At the time of this album, Jamiroquai's second, Britain's soul-funk-acid jazz scene had been firmly established by numerous club DJs and bands like Soul II Soul, Brand New Heavies, Incognito, and Young Disciples. Jamiroquai formed their own voice with strong songwriting, tight ensemble playing, and--most of all--Jay Kay's fluid vocals, which are impressively reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's. As the band's main songwriter, Kay addresses social ills ("Just Another Story," "Manifest Destiny"), advocates enlightenment ("Stillness in Time," "Light Years"), and leads his multiculti band through love songs both bubble-gum funky ("Mr. Moon") and jazzy sweet ("Half the Man"). Unabashedly mixing disco into their funky soul, Jamiroquai even make cheesy synths sound good. --Suzanne McElfresh

Excellent.......2006-05-23
THIS IS THE BEST ALBUM IN THE WORLDDDD!!! LOL
4real I love this album soo much - it's ma favourite in the world, and it's absolutely timeless - u can never get bored of this, u'll always take it out now and again and go omg i cant believ hw good tht is lol. The best song on it is definitly Space Cowboy (an i got mad wen they neva put it on the film 'the return of the space cowboys lol). However, the beginning of 'Scam' is truly magical. The worst licks off this album are 'The Kids' and maybe 'Journey To Arnhemland, which is an instrumental. At 1st I h8ed 'Half the man', but then I loved it cos i find it easy ta sing to lol. 'Manifest Destiny' is amazing too, and I can really relate to it. 'Just another Story' is FANTASTIC!!! I'm a real Jamiroquai fan and out of all their albums this is the best (EOPearth comes 2nd!)!!
If u havent already got it - i strongly reccomend u buy it - u wont regret it it's amazing - even beats ma fav redhotchilipeppers album (BSSM - 4 those fellow fans ;) )
THE RETURN OF THE SPACE COWBOY IS AMAZING!
Unique.......2006-03-04
After 1994, acid jazz started to lose mass popularity and soon sank down like a Titanic to the bottom of the sea. But if there was just one band that made an effort to develop the genre, it was Jamiroquai with their second album Return Of The Space Cowboy. They took the influences from vintage funk, jazz, soul and latin music that made most of their debut, Emergency On Planet Earth, and took them to another level of musical language. Open-minded and passionate musicians, they didn't limit themselves to any boundaries of the genre. Unlike Emergency, this album doesn't sound like anything you've heard before. My personal favourite, "Stilness In Time" is a breezy latin number, with a catchy chorus that you will probably sing all day long after listening to it in the morning. On "Half The Man" the band tried to experiment with unusial sounds, blending weird synthesizer, panoramic Rhodes piano, organ, acoustic guitar, latin percussion and Jay's blues-inflected vocals. Manifest Destiny is a beautiful slow-tempo number with the main melody played on a bass guitar. "The Kids" is a thrash-funk, which features some first-rate turntable workout, while "Morning Glory" is a meditative jazzy number with a long trumpet solo, which reminds of Miles Davis. The infamous didgeridoo turns up on just one track, the dark instrumental "Journey To Arnhemland." The first single and now classic "Space Cowboy" (a song about getting high with the help of marijuana) serves as a perfect conclusion of the album, leaving an unconquerable desire to listen to it one more time.
Long story short, this is a unique album made with a perfect taste and impressive technical performance. The album's only drawback is weak production, but still the music is the best they've ever done. If you think that Jamiroquai are just a disco-funk band, try this and you'll find out they are (or were) much more interesting and innovative.
Pretty good CD........2006-02-25
This CD wasn't bad, not Jamiroquai's best, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Fave songs are "Scam", "Light Years" & "Space Cowboy". These songs are infused with a great funk & R&B sound, which most fans love & come to expect from the very talented Jamiroquai.
