard. But as hard as they wish, they can't come close. They have no speed, no hooks, and no talent. They look like Crue knock-offs, and sound like them too. There isn't really anything worth hearing on this album. Basically, the singer sounds like Bon Scott with laryngitis. That's the only thing that could be considered a plus. There isn't a single memorable song on here, just a lot of droning...yuck. Get some Crue, Ratt, whatever...just not this.

5 out of 5 stars Classic 80's metal album.......2006-09-25

I bought this on vinyl when it was first released and was surprised when I first heard it. These guys were "discovered" by Jon Bon Jovi, so I expected a lite pop-rock disc along the lines of Slippery When Wet. This is much heavier and bluesier than I thought it would be.

As is the case with many bands, this first Cinderella disc is the best of the bunch, although Long Cold Winter and Heartbreak Station sold more copies. "Nobody's Fool" and "Night Songs" got the most airplay, but practically every song on here is a good one.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

4 out of 5 stars decent album.......2007-07-15

I bought this album because I am a huge fan of The Misfits, Samhain and Danzig. I didn't know what to expect.

Musically this album absolutely rocks! It's heavy and very punk but can also be melodic at times.

I am not really a fan of AFI. I know what some of their songs are about (horror punk rock) and even saw them live once back on the Danzig/Samhain tour back at the end of 1999. While they were great live (and the pit was moshing 2 seconds before the music even started) the vocals never really did it for me. I was used to Danzig's rough growl. While I didn't hate it, it was a bit different.

This CD is good but the vocals really don't do it for me. I don't hate the vocals, I just wasn't used to them. They are not so bad now.

Davey Havok wrote all the songs here. For the most part they are dark (how I like em) and the only really bad song here is Invocation. The music for it is great, but the lyrics seem very uninspired and kind of flat. But the rest of this CD is amazing.

Of Power has some great keyboards and the fast drumming by London May is incredible. Stray, Evernight and In The Hills are all a great mixture of Samhain and AFI. The title track here starts a bit slow and is followed by two even better songs in Satiate and Of Man.

Michael is clearly the best song here. The writing is awesome and this is Davey's best vocal. Purevil wasn't quite as good as the other songs, but still decent. And Invocation I have already commented on.

So i can imagine that any AFI or Samhain fan has this already. If not, I would suggest picking it up even if you're a fan on both bands or only one of them. This is a good solid CD. 4 stars for this.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD!.......2007-02-14

This CD is so weird that it's just awesome! i love it, it's addictive. it's a perfect combo of people for this band. i swear that i read that the lead singer of the misfits was in this, but i'm not sure. i don't see or hear anything about him in it... :( oh well, awesome CD.

5 out of 5 stars I love this album!.......2007-01-13

It's only been a month or two that I got this cd and it quickly became one of my favorites. Great lyrics, great vocals, great music. I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars Rock Superteam.......2006-11-03

If you like Afi and high energy music with a classic hard rock feel, then you will love Son of Sam. It's an ally of Danzig(misfits), Afi and Tiger Army. If you like any of those bands you will appreciate this cd. It's not for everyone have you..it's like fine wine, you must already have an aquired taste to like Son of Sam. If you do, you won't be disappointed. This is a classic cd in the staple of Rock. It also makes a good soundtrack while playing Doom or Halo. For those of you who know what I mean, get this rare cd before they are all gone.

5 out of 5 stars one of my all time fav cds.......2006-01-06

This is a great album, the best part is in the lyrics, though the music is good too. The lryics are meaningful, makes you think, and has its own evil but interesting philosophy on life. Listen to "michael" and if you like it, you'll probably like all the other songs. This might not be for everyone if you don't get it.

Transylvamia 90210 is one of the best horror rock albums out. I mean it's up there with (WALK AMONG US) by Misfits. When i got this album i loved every song and still do. Wednesdasy 13 is a genius. So if you like songs about Zombies,Vampires,Monsters,Graveyards and other goulish stuff this is a perfect album for you

5 out of 5 stars Can't Stop Listening to this Album!!!.......2006-09-21

For once, FOR REAL!! Amazon suggested a cd to me, I listened to the clips and thought the cd had some crazy cool horror rock tracks. When I got the cd and listened to it in its entirety, I was hooked..Few albums really grab me these days like this one (an album in similiar genre to do so is Rob Zombie's Educated Horses-but everything he does rules anyways!)...

