Getting Away With It: Live [Import]

This is a live record to cherish. Getting Away with It is a valedictory wave of the flower-petal handkerchief from James founder and singer Tim Booth, who announced his decision to leave the band late in 2001. Recorded at a celebratory hometown show (in Manchester) on the band's farewell tour, the crowd--clapping louder than hailstones hitting a corrugated roof--egg the group on all the way to the checkered flag. They honestly incorporate the odd technical glitch (a bit of feedback from the dobro) and profane slip of the tongue (Booth apologizes to his mum in the audience for a four-letter outburst), and there's no questioning the grandiose melodic momentum ("Laid," "Sometimes," "Sit Down") evident in the hit-laden set list. Despite accusations of conceited arena-rock posturing and winsome folk-thrumming, James wrote some fine songs. Many of them are here. One suspects we haven't heard the last of them (or of Booth) yet. --Kevin Maidment --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars Best Live Album I Own!!.......2006-07-06

I can not say much about this album except that it is pure genius. Every song on this album has tension, buildup, and a connection between a band and an audience that is rarely seen. I recommend this to all James fans, and especially to those who have not heard James. This CD is a great way to see how great this band was. James Lasts!

5 out of 5 stars LONNNNNG!!! Time FAN........2006-02-16

I currently don't own this CD but I intend to remedy that real soon. However I feel qualified to rate it because I have been a James fan since 1989 when I first heard "Ya Ho" and was intrigued by the bands mix of folk and pop rock. This is far too simple of a description for this wonderful band, as over the years they have done many different styles while still remaining James. For examples of their diverse songs you should hear tracks from "Strip-Mining" "Laid" "Wah Wah" and "Whiplash", as each album has very different songs for James while still maintaing some tracks that sound like JAMES.

While I don't yet own this album I also feel qualified to rate it because I have done something several people here are lamenting about. I have seen them LIVE. It was Halloween night '92 and I lived in Boston. I went with a bunch of friends to a club on the channel side area, where ships come into the harbour. The club was called "The Channel", naturally! I believe the club is long gone by now. It was a tiny club with a low ceiling. The night's show was a triple bill show with James, The Soupdragons and Tom Tom Club (ex-Talking Head members band) headlining. James was the opening act and made the best of it. When they hit the stage I was standing about 10-15ft from the stage and very BAKED. James Gott the lead guitarist came out with a mask on and seeing as how I was virtually tripping on the chronic, I just stood there fixated for several minutes as the greens, blues and reds of the stage lights danced across the band. And I thought "what is wrong with the guitarist face??" Then it occurred to me that it was a mask and I remebered it was halloween. DOH!!

Anyhow James' set was amazing and the crowd loved them. In fact while Tom Tom and SD were fine, I think the crowd would have been happier if James had played all night. I know I would have been, without a doubt. So here it is fourteen years later and I am writing about James in concert. They are incredible and I have no doubt this is a GREAT album of them live. I will always have that great night in my memory banks and of course my James t-shirt from the concert. It is bright red with JA on the front, M on the sleeve and ES on the back. Many people just stare at it and then may ask "Who's JA"

With regards to those who query why James was never a huge mega successful group I have an answer for you. THEY WERE!! In America we measure success by whether you made it here in the states. Well by that measurement James wasn't very successful, but in Europe and especially England, their home, they were HUGE. In their heyday of the 90's James could and did headline music festivals that drew tens of thousands to open fields to enjoy James. So America missed out. This problem of good bands never making it big in America is the product of a record industry that patronizes you the listener. They spoon feed you via radio,Mtv....etc what they think you should like and once they get you to buy something, they find 100 other groups that sound the same and pound you with a overload of the same. And on the rare occasion that they do stumble onto a talented musician the constant bombardement of their STAR, because "it's selling" will drive you to hate a good thing. Well that's enough ranting I suspect that if you are reading this you are tring to decide if you should buy this album, as you are all ready a James fan. Well go ahead buy it, because if you can't see them live (which you can't anymore) hearing them is the next best thing.

5 out of 5 stars Pop doesn't get much better than this........2005-11-24

Think of them as U2 without the ego. Instead of the popular kid at school who was always visible and outspoken, James was more like the unassuming quiet guy you'd see every day and barely notice. But down-to-earth as they were, this group could write a mean hook and a joyful soaring chorus with the best of them. Combine that with some intelligent lyrics and a staying power underneath the catchiness, and you've got one of the most modest but fascinating pop catalogues out there. (Even with several hits, they'll always seem like an under-the-radar treasure to me. I'm sure I'm not the only one.) This set can't help seeming like a memento - farewell shows tend to do that - but as a live album it's also top-notch. The band puts everything they've got into a heartfelt performance, and a few small warts only make it that much more honest & personal.

Getting Away also makes a splendid introduction to the group - it covers their entire career in two hours, it's got some material you'd otherwise have to hunt down some import CDs for, and it shows their variety much better than the single-disc best-of. The ambience is almost palpable. The energy is infectious from start to finish. It's easy to imagine how well some of the tunes must have worked as bouncy arena singalongs, but there's also a sincerity that can't be faked, from the modest jokes about technical glitches to Tim Booth's parting farewell ("I'd love to invite you all home for milk and cookies"). Like all James, this stuff is always fresh and never fails to give me a lift. At the heart of it all it's a group and an audience having a great time enjoying some excellent songs.. no flash or showiness required. Simple and fairly common, yes, but it's something that never gets old.

5 out of 5 stars Great Last Show.......2005-05-12

I love this band just to start with. I bought their best of CD and was instantly hooked on songs like Laid, Hymn From A Village, Sometimes, and How Was It For You. Even though I love all of there songs.
I have a huge weakness for this band and especially for this CD. I automatically love everything I hear from them. And even though I knew that they were broken up when I got into them I almost cry when I hear this CD. Maybe because I want to see them live. Maybe because I love the band. I don't know.
But about the CD. It's great. It's a great set list with a loud vocal participant crowd. What else do you want in a live album. All I can tell you is buy this CD if you are a fan of James or you are new. Just get it.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Cow!.......2004-10-14

I discovered James only a few years ago after hearing "Laid" on the radio. Very witty lyrics for that one. How did these guys never make it to superstardom? This double cd is AWESOME. I'm not one to explain the chord changes, etc. I just know what I like. If you like rock n roll then definitely check out this cd. I am stupefied that James never soared into the stratosphere of rock superstardom. The last concert, which is what this is, makes their retirement even sadder. BUY THIS CD.
