Ravishing Music, Ravishingly Sung.......2003-04-09
As a choral singer myself, I was particularly drawn to this new Naxos release of sacred and secular choral music, some of it familiar but much of it quite unfamiliar (at least on this side of the Atlantic).
The disc leads off with what is probably Finzi's most popular sacred choral work, 'God is gone up with a triumphal shout,' set to a text by Edward Taylor. The opening organ fanfare is followed by sung fanfares with men's voices echoing those of the trebles. [The choir in this recording is that of St. John's College, Cambridge, and as such follows the Anglican tradition choirs consisting of boy sopranos, male altos, tenors and basses. There are some who dislike this sound but I find it very attractive, and of course it is the sound that Finzi surely heard in his mind's ear as he was writing these pieces.] The piece has colorful choral and organ writing that mirrors such words as 'Methinks I see Heaven's sparkling couriers fly.'
This is followed by 'Magnificat,' Op. 36 (Finzi's only American commission, written for the choirs of Smith and Amherst Colleges), a moving setting without the usual concluding 'Gloria', that begins with an exulting 'My soul doth magnify the Lord' and ends on the words 'for ever and ever' gradually dying away to the final 'Amen.'
'God is gone up' is the second of three sacred pieces in Opus 27. The other two are included (although not in consecutive order). They are 'My lovely one,' and 'Welcome sweet and sacred feast.' The latter is a setting of Henry Vaughan's poem celebrating the poet's redemption through religious conversion ('Dead was I, and deep in trouble'). It contains a meltingly beautiful passage on the words 'O rose of Sharon! O the Lily of the Valley!'
There are two part-songs for male voices, the a cappella 'Thou didst delight my eyes,' Op. 32, and one set to the famous passage from Ecclesiastes, 'Let us now praise famous men,' Op. 35. The latter, in two-part harmony, is notable for its Elgarian treading bass in the organ.
'Seven Unaccompanied Partsongs,' Op. 17, are set to texts by Robert Bridges. They are lyrical and tender and the part-writing is especially grateful to sing. The joyous 'My Spirit Sang All Day' is a particular favorite of small choirs. (For American readers/singers I will add that these songs remind me harmonically and in tone of those in Randall Thompson's 'Frostiana.')
The final and longest piece here is 'Lo, the Full, Final Sacrifice,' Op. 26, a 14-minute festival anthem set to Crashaw's elegant translation of Aquinas's 'Adoro te' and 'Lauda Sion.' It starts with a longish organ introduction and features a cappella and accompanied passages and short solos following the poetry's verse structure. There are some ecstatically lovely melodies, particularly at the words 'Jesu, Master, just and true' and at the final 'Amen.'
The singing here is impeccable and stylish. The recorded sound is all one could ask. Another triumph for St. John's, Cambridge, its conductor, Christopher Robinson, and for Naxos.
A hearty recommendation.

St John's English Choral Music series for Naxos (this Walton disc is No. 4) has won golden opinions (and an award or two), but there has been nothing better than this. With Christopher Robinson nearing the end of his reign in charge of this world-renowned choir, there could hardly be a better testament to his work. The likes of "Drop, drop slow tears" and "Set me as a seal" are standards for choirs up and down the land, but pieces such as the remarkable "The Twelve" and "Where does the uttered music go?" require a particular virtuosity, which is more than evident here. Space doesn't permit an extolling of all the virtues--in brief, a sound fresh, rich, and natural; ensemble and balance of voices immaculate; solo contributions impressive. Christopher Whitton's organ playing also impresses, not least in arrangements of the two ubiquitous movements from Walton's film music for Henry V. The acoustics of St John's is caught just right--neither too dry nor too swimmy. As a chorister himself, Walton knew the musical traditions of the Anglican church inside out. St John's et al. show here they know his music just as thoroughly. Rush out and buy. --Andrew Green

