On The Horizon

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
A trio of musicians with very diverse backgrounds whose musical sense has helped them attain a connection between several musical styles. This version of the band has been together since late 1995 and has evolved into unique sounding group. Abandoning the musical trends of the time the band is focused on music that is not bounded by classifications. Who's in, who's out, what's hot , what's not are concepts unknown to the Ziffelz. Their music is HOT no matter who or what is "popular". BAND_MEMBERS: Urbain Bernier - Lead/Rhythm Guitar , Vocal
Wayne Small - Bassist, Acoutic Guitar, Vocal
Marc Bradley - Drums, Percussion

Album Description
A collection of original music from America's heartland. Combining heart stirring ballads, soulful blues, and grinding rock this CD explores rock's roots with a modern feel and unique sound. Each track successfully evokes emotion in the listener and just like some of rock's most memorable songs, leaves an indelible impression in the listener's psyche. A fresh new sound whose roots are in the past but like it's predecessors, are timeless.

    Album Description

Holiday blues comin' on? Well, put a spike in `em! Here's the zaniest, wildest and just plain sickest Collectors' Choice Music exclusive yet—79 tracks from Spike Jones and his City Slickers! These represent Spike's complete Standard Transcription sides, but these tunes are anything but standard; Mr. Jones brought his full bag of tricks for these non-commercial recordings (made in Hollywood during the early `40s). Add to that the fact that most of these have never been on CD or even LP, and any lover of Spike's mayhem-filled mixture of laughs and hot licks is going to flip over this set! Notes and great pictures accompany this 3-CD walk on the wacky side from the greatest novelty band of all time.

5 out of 5 stars Great set of wartime rarities.......2003-05-14

Spike Jones was the king of the novelty song performers, with hits like "Der Fuehrer's Face" and the parody version of "Sheik of Araby" becoming huge hits during World War II. This is a swell 3-CD set, gathering a full eighty-one of Jones' best tracks from his 1940s heyday, drawn from an extensive archive of radio broadcasts made for the Standard Transcription service. The tightness of his City Slickers band is amply demonstrated in these manic, kookily orchestrated performances. Toots, squonks, blatts and bleats whiz by at lightning speed, as one daffy song after another will delight devoted fans. Amazingly, Jones had the unusual, almost unique ability to perform a repertoire almost entirely made up of comedic material, and yet still be quite listenable and engaging. His jazz chops were hardly in question, and from time to time Jones would dash off a non-novelty ballad or two, just to give the rubes something to think about. Of course, just as often he would perform a song that *sounded* like a straight ballad, but would turn out to be another goof. (One great example of this is the sultry "Serenade To A Jerk," sung in slinky, burlesque tones by Myrtle Horwin.) This collection may seem a little overwhelming, but like his studio recordings, these radio performances have a certain brilliance and joie de vivre about them that will leave you enchanted. Definitely worth checking out!

This collection has remastered material from the large stack of Standard Transcription discs from the early 1940's. There are many songs not recorded on RCA, many on the theme of wartime ("48 Reasons Why"), and the quality is excellent. The packaging is threadbare but this is an essential CD package for true music lovers.

    1 out of 5 stars disappointing.........2007-02-06

recently received this cd. already have "everything you are" and enjoyed that disc very much. unfortunately this is a complete change of town. very religious sounding songs, reminded me of the band "jars of clay"

certainly a different direction for the band, one that lost my interest.

    5 out of 5 stars A gift..........2006-03-16

I have been a huge fan of Vertical Horizon for close to 6 years now, and I don't understand why anyone could be disappointed with this album. I hate it when people say "I was hoping it would be more like Everything you Want and Go". This album is their sophmore album and it came out long before "Everything You Want" and "Go". If I'm not mistaken this album along with their debut, and third album, where all re-released a few years after they origionally came out. I have owned this album for six years now and I think it's wonderful. This album portrays Vertical Horizon before they hit mainstream with their albums: "Everything You Want" and "GO" I personally prefer their first 3 albums over "Everything You Want" and "GO" This album is all acoustic work. All the tracks on this album are great. I highly recommend:
    Track 1: Heart in Hand
    Track 2: Wash Away
    Track 3: Fragments
Track 5: The Man Who Would be Santa
    Track 6: Angel Without Wings
    Track 11: Sunrays and Saturdays
    Track 13: Falling Down
Track 14: Goodnight My Friend. This song is my favorite on this CD. A few moments after this track is a secret track. It features a blended mix of songs on this album. It's amazing.
I also recommend that if you enjoy this CD and their first, "There and Back Again", you listen to their third album "Live Stages" if you haven't already. It's a live performance of songs from their two previous albums and its great. Running on Ice is truly a remarkable gift to Vertical Horizon fans.

5 out of 5 stars For All the acoustic guitar enthusiasts.......2005-09-28

if you love James Taylor, you will definately LOVE this. Vertical Horizon is totally different than what they used to be. Everything before "Everything You Want" are all classics. Their Live Stages cd is amazing. if you really want to experience a friggen good live concert, listen to that. Don't expect to hear the same stuff from EYW and Go, this music is raw and shows their true talent

    5 out of 5 stars Emotionally Stirring.......2005-02-17

This Cd is amazing. It is more relaxed than Vertical Horion's newer Cds. When I listen to it, the singers drive home their purpose, and each word cuts right to you. ESPECIALLY in Wash Away. I love that song, and I am in love with Keith Kane's voice. This CD was at first just another addition to my Vertical Horizon collection (which is growing by the day) but now I am sure I will never be so obsessed with a band.

