Stupid, Stupid, Stupid

Editorial Reviews
People
[O]n Stupid [band leader Shaun] Ryder and the boys justify their popularity by delivering a deliriously wacky montage of big, hip-hop beats and idiotic dance-party chants ("underpants/Foster Grants") that owes stylistic depths to the Mothers of Invention, the Beastie Boys and Chumbawamba.... [I]t's a delightful insult to the sense of humor of sophmores everywhere. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Album Description
The second album, originally issued in 1997, by Shaun Ryder's post-Happy Mondays band. Ten tracks including the singles 'Get Higher' & 'Squeaky'. Radioactive. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

4 out of 5 stars very good, even better things to come.......2007-07-16

This is one of the "transitional" albums between the psychedelic PT and the current PT sound, which I don't think can be easily categorized, besides calling it, rock, with metal, acoustic, and electronica elements.
I want to call the attention of potential buyers of the double disc special edition. The second disc has a 5.1 mix and a high resolution stereo mix that can only be played with a dvd-a capable player. Only the dvd-video portion (Piano Lessons video, and some pictures) can be played on regular dvd players. When I finally get around buying a dvd-a capable player, this will be one of the first dvd's to spin.

5 out of 5 stars Porcupine Tree ..What can you say????.......2007-07-02

Someone told me to download some porcupine tree and "I DID". Now this is a band (and I say as a conasewer of good"efing" music and with-out-a-dout the music "thats takes ya back!! Don't try to analyze it just listen....Maybe you have to comsume sum schrooms!, Their music no matter what cd you buy tells you they're exceptional musicans, perhaps the lyrics aren't that full, but what is?! ..."IS".......Great Group!!! Should always be remember!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-06-20

I have about six PT albums, and this one is the best of them, very highly recommended for prog fans.

5 out of 5 stars NOT Stupid , Actually!.......2007-05-30

This impressive re-master of Stupid Dream once again finds Steven Wilson to be the Master of 5.1 surround sound mixing. The stereo remaster is fabulous in itself, but the music comes alive on the 5.1 DTS disc! You will find plenty to like here from fantastic song structure to virtuoso playing of All instruments by the stellar musicians that are "the Tree". If you enjoy this, like anyone couldn't, then I recommend the DTS 5.1 In Absentia and Deadwing discs as well. Neither comes with the companion CD for the car, but so what! They both will blow you away. For fans of PT, Pink Floyd, Rush, Tool, Etc. In Absentia (Dts)

5 out of 5 stars Not so stupid...but UNREAL.......2007-05-07

This CD is one of their best...I have either heard or have all of PT's stuff, and have heard all of their 'stages' of development'. All are great, from the early spacey to the latest heavy stuff - but this one seems to have 'caught' them in their stage of transition to making more streamlined stuff, but no sacrificing their roots, selling out, or none of that s**t...it is just plain beautiful bloody poetry. The only one to date that comes close is 'In Absentia', which is unreal in and of itself.

This band is taking music to the next stratosphere, so join in and check out this now-remastered and re-released masterpiece from one of England's gems...you WILL get hooked! This is seminal stuff that any music lover will eat up in a second.

You may wonder what the heck to PT sound like...well, think Tool meets Pink Floyd, touch of Dream Theater and Spocks Beard, some Yes and Genesis, well maybe even some spacey bands I don't even know of, and some other stuff I can't put my finger on...but their sound is unforgettable...

What we're getting here is what we've come to expect from this talented songstress: pop arrangements of literate songs that deal with knotty relationships involving lovers, critics, and corporations. Mann co-wrote a song with Elvis Costello for the final 'Til Tuesday album, and it was an apt pairing. Like Costello at his best, Aimee is equal parts adroit and direct. A couplet like "I came back twice, now I'm the Anti-Christ" or "A thousand compromises don't add up to a single win" may be accompanied by something a little more to the point--"Don't you know you're a fucking freak in this world?" Mann and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Brion keep the songs pithy and punchy, bringing on guests like Juliana Hatfield (on the particularly intoxicating "You Could Make a Killing"), Suede alumni Bernard Butler, Michael Penn, Chris Difford, and Glenn Tilbrook for occasional adornment, but mostly maintain a hands-on approach. The result frequently recalls Abby Road-period Beatles, which isn't a bad source. --Steven Stolder

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars best aimee album.......2007-01-10

I consider this the best album of Aimee, each song is a story by itself, it is a masterwork; Long shot, Ray, That's just what you are and Amateur are my favorite..... I love this album...!!!

