3 out of 5 stars Not exactly an album review, but..........2005-12-29

I originally borrowed this CD from a friend of mine a few years back, and then in the process of on-line searches found that 3rd Strike had broken up. I felt shocked and was amused at the same time. I skipped the vast majority of the songs, only because they covered a song that, in the metal and hard rock community at least, is considered a timeless classic: Black Sabbath's Paranoid (originally intended as an album filler on the Paranoid LP which grew into a behemoth). It was interesting to hear their interpretation, because they made it their own. 3rd Strike added their own style, and a bridge section instead of a solo (such a sad trend in the nu-metal genre, removing guitar solos) which actually fit the context of the song itself. If Paranoid were the only song on the album then full stars would be awarded.

The rest of the album was decent when I actually listened to it, but "Paranoid" was what really made this album stand out to me.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CD!!.......2005-09-17

This band has to be one of the best bands ever. It's just to bad that they no longer exist. Their music is so good. The tune and everythin is great. I would recomend people to buy this cd as its their only one. Im sure when you listen to it you will be a fan.

5 out of 5 stars broke up?.......2005-02-20

I love this CD. From start to finish, it has nothing but buttwhoopinraprockrockrap music. The only thing I found negative was the 4 letter words. I had to censor my daughter from a few GREAT SONGS!...grrr

If this band has broken up, then thats a dumbass move IMHO.. someone screwed up the workings of a great band. It truly is rare when you hear a band with talent like this.

5 out of 5 stars R.I.P. 3rd Strike.......2005-02-16

3rd Strike was a band like no other. They played a style of rap metal that is not a rip-off of lesser groups like Kid Rock and Limp Bizkit (they suck). 3rd Strike was more emotional with their music, sort of how Ill Nino, Flaw and Unloco can be. If you hate "nu-metal" (Why hate it? Just because you hate Korn and Slipknot doesn't mean they're poser.), you will not like this. However, this is another advance for the short lived genre. "No Light" is a very emotional song that got the group going. "Redemption", the other single, refrains from the rap lyrics and shows how "nu-metal" isn't just something you should just despise of (unless you don't listen to mellower music, which I listen to sometimes). Many places sell this CD used for only about 2 dollars, but this isn't a waste. Listen to this if you want to break away from bands like System Of A Down or Slipknot for a while. (I have nothing against them.)

5 out of 5 stars unfortunate loss of such a good band.......2004-10-15

I was disappointed to hear that 3rd Strike broke up. I heard about three months ago or so. I've loved this band ever since I first heard them. I saw their video for "Redemption" and I absolutely loved the song. The songs are all high quality and easy to sing to. I introduced one of my friends to them and they are now his favorite band. I recommend buying it. After all, it is their ONLY CD. Good for fans of Flaw, Unloco, and possibly Ill Nino.

Joel Cohen spent countless days in the library at the Shaker community at Sabbathday Lake, Maine, transcribing dozens of tunes from among thousands of archived chants and spirituals. Many more of these wonderful tunes were recalled from memory by the community's few resident Shakers--and Cohen and his ensemble, joined by several Shaker singers, made this recording, which deserves to be heard by everyone who loves songs and singing. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Shaken *and* stirred.......2007-04-28

My interest in seeking Shaker music was professional - I wanted something to use for my church choir's next big performance. What I found in this collection of Shaker music was that, but much more.

Without their music, the Shakers can seem quaint and faintly silly - the odd maiden aunts and uncles with peculiar hobbies (making chairs and living without modern conveniences) and -- nutty bears, indeed! -- living in celibate, and therefore non-regenerative communities.

But their music is something else --earnest, longing, full of commitment and a sense of their own story. And tuneful! You don't have to be a Shaker to appreciate the visual poetry of "Virgins cloth'd in a clean white garment," or hear the deep commitment to resist sin in "I will fight, fight, and never slack until I overcome the enemy," or the desperate longing for eternal life evoked by "In yonder valley there flows sweet union." These are songs written for and performed by people who lived a most austere form of spirituality.

There are those who criticize Joel Cohen for having embellished some pieces by adding, for instance, a drone that is not attested in the literature. By I certainly praise Cohen and the Boston Camarata for having brought these wonderful pieces to my attention. It is icing on the cake that a few of the remaining Shakers of the Sabbathday Lake, Maine community chose to join their voices to this effort. To sing is to pray twice, and this CD certainly delivers on that promise, plus providing insights into an obscure but enduring corner of the American religious landscape.

