Side of the Road
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
With the release of their debut CD "Side of the Road", Trigger Happy fromaustintexas has staked a claim on a Texas-sized share of the Alternative-Country/Americana title. "Side of the Road", released in November 2001 on Genuine Cowhide Records (U.S.) and distributed in Europe through Phoenix THMV--showcases a veteran band with an absolute mastery or many American musical styles powered with a modern alternative dynamic range--blending jangly pop with hillbilly with garage rock with rockabilly with cowpunk and maybe some R&B (did we miss anyone?) into a powerful and cohesive statement of a high energy 21st century roadhouse roots pop band.
At first listen you might think it's a party record with its good time attitude, energy level and humorous wordplay...well it is! Then you start to catch more lyrics--or maybe the lyrics start to catch you. Sometimes wacky and comedic, such as the crowd-pleaser "Boom" ...other times seething with dark amd powerful socio-political imagery, like the moody title track "Side of the Road" ... and many feature a high-techno-speak slant to the wordage which has earned tracks like "Megabyte Mademoiselle" the potentially genre-launching nickname of CYBER-billy!

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Trailer Park Musical a good hear........2007-05-15
This musical is a good laugh and can bring up the spirits of any musical theatre buff. The voices are excellent and they showcase a great characterization of the personages represented in the show. It is a CD that entices the listener to go ahead and get tickets to the show and go see it. Also a personal acquaintance of mine Leslie Kritzer does a phenomenal job on the CD.
A Tornado of Fun!.......2007-04-10
This seems to be my year for finding recordings of lesser known musicals that are just awesome. It started with buying Zombie Prom, and continues with The Great American Trailer Park Musical!
But this show is just all-out fun! The tunes are catchy (I got one of them running through my head, right now) and the lyrics are quite clever. The three main ladies become the Greek chorus, telling us about life in their trailer park, Armadillo Acres, located in Starke, Florida. The show then focuses on one agoraphobic housewife who hasn't left her trailer in 20 years, and her husband who has had enough and starts fooling around with a stripper who is on the run from her boyfriend. Sound crazy? It is! And a whole lotta fun!
Yes, there are some explicit lyrics, but nothing excessive. So do yourself a favor and give this album a listen. You might just want to move into your own "manufactured home" before you know it.
One Of My Favorite New Musicals In Years.......2007-01-31
When I tell people about this show, I tell them it is far better than it had to be... With a title like that, the audience draw is already built in, but with great songs and a very clever story (without ever being offensive or degrading) this musical is a fun hit. And while it is not the old-school "Okalhoma" style musical, there are a lot of musical niceties about the show - layered melody lines, tight harmonies and clever clever phrases and lyrics. I fully recommend it.
The show (and Recording) ROCKS.......2006-09-26
The whole point of theatre, even in a tongue-in-cheek satire like this one, is to have some sense of truth. The "Great American Trailer Park Musical" completely hits the target dead-on. With it's ridiculous pop culture references, use of white trash musical pastiche (honky tonk country, corporate rock, wedding disco, and the like), and general use of bad taste in a visual (and audio) aesthetic, the show is one loaded joke that never tires. And the over the top performances, all grounded in this evident truth, provide an evening of Laugh after Laugh - more so than similar pieces like "Urinetown" and "Altar Boys".
Sure the language, for those who have expressed concern in above reviews, can be strong at times. But never is the language used in a matter of fact fashion. For those who have ever even remotely hung around a trailer park (as it quite Clearly states in the TITLE) or even around those who inhabit a Sociologists Jackpot of research, You know that crude humor and strong language are staple of the norm.
"Oklahoma" and "Cats" this show is not. However, "Great American Trailer Park Musical" is a definite piece to listen and pay attention to. With the general climate of new musicals to be either repackaged musicals from movies (Wedding Singer, Hairspray, Footloose, etc) or jukebox musicals (Mamma Mia, All Shook Up, Hot Feet, etc) - there is a new genre that is emerging, the "in-joke" musical. Trailer Park, Altar Boys, Spelling Bee, and title of show are examples of this. These are shows that blur satire and exaggeration with real life all the while dealing in a specific subject matter.