Wednesday 13 is heavy, punkish, campy cool rock!!! The song lyrics are fun & crazy in a dark humor/gothic way...the music is like revved up 50's surfing type monster music with a metal twist.Kinda like Rob Zombie meets the Ramones. The songs are all catchy and twisted. Every song is a blast and the album as a whole is just fantastic..I love blasting "I walked with a zombie"in my car and having poeple turn their heads..it's great!!! And I LOVE the song BAD THINGS...I listen to that one over and over...If you like Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie=get this cd, you'll love it!!!

4 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2006-08-15

Umm,I must admit that at the first listen of this album I was hugly dissapointed.I thought it would be like murderdolls (which I really love),but oh how wrong I was.But now I think its awesome,it's not as good as murderdolls in my opinion but they are quite different, this is more mature. The vocals are better then murderdolls though. The lyrics are not as um,'fun' I guess as murderdolls but I think I should move on about the murderdolls now on this review because they are very different. But anyway um,the music;it's quite heavy on most songs (oh and I love all the heavy ones) and there are (about five) melodic songs on this album (two or three are quite lame in my opinion). But yeah, one song,'house by the cemetery' (which I love) sounds a lot like Rob zombie on vocals, which is fine as I like Rob Zombie, and one song sounds extreeeeemly similar to Marilyn Mansons 'dope hat' up until the chorus but who cares it still rules, and so does Marilyn Manson. But other really cool tracks are 'look what the bats dragged in','I want you...dead','Rot for me','house by the cemetery' and some more too.So yeah.eh eh ehhhhhhh...

5 out of 5 stars Wednesday 13 grows up (a little).......2006-07-28

Well on this CD Wednesday 13 grows up a little. The song are definitly of higher quality both in song writing and production. This is a lot more polished than his previous offerings.
The stand out songs are all on the top of the disc. Look What the Bat Dragged In, I Walked with a Zombie, (My Fav) Bad Things, House By the Cemetery and Haunt Me (which really kicks butt).
I am very pleased and it is constant rotation in my CD player along with the Murderdolls.
Again if your a fan of Alice Cooper and Rob Zombie and heavy metal give this one a spin.

Depeche Mode Tribute Album.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Primarily for "hardcore-fans".......2007-02-06

You would typically not buy this album if you were going to buy one single album to learn more about either Depeche Mode or any of the participating bands. This album is more of something you buy when you know "your" band and just want to know how their songs would sound when other established band play them or how "your" band would interpret Depeche Mode.

4 out of 5 stars Good tribute album........2007-01-20

You know, tribute albums are things I rarely ever care for. In fact, one CD that I would sell if I get the oppurtunity is this one of boring U2 covers that I accidentally bought. But this album not only has some artists who already had a name, but some of the less obvious DM influences. This is part of why I appreciate this CD. Some of the covers were kind of surprising, like "Monument" from "A Broken Frame," and also "Shame" (covered by Self, the only artist I had never heard of prior to this compilation) which I wasn't aware of before I got this. While it's clear how heavily influenced a group like God Lives Underwater is by the group, I wouldn't have known that Monster Magnet and Dishwalla were groups who got influenced by DM.

It's a pretty good tribute, as well. It's really interesting to hear Locust's (not to be confused with the noisecore group) interpretation of "Master and Servant." I never have thought of an S&M-themed song being played so mellow and playful. I really liked Failure's take on "Enjoy the Silence" and the one track I had always been familiar with was the Pumpkins' take on "Never Let Me Down Again." It's surprising that they play that one clean, especially being a B-side of the distortion-happy "Siamese Dream" era. Basically, the first five tracks are my favorites. It is more hit than miss.

There are a couple points that don't really do it for me. "Monument" was never really a favorite of mine to begin with, and I don't care for the remake, either. I wish Monster Magnet would've embraced their style a little bit more on "Black Celebration" as well.