5 out of 5 stars Worth buying........2007-01-04

With her strong emphasis on voice and unique lyrics, Aimee Mann's songs of depression and dysfunction are enough to brighten anyone's day. More upbeat and active than Mann's usual work-but with downers like Ray and Par for the Course mixed in-this album shows just how varied one singer can be. The long conclusions of a few songs can be a bit distracting, but it doesn't take away from her strong voice. An overall treat for any Aimee fan.

5 out of 5 stars Irresistible.......2006-11-25

I was lucky enough to have worked on this record and it remains one of my favorites to date. The earnestness with which Aimee approaches her songwriting coupled with the nuanced and colorful touches by Jon Brion combined to give us a fantastic record full of tender sarcasm and pithy cynicism....it expresses a part of Aimee's quirky and intelligent self beautifully. I love this record and if you like music that makes you feel and think then yhou might too...'Amateur' is one of the most elegant and touching pop balladds ever.

5 out of 5 stars My favourite album of all time.......2006-06-13

1. Longshot - 9/10 - Aimee Mann MUST have personally written this one for my ex boyfriend
2. Choice in the Matter - 10/10 - "Skip the cloak and dagger bit, don't you know we're sick of it?" haha
3. Sugarcoated - 10/10 - definitely the best song on this album. Anyone can relate to this song.
4. Could Make A Killing - 10/10 - this is the song that made me go out and buy the album in the first place
5. Superball - 11/10 - All I can say is 'WOW'
6. Amateur- 10/10 - I cried so many times over this song
7. All Over Now -10/10- Yet another one dedicated to my ex and I liked the superball reference at the end
8. Par For The Course - 8/10 - An okay favourite song
9. You're With Stupid Now - 9.5/10 - such a sad song
10. That's Just What You Are - 10/10 - Words never rang so true
11. Frankenstein - 11/10 - Great great lyrics
12. Ray - 7/10 - My least favourite song
13. It's Not Safe - A long but well done song

another mann masterpiece also delayed from the idiots that be behind the record labels.
they didn't hear that "hit single for the radio", and shelved
this cd. however, it saw the light of day 2 yes. later.
the whole album is mann's horrible experience with producing
and making a record with dumbasses behind the hit factory.
excellent songs, great songwriting style. the song
"amateur" is in the gwyneth paltrow film,"sliding doors"

5 out of 5 stars A more tolerable commute.......2007-05-27

Ron White is hilarious; a great story teller. I commute in miserable traffic to Wash., DC and I need safe distractions. This is safe until I start cracking up. I can also listen to the cd a few times in a row and it just doesn't get old. If you appreciate "good old boy" humor, this one's for you. Very, very funny.

5 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-01-11

I love Ron White so obviously I would rate his CD high. It's great to listen to with friends or on a long car ride. Definitely not something you want children listening to because of the language and content.

5 out of 5 stars You Can't Fix Stupid.......2007-01-10

Ron White is always good, but this one stands out as an example of his sharp mind and cutting wit.

1 out of 5 stars Yes you can!!.......2006-11-20

You can fix it, stupid!! Stop drinking and smoking for one!! This proves that Hillbillies will laugh at anything. Listen to SMART comedy, peo-ple! Like Woody or baron Cohen!!

2 out of 5 stars Almost pornographic.......2006-08-14

I am a huge Ron White fan, so I hate to give it a low score - but this CD just seemed to me like he sunk to a new level. Almost every track on this CD is a crotch joke and/or relates to sex, and where I am definately not a prud - I felt a little sleazy for listening to it. I was very disappointed. I highly recommend his previous CD "Drunk In Public" instead.