"Trailer Park" is a hip, new and exciting piece of music theatre, even if not groundbreaking. For those who like to play it safe may I suggest the "20 Great Broadway ShowStoppers" CD - all songs are from 1932 to 1949. You will be sure no profane language will infect you there.
Wasn't That Funny.......2006-07-29
I gave this a good listen, but did not find it all that funny ... or memorable.

A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Customer Reviews:
Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27
This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.
Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04
Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.
Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.
Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28
There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)
Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04
As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.
One Night Only .......2006-07-19
I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

For a Cover Album, this is very good.......2006-05-14
While most people consider "Sgt Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" not only the greatest Beatles album of all time, but the greatest album of all time - I tend to think that "Abbey Road" is the superior album. One reason why I think "Abbey Road" stands out is the state of the Beatles as a band during the time of recording. "Abbey Road" was recorded at a time when tensions and emotions were high between the four members of the band. It is when emotions are high that often a band produces their best work. Fleetwood Mac also did their best work under similar circumstances. Tensions and emotions between the members of Fleetwood Mac were running high when they recorded "Rumours" - and it became their most successful album. Great works are often targets to be covered by other artists. "Rumours" was an album that was covered by a variety of artists on a tribute album: "Legacy: A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac's Rumours". While there was an admirable job of the covers on this collection, it failed to capture the emotions of the original. When I discovered George Benson's "The Other Side of Abbey Road", my initial fears that surrounded the Fleetwood Mac "Legacy" cover began to surface. My curiosity of seeing a legendary Jazz artist such as Benson cover my favorite album outweighed the fears I was having. While I knew it was going to be impossible for Benson to reach the level of emotion that the Beatles had on "Abbey Road", I was very surprised how close Benson came to hitting the mark, I was surprised how much Benson "got it" when it came to covering "Abbey Road".
George Benson is basically a jazz guitarist and vocalist. In the 1970s Benson suddenly found success as a pop star with such hits as "On Broadway", "Give Me the Night", and "Turn Your Love Around". It was Benson's "This Masquerade" that gave him critical acclaim as he would take the coveted award at the 1977 Grammy Awards for Record of the Year. Many people forget that Benson's musical roots are in jazz. It is a jazz cover of "Abbey Road" that is done on "The Other Side of Abbey Road".
It is important to note that "The Other Side of Abbey Road" is not a full cover of the Beatles' "Abbey Road". There are only 10 songs that are included on "The Other Side of Abbey Road". The songs that are missing are "Maxwell's Silver Hammer", "Sun King", "Mean Mr. Mustard", "Polythene Pam", "She Came in Through the Bathroom Window", "Carry That Weight", and "Her Majesty". This was something that I found disappointing because I have an immediate curiosity about how Benson would have covered these songs.
Benson does not order the remaining songs in the order in which they appear on the original Beatles' "Abbey Road" album. Normally this would be something that disappoints me, however Benson structures the 10 songs included into 5 tracks. Four of the five tracks include combining two or more songs on one track. The five tracks are "Golden Slumbers/You Never Give Me Your Money", "Because/Come Together", "Oh! Darling" (the only 'single' track), "Here Comes The Sun/I Want You (She's So Heavy)", and "Something/Octopus' Garden/The End" (the one track with more than 2 songs). While I didn't feel I would like the way that Benson combined the songs - it works. Benson does a beautiful job at providing the fusion needed on each of these tracks. Benson could have easily found a way to fuse all ten tracks together into a single one - but I do think the way he combined the songs helps to break things up a bit.
Benson also doesn't sing all of the tracks. He uses instrumentals for some of the covers while providing partial vocals on others - and this also hits the mark beautifully. Benson also assembles a terrific orchestra to cover the songs. This includes Strings, Woodwinds, Brass, Percussion, and Piano! Included in this band is Herbie Hancock on piano.
Here is a brief summary of the five tracks:
"Golden Slumbers/You Never Give Me Your Money": Benson "wraps" at the beginning and end a vocalized "Golden Slumbers" around an instrumental "You Don't Give Me Your Money". "Golden Slumbers" has an orchestral feel to it while "You Don't Give Me Your Money" a smooth jazz feel to it (that also has some orchestral qualities to it).
