Selector Dub Narcotics

In the early '80s, Calvin Johnson, the charming singer from Olympia, Washington's faux-naïf, folk-punk group Beat Happening started K, his own record label. Within a few years, K grew into a loose distribution system. The incipient International Pop Underground influenced thousands of bright-eyed garage acts--Nirvana and Beck among 'em. By the 1990s Beat Happening disbanded, and Johnson formed a loose-knit neo-primitivist dub-funk-punk combo, the Dub Narcotic Sound System, and a studio patterned after funky Jamaican studios, Dub Narcotic Studio. Selector Dub Narcotic presents 23 previously unreleased tracks recorded at the studio in the last few years, including Versus, Jon Spencer, Beck, and Nikki McClure. Tunes range from loose, organ-driven hip-hop to party funk, sensuous fake-soul, affected fake-gospel punk rock, and lovely, minimalist Cherry Red-ish pop. --Mike McGonigal --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

...Calvin Johnson has wooed many a player into that enchanting studio of his. Being a savvy producer, he kept all the tapes, knowing that some day, a one-off Beck track would be of value, or an impromptu Blues Explosion recording would beef up a collection of less marketable strays. With 23 tunes, and only a couple duds among ‘em, Jon so proves himself a studio man of high integrity and a music patron of good taste. --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

2 out of 5 stars I do get it and am going to sell it back.......2002-11-19

I approached this sampler with an open mind, listened to the first few songs with an open mind, and soon started skipping through the tracks for something I might like. My assessment is that there isn't anything great on the album and much of it is kind of boring. One song about a quarter through with Calvin J on vocals was pretty good and there were a couple others, but mostly I wasn't happy with the CD.

5 out of 5 stars I DO get it and you should too........1999-06-21

Contrary to some belief, Selector Dub Narcotic was just what true fans of the K record groups wanted. This album has a litte bit of every kind of music that the Dub Narcotic Studios and K Records can bring to it's loyal and new fans alike. It is truly a great sampler and a great addition to any collection. Enjoy

1 out of 5 stars I DON'T GET IT!!!.......1998-08-25

Forgive me. I heard all the hype, so I was eager to hear this comp. I'm not familiar with DNSS live shows, but the concept sounds highly entertaining.

I do appreciate some seriously bad music, but I truly don't get this. I don't feel this at all. Like fake acid.

I feel jipped. If I was less diplomatic I would say this is one of the suckiest CDs I've ever heard. However I probably don't get it. I get the feeling this is some in joke, or that I had to be there.

I dig the Make Up, Blues Explosian etc. I believe my problem is with Dub Narcotic. There are plenty of psuedo funky joke bands out there. So I guess I will have to look else where.

I don't mean to be cruel.... but Bloodhound Gang, and Insane Clown Posse are funnier.

I'm really glad I listened to this CD before I bought it. I would certainly be less diplomatic if I bought this CD.