Overall, if you like '90s electronic and alternative music, I recommend this. You'll respect it even if you don't enjoy it. Totally worth getting.

4 out of 5 stars For The Masses.......2006-10-25

I'm not really a fan of the band Depeche Mode, and as a general rule tribute albums are a pretty hit and miss affair (the yawn inducing tribute album to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours featuring Jewel, Tonic, and Elton John at their most boring a prime example). So why do I not only own but thoroughly enjoy this tribute album, featuring artists such as Smashing Pumpkins, God Lives Underwater, Locust, and Rammstein?
It's the lyrics that sell it. These are solid songs, but the fact is the covers are quite simply better than the originals.
The songs that stand out first are the Rammstein cover Stripped, which originally appeared as a bonus track on the album Sehnsucht, and the band Failure whose cover of Enjoy The Silence was a hit on Top 40 during the summer of 1998, but these are not the only good songs on this album.
Others I highly recommend to any potential purchaser of this album include the song Shake The Disease, covered by the band Hooverphonic. Geike Arnaert's delivery on the chorus of the song is way more powerful, to my ears, than the delivery of DM's lead singer Dave Gahan..

Here is a plea
From my heart to you
Nobody knows me
As well as you do
You know how hard it is for me
To shake the disease
That takes hold of my tongue
In situations like these

The melody is not changed much from the 80s techno the original band is known for, but the Belgian band with it's young female lead singer packs the song with more emotion.
Another selling point is the cover of the song Policy of Truth done here by the band Dishwalla, best known for the line from their one hit Counting Blue Cars, "Tell me all your thoughts on God / Cause I'm on my to see Her." Again, the lyrics are better served by another style of music, in this case rock, as opposed to 80s style techno.

Its just time to pay the price
For not listening to advice
And deciding in your youth
On the policy of truth

This album is truly a must have for people who like diamonds in that rough known as the pop music section.
Other Good Tribute Albums: Songs From A Material World (George Harrison tribute), Kindred Sprits (Johnny Cash tribute) and Killer Queen (Queen tribute).

1 out of 5 stars MINDLESS MUSIC FOR THE MINDLESS MASSES.......2006-08-24

If you are a self-loathing manic depressive who wears pointy shoes and black fingernail polish then you probably own this already, the 80's were a horrible decade for music and trying to revive it with newer bands is equally bad.

4 out of 5 stars Various Artists (And The Smashing Pumpkins) For The Masses.......2006-07-16

Various Artists For The Masses

I just bought this album in San Francisco (July 2006) some 8 years after it first came out.
As a long time fan of Depeche Mode who has admittedly not paid them very much attention in recent years I can honestly say that I have been reminded why I used to love them so much. Depeche Mode are bl**dy fantastic and this collection of tributes while not being universally wonderful is well worth a listen. As many people will not have heard this release I really wanted to review it. There are some turkeys and some Xmas crackers and be warned that I get a bit cross about the turkeys. Afterall, this is Depeche Mode we are talking about!

The album kicks off with Never Let Me Down Again by the Smashing Pumpkins. If you asked most fans what their 3 favourite DM tunes were, chances are that this is one of them. It's a defining anthem and it truly rocks. The fans know how good it is. We've all been to the concerts and we've all sung our hearts out. Well.... Wait till you hear what the `Smashing F**kwits' have done to it. It is hard to find the words to describe how wide of the mark they are in trying to capture the essence of NLMDA. I mean if you were going to try and do it any justice at all you might have a stab at keeping some of the power, emotional intensity and sheer b*ll**ks of the original. But no.... I don't know anything about the Smashing Turnips or their own music but it is my best guess from this effort that they basically get stoned, jam for a bit in an ineffectual way, put some p**s weak whiny vocals down, pop to the all night garage for some more skins, finish off the Stellas, and call it a day. I now know why I have never noticed anything the Smashing Numpties have ever done. (0 out of 10) Lets move on, as it gets a lot better from here.