A handful of contemporary movies have whimsically looked back at the '80s. Various bands have borrowed from the time period's musical trends with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. But Weird Al was busy sending up that decade while it was still happening. On Dare to Be Stupid, Yankovic parodies, among other things, smash hits by two reigning divas of yore. "Like A Surgeon" turns Madonna's song into an inexperienced doctor's first-person account of his, uh, practice. Weird Al's version of a certain Cyndi Lauper hit proclaims, "Girls Just Want to Have Lunch." In this loony world, the object of desire in "I Want a New Drug" is transformed into a duck. On "Yoda," Yankovic targets the Kinks' early '70s hit, "Lola." Who else but Weird Al would turn a song about sexual identity and confusion into a tune about George Lucas's "wrinkled and green" creature? --Fred Cisterna

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dare To Be Entertained.......2007-07-03

"Dare To Be Stupid" is classic "Weird" Al. It has pop favorites "Like A Surgeon" and "Girls Just Want To Have Lunch," but Al shows his genius with "Dare to be Stupid," "Yoda," and the tremendously creative "One More Minute." This is a CD that every "Weird" Al Yankovic fan should have.

5 out of 5 stars If you only want one Weird Al CD then this is the one to get.......2007-05-13

Many people -including me - consider "Dare To Be Stupid" to be Weird Al's best work to date (as of 2007).

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars for the five songs i've heard.......2007-01-14

I only have heard five songs here we go

Like A Surgeon had me laughing hard.

Dare To Be Stupid is very peculiar.

Yoda is good and catchy.

One More Minute is a good slow song.

This Is The Life is a 50's song.

4 out of 5 stars More of "Weird Al"'s parodies and spoofs.......2006-09-07

"Weird Al" Yankovic is still fulfilling his contract with Scotti Brothers, the CBS-owned company that controls his independent Rock And Roll Records label. This 1985 release,I found far better than Al's previous two albums. Being a longtime Madonna fan,I love LIKE A SURGEON which tells about an erroneous surgeon who's "a disgrace to the AMA(American Medical Association),cause my patients die before they can pay." Madonna has a cameo in the video. She's sitting in a hospital filing her fingernails. The title track,a Yankovic original,is a spoof of Devo.
Those who love Huey Lewis & The News' I WANT A NEW DRUG will also love I WANT A NEW DUCK. ONE MORE MINUTE is another Yankovic original done in the style of Sha-Na-Na. Oldies-but-goodies fans will sure love that one. YODA is a tribute to the Star Wars character with Ray Davies' music to his band The Kinks' recording LOLA. GEORGE OF THE JUNGLE is just a cover of the theme from the classic cartoon show. Other Yankovic originals include SLIME CREATURES FROM OUTER SPACE,THIS IS THE LIFE(the theme from the 1984 Michael Keaton film JOHNNY DANGEROUSLY), and CABLE TV. Another one of Al's food parodies is GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE LUNCH with music from Cyndi Lauper's hit recording GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN. HOOKED ON POLKAS is a sequel to IN 3-D's POLKAS ON 45 featuring a medley of covers of non-satirical hit songs. HOP contains WHAT'S LOVE GOT TO DO WITH IT?,STATE OF SHOCK,FOOTLOOSE,METAL HEALTH,OWNER OF A LONELY HEART and others.

5 out of 5 stars HAHAHAHAHAHA.......2006-08-31

I'm still recovering from my laffing. "Here's a waver, for you to sian" "Or stick my nosterls toghether with Krasy Glue" "They got hands all covered with fungus, they got eyes like some kind of bug, I shure hope they don't come in here, I just sampooed the rug!" and other lines crack me like an egg. "Slime Crechers from Outer Space" is my faverit and "Girls Just Want to have Lunch" is great, but "This is the Life" well bad. If you don't crack up to this al-bum you are very stupid

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Pink .......2007-04-10

I am writing this as a kid even though I am an adult only because this site does not enable me to comment on this single as an adult easily. This single is the best single of the whole world of the last thirty six years. The only shortcoming of the single "Stupid Girls" is the fact that red haired girls are not referred to in it. Red haired girls are no less stupid than blonde girls, and sometimes red haired girls are even more stupid than blonde girls.

5 out of 5 stars It's about time someone told it like it was .......2006-05-25

I heard and read much about the hype and (gasp!) "controversy" surrounding Pink's "Stupid Girls" but it wasn't until I watched the video on cable a few times and just listened to the lyrics that I fully grasped the meaning of what Pink was conveying here and all I have to say is leave it to a hometown girl (well, I'm from the city not the suburbs) to tell it like it is regarding how the female sex acts and is viewed nowadays.

Pink is asking women (especially teenagers who, I believe, suffer from serious esteem and image issues) why we sell ourselves short time and again? (LOVED the part where she asked where the first woman president of the US is - dancing next to 50 Cent in a rap video. Dig it!)

