Album Description
"The Virtues of Simplicity - A Not-So-Simple Lesson"

Andy's music has been described as, "music for people who still BELIEVE in something." (Actually, Andy is writing this and finds it disconcerting to refer to himself in the 3rd person...)...and so I'm going to stop. Now where was I?...Ah, yes...information about my music and myself.

I was cofounder and one of the two songwriters for Ceramic Buddha, a Folkadelic Rock band that played throughout Los Angeles and Phoenix in the middle of the '90's. After we grew apart, I started work on my solo record which included guest musicians, drum loops, and sporadic inspiration. Originally envisioned as a 10-song offering, it decidedly became a 5-song EP with only one of those songs intended as just voice and acoustic guitar. When I went into the studio to record "Black-Eyed Clyde," I emerged and hour and forty-five minutes later with the album you're reading about now. What was never quite right in 4 years was suddenly perfect in just under two hours and it's called "Glimpse."

What these are, for the most part, are one-takes and all the songs are live, with no overdubbing. Now what could be simpler than that?...

While I am still trying to locate a copy of this CD for my personal collection, I have now heard a couple of tracks courtesy of KOPB public radio. The music, arrangements, and performances are simply stellar. Specifically, O Magnum Mysterium is a haunting piece that, while modern and making refreshing use of dissonance, is very approachable and enjoyable without being harsh. Superb material.

Pt. Radha Prasad is a senior disciple of world famous flutist Pt. Hariprasad Chaurasia. He is gifted and competent classical and light music performer. He has given numerous solo flute performances on All India Radio and National TV network in India and stage shows in Asia, Europe and U.S.A. The classical bamboo flute music of India is an ancient tradition of India. The bamboo flute has remained simple with few embellishments and is a wondrous instrument in the hands of a skillful musician. However it is difficult to obtain a good bamboo flute because there are very few qualified flute makers. For this reason, Radha Prasad himself makes professional quality bamboo flutes with great precision. Swapan Chaudhuri one of the world's greatest tabla players, celebrates his fiftieth birthday this year (1995). From Calcutta to Bombay, Delhi to Madras, India to America, England to Mexico, Canada to Nepal, Australia to the United Arab Emirates, in France, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia -- wherever North Indian Classical music is played -- he is in demand as a soloist and as an accompanist. Over the last decade, he has given an average of 200 concerts a year.

Rued Langgaard (1893-1952) was the odd duck of Danish music. He remained doggedly Romantic at a time when Romanticism was out, and he had his own funny little experiments with music that noboby particularly liked. We owe a debt to Chandos and Danacord for keeping Langgaard's music current. Music of the Spheres (1916-18) predates Gyorgy Ligeti by 50 years with its bright, pointillistic assertions and groups of ideas that evolve to their own inner logic. As demonstrated in Tonebilleder (Four Tone Pictures), Langgaard's music has an openness that allows his tone clusters to expand, contract, or simply repeat (as Ligeti would do much later). Discover Langgaard. --Paul Cook

5 out of 5 stars A work of awesome proportions and intimate emotion.......2006-12-11

This Chandos disc containing two pieces by Danish composer Rued Langgaard is one of the most pleasant surprises this fan of modern-classical music has come across. Langgaard (1893-1952) was an outsider and eccentric in Danish music life, a virtuoso organist who succeeded only in his late forties at getting a position, and a composer of wild tales of the Antichrist coming into the world who found it almost impossible to get his music played. In the late 1960s, his music was rediscovered by scholars and his importance in Danish musical history is now certain, but he is still little-known in the modern-classical scene. We should be grateful to the Danish National Radio Symphony Orchestra & Choir and Gennady Rozhdestvensky for their performance and to Chandos for releasing the recording.

"Music of the Spheres" for soprano, chorus, orchestra, and distant orchestra (1916-1918) is stunning. The innovations here are considerable: exploiting the performance space in the use of two orchestras, writing for an "open" piano where glissandi are produced directly on the strings, and of course the clusters and polyphonic webs, massive and seemingly motionless blocks of sound reminiscent of Gyorgy Ligeti. Indeed, the Hungarian composer exclaimed that he was a Langaard imitator when Per Norgard showed him a copy of the score in 1968. But the purity of the string writing reminds me of Alexander Knaifel, and the massive proportions of the orchestral writing at its loudest is somewhat like Sandstroem's "The High Mass".