BASS!.......2005-11-22
There are so many reviews here that I don't feel one can add much more to the opinion of musicality on this project. However, I will say this - every bassist needs this album. It should be one of 10 absolutely necessary albums that every electric bass player should own. Bassist Stuart Zender joined this band as a young teenager, but it's no doubt that he was immediately praised by already famous bassists in the industry through every magazine! The groove, feel, and maturity on this album is really amazing (especially for such a young player) so explore it. Learn from it.
Jamiroquai Won Me Over With This Album!!.......2005-11-18
This album is so good!
It's a shame it was virtually slept upon here in the states!
But back in 1994, while over in the U.K., I went to see
the Brand New Heavies featuring N'dea Davenport
(another fave of mine from that era!)and a freind
told me that if I loved them, I was sure to love this almost new group at the time..Jamiroquai.
Well, we went to catch them in concert as well and WOW!
I was hooked by their sound, style and Jay-Kay's vocalizations.
Now I don't agree or understand about the comparisons that
some make between Jay and Stevie Wonder, because they
sound nothing alike, but I guess because the Jamiroquai
sound was so retro with the heavy fender rhodes, clavinet,
arp, moog & oberheim synths, etc. (circa 1970's)
that some had to make the comparison
to categorize what they were hearing!---
This album is the first Jamiroquai album that
I bought and it's great from start to finish!
"Space Cowboy", "Stillness In Time", "Half The Man",
"Manifest Destiny" "Journey To Arnhemland" & "Morning Glory"
all still stand the test of time!
Stuart Zender is an absolutely incredible bassist!
It's like the late Bernard Edwards of CHIC, Verdine White of E,W&F
and Larry Graham of Sly & The Family Stone / Graham Central Station
morphed and merged into the body of a young white kid!
Then, I went back and bought their debut
"Emergency On Planet Earth", which I also love, and then
of course, there is "Traveling Without Moving" which gave
them their crossover hit "Virtual Insanity" and finally got
them love here in the states outside the small but
loyal ultra-hip fan base they have here!
If you buy either 3 of the aforementioned albums,
you can't go wrong!

"Club d'Elf combines the roaring avant-funk of electric-era Miles with the legato drift of the Grateful Dead ... heady music that doesn't neglect the tail." - Time Out New York
This legendary underground dub/jazz/Moroccan/trance/electronica group led by bassist Mike Rivard (Morphine, The Story) has held an eight-year residency at the Lizard Lounge in Cambridge. The group has garnered critical praise, drawn sold-out crowds, and topped local polls in jazz, DJ, electronica, and jam band categories. Features John Medeski & Billy Martin (Medeski, Martin & Wood), DJ Logic, Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie), Mat Maneri, Duke Levine (Shawn Colvin), Alain Mallet (Paul Simon), Mister Rourke (Soulive), and more.
Customer Reviews:
A veritable cornucopia . . . .......2007-02-21
. . . for the ADHD, video game, generally aesthetically overloaded generation.
This musical gallimaufry, to me, sits there like a congealed, two-day-old bad stew that never achieved lift-off. Admittedly, it's almost certainly not aimed at baby-boomers such as myself.
But that doesn't mean it's palatable.
For anyone.
The problem for me--and I don't think it's just a generational thing--is that there's no res here. Yes, there's lots of (semi-appealing) Activity, but not much of consequence: North-African, Dub/Club, World-jazzish, electronica ephemera strew themselves about abundantly, without ever (at least for me) achieving anything of consequence. Where's the Authentic Voice emerging out of this cacophony? Show me one memorable melodic statement, one bit of musical poignancy. Even the way-out jazz avant-garde rather regularly achieves these.
If you dig the latest string of hip musical jags parading themselves before your aural palette in a not uninteresting fashion, this might be the disc for you. But don't blame me if the high fades precipitously: I really doubt you'll be listening to this rapidly decaying half-life music six or even two months from now. If you don't care, that's OK. But someday, you're gonna have to move on to Real Music.
Call me when you're ready: I'm sure I'll have some suggestions for you.