Next up, Fly on the Windscreen cruises into town with laid back funky beats and some interesting vocal harmonies which present the tension in the song in a new way. You can nod your head to this more than the original and the dark undercurrents are maintined behind the slick groove. The vocals are more musical than DGs and they really work. It's cool and different. A big thumbs up to God Lives Underwater. There's nothing wrong with taking a song in a different direction, as long as you have one. (Smashing Wasters take note) (8 out of 10)

Enjoy The Silence by Failure doesn't deviate too much from DMs' first version apart from in the obvious, in that the guitars are in and the synths are largely out. The intro is delicate, the chorus thumps and the voice of Failures' singer (whose name I am shamefully ignorant of) resonates nicely while lacking DGs power. They've messed a bit with some of the melody in an acceptably pleasing way and it is quite ... well, enjoyable, without capturing the heartfelt passion of the original. So.. a modest success. (7 out of 10)

Now the Cure have got their work cut out here, as World In My Eyes is a bit of a personal favourite. The consumate Kraftwerk feel is gone but Robert Smith maintains the angst and delivers a very listenable performance. They've been a bit lazy on the drum programming, just using one loop with no real variation but the guitar riffs and howls are good which I guess is their forte. It's quite catchy and if anything a bit more accessible than the original. Rather lost its edge but overall not a bad effort. (7 out of 10)

Enter Dishwalla, who grind out a full throttle take on Policy Of Truth with a certain amount of welly and lots of guitar. It builds nicely throughout and ends with all guns blazing. The vocals are great and the finale sees a very musical deviation that powers it's way up to a blistering climax. How cool?.... Very. For me this is way better than the original, which I always used to find a bit dull. Can't wait to put this on in the car. Go Dishwalla!
(10 out of 10)

Somebody is presented by Veruca Salt and it gets a passionate workout here. The rhodes piano and cello really work, vocals are very genuine and you can get lost in this version the same way you get lost when Martin sings it. A beautifully constructed copy of one of DMs best ballads. (8 out of 10)

Everything Counts by Meat Beat Manifesto is a bit of let down. It's a little hard to see where the creativity went. It didn't go into the drum programming which while being marginally better than the Cures' is a bit pedestrian. Aside from trotting out the main melody, they don't really offer anything on the melodic front either which kind of just leaves noises. I didn't like their noises. Oh yes .. the vocals. A bit pants as well. (1 out of 10)

Shake The Disease has a really sparse electronic feel to it with silky vocals, both courtesy of Hooverphonic. It's a very simple cover but astoundingly beautiful and totally captures the repetitive hypnotic drive of DMs version. Go Hooverphonic! (9 out of 10)

Locust's Master And Servant has a surreal The Devine Comedy meets light jazz feel to it which puts it just above elevator muzak. This makes it slightly interesting. (2 out of 10)

I guess Shame is a surprise choice for a cover but hey why not. Selfs' version is quite catchy, in yer face and fun. Not worthy of great praise but neither was the original. (5 out of 10)

With Black Celebration we are back in anthem territory. Monster Magnet throw a lot of energy into this and I really wish they hadn't. If you are going to mess with people's melody you better do it good. i.e Compliment the original. Draw it out and reframe it. Add something. Bring something to the party goddamnit! Or as MM see it... crash the party, nick the beer, p**s all over the place and do a runner. (0 out of 10)

Waiting For The Night To Fall by Rabbit In The Moon starts with sparse beats that pick up into light drum and bass (without the bass). The vocal is a bit karaoke and the whole thing goes on for way too long. (7 minutes 34 seconds too long) (1 out of 10)

Appollo 440 take on I Feel You and the result appears to be a draw. The vocals don't really stand up to DGs but there is an energentic feel to the proceedings with some lively samples thrown in to the mix. It's OK (5 out of 10)

Gus Gus cover Monument which is an interesting choice. It's been given a far more up to date feel here while maintaining the sparse simplicity and brooding atmosphere of the original. The production is nice but the vocals are a little bit too bronski beat for my liking. Not a turkey and not a craker. (6 out of 10)

Deftones crank it up for To Have And To Hold and make a reasonable fist of it. The vocals don't quite reach the same sharp edged menace that DG gives it but the rest is all there. Screaching guitar solos and smash it all up finale. Pretty good (7 out of 10)