Great boy treble tradition resounds.......2007-01-30
Over time even traditionally great choirs vary in their excellence, so in recent years the choir of St. John's College Cambridge has a sound that is again at its apogee. Choirmaster Christopher Robinson (now, alas, recently retired from St. John's) has nurtured a choral brilliance that reminds me of the years when George Guest directed the choir. It is a delight to see that the great tradition of men and boys choirs still resounds in the Anglican Church (at least in many of England's 'Collegiate' and Cathedral choirs). St. John's is one of two ancient male voice chapel choirs at Cambridge University (the other being King's College Chapel Choir) in which the boy trebles are actually in a sense 'professionals'. Each college, in whose chapel they sing daily services, operates a nearby boarding school where the young singers--chosen for prodigious talents at strict competition-- take a high level of musical training, along with the regular school curriculum. The men's voices consist of young university students attending Cambridge on 'choral scholarships'. And for me the often heard debate regarding the merits of boy trebles versus girls (or women's) voices in church music is not moot when it comes to the Anglican musical and liturgical tradition. There is a kind of effortlessness and artlessness to the singing of the English choirboy, at this level of selection and training, that produces a wistful, often plaintive sound. It is a sound that seems most perfect for the Anglican liturgical repertoire. A female singer often seems to me likely to 'interpret' the note more, probably by virtue of natural instinct, and interject themselves more into the musical meaning of the piece. The boy treble 'tends' to have a natural emotional detachment in his singing which for me more profoundly expresses the ineffable nature of traditional Anglican music (if the expression of the ineffable is not a contradiction in terms:-). Anyway, for many all this is arcane opinion. But for lovers of this musical tradition it is its arcane nature that fills us with joy and wonderment.
Robinson saves the best for last........2002-07-14
I agree completely with the editorial review on this excellent disc; they never fail to impress. This is now the recording to have of Sir William Walton's choral music and the very tight and musical performances do justice to the composer's dramatic music. The acoustics of St. John's are the perfect atmosphere for Walton's music, much of which was composed for Christ Church Cahthedral Oxford, Britain's smallest cathedral. Many works such as 'The Twelve', with its many staccato effects and chamber music-like writing, would be out of place in a larger room. I don't remember from my visit to St. John's exactly what the acoustics are like, but I believe that the Naxos engineer did add some reverb, however it is never overdone. If I had one complaint about the disc it would be the organ playing, which is adequate for accompanying a choir, but isn't the most exciting for the transcribed solo works, luckily the organ is excellent. It is not that the playing is bad, it is just a let down after the excellent singing.
I would not let that stop the reader from buying it, as this choir is now the best men and boy's choir in the world, the conducting is excellent, and the music is uplifting.

Customer Reviews:
Bountiful talent in the thriftstore.......2006-04-10
Nothing thrifty about the major talent this new star brings to the tour-de-force album
"What about fulfilment?", sings Jason Whitton - and proceeds to deliver it right here in this ace album.
Altho' a strummer of sorts - and even more bizarre croaker of folksie songs - I'm not *that* wild about country music per se: most of what I hear seems to have done earlier and better by the giants atop whose shoulders these newcomers perch.
But this Whitton fellow has something special, starting with a siren voice that's an instrument in itself, incapable of an unmusical throb or vibrato.
It's showpieced best on Track 1's superb "Alibi" - almost defining the perfect country song - and I defy pulses not to quicken on that first kick-ass bass thump as JW winds sinuous tonsils round the chorus's "O-h-h, why-y-y? Don't give me that si-i-gh", ending with a velveteen murmured "Don't give me that alib-i-i". Listen, too, for the subtle rise on "the answer's be-hind our eyes" and again on the bridge's "you'll _ask_ me for forgiveness."
The great thing about Whitton's twangy voice is that it carries over the backing, of which 'Sunflower' is a good example where your deep-voiced singer would have disappeared into the backing.
Speaking of the bridge, listen closely for that amazing choral hum for bass backing.
Drums/Percussion: One takes backing musicans for granted until you hear it done really well. That Jon Mattox knows from country ballad drumming. He also seems a dab hand on the swelling organ sound ("Dandelion Girl") *and* on bass *and* on guitar (acoustic, 'lectric *and* 12-string) *and* on snare, the multi-talented creep.
In fact, the whole band is tight and talented and the production values are right up there.
Run don't walk to check it out and I bet you'll order it on the spot.
Love it, Love it, Love it!.......2006-03-15
I think I have said it all but in case you didn't catch it, I love this CD. I have NEVER been a fan of country music but this CD has just the right amount of alt pop to get me going. And as for the country aspect I have actually found an appreciation for the genre. Now that's great music when you actually change your mind about a style of music. I might even surf the country music channel to see if I can catch a glimpse of this guy.
Amazing!.......2006-03-08
This CD really was a surprise for me when I bought it after a recommendation from a friend. The opening track, "Alibi" is a bit of Michael Stipe mixed with some James Taylor vocalwise.
The third track, "Dallas," is my favorite. Nice country Texas Roots sound. I heard the song "Lucy" (Hungry Heart Cafe) on AOL Radio recently and saw this artist has a nice page setup at CMT. I sure he hopes he gets the recognition he deserves. Definitely worth the $$$....

SURE LIKE THIS CD. THE SOUNDS ARE SO DIFFERENT AND PLEASING TO THE EARS.

Very vocally futuristic! Cutting edge vocal styles matched with beautiful performers. The lyrics held so much meaning and were delivered with such refreshing purity. I can't wait for more from this duo.
Where have all the good songs gone? On this CD!.......2002-03-23
Is this country? pop? dance? I don't know, but I absolutley love it! If the success of music is determined by a distinguishable voice and a hook that grabs you and doesn't let go, then look for these ladies at the grammy's! The musical side is as melodic as anything I've ever heard and the vocal harmonies are breath taking. And if you want emotional lyrics just listen to "Little Eyes" and "Upon A Star"! Why doesn't popular radio know about this yet?