4 out of 5 stars And then there were four..........2006-10-25

Only four Shakers remain and Sabbathday Lake in Maine houses them all. They range in age from 43 to 80. Given this, without fresh converts the Shakers face extinction. Barred by law from adopting orphans (since 1960, religious groups cannot adopt, only individuals or couples can), the twentieth century saw a steep decline in their numbers. Thanks to religious revivals, back in the nineteenth century their numbers swelled to over 5,000. But by 1920 a mere dozen remained. Though the small community hopes, and continually prays, for new recruits - which must come in the form of consenting adults - their values clash with modern America. Which was, of course, the original point. The largest hurdle for membership: total celibacy. No procreation, nothing. And, as we all know, twenty-first century American culture is anything but celibate.

Shakers remain not only celibate, but ascetic. Though not to the level of the Amish or the Luddites. Sabbathday Lake has a website, a car, telephones, and internet connections. They also don't hermit themselves from society. They play an active role in it. So throw away any notions of Puritanical witch hunters. Shakers laugh, socialize, read, dance, and, as this CD aptly demonstrates, they sing their ascetic hearts out.

The music, largely resembling English folk music, rhapsodizes about Shaker values, history, and vows. All songs but one get performed a capella. Some emphasize the lyrics with stomping and clapping. Permeating the set is the figure of "Mother," or Ann Lee. She helped found the Shakers in the eighteenth century and all faithful remain her spiritual heir (after Jesus Christ, of course). Early followers faced persecution, but found faith in Mother's actions and example. The song, titled appropriately, "Mother" retells the story of the "blessed fire" that spread from Manchester, England to America. Believers also reaffirm their faith and actions by singing songs in Meeting. An apt beginning, the CDs first song presents an ecstatic chant that reminds members of their ominous vow: "Come life, Shaker life, Come life eternal, Shake, shake out of me all that is carnal." "Followers of the Lamb" repeats the lines "I'm glad I am a Shaker" three times in celebration. Some songs don't have words and get half hummed half sung with mystical sounds. Shakers also express anger. "A companion stiff" fiercely pounds away individualistic thoughts in favor of community. The beautiful and upbeat "Encouragement" combines non-word singing with strongly contrasting fervent stomping and clapping. Somehow it encapsulates both meditative contemplation and heart-racing ecstasy in only two and a half minutes. Aptly bookending the CD is the most famous Shaker song, "Simple gifts." Instantly recognizable, Aaron Copland popularized this tune in his 1950 ballet "Appalachian Spring." Here it receives a sparse but inspired choral performance. As such, it aptly closes the CD with a message of faith and simplicity.

This CD, recorded at Sabbathday Lake, preserves a sampling of the thousands of Shaker songs known to exist. To this day these songs still fill the Shaker's 1794 Meeting House, the last one still in use. But how much longer? In the end, whether or not the Shakers can survive their current troubles, they will always remain an important piece of American and religious history. Not that that provides much consolation. Either way, this recording helps to preserve an important aspect of the Shaker's cultural contribution: their impressive music.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful album .......2005-09-17

This is a gorgeous album of melodies so strong and simple that you could build bridges on them.
The issue of the theology is irrelevent unless you believe that differences in the theology expressed--which may be different from yours--will interfere with your pleasure in the music. I can easily imagine topics that, no matter how beautifully expressed, I would be unable to listen to. It wasn't the case with this CD.

(You would also be upset if you believe that (a) listening to others express their beliefs, which are different form yours, is a sin, (b) your faith will be swayed by listening to gorgeous music from people who disagree with you, or (c) it's wrong for people with different beliefs to have their music recorded. I doubt very much that any of the people who have expressed theological concerns about this CD would feel that way but, hey, people who do feel that way should be given appropriate warning).

4 out of 5 stars Shaker Music -- misunderstood?.......2005-01-27

I read the reviews of this CD and feel some people are not understanding the lyrics. One cautioned that Shakers refer to God as "she." At first, I thought the same thing; however, after carefully listening to the music many times, I truly believe that when they refer to "she", they are solely referring to Mother Ann, the founder of their religion, whom they obviously adored and admired. This music is haunting and well-performed and should NOT be a "turn-off" to any Christian who chooses to listen.

5 out of 5 stars Some new old ideas.......2000-10-14

I am a big fan of early American music, and Joel Cohen and the Boston Camerata really know how to do it. I found this album musically refreshing as well as spiritually refreshing. As a minister of music, I appreciate the sensitivity the Camerata brings to its interpretation of these traditional Shaker hymns. I also love hearing music by singers (specifially the Shakers themselves) who are not afraid to limit their understanding of who God is -- infinite and varied in nature, not subject to human limitations such as gender. There is a great freedom in this music which some listeners who are tired of the rigid confines of modern theology will appreciate. My only ambivalence is with the pieces on which the Shaker community takes a leading role. On the one hand, I think this is brilliant and enriching. On a purely auditory level, though, their untrained sound is a little distracting. Decide for yourself when you purchase this delightful album!