Finally we have Rammstein's Stripped which is completely awful. But let let's leave that to one side for a moment and deal with something else. It's funny as f**k. The vocal comes across as Rocky Horror Show meets Lordi (of recent EuroVision fame). This is all backed up by wannabe death metal come eurobeat. Whether they approached this cover seriously or not I don't know. I am confused and amused by it. Which is a shame as I'd really like to hear somebody have a proper crack at it. (no idea what mark out of 10 this gets ... probably about 4 for being weird)

For fans who want to hear a different take on their favourite band I thoroughly recommend this collection. Half of it is indeed rubbish but that's what CD rippers and MP3 players are for. If you haven't listened to your old DM albums in a while, this will ensure that you rediscover them. While you're at it get the remastered CDs in 5.1 surround sound. They're great.

5 out of 5 stars "Lost" Songs Are Still Very Welcome!.......2007-06-02

My review is actually 4 1/2 stars. First of all, the quality of the recordings here sound nothing like "demos". With the exception of the one song from 1982, they are all very good. The newest songs (from 1987), take the band on a direction they wanted to go instead of what ended up on "Big Bang" (I wish they'd stop apologizing for that awesome cd). Those two newest songs, however, are not so hard that you can't tell that the band was just maturing. They sound like part Pyromania-era Def Leppard, with some kind of Krokus/Helix sound mixed in. The majority of the songs were written just pre and post "Rock Ain't Dead" -era. That CD ranks as one of my top 5 of all time, so as I listen to the songs that didn't make the cut, I tend to agree. Which is not to say that they're bad, they are all very good, one of them "Keep On Beleiving" is a classic, which should have made "Rock Ain't Dead"
So....if you are a Heavy Pettin fan, you won't be disappointed with this collection, 10 times better than most bands' "demos" that come out years after the band breaks up. If you are not a "Pettin" fan, this is just some great rock that you will love.
By the way, I also own the ultra-rare "Demos '98" CD from the band, but sadly have no story about how it fits into the band's history. If anyone knows, please drop me a line.

    5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-05-28

I love this collection of previously unreleased material for a number of reasons. First, there's evidence of a fine rock band here that had it given the chance of directing its own future would have went all the way to the top. Secondly, because there is more of all the band's influences on this album than on their released material. Thirdly, the track 'My Love For You' is absolutely AOR at its best. Rock on lads.

5 out of 5 stars Heavy Pettin Prodigal Songs is GREAT!.......2007-05-06

This is the finest collection of never released songs from a hard rock band that I have heard in a long time. The music is a little bit on the heavier side than their previously released material of 20+ years ago. Although these "newer" songs were recorded 20+ years ago, they sound new and fresh like the band has just recorded and released a brand new album. The songs really don't sound dated at all, as hard rock and heavy metal are making a true comeback with bands reforming and playing with the old school rock and roll sound of the 1980's but updated just a bit for the 21st century. These bands include Heavy Pettin, of course, Krokus, Judas Priest, and many others.

Buy this cd, as I think that you will find it surprisingly different and heavier than most of their previously released stuff. You won't be disappointed.

An influential TV series of the '90s has generated a dark, eerie, and vaguely campy set of "inspired-by" songs from a diverse group of musical fans. Pride of place here goes to three tracks: the Foo Fighters' delicious cover of Gary Numan's "Down In The Park," a filthy remake of R.E.M.'s "Star Me Kitten" by literary lion William Burroughs, and a titanic, cross-generational collision between Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper on "Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn)." Sheryl Crow's "On The Outside" is a toss-off in this company, while Mark Snow's famous X-Files theme loses its creepy edge in both extended and P.M. Dawn-remixed incarnations. --Jeff Bateman

    4 out of 5 stars Pure 90s.......2006-09-28

Not only is this something for X-Files fans, but also for anyone who is a fan of 90s music. Love the Foo Fighters version of "Down In The Park". Also Nick Caves' "Red Right Hand",that song you always heard but wern't sure who sang it. The opening theme song is so powerful sounding you almost forget that this is music for some sci-fi telvision show on Fox; Full length version too. No heavy metal from Filter however. Rob Zombies song is pretty loud and intense. The REM song is just some music with some old guy talking rather than singing, pretty dumb. I know an X-Files sdrk should have some weirdness but the REM song is one to forget. There are two hidden tracks on this cd. The only way to hear them is to rewind past the first track on your cd player.