I loved her parodies of the crop of the empty-headed who are constantly shoved down the public' throats as being the be all and end all of femininity (Paris and her sex tapes, Nicole and her skeletal-chic look, Jessica the dignified doing a glorified striptease - all bubbled up - on top of a car, Lindsay and her {former} emaciated self, etc).

I don't believe the aforementioned are bad people but I would love to know why they sell themselves short by acting like glorified prostitutes (for that easy million or two)? They make the money and it's average teenagers across this country who get stuck having to live up to unreal images time and again (such requirements never apply to males of any age group, though). And all that nonsense about that "that's what the people want" or that "sex sells" got *real* tiresome ages ago.

I'm not into current music but Pink's "Stupid Girls" was a (pleasant) exception for me. It's a very poignant message. - Donna Di Giacomo

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2006-05-03

To be honest, I have never listened to or owned a PINK CD.

WOW! what an incredible Album! Great lyrics and intelligence. The tracks are really thoughtful and provocative.

AMAZING!

Now my fav. album.

Thanks PINK. You go girl!

5 out of 5 stars Pink at her best........2006-04-08

Finally someone who dares to tell all those skinny people what they really should hear. When will they realize that skinny is not nice to see? And check the video, you'll love it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing single but the true gem is Heartbreaker.......2006-04-02

Stupid Girls is a fun upbeat track making fun of Hollywood Girls and the video is hilarious. The true gem on this single is Heartbreaker. The song showcases Pink's amazing voice and range over great lyrics and great music. Too bad this song is not on the album. Heartbreaker is worth the price of the single alone.

3 out of 5 stars Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.......2007-07-19

I hate to just repeat what everybody else sez, but this is one of the all-time dumb records. Everything about it is dumb, from the name of the group to the way the group looks to the cover art to (especially) the music. That don't mean it's bad, though.

Sometimes you're just in the mood for dumb.

I first heard of these guys when they showed one of their videos on Beavis & Butthead. The video made me laugh out loud even without B&B's comments. They had one goofy looking guy in the band that was wearing something like a ballet costume and another with a Stetson hat and cheap looking halloween make-up. The shots of the band playing was intercut with clips of skateboard idiots suffering violent mishaps while trying to jump down staircases, etc. After seeing the video, I had to go out and buy the record.

It isn't really very good, but it's the kind of record you put on when you have people over and you want to get them to say "what the h-ll is that?"

Would I recommend it? Yeah, for special occasions. It's loud and fast and that makes up for a lot.

5 out of 5 stars Front man Phil Owen Has New band out!.......2006-05-12

First off this album rocks, and i think i still have the original on tape somewhere. I recomend this album to anyone who a fan of Ministry, Revolting Cocks, or Industral in general. Now I just seen Minisrty/RevCo in concert tonight and SkateNigs front man Phil Owen, who is also on the new RevCo album and touring with them, has a new album out. Its called "Snow Black - The Suggestion of Power". Finally we have a follow up album to the SkateNigs - Stupid People Shouldn't Breed. Its pretty underground but everone here has got to find it, you wont be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Good dirty fun.......2005-06-09

Like the previous reviewers pointed out, this is one of those albums that don't pretend to be more than they are: good, simple and no-braining fun. This wacky band clearly refuses to sit on a high horse, as the stupid, inane and zany lyrics demonstrate (just take a look at the album title...no need for further proof). Good for us. Music doesn't need to be intellectual all the time. So leave all the symbols, metaphores and deep meanings aside and enjoy this piece of nice industrial hard rock. Ministry and White Zombie fans should call it a treat.

NOTE: to whom it may concern, story is that Ministry's Al Jourgensen actually produced this record. He just didn't want his name to appear on the album credits because he and Skatenigs main man Phil Owen got into some fight after the album was released.

5 out of 5 stars Full Speed Ahead!.......2005-04-19

After reading the other reviews, I had to add mine: I acquired this album when the frat-boy drug dealers in the apartment next door "moved out" suddenly in the middle of the night. The building management wasn't aware they were gone, and the whole complex looted the apartment. By the time my daughter told me what was going on, all that was left was a blender and some CD's. I had never heard of Skatenigs, but this album instantly became the theme to my daily carpool ride to work.

I'm now 44, and I still love it. It's just B@!!$ to the Wall, full-out "I'm fed up with this crap, and I'm not gonna take it, but by god, I'm gonna sound cool while I'm at it!" raging metal.