But, as is often said, it wouldn't matter how much Langgaard were ahead of his time in "Music of the Spheres" if the music wasn't great. And it is, one of the most moving half-hours of orchestral music I'm acquainted with. Langgaard was a Romantic in a time when Romanticism was out of fashion, and the proportions of what the listener may recognize as struggle, momentary defeat, and victory are just as powerful as in Mahler.

"Music of the Spheres" is an exceptional piece in Langgaard's total output. The "Four Tone Pictures" for soprano and orchestra are somewhat more typical of his art. Written on poems by J. Blicher-Clausen, Ivan Turgeniev, and Holger Drachmann, they are fairly tame lieder. These suggest that the modern-classical fan can pass on most of Langgaard's music, but "Music of the Spheres" is so good that at least this disc should be in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most extraordinary works ever written.......2003-11-21

Music of the Spheres, by the eccentric Danish composer Rued Langgaard, really is the work that has everything. Written between 1916 and 1918, it uses a multitude of techniques that would not be rediscovered until after the wars. Multifarious tone clusters, floating micropolyphony, a piano played directly on the strings, an entire offstage orchestra, blurred choral singing, prefigurations of minimalism: you name it, this work has it. Yet it also has Scriabinesque ecstasy, Straussian opulence and a wacked-out religious subtext in which Christ and Antichrist clash in the violent climax to the whole work.

None of this would matter, though, if the music weren't any good. But it is good--probably the best thing Langgaard ever wrote (so far I've heard about 30 of his works, and none of them matches this one). The various short episodes flow one into another with perfect clarity and logic, the orchestration is superlative, and the dramatic writing at the climax is sonically overwhelming. Fortunately, Chandos match this work with a tremendous performance by the Danish National Radio Symphony and Choir, conducted by that indefatigable servant of underperformed music, Gennady Rozhdestvensky. This recording should be considered the best currently available, and it outstrips the rivals with ease.

Any other work isn't likely to fare so well in comparison to this, but the Four Tone Pictures are by no means eclipsed. Opulent songs in a Straussian harmonic language--though lacking the German composer's gift for melody--they are the perfect way to come down from the musical high of Music of the Spheres.

5 out of 5 stars Music to Amaze Your Ears.......2003-07-23

Rued Langgaard was the man that time forgot. Completely neglected in his native Denmark because he did not fall within the prevailing neo-classic aesthetic set by Nielsen, Langgaard was rediscovered in the 60s when Per Norgard gave a score of Music of the Spheres to Gyorg Ligeti at a competition and after a minute Ligeti announced, "it seems as though I am a Langgaard imitator." Though Langgaard was essentially a conservative late romantic composer, he was capable of some real moments of innovation. He not only presaged Ligeti's color style, but also elements of minimalism, most especially in his string quartets.

Music of the Spheres is Langgaard at his most original. This work is a stunning series of small tone pictures. From the very beginning of the work, with the shimmering cluster of string harmonies over ominous timpani, through out the work, experiment reigns. Langgaard is always tonal, but in this work shows a fascination with orchestral sound and tonal clusters that was probably about 50 years ahead of the times. And yet, in the middle of the work there are sections that could come directly from Schonberg's early Gurrelieder or even the symphonies of Gade. It is a truly astonishing aural sound feast and should be a staple of the repertoire.

The accompanying Tone Pictures, four tone poems on nature themes, are also quite beautiful, though much more conventional as music. Here is Langgaard the Romantic and he is quite a good Romantic actually. The orchestrations are lush, the harmony sensuous and there is just enough oddness to mark the work as Langgaard's and no one else's.

This Chandos disc is exemplary in sound and the performance by Rozhdestvensky is definitive I think. Even if you are afraid of unusual or experimental work, this is a disc that you can take to your heart. It is stunning and beautiful and has my highest recommendation.

Variety, innovation, sound of the world. All of these and much more can be found on Glimpse. Trilok plays hard. So do the musicians invited for this session. Use of variety of acoustic instruments gives true natural feeling as opposed to many nowadays' programmed-drum recordings. You travel through a number of places, each constructed to the last detail. Enjoyable though not so easy understandable recording from the true master of percussion.

5 out of 5 stars Trilok Gurtu - The Glimpse.......2003-03-15

This is a mind boggling array of music I would rate this easily amongst the top 5 CD's in my collection (of about 500 CD's at this point in time). Trilok plays drums like no one I've ever heard (or seen). He makes the percussion a lead instrument that adds another dimension to this music. I can't recommend this album enough.

