Hick-Hop Hysteria

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Cowboy Troy was born and raised in Texas. Growing up to the tunes of Charlie Daniels and ZZ Top, as well as, Run-DMC, L.L. Cool J and others, CBT combined the different styles of music to make his own. Although he didn't invent "Hick-Hop" music he has definitely taken it to a different place.

Album Description

3 out of 5 stars A Bad Rap?.......2006-10-23

Cowboy Troy is the real deal...Just because some redneck crawled out of his double wide and proclaimed "this ain't country" is no reason to discount Troy's efforts. Despite Nashville's conspiracy to package vanilla wafer country, ocassionally true originals slip through and tell it how it is. Cowboy Troy is one of those originals.

CT has proven that there is a place for rap in country music in his cameo efforts with some big name acts. Perhaps his solo efforts haven't shown it yet, but some damn good musicians recognized his abilities and brought him on board.

CT has brought a new fresh face and sound to an inbred genre that sorely needs some fresh blood. Kidd Rock mixed it up and we didn't hear ya'll whinin' and bitchen about that. Hell, everyone in my family rides and ropes and we listen Ozzy! Go back to your trailer and have another Bud, it matches your taste in music...

There have always been people who criticize country music because of the "twang," but that is one of the things that make country music great, and why it appeals to a particular crowd, young and old, I myself being 21 and enjoy just about any country song, but this CD is not country, and it has no business even being associated within that genre. This whole "Hick-Hop" is a joke. Of course, if you happen to like Rap, this CD will appeal to you, but for the real "Cowboys" out there, this CD is a complete waste of time, and should not be considered country because there is a banjo or steel guitar in the background.

5 out of 5 stars New Wave Country Without Prejudice --- Go CBT & Big & RIch!!.......2005-04-15

I never really liked country too much. I mean, I like really old country like Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers, but I never liked the 90s country like Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, and crap like that. I also didn't like how country and the people that listened to it were and still are very stereotypical. Why cant you have a mixture and go wild if thats what you like. Cowboy Troy is a black guy who grew up country so why should he pretend to be a hip hop artist when he is a country guy that appreciates hip hop too. Why not blend it, and he does it well. I love how Big & Rich are all about not descriminating against anyone. I think Cowboy Troy brings great beats and great respect to Country music, breathing new life into Country, and giving it a modern feel without swearing that anybody can appreciate. The beats and the lyrics are very country, but his rap style fits perfectly with the country music. He is very cool, I cant stop listening to him or Big & Rich. I'm proud of what they are doing to country music, and I am proud to say that I am starting to like newer country music, not just old country music. But I'll never like 90s country. BLAH! I HATE STEREOTYPICAL COUNTRY CRAP!

5 out of 5 stars What is Country Music?.......2005-03-27

Cowboy Troy definitely funkifies the traditional "country" music, and I'm sure that he goes too far for some people's comfort. However, he definitely is carving out a place for himself within the industry, and belongs in country music.

In the late 80s and early 1990s, there was quite the discussion whether the "new country" music was in fact country enough. The stars looked and acted too mainstream, and country music was ~gasp~ crossing over far too often for the purists' liking. But, given a few years, the hoopla died down, and everybody today can appreciate the diversity within country music.

Todays new artists, like Cowboy Troy and Shooter Jennings, have listened to a wide variety of music and been influenced by it, just as we have been. Their sound and style reflects these influences, and are richer for it. Sure, it isn't the country music of yesteryear, but who's to say it isn't the country music of today or tomorrow?

Let's face it, the simple truth is that no one loves EVERY song played on the country station-- and that's fine. As for me, I enjoy Cowboy Troy's unique style and look forward to his next album, even as I wear out Hick Hop Hysteria.

Personally I enjoy Cowboy Troy, I've been following his career since his debut on the CMA's last year. I regularly watch "MuzikMafia TV" on CMT, he is a member of the cast of that show. People say he is not country...but in my opinion Country is a melting pot of all styles & opinions. I don't care what anyone else says...he is country in my book...end of story