I'm also someone who listens to all kinds of music, and this album is in my all time Top Ten. It's THE best for venting pent-up aggravation, and the songs are much more "hooky" than you would expect.

Heck, just the album title alone is worth the purchase!

4 out of 5 stars Ah the Memories.......2004-07-18

Stole it from a friend, then a year later he stole it back. Fair play and all that. Finally bought the album on CD and it is part of my travelling 24. For all instances? No, but when I need something like Skatenigs, why not play the original? Still remember the first time I heard the CD, climbing the three flights of stairs to math class. Only other experience comparable was first hearing the first song on Clutch: Transnational Speedway League, also on the stairs leading up to math class. Anyway, just ordered What a Mangled Web We Leave and would definately recomend this to anyone who wants to be aurally kicked upside the head.

4 out of 5 stars Better than you might think.......2006-11-25

I can understand why so many people rated this album low. After the absolutely incredible "It's Great When You're Straight, Yeah" debut of Shawn Ryder and crew (which should be in anyone's collection of top 10 alternative albums of the '90s), this one might have been a bit of a disappointment.

Initially, it was for me. But then I had to remind myself of what I was comparing it to, which was not only the previous album, but the entire Happy Mondays anthology. Quite a tall order for any group to fulfill, and I'm not surprised they couldn't hold up to it.

That being said, this is a pretty darned good album, all in all. There are some particularly outstanding tracks, notably the opener, "Get Higher," the funky "Lonely" and the sole hit of the album, the gradually endearing "Marbles." No, it's not the best album you've ever heard. But in my opinion, it's better than a lot of people are giving it credit for, and certainly better than a lot of the other crap that came out in the 90s...

Amazing - nothing like it anywhere - If you like your music neat and pressed, forget about this album, otherwise, check out the schizoid party fun sound -

What the pro's say:

[...]

5 out of 5 stars A work of genius...surprisingly!.......2001-11-09

You only need to look at the careers of Robbie Williams and Terry Hall to know that the most talented members of a group don't always become the most successful solo artists. In the first year since the Beatles split, while John and Paul looked away for a moment, Ringo had had two U.S. Number ones! Which brings us to Shaun Ryder. Seemingly a wrecked druggie, just the vocalist of the Happy Mondays, he has proved to have a rare talent for lyric, combined with catchy aggressive melodies reminiscent of Ian Dury's best work. He also has some measure of charm, however you may disapprove, you can't help but like him. It's Great When You're Straight was a good album, but this one is even better. Every song shouts out of your speakers and makes you want to dance, sing, or fight. The additional vocals of both Bez and Kermit help to get that laddish feel just right, whilst some of the rapping adds a dancefloor authenticity where it's needed. All of the tracks are great, and the album is one that can be listened to again and again, but the standouts are the openers 'Get Higher' and 'Marbles', and 'Dadi Waz A Badi'. Be prepared for some bad language, and if you can, get hold of the copy with the wibbly eyes on the front cover!

3 out of 5 stars An older and wiser Shaun Ryder........2001-10-31

Shaun Ryder's second Black Grape album finds the familiar elements present and correct - the compulsively repetitive funk groove, the sparks of choppy guitar, the pointed use of samples (including a hilarious imprimatur from President Reagan), the broad-minded use of unexpected instruments and musical styles (Stax, baggy, Stones, ragga, soundtracks etc.), the inspired verbal jumble with which Ryder articulates his narco-leptic world view.

But whereas in 'Reverand Black Grape' (and the Happy Mondays' greatest albums), these fragments collided to addictive effect, the bolshy messiness the essence of the music's appeal, a pumping up of the Sly Stone template, 'Stupid' is worryingly mature, tidy, even respectable. Few of the songs are particularly memorable, but many evoke the dread ghosts of U2 ('Lonely' is a dead ringer for 'Angel of Harlem'; others recall the Mondays-'inspired' album 'Pop') or Van Morrison. This may do something for you, but is anathema to me.

4 out of 5 stars SSS Guide.......2001-07-21

Get higher-This sounds like something linkin park would do.It is good to headbang to.

Squeaky-This song is also like hard rock.Sounds like that one about fathers on their other album.

Marbles-Sigh.THIS should also be classed as metal.

Dadi waz a badi-This is my favorite song by black grape. It's got decent rhythm.