A sick antidote.......2006-11-30
A sick, sick antidote for a musical world where albums get lost in the iPod shuffle. This album is worth listening to end-to-end, going on the whole 70 minute journey, and don't forget your dancing shoes.
Take the brilliant strings and horns of many, many genres - electronica, funk, jazz, drum n bass, dub, Indian classical - and tie them all together with a big ecstatic Moroccan bow, and you might begin to unwrap what Club d'Elf presents in its live albums. "Now I Understand" takes that live energy and polishes it down to a smooth, refined, and deeply dirty sound.
One thing that stands out about "Now I Understand" is its psychological depth. Unlike albums that hit only one emotional note, with Club d'Elf one minute you're grasping the pain of the universe and the next song you're happy as a cat in the sun, and dancing in the kitchen with the blinds up. Mike Rivard's skillful and detailed transformations will take you by the hand across some deep landscapes, be ready! There's not one musician on the album that isn't at his peak, and it's like being in some funky playground where all the kids are musical Einsteins. Medeski's organs will make you laugh. Brahim Fribgane's oud strings will make you swoon in the old-fashioned North African way. And the whole album will pull you into the world of trance, where you can hear something old, something new, something genuine, something sexy.

super chill-out pop music.......2004-03-02
i got this single by chance when i had nothing better to buy, but you know what? it turned out to be one of the best singles i've ever bought (first come all the madonna singles). anyway although the album version is kinda strange and hard to get acustomed to, the 4 other remixes are absolutely awsome. especially the babinstrumental and the classic club remix. this cd single is worth your money but don't let them rob you. i also recomend the single for SUPERSONIC a lot!
Fantastic.......2003-07-07
This cd-single is just fantastic. All musics were flawlessly produced and a masterpiece was generated. Anyone who loves pop music should have a copy of it.
wow!.......2002-11-05
Quite possibly the best Jamiroquai song, as well as the best single they've released! The album version and radio edit (video version) are incredible, and the remix is one of few jamiroquai remixes that's worth listening to. I highly recommend this purchase!
orbital array of sounds.......2002-07-04
--This is a must for anyone that loves music w/ a pulse. It is both cerebral and visceral. Recommended for candy-flippin.
Love it, love it.......2002-02-25
Heard a remix of this song while I was in Greece and I fell in love with it. Once I got Back here I had to find that mix. I love the Classic Radio Mix of this song. I'm really not feeling the original cut though.

Owning most of the 'Winter Chill' series and all of the 'Serve Chilled' series, I have come to expect impressive, extremely listenable quality music compilations from the absolutely amazing Hed Kandi label (shameless plug: www.hedkandi.com), but I was completely blown away by this offering, my first experience with `The Acid Lounge' series (which Hed Kandi refers to as its "drunken uncle"). MAN, this stuff is smooth! Amazing. Buy it. Now. I can't wait to get my hands on the rest of the albums in the series.
10 STARS AND THEN SOME..........2003-05-08
"ACID LOUNE IN SPACE" IS BY FAR THE BEST COMPILATION CD EVER!!!! THIS BABY IS PACKED WITH SO MANY KILLER TRACKS THAT YOU FORGET WHAT'S WHAT!! LET'S SEE, THERE'S 45 DIP'S "VA VA VOOM" AND "GORGEUOS GEORGE" THAT ARE BOTH ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL AND MYSTERIOUS...THEN THERE'S THE SULTRY 1960'S INFLUENCED "BUBBLE LOVE" AND "I REALLY WANT U"... AND THE SUPER-FUNKY-GET-UP-AND-SHAKE-THAT-THANG SONG "FLYIN' HIGH" BY SPACE HOPPA--I SWEAR I WAS UP ON THE COFFEE TABLE DANCING TO THIS SONG! BASTIAN'S "LOVE IS INCREDIBLE!" IS AS GROOVY AS IT IS SENTIMENTAL; CHECK OUT THE SYNTH/GUITAR SOLO TOWARDS THE END--WICKED!! "SHOWROOM DUMMIES" IS HUMOROUS AND CONTAGIOUS...A GUARANTEED SING-ALONG SONG! THEN THERE'S "WHAT GIVES?" THAT'S NICELY REMIXED BY PHENOM MIXER, HERBERT (I THINK THIS GUY IS ACTUALLY FROM OUTERSPACE). WHOOO!! I'LL BE HERE WRITING ALL DAY IF I COMMENTED ON EVERY SONG ON THIS SET...TAKE MY WORD FOR IT--ALL THE SONGS ARE BRILLIANT AND WERE WELL SELECTED FOR "ACID LOUNGE IN SPACE"...EVEN THE CD COVER AND THE SEGUES ARE WITTY, CREATIVE AND ENTERTAINING--LOVE THE CONCEPT!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEASE GO OUT AND GET THIS CD...OR YOU MAY HAVE TO ORDER IT LIKE I DID BECAUSE LOCAL RECORD STORES DON'T KNOW HOW TO CARRY GOOD MUSIC--ONLY A PLETHORA OF "TOP FORTY" GARBAGE...BUT I DIGRESS...REVIEW YOU LATER!