4 out of 5 stars For the most part, a great album.......2006-01-25

If you're looking for variety, you would do well to purchase "Songs in the Key of X". Being a fan of "The X-Files" would probably help, but it's not neccesarily required. Where else could you find Sheryl Crow, Rob Zombie, and Screamin' Jay Hawkins all in the same place? Not only is this album a worthy soundtrack to one of the great shows of the 1990's, it's also an interesting collection of music that you probably don't get to hear quite often. While there are some big-name musicians like Foo Fighters, REM, and Sheryl Crow (as mentioned above), their contributions to "Songs In the Key of X" are significantly different from their more popular songs. REM's contribution is noteworthy, for it features novelist William S. Burroughs reciting the vocals to their song 'Star Me Kitten' with music done by the band. It's a moment that's as strange as anything Burroughs devised for one of his novels. While this song doesn't have much in common with the show, it's still one of the finer tunes on here.

In addition to mainstream alternative rock, there's also music by bands who didn't quite make it to the top. Meat Puppets and Soul Coughing both offer up musical tributes to paranormal phemonena, while the normally aggressive Filter tones things down a bit with their song 'Thanks Bro'. Not the best song on this album, but it's worth a glance if you enjoy their other music.

While this album earns points for its eclectic lineup of artists and the high quality of the music featured on it, some of the songs are total disappointments. Danzig's 'Deep' is a monotonous dirge about the usual topics: evil and death. He's done better in the past. PM Dawn's remix of the classic X-Files theme is tolerable, but not as memorable as Mark Snow's original. Perhaps someone like Moby or the Chemical Brothers would have been a more appropriate choice to redo the theme?

So yeah, "Songs In the Key of X" is not the perfect soundtrack. But despite some weak offerings, anyone who enjoys offbeat music and 90's alt-rock should give this album a try. Out of the two X-Files compilation albums released, it's by far the superior choice to the movie soundtrack. At least this album didn't have Sting trying to sound like Bob Marley...

    4 out of 5 stars not bad.......2005-09-03

i always wanted to but this when i was a kid, it got some kick ass tunes on it

5 out of 5 stars A classic collection of rare, dark masterpieces!.......2003-09-02

Fantastic songs here collected beside fantastic artists, each one a bold and artistic masterpiece. Artists include R.E.M., Nick Cave, Sheryl Crow and a William S. Burroughs' take on "Star Me Kitten" that you will not soon forget. For sure an adult album, appreciated only by the outsider or paranormal-infatuated abductee-wannabe, or artist with the respect for briliance. The music is hard to classify, as it usually borders between rock and alterative, sometimes to the acoustic-style soft rock-meets-techno hybred. The music is so well-recorded and performed that it is often hard to imagine that it is nearly ten years old. I think that age will only add to the deeply hard core occult factor of this music, which can truly be discribed as the genuine article.

Okey, so I'm rambeling. It's incredible music! (Not the kind you listen to once and throw away!) My favs here would include "Man of Steel" by Frank Black, "My Dark Life" by Elvis Costello and "If you never say goodbye" by P.M. Dawn, but I love each and every one of these songs intimately. In short, Songs In the Key of X is an occult gem. So turn down the lights, put all chores aside, lay back, crank up the volume and let your imagination be guided along a seamy world of dark paranormal suspicion, lonely fear and optimistic intrigue. My god, the more I think about it the better I really realize that it is! (Rambeling again!)