Rubberband-You can tell this is a weird song just by the name (And the album cover.)

Spotlight-This song ain't cheesy though.But it's catchy.

Tell me something-Are rage against the machine on this CD?No,it's just Shaun Rhyder revealing his metal.

Money back guaranteed-The problem with this song is that he uses his words too hard.

Lonely-A mournful song. That's all I really have to say about this song.

Words-This is just a rip-off of that song by the doors.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary Pink.......2007-04-16

I am not a kid but I have a difficulty writing a comment as an adult on this site even though I am an adult. Pink is the true preserver of the Pop culture, and specifically, of American culture of the last thirty six years. That preservation is expressed through the correct fact that blonde girls are stupid. It is just a shame that red haired girls who are another category of stupid girls are not referred to in the single. If they had been rteferred to in this single, this single would have been much richer. The additions to the album version on this disc make the idea of the album version deeper and more beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars P!Nk Rox!!!.......2006-05-30

p!nk rox u need to get this cd
D-Bop 3 A.M. at Crash - very electro tinged i like it!
Jr. Vasquez & Dynamix - it's very long (But i like long songs) beware not edited, not that i'm complaining, it repeats alot, my mom thinks it gets annoying I DISAGREE it rox and is one of the best (Hani's is good too)
Noize Trip - sound R&B it's awesome though, it's a little short though (well 2 seconds shorter than the original
Video - seen it a million times!
EP - 5/5 stars

5 out of 5 stars I Love Remixes!!!.......2006-05-27

All of these remixes rock (i wish it came with the 'Hani Mix' the 'Kardinal Beats Remix' and 'Heartbreaker' (i already have 'Heartbreaker' but low quility) and if u liked any one of these remixes then might i recomend 'God Is a DJ (Remixes) - EP', the 'Last To Know - EP' or the 'Who Knew Pt.2 - Single' though i hear that the 'Sharp Boys Jonathan Harvey Love Mix' and the 'Bimbo Jone's Radio Edit' aren't very good, I give this cd a 5/5.
P!nk rox!!! (also check out her new album 'I'm Not Dead', but if u get that u've got to get the UK Import version (it's got bonus tracks)

5 out of 5 stars Junior Vasquez and Dynamix club mix is da bomb.......2006-04-26

The Junior Vasquez & Dynamix club mix is freakin' hot. It's a dance club mix clocking over 8 minutes. This is an edgy, housey, progressive, circuitry dance mix. This club mix is a universal song meaning it will play at all dance clubs gay or straight, not just gay clubs. Be warned, there's alot of the F word repeated throughout the dubbing of the song, especially the intro buildup in the beginning. a 100 times better than the album boring version. Of course i heard that the Hani club mix of Pink's Stupid Girls is the best mix but it isn't on this import single. But this Junior Vasquez mix will do.

4 out of 5 stars Err...hmmm.......2006-04-20

In reality, the 4 star rating is more for the original than for anything else.

When you have a song as socially poignant as this one, it's hard to remix it while keeping the life that it has on it's own. So when I listened to the remixes, I tried my best to be impartial and also to remember that I was listening to them casually in the comfort of my own home, and not in the club where they should be heard.

The D-Bop At Crash Mix is an electro-tinged deep mix that sort of cuts up the vocals a bit. It's alright, toned down with none of the energy in any of the right places. I'm not a fan of this mix.

Junior and Dynamix's Club Mix is definitely going to be the one that gets all the attention, but it really drains any life out of the song that it had originally. It will be great to dance to, but the words mean nothing, and are just something the boys can recognize while waving their hands in the air. Perhaps I am being too harsh, because I am judging it against one of the best club mixes I have heard in a long, long time: The Johnny Vicious remix of Natasha Bedingfield's "Unwritten". But again, all dance, no soul.

The Noize Trip mix is the r&b mix of the song, actually catering more to the song than to those who will be listening. As mixes go, it suits the song better, but it still can't hold a candle to the original.

And if you don't know the original by now, pull your head out of the ground, you silly ostrich!

After four years out to pasture, the Ass Ponys re-emerge with a new album and label, but with the same ol' down-home, indie-angled rock that fans have come to expect. Some Stupid with a Flare Gun--this Cincinnati-based band's fifth album in 11 years--doesn't stray far from its predecessors, relying heavily on the Ass Ponys' particular brand of tongue-in-cheek twang, especially on the tracks "Pretty As You Please" and "Magnus." However, they do dare stylistic departures; "X-tra Nipple" bubbles with Ramones-like verve.