Space Box:1970&Beyond(Space,Krautrock&Acid Trips)V/A.......2004-07-25
When I first got this fantastic 3-CD collection,I believe that I,personally contacted the label,Cleopatra to tell them just HOW MUCH I like,no make that nearly worship 'Space Box...'.When I first recieved this release,I hadn't even heard of most of the 36 different artists. In the CD booklet, they let you know the address of most of the artists so that interested parties can contact the bands themselves to find out more.I've done it and THANKS to 'Space Box...' I'm actually in touch now with a few of the bands. Some of my favorites through out the three discs are Architectural Metaphor whose track "Brainticket" I simply cannot get enough of.Also really like Kluster's "22:09",Conrad Schnitzler's "Contrapuntal Interstellar" and Dark Matter's "Past Zero Time".So MANY cool tunes here, also liked the couple of Chrome cuts like the trend-setting "3rd From The Sun" and Helios Creed's eerie "Leaving The Body".Melting Euphoria has a non-lp never released tune on here,"In Aquarian Dream" which pretty much defines modern day space rock in itself. There are several Hawkwind and related tracks present, like the 12" version of "Valium 10",Nik Turner's recital of "Ten Seconds Of Forever",Michael Moorcock's "Time Center" and Harvey Bainbridge with "The Changing".Should mention that this was the place where I first discovered the bands Guru Guru,Faust,Harmonia and Porcupine Tree.Never has such an exclusive collection, like this has ever put me in touch with so many cool bands.Just about EVERY one of the 36 cuts did it for me.Consider the 'Space Box...' in a sense sort of the krautrock sacred scrolls.
space is deep.......2003-10-13
So deep that it's almost impossible to come up with a box that spans three decades and covers a topic as broad and diffuse as "space" music. Nevertheless, this is a very fine overview of major contributors to the music genre that involves gurgling synthesizers, repetitive rhythmic patterns, and weird sounds in general. If your acquaintance with this type of music goes no further than Pink Floyd's Meddle or Kraftwerk's Autobahn, this is a fine place for further exploration. I have an extensive collection of music, and still much of this is new to me, such as the Gong sound collage that isn't on any of my many Gong albums.
Not too good...get the originals.......2003-08-07
I was pretty disappointed with a lot of the tunes on this box set: many sound like sound checks or rehearsal space jams that go on a lot longer than they should. There are a few good tracks sprinked throughout. Alien Panetscapes is a standout - but I played bass with this group for a few months (not on this lineup) so I am biased ;-).
For some mind expanding sounds:
space rock:
Gong
Hawkwind
Ozric Tentacles (sp?)
Alien Panetscapes
Electronica from the 60's and beyond (academic sound):
Ilhan Mimaroglu - Wings of the Delerious Demon
Morton Subotnick
Pauline Oliveros
Milton Babbitt - Philomel
...