    2 out of 5 stars disappointed.......2004-07-27

If you expect this CD to sound like Everything You Want or Go, you will be disappointed. It's more of a folk music sound and not at all what I had hoped for.

5 out of 5 stars just listen... mmmkay!??!.......2006-12-15

The first song is ab-fab and Billy M.'s vocals run up and down your spine with a chorus that will make you want to hit "REPEAT" over and over and over again. But... Who cares? The album starts off with an amazing peice, and then, this short little gem of an album, finishes soft and sweet. Kind of like, well... I am not exactly sure, but, it does. And it is, good/.
Look, I can be some one you can trust if your looking for something new, or maybe you'd like to hear something other than "cookie-cutter".

      Album Description

"The Window" is one of the most talked about SACD's on the web. Recognized by industry audiophiles as a landmark achievement, its songwriting was voted Honorable Mention in the 2004 Billboard World Music Contest ("Freedom on the Freeway") and its surround mixes were part of the final nominations at the 2003 Surround Music Awards in Beverly Hills. Hybrid SACD plays on any CD player, Walkman, etc.

According to the Sony SACD Project team, 'The Window' is the very first hybrid multichannel SACD to be released by an independent (unsigned) arist anywhere in the world. Rave reviews at SA-CD.net, HighFidelityReview.com AudioAsylum forum and elsewhere on the net confirm the wide appeal of this recording.

...then get a SACD player and this SACD. Every time I queue it up in my 5 disc changer/player, even if I start doing something else in the interim, I stop and sit and smile for at least a song or two when this one comes up. David's voice and acoustic guitar, the supporting musicians, the clarity of the recording, the overall production of the album are second to none. Many, if not most, other SACD recordings are mixed into the SACD format either after being recorded before DSD/SACD format was invented or after being recorded on the more typical/standard studio equipment; a true DSD recording, such as this one, is still a rarity. If you're an acoustic music fan this one is a must have.

An excellent CD from an excellent human being! I bought this CD in December at a show I saw him at and was not disappointed at all. Dallman has a very unique voice that is full of character... it has an almost Irish feel to it but without going overboard. The disc a collection of acoustic based folk/light rock songs that never get heavy and never grow tiresome due to the excellent hooks and melodies that Dallman crafts. If you get the chance to purchase or see him, please do so, you wont regret it! To be honest with you, I don't listen to this genre of music to often so I'm not sure as to whom I should compare him to... so just go to www.myspace.com/christopherdallman and listen for youself.

2 out of 5 stars extremely poor re-mastering.......2004-12-21

I listen to many (re-mastered) historical recordings. Jeanette MacDonald is certainly one of my most favorite sopranos. For some reason, I haven't been able to find a decent, or even acceptable, re-mastering of her recordings.

While this one certainly contains many valuable tracks, the re-mastering is horrid. The songs sound stripped yet still maintain a great deal of distracting noise. I conjecture that the re-mastering was done simply by increasing the bass and decreasing the treble.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent CD!.......2004-03-29

This is an excellent collection of the Screen Sweethearts of the 30's, Nelson Eddy and Jeanette MacDonald, *not* singing together, in the 40's (except for a few of Jeanette's songs).

For Jeanette, it has numbers from Up In Central Park: Carousel in the Park, It Doesn't Cost You Anything to Dream, Close as Pages in a Book, Fireman's Bride, The Big Back Yard, When You Walk in the Room. She and Robert Merrill sing these together and on their own, and very charmingly, too. There are also Love Me Tonight, Isn't It Romantic, and Beyond the Blue Horizon.

For Nelson, he sings music from The Student Prince with Rise Stevens: Golden Days, Drinking Song, Deep in my Heart Dear, Serenade (which is BEAUTIFUL!), Just We Two, and Come Boys. He also sings all the songs from Northwest Outpost - thankfully, without Ilona Massey! Also, the Willie the Whale segment from Make Mine Music is on this CD - just as it is in the movie, with the narration and everything - it's great! (The Tristan und Isolde part is not included, however - not sure what the reasoning is behind that.) He also sings a duet with Jane Powell - Why Do I Love You? from Show Boat.

I say this is a must for fans of Nelson and/or Jeanette, not to mention Rise Stevens!

I particularly enjoy "When You Walk in the Room". It's a charming little tune, with ridiculous but adorable lyrics! "Fireman's Bride" is very funny also - Jeanette barely sounds like herself!

I hope this will help others to choose this CD - it's a pity there's not a list of the titles here!

4 out of 5 stars Nelson Eddy on CD - always a pleasure.......1998-08-30

It's always a pleasure to find Nelson Eddy's wonderful voice on CD and this one has some of the harder-to-find pieces in it, including collaborations with Jane Powell and the wonderful mezzo Rise Stevens. The recording of "The Whale Who Sang at the Met" is a must for any collector as are the excellent recordings (better than on the movie) for "Northwest Outpost". The baritone singing opposite Jeanette MacDonald also has an excellent voice (though his name temporarily escapes me)

5 out of 5 stars GREAT RECORDING, BUT THE PRICE..........1999-12-01

This is 20th century opera at its most vivid. Once considered a failure, Osud was resurrected in an English translation that actually improves upon the original libretto. The music is as vital as anything in Janacek: the piece starts a churning riff strangely reminiscent of Philip Glass; the ending is equally memorable -- startlingly brusque and humorous. Throughout, we get musical drama tied to the quick of spoken language; conversations overlap, or suddenly fall silent. At times the story is ridiculous, but the production rides over any problems. Philip Langridge, as always, is great. My only qualm: this was originally a single disc CD on EMI, for a single disc price. Though the package is nice, the price is steep for some 70:00 odd minutes.