The album, whose title is a reference to Deep Purple's "Smoke on the Water," brims with morbid, nostalgic ballads, peculiarly wrought characters, and religious imagery. Strong--and often lush--musical performances by Bill Alletzhauser, Randy Cheek, and Dave Morrison make Some Stupid pure aural joy; Chuck Cleaver's gritty and sweet vocals and lyrical magic keep you from getting too comfortable. Judging by the yarns Cleaver spins, one might believe that his childhood bedtime stories were written by Flannery O'Connor. --Cintra Pollack

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An album that actually made me cry..........2006-03-24

I paid over fifty dollars for this cd on ebay...yes I know that I could have gotten it cheaper. At the time, next to the Tragically Hip, AssPonys were my favorite band. I was already well versed in "Electric Rock Music", having bought it years ago, and "Known Universe", having been pleasently surprised years after the fact. I got so into "Known Universe", that the Ponys became my favorite band. If you toil life away in a small town, like I've done the majority of my 28 years; then this will quickly become the soundtrack that allows you to say, "hey, I'm here: are you there?"
Chuck Cleaver is a lyrical genius, in the fact that he has the ability to communicate such powerful emotions using the simplest language available. And while art has taken a downturn the last several years;(personally, I blame Britney Spears) listening to any AssPonys album is always a treasure.
For me, this is their most personal album, and when I hear people whispering their secrets; I want to know the story behing them...
This album opens with "As Pretty AS You Please", an alt-country ditty that's just as shocking as any Johnny Cash song ever produced. They move on, through their obvious single "Astronaut" to a muddied middle of the album that you NEED to be a fan of the band's to digest. Then, with "Swallow You Down", the Pony's seem like they are trying to make it work...
And they do; with "Casper..." and "Kitten"...these songs are filled with such pangs of loss, that you cannot listen to them and not be affected.
I have tried my damnest, corresponding with all the insiders to understand these two songs...but I haven't gotten a decent answer yet.
And I don't want to pry any farther...
Why buy AssPonys?
Because you're moved by something that struck you, specifically, as being so beautiful and so amazing that it captured your rapt attention.
And when I heard "Kitten". it seemed like the leader singer (Chuck Cleaver) was singing to a daughter that died. It actually made me cry...
I'm a big, tattoo'd guy. I shouldn't be crying...

5 out of 5 stars Best Underground Band.......2002-05-20

This is one of the greatest underground bands around. Although they do not really care if they become "famous" they are in the business for the one true reason of music, to make and perform it for the enjoyment of others. The albums they make are well rehearsed and produced and very professional. The music they make is truly alternitive, not this mainstream stuff passed off. If you like this album check out Electric Rock Music with their only hit Little Bastard. These guys are great! Enjoy and get 'em while you can. You won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Four years is too long!.......2000-07-31

Can you believe that its been four years since their last offering? This is by far their best album. It edges out their classic Electric Rock Music, sadly out of print. This one hits home harder. It's like that book by Sherwood Anderson...Winesburg, Ohio. There all of these interesting characters and stories coming from and inspired by living in a small rural midwestern town. The songs are better this time, even the instrumental one is great. This time the characters are a little stranger, creepier , darker , funnier, & a little too familiar, they hit home and draw you into their world. Chuck can sing well, and that's an understatement. He's got this voice with a high lonesome tone to it. It can break your hear and make you laugh a little too...perfect. The band is very capable with a strapping guitarist. Let's hope the next one isn't four years away. Best rock album of the year...in my humble opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Far and away the best from the Ponys.......2000-06-20

After a lengthy hiatus the Ass Ponys are back and better than ever. The quirky, haunting lyrics of the dark underbelly of the heartland are still here, but are now matched with somewhat more accessible melodies. The Ponys inject some of the pop sensibility that catapaulted "Little Bastard" onto the national radio scene into many of the outstanding tracks from this effort. "Astronaut" and "Swallow You Down" are surefire singles if they ever get any radio play.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs.......2000-04-25

Spooky, emotional, sometimes funny stuff. "Your Amazing Life" is gorgeous, and "Astronaut" should be on the radio. This is a fine album that should be heard.