If you like spaced out acid jams, this one's a no brainer!.......1999-07-23
When I discovered "Space Box" at amazon.com I had two completely opposite reviews staring me in the face. One said it was garbage and the other said it was great. I decided to take a chance, since it was priced so economically. Boy, am I glad I did! If you like such artists as Helios Creed, Cluster, Chrome, Hawkwind and Faust, snag this one right now. Listen to these CD's a couple of times and you're liable to find yourself dialing up a few of your old friends in search of a handful of tabs! Get out your synchro-energizer and let the likes of Guru Guru and Amon Duul II take you on a little departure from our world. Actually, better make that a little departure from our galaxy! So, you ask, do I like "Space Box"? Get real. I don't like it. I love it! If you don't scarf up this set now, don't come crying to me later about how you have to shell out $50 to get it from some used CD store. I'll only say "I told you so".
A little cheesy, i'm sure you'd agree........1999-06-10
While some material on this cd is quite good (Hawkwind, Cluster, Harmonia, the older stuff) the tracks by most of the newer bands are just plain silly, uninventive shlock that makes for filler. Try a Faust or Can album, or some Fripp/Eno stuff before wasting time on this one. The worst part is that the box is so cheesy, not to mention the typos (the worst being the exclusion of song 6 on cd 2 in the track listing -- come on, cleopatra, don't you hire someone to check these things?)

Hawkwind - 'Acid Daze,Volume 1' (Receiver).......2004-10-31
When I first got my copy of this disc,I guess I was maybe 'sort of' thrilled mostly because it was,I believe my 8th Hawkwind disc I ever bought.I was a tad blown away,at first by the cover, but seeing that it was,in fact an import I went ahead and bought it on the count that it was low-priced.True,it is pretty much a second rate compilation and it certainly IS cutting-room floor material.Maybe I just liked having a slightly different version of the tracks "Space Is Deep","You Shouldn't Do That" and "Silver Machine".You Hawkfans KNOW what I'm talking about, with the way that Hawkwind sometimes has like up to ten(10)different versions of certain songs. For die-hards(hee-hee Beavis, you said 'hard')ONLY.
Me Too.......2000-12-30
Badly Mastered outtakes and "cutting-room floor"

Weird and wonderful - Gong lives in the 21st Century!.......2006-05-16
On the face of it, it's an old band's obscure latest album with only a couple of original members.
To most prog fans that's a familiar story, one that will immediately invoke a horrible mental montage of the many dusty, abandoned mid-90s CDs dwelling dormant and boring in your rack (or drawer, or pile if you prefer). But do not fear. 'Acid Motherhood' is a Gong album in every respect. It just has different people playing on it. That's all. Instead of Steve Hillage we've got Kawabata Makoto, an even more out-there version. Instead of Tim Blake we've got Cotton Casino, another even more out-there version (both from Acid Mothers Temple, but that's a whole other story). And essentially, other than 30 years that's the only big difference - it's all more 'out there'. Daevid Allen's absolutely unmistakeable vocal style is as present and correct (and good) as ever, there's the requisite Allenish approach to a standard-length psychedelic pop song in 'Brainwash Me' (a definite highlight), and there's two chunky noisy freakout tracks too. It lacks the thematic continuity one might be used to from Gong, but it almost exonerates itself from this criticism because it confounds any expectations. It does not sound like you think it would sound if you listened to both bands separately, and hence it also doesn't fall into the most common criticisms of these two bands ("too silly" for Gong and "too self-indulgent" for AMT). There is only one song that could possibly be construed as "self-indulgent" - the monster jam 'Makototen', which sees guitarists Josh Pollock and Makoto respectively holding down an enlessly-ascending chord riff and jamming wildly and noisily. However, it's actually not self-indulgent at all as Makoto's solos are far from guitar posturing - they brood and wail from within the mix, and are usually treated with enough effects that they're not easily distinguished from the rest of the underlying noise swells.
