Arrival Lounge

Editorial Reviews
XLR8R
Indeed beautiful. Shades of Fender Rhodes, Moog and Farfisa envelop the listener in their lush warmth...truly wonderful melodies.

Milk Factory
Unusual sounds and bleeps assembled around more recognizable sounds, organised into low-key constructions... compositionshave a definite cinematic twist .

5 out of 5 stars Arrival Lounge trips the light fantastic.......2003-09-03

Excellent CD from Sonogram on Simulacra Records. The vibe of the CD is upbeat, with flowing electronic beeps contrasted at times with techno/dance flavors, various percussive elements all topped off with a sense of joy.

The CD is great for relaxing, hanging out, reading, or simply pure listening. It's a joy to buy a CD where all the tracks are great. Some of the downbeats remind me of stuff Trevor Horn did for Seal on Seal 1 and Seal 2.

Stand-out tracks include Arrival Lounge, hovering the velodrome, Pixel Dust, Portal, and Aeronaut.

Go buy this now!! Hurry, do it so you can take a trip to the Arrival Lounge

5 out of 5 stars Jazzy Beat for Oldies.......2007-05-06

Years ago I had an album of Quartette Tres Bien which featured mostly oldies (big band type) that were given a jazzy treatment. Very mellow and enjoyable. Wish I could find more of their music. The Sergio Mendes music was a definite bonus.

    5 out of 5 stars Classic 60's lounge music.......2006-08-04

If you enjoy "lounge" music, instrumental with a twist of Latin...you definitely will enjoy this. People either like it or don't, I listened to the samples...great music, throw-back to a much simpler time, terrific for dinner parties or just relaxing.

    3 out of 5 stars Unfamiliar bedfellows.......2001-05-01

This CD holds two albums that are related only by the fact that the leader is a pianist and they were both put out by Atlantic in the mid '60s.I own both LPs, and they have totally different sounds. If you like heavily produced, band- or orchestra-backed piano, you might like Sergio Mendes on this. The arrangement for each song depends on which of the three producers did the track. Some are reasonably gutsy, others mushy, in the style of the day. Mendes's playing is as solid as ever, although a lot is the one-finger-melody style. "Great Arrival" is nothing like "Swinger from Rio" or "Beat of Brazil" which are both (IMHO) far superior. It also has no relation to Brasil 66. Quartette Tres Bien is a piano trio plus a bongo and conga player. The extra rhythm gives the quartet some extra snap and Jeter Thompson (the pianist) has a lot going. Be aware that unlike Mendes, QTB is not playing samba-style music. More of a bop-with-rhythm sound. So, an odd combination on the CD, but you might like it if you have diverse tastes or if you're a big piano fan.

4 out of 5 stars Nice orchestrated piano album.......2001-01-24

THE GREAT ARRIVAL was Sergio's first U.S. recording with a large group, and remains one of his best. The twelve tracks are divided amongst three fine arrangers: Bob Florence, who contributes four punchy big-Latin-band powerhouses; Clare Fischer, who utilizes his usual distinctive woodwind voicings; and Richard Hazard, whose uncommonly beautiful charts for strings and flutes provide soft haunting moments in contrast to Florence's energy.

Mendes' pianistic improvisation is rarely heard in better form, and it is mixed well with the other musicians' playing; his keyboard drifts in and out of the larger arrangements in a very dreamy sort of way. Sergio is capable of blending in with an orchestra very well, but when he takes a solo, he is capable of burning up the ivories in a Bud Powell-inspired way. Richard Hazard's fluid tracks showcase the former specialty; Bob Florence's driving "Nana" is a good example of the latter.

And as on all of Sergio's early albums, the repertoire is drawn from the choicest of sources. Sergio's team harvests the work of Jobim, Moacir Santos, and of course Edu Lobo in Brazil; plus Bacharach, Neal Hefti, and James Van Heusen in the States. Arranger Clare Fischer also contributes two of his own compositions: "Morning" (on which Sergio plays a bit of harpsichord) and "Carnaval."

THE GREAT ARRIVAL isn't exactly earth-shaking -- Mendes' skill and aplomb at the piano is indeed clearer on his prior (small group) Brasil '65 and Bossa Rio recordings. But this album does serve up a very tasty mixture of three different approaches to Brazilian arranging, all tied together by Sergio's unmistakable ivory-tickling. In short, a pleasure to listen to.