    So enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars X-File fan or not, this is a great CD.......2003-04-08

Songs in the Key of X cannot really be called a soundtrack; it consists not of songs necessarily from The X-Files but songs inspired by and worthy of inclusion in the show. It's quite an eclectic mix, featuring many dark songs that sparkle with the horrid electricity one associates with The X-Files. The premiere track has to be Red Right Hand by Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. This song is itself part of the lore and mythology of the show; any X-Files fanatic can tell you the story of how Chris Carter heard this song driving home from work one night and fell in love with it. Besides highlighting the road trip of abductee Duane Barry in Season Two, the song has also been featured prominently in the Scream movies, so this one will be familiar to many. Clearly, most of these songs are in the same dark, forceful vein - e.g., Danzig's Deep, Screamin' Jay Hawkins' Frenzy, and Hands of Death (Burn Baby Burn) from the powerhouse duo of Rob Zombie and Alice Cooper. Soul Coughing's contribution Unmarked Helicopters may best fit the milieu of The X-Files and is an excellent song to boot. The Foo Fighters, a band that has never really captured my attention, makes a nice addition with Down in the Park. Frank Black's Man of Steel was a pleasant surprise to me, having only heard a much different kind of performance from him on Gordon Gano's Hitting the Ground.

The great variety of songs here means two things: there is something for everyone here, but every individual will also undoubtedly have a few tracks he/she doesn't particularly care for. Sheryl Crow's On the Outside is a perfectly good song, but it doesn't seem to fit here in my opinion. Elvis Costello's My Dark Life has potential but never succeeds in grabbing my attention. Star Me Kitten from William S. Burroughs & R.E.M. is just strange and almost unexplainable (it also is the primary reason for the Explicit Lyrics sticker on the cover). The big mystery here for me, though, is P.M. Dawn. Not only does their song If You Never Say Goodbye seem out of place, their remix of Mark Snow's excellent X-Files Theme is quite unnecessary given the greatness of Mark Snow's original version that starts this CD off with a bang.

You don't have to be an X-Files fan to enjoy this CD, but fans will have much more appreciation of the ingenuity and creative track selection that went into this album. The liner notes feature some perfectly odd artist drawings of X-Files characters and scenes as well as statements about the album from X-Files bigwigs Chris Carter and David Was. One should not think this album was released just to make money off of the hot X-Files name; there is a lot of quality music here that one might not ever have the chance to discover on one's own.

5 out of 5 stars Harley Davidson Road Songs.......2006-10-25

This is an excellent collection of classic rock songs associated with the open road and a free spirit, just like Harley Davidson Motorcycles.

3 out of 5 stars Some hits and misses.......2005-09-20

As a long time motorcyclist, I was hoping this would be a collection of the greatest riding songs ever. It's not. Bob Segar's ROLL ME AWAY and Bon Jovi's DEAD OR ALIVE are not here. It blows my mind that none of the Harley CDs have ROLL ME AWAY but do have Segar's AGAINST THE WIND, which has nothing to do with riding motorcycles. I might of missed the point, but if it's a Harley CD I'm expecting more songs that are about riding or refer to motorcycles in the song.

4 out of 5 stars Great Party Music.......2005-08-15

This is great music to listen to while you sit around and party with your friends. For me it brings back memories of younger days. We do own a Harley, but to enjoy these tunes, it's not necessary. It's also good listening for just hanging out with the one you love.

    4 out of 5 stars This Rocks!.......2003-07-30

This is a great CD! My only complaints are "Sacred Ground," which doesn't rock, and "Ridin' the Storm Out," which would be ok if it was the live version. But it's not. Other than that, it's the perfect CD for a road trip.

    5 out of 5 stars Wrecking Opinions.......2002-11-08

Awesome CD! That outta the way, this CD is the best compilation of songs I've seen in thirteen and a half years. There's nothing quite as good as listening to Radar Love, I Can't Drive 55, and On The Road Again all on the same disc set! And the songs on this album, even the mistitled Devil Went Down To Georgia (As I remember it it's called Deuling Fiddles), every single one of them, beats anything you could hear on "Today's Hit Music Station". Now, this is my personal opinion, and actually has to deal with a post on the reviews, but Mean Streak needs a life and a few spelling lessons. Sounds to me like Mean Streak is a disgruntled rice-burner boozer with a taste for music about as deep and broad as my pinkie toe. Just my opinion. Oh, and this album is a must-buy.