And therein lies the most surprising thing about 'Acid Motherhood': the intensity is all (and I do mean all) on Gong's part, and the subtlety belongs to the Acid Mothers alumni. Particularly impressive is the pairing of Cotton Casino and Gilli Smyth on the mad, funky 'Supercotton' - Smyth's finely-honed space whisper melding wonderfully with Cotton's full, washing synth tweaks. This song in particular features both original Gong vocalists in prime form - Allen as forceful and wild as ever, Smyth proving superiorily effective, which is of course incredibly encouraging as neither are what one would call young. Plus, the heaviest and most intense track, 'Zeroina', was written by Allen and Mike Howlett ('classic' Gong bassist) alone.
'Acid Motherhood' is full of fire and weirdness, but contains a couple of mellower, wistful numbers that show Allen's wiser lyrical side - 'Olde Fooles Game' in particular seems to be about continuing his 1960s musical ideology for forty years, in spite of the huge changes that have taken place in that time.
Over all, this is an album that does the Gong name its full justice in the 21st Century. The only way I can see old Gong fans disliking this is that it's TOO progressive.
Gong - 'Acid Motherhood' (Voiceprint).......2004-12-28
What a out-of-this-world like music collaboration, between Gong's glissando guitarist/frontman Daevid Allen and Japanese psych ensemble Acid Mothers Temple's guitarist Kawabata Makoto.Whew!Watch it now, that may be a bit too much for some of you.'Acid Motherhood' is an above average effort. The Voiceprint label really knows what they're doing with their out going CD releases. The most mesmerizing tracks here are "Supercotton"(with guest vocalist Gilli Smyth),"Brainwash Me",the spoken word "Bible Study","Bazuku Logix" and the thirteen-minute mind scramber "Makototen"(great synth work).Line-up is:Daevid Allen-guitar&vocals,Kawabata Makoto-guitar,second AMT member here Cotton Casino-synthesizer&vocals,Orlando Allen-drums,Josh Pollock-guitar,Dharmawan Bradbridge-bass and Gilli Smyth-guest vocalist.A must-have for all fans of bands like Gong,Acid Mothers Temple,Ozric,Hawkwind or even psych in general.Highly recommended.
Back to basics - magnificent!.......2004-03-21
By back to basics I mean that Gong in the recent years has become less creative than they where before. On their latest tour in Europe i 2001 they played old material. The concerts where magnificent, there is no doubt about that. But something was lacking - they based their concerts on passed sucesses. No harm in that, but it was almost as they had lost their edge.
But now Daevid Allen has joined forces with Acid Mothers Temple and is back on track where he belong. New creative styles, utterly compelling guitarplaying and a lot of sarcasm and ironics. Gong is back where they belong - at 65 Daeved Allen is as creative as ever - like we want him to be. Buy and enjoy!

Kinski / Acid Mothers Temple (Sub Pop) Split CD.......2004-08-05
Holy cow!Has anyone seen my brain floating around out there...anywhere?Without a doubt, one of the BEST split CD's out there now. This is my first exposure to Kinski and now I can certainly see what all the fuss is about. This is no bars hold head-tripping music.Total of four tracks that tally up to one hour.No best cuts here because all four TOTALLY rip, specially the last two,the thirteen-minute mind melter "Planet Crazy Gold" and the well written twenty-six minute(whew!) "Virginal Plane".Call it space rock, call it experimental noise rock.Whatever you call it,it's a must-have for fans of this genre.Should appeal to fans of Starfield, vintage Hawkwind,Spacemen 3,Flying Saucer Attack and MAYBE Bardo Pond.
noisy and beautiful... great........2004-05-19
This record is so ambient and so noisy. It's very extreme.
There isn't a whole lot to say about it except that it's good.
It's something you'll have to hear for yourself... Love it or
hate it. The kinski stuff is an easier listen and much more
accessible than the acid mothers temple stuff. Acid mothers
temple takes a while to get used to. But i highly reccommend
this record. Awesome.