        5 out of 5 stars Trilok's Tasty Treats.......2001-01-21

This is acoustic music at it's finest, cookin' throughtout. Simmering grooves to burning blasts, this is the real meal, tasty as the best Shakti or Oregon. The compositions of Gurtu and pianist Andy Ember are superb, full of space and movement. Especially awesome are the chant and wordless vocal arrangements, integral to the progression of the music, not just melodically and harmonically, but often rhythmically as well. There is a breathing, building,(definative?), cover of Ornette Coleman's Law Years, that can only be described as perfect. The excellent acoustic bass work of Lars Danielson must be acknowledged, as well as the angular, yet propulsive trumpet of Paolu Fresu and the masterful guitar and gnaoua of Jay Deva. To quote from the tone pome contained in The Glimpse:"The Music was flowing Deeply in his Soul"... Trilok is one of our finest musicians and composers and The Glimpse is a must-have masterpiece . Yes, we all realize that Farmakon takes some of Opeth's style and uses it as their own. But there's absolutely no way you can call them a flat-out Opeth rip-off.

The fact is, what Opeth does wrong (which you could count on one hand), Farmakon does right. Their songs aren't incredibly long, so they are generally straight to the point. And they also seem to be on the more extreme sides of the spectrum than Opeth. The growling is much more sharp than Akerfeldt's, and the clean singing hits higher notes. The same goes for the other instruments, when it's hard, it's hard, and when it's soft it's really jazzy.

Overall, not a bad start. I'll be looking forward to their next release, especially to see how they evolve in their sound.

        4 out of 5 stars A great start for a talented band.......2004-10-13

I saw people compared this band to opeth. These guys are their own band and to say they are just like another band is riduculous. They have their own sound and the vocalist in particular has a great range. It's a good album, but buy it for Farmakon and don't go in expecting another bands sound. Enjoy!

        5 out of 5 stars Incredible Debut.......2004-06-21

Its hard to say what 2003 was the year of. Music saw the evolution of screamo and hardcore, with Ozzfest 2003 only furthering the trendiness of outfits such as Killswitch Engage and Atreyu, with more and more acts just like them on the way, spawning just as fast as hair metal did in the 80s. However, an original band named Farmakon came through with their Earache Records debut that went unnoticed by the masses, but resonates to the listener quickly that this band is going to be along for a long time.

I confess, i am an Opeth fan, so the immediate similarities made me quite pleased with my random pickup of this disc last December. I dont think i knew though that i was going to come to love this band and be excited for them the same way as i am toward my musical idols. Farmakon has not necessarily breeded a new style of melodic death/jazz influenced metal, they have moreso advanced its evolution towards the forefront of the musical world, with fans like me hoping one day many young and confused people may turn to the chilling and enchanting rhythms and the hellacious Opethian growls to find personal joy. Sure, i am a dreamer, but give not me, rather Farmakon, their moment in the sun.

Track 8 on this disc "Pearl of My Suffering" stands out as an instant gem, easily a canidate for best new song in the year 2003. This song bends the line between death and jazz in ways that can only be touched by the legendary Swedes.

I am eagerly awaiting for the followup to "A Warm Glimpse" to see what evolution Farmakon will offer the metal world. If the evolution is staged as Opeth's was, the next few albums will only continue to amaze fans of the genre.

Finally, to those who call this band "Opeth wannabes" this is merely showing the inspiration on progressive death metal music that Opeth has delivered. And so you dont seem so shocked, Farmakon's singer has a favorite album...Opeth's "Still Life."

        Need i say more?

5 out of 5 stars An Exceptional Debut.......2003-12-27

Ok so its quirky progressive melodic death metal with elements of jazz (in the vein of Ephel Duath, though a bit less experimental). And the vocals include black and death growls, clear vocals similar to Serj Tankian and some King Diamond. Top notch production and musicmanship, and amazingly fluid songwriting.
But what really makes them stand out is their quirkiness. I mean, there have been bands that have done what they are doing and better, but all of them deal with depressing or serious or abstract themes, which makes hearing songs like 'Loosely of Amoebas' and 'Wallgarden' a guilty pleasure.
All the songs are pretty solid but...
OK, I'll say it. This is a total ripoff of Opeth.
That said I enjoyed this better that Opeth's Deliverance, so maybe you'll like it too.

This is an excellent recording of a talented string quartet performing Sarah Stanton's original compositions. Although these tunes are classical in nature, they do not follow typical classical chord progressions. Just when you think you know where the arrangement is going, the music flows in a different direction. Very interesting works and well worth the price.
