A Flashing of Knives and Green Water

About the Artist
Character began as a two bass and drums post rock three-piece almost two years ago. Originally the brain child of Eric Williams, Scott Martin and Eric Andre, Character was primarily a recording outfit throughout its early existence. Constant feuding with second bassist Andre led to his dismissal from the band and subsequent humiliation at the hands of Martin and Williams. The group was put on hiatus for a year while Martin pursued other interests with Esposito, a crack pop unit that also included later Character member Dave Paulson. Esposito folded and Martin returned to Character with Paulson in tow. Local legend William Tyler of Lifeboy, Lambchop, Superdrag, and guitarist on the most recent Silver Jews album was soon recruited, bringing his ambient shoe-gazer wash to the mix. Ryan Norris, Nashville's "MacGyver of local music," was asked to provide keyboards shortly thereafter and the core lineup of Character was solidified. Recording sessions followed at the Idaho Palace with Martin at the helm recording the ambitious young group on his Roland VS880 Digital 8-track. All but the title track, recorded at Darkhorse Studio in Franklin, would come from these sessions. The result was the six-song e.p. "A Flashing of Knives and Green Water," a work of unusual depth and originality from such a young and newly formed group. The sound is ambient, droney, by turns pastoral and brainy, owing much to the post-rock scenes of Chicago and Louisville while still expounding on and changing the form of instrumental songwriting . After shopping the record to several indies, the group settled on Dave Stein’s Set International imprint, a label that would allow for the appropriate amount of artistic freedom and flexibility. Later recording sessions at Sound Emporium Studios would yield the "What You Are In the Dark" Character/Stone Jack Jones 7" split, out on Set International and Roger Moutenot's Fictitious Records label. Character’s astounding live performances add a new facet to their music. With the addition of Phil Pomeroy, grandson of "Ring of Fire" songwriter Merle Kilgore and son of sought after Nashville session bassist Dave Pomeroy, on glockenspiel and flute, followed by Sam Smith (also of Lifeboy fame) on second drum kit and Luke Schneider on theremin, Character’s sound continues to develop and explode like a futuristic movie soundtrack. Character has been exploding on the local Nashville club circuit as well as across the eastern seaboard, playing Athens, Atlanta, Lexington, Knoxville and Cincinnati. The band’s record and live shows have been receiving rave reviews from local press and much support from local music stores. Their e.p. has sold over 300 copies locally since the beginning of the year. Character will soon begin working with Yo La Tengo producer Roger Moutenot on a new full-length album, while continuing to play shows throughout the U.S.

5 out of 5 stars destined for great things........2002-05-23

Great live band. A really good band to see live. The only problem with this cd is that it's too short. Patiently waiting for more.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Nashville instrumental rock.......2002-03-13

Character is one...awesome live band. They incorporate that live sound on to cd. All six tracks on "A Flashing of Knives and Green Water" are extremely impressive. My personal favorite is Track 4, Theme from "Starkwalker". These guys have a more indier sound than most instrumental bands and they don't drone on with too much reverb. Check them out.