5 out of 5 stars This CD will make you believe in music.......2005-02-04

I picked up this CD on a whim in the early 90's as a last minute purchase added to other CDs I was buying. I've been a fan since the early 80's & they never cease to amaze me. Although this is now an older CD I believe it is one of the King's Singers best. I'd put it right up there with Madrigal History Tour & Good Vibrations. This saucy sextet delivers the goods time & time again with perfect diction, phrasing & pitch. Take a listen & just lose yourself in the harmonys, you won't regret it.

I can have many chances to meet Albums the king's singers have performed. This 'Believe in Music' is not one of their best albums, but THE BEST of all their albums. I dont need to explain about this album with long and boring words. Just say "The Best"!.

Album Description

It's harvest time for Jimmy Ryan. Planted twenty years ago in the fertile soil of the Boston roots scene and watered with the rich, muddy water of bluegrass, punk and Americana, Jimmy Ryan's first solo record `Lost Diamond Angel' is a rich harvest indeed.

At the root of the record is Jimmy's mandolin. His propulsive playing has graced records by everyone from Morphine to Warren Zevon to Catie Curtis to Melissa Ferrick. Here, on his own record, it insinuates rather than dominates, creating an entirely new setting for a mandolin playing frontman. While his mandolin influences range from Bill Monroe to Jethro Burns, this is no retro roots record. This is mandolin playing for a new generation.

It was Ry Cooder's mandolin part on the Rolling Stone's `Love In Vain' that first piqued Jimmy's interest in the mandolin. Bringing to it his love of Bob Marley, Thelonious Monk and the Clash sealed his distinctive style.

In 1987 he formed The Blood Oranges, a seminal Boston roots band that, over the course of three records, played with The Tom Tom Club, Los Lobos, and Kathy Mattea, were praised by Rolling Stone magazine, and built up a huge following on the roots/Americana scene. Jimmy also formed, with John McGann, The Beacon Hillbillies, mixing jazz and bluegrass and releasing three CD's. Since 1996 Jimmy has played with Catie Curtis while writing and gathering material for `Lost Diamond Angel'.

It's on `Lost Diamond Angel' that all the pieces fall into place. Enlisting a stellar cast of supporting players including Billy Conway (Morphine), Andrew Mazzone (Catie Curtis), Duke Levine (Mary Chapin Carpenter), Dana Colley (Morphine), and Catie Curtis, Jimmy lets his influences and experiences inform and color 13 songs of startling depth and originality.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Music From A Pale Brother.......2003-05-28

This debut album from Jimmy Ryan is excellent.

How did a college kid from North Carolina become the fan of a mandolin player from Boston? It wasn't seeing him play at a club - that happened a few years later, when he toured with Orchestra Morphine. I discovered Jimmy Ryan when I heard his haunting and beautiful mandolin playing on the Morphine song "In Spite Of Me".

This album, dedicated to Sandman, almost made me forget about the fine Brothers, Pale. I'm not an expert on "Roots" or bluegrass music, so the only thing I can really say with any authority is...I liked the music. The slower and sadder numbers, such as "Happy Couple" and "John Brown", are genuine and heartfelt, while the more upbeat songs like "Drunker's Lament #7 or 8" inspire your feet and hips to move.

5 out of 5 stars You won't be sorry!.......2002-12-19

I discovered Jimmy Ryan via Catie Curtis, and I'm so glad that he finally released a solo album. Don't let the mandolin fool you... "Lost Diamond Angel" rocks, though it has roots-y elements as well. Take a chance, you won't regret it!

      Album Description

The charismatic mezzo-soprano, Jean Stilwell, is one of Canada's most versatile artists - one who has that rare ability to light up any stage on which she performs. In addition to her extensive recital, concert and operatic performances, Stilwell has also garnered rave reviews for her smoldering approach to cabaret music, including the songs of William Bolcom and Benjamin Britten, Kurt Weill and Arnold Schoenberg, to those made famous by Edith Piaf, Marlene Dietrich, Zara Leander and Lotte Lenya. Her recording of French mélodies and cabaret, Les Chemins de l'amour, was heralded by the press, making the late Toronto music critic Urjo Kareda's list of the "Best Recordings of the Year 1999".

5 out of 5 stars what an elegance!.......2006-01-18

This recording is great. Picture a platoon of Kosachs on horses preparing for battle. Ofcourse ther are other romantic isles in this symphonie. Part two I think can make one fall asleep. Der Toteninsel i think is fantastic. It is not positif, but the state of mind is perfectly drawn. Five stars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Band With An Awesome Sound.......2002-01-20

Lost Angel is one of those unheard bands who deserve more support for their music. This band has a sound all their own and that is important in a time when most music begins to sound the same. They have their own sound that is refreshing to hear. If you like a harder edge sound to your music then Lost Angel is a must have for your CD collection. I would have to say that this is one of the best bands that you have never heard. I highly recomend this band to everyone.