"Because/Come Together": This is one of the album's highlights. "Because" starts out with the orchestral feel to it before the segue into "Come Together". Many say Aerosmith nailed the passion of this song with their cover. I would also subscribe that Benson nails it here with his jazzy cover. I love how Benson will improvise later in the song and make the use of the horns.
"Oh! Darling": Benson provides a supper-club style feel to this cover. This isn't my favorite Beatles song, but Benson does a nice job on this.
"Here Comes the Sun/I Want You (She's So Heavy)": Once again Benson starts out with an orchestral feel ("Here Comes the Sun") and then goes into a jazzy feel of "I Want You". While it doesn't have the same haunting feel of the Beatles original, Benson puts his own haunting spin on "I Want You" (as heard in the instrumentals).
"Something/Octopus's Garden/The End": Benson does an incredible job on this. He starts out with an orchestral feel on "Something" that is mostly instrumental with partial vocals. Benson really captures the passion of "Something". The segue isn't quite smooth into "Octopus's Garden" and "The End", but it works. The latter two songs are instrumental and provide a jazzy feel. These latter songs showcase the talents of the band that Benson assembles.
I wish the liner notes provided some insight into why Benson did what he did. Still, all in all this is a surprising good cover. Jazz and Beatles' fans should enjoy this.
How do you make a tribute just months after the original?.......2004-07-02
I guess this is how to make a tribute just months after the original. It speaks volumes, that so soon after the release of Abbey Road, it so affected the culture, that it demanded this wonderful tribute album. IT truly is the other side of Abbey Road. Abbey Road seen through the eyes of some of the greatest Jazz musicians in history. A wonderuly delightful stop at the side of the Abbey Road. Oh, Darling please believe me this album will never do you no harm!
Surprisingly Good for a "Beatles Cover CD". Benson at Best........2002-08-16
I listened to this as an album about twenty years ago during some times when I was in college and more concerned with getting wasted than passing my classes. Those were fun times, nonetheless, and this little gem is one that I got "turned on" to by a friend and fellow Beatles' fan in my "partying era." I ordered the CD recently after hearing the excellent "I Want You." George Benson is strong as both a musician and a singer throughout. Some of the songs, such as "Here Comes The Sun" are a little overdone for my tastes, but the entire CD flows together like a good album from the 60s/70s is supposed to.
OK, but it could have been much better.......2002-06-04
Creed Taylor uses his heavy hands to nearly murder a bunch of classic songs. Fortunately, George Benson had enough talent to overcome the stifling production.
A Bit Bumpy, But Still A Nice Side Trip.......2000-03-01
George Benson's outstanding "The Other Side of Abbey Road" may be the first time tribute was paid to an actual album, as opposed to the assorted songs of an artist or group (Ramsey Lewis and Benson's mentor, Wes Montgomery, had already hit with Beatles covers before this release).
It says much for the deep, rich melodies on "Abbey Road" that they stood sturdy with the arrangements Benson, producer Creed Taylor, and his stellar CTI backup band created. Notables include present and future jazz stars Herbie Hancock, Hubert Laws, and Freddie Hubbard, who contributes some great trumpet fills on "You Never Give Me Your Money" and "I Want You." Benson's ballad style, which he would rely more on in his later solo recordings, transforms "Golden Slumbers" and "Here Comes The Sun" into comforting lullabies without compromising either song's integrity; they indicate how Nat Cole may have covered those songs had he lived. Don Sebesky's string arrangements are first-rate (working the baroque string arrangements of "Because" around "Come Together" as one example), Benson's guitar rings and chimes where needed, the band finds an appealing jazz-blues groove to lock into the melodies and, with the exception of a short-sell fade out on "The End," this stands with "Chet Atkins Picks On The Beatles" as the finest Fab Four intrumental covers album ever.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful album by excellent musicians........2006-03-11
I had not heard of Richard Stoltzman (Clarinet) but this is a generous (66+ minutes)and wonderful CD. The musicians such as guitarist Gene Bertoncini and the English Chamber Orchestra are
excellent. "Sleepless in Seattle" is an upbeat tune and "Out of Africa" is simply beautiful. An excellent variety and treatment of these movie themes. Highly recommended. P.S. - The above
album title shows artist as "Eddie Gomez" - he does play on the album but Mr. Stoltzman is the "headliner."
This CD is My TREASURY!! .......2006-01-08
First tune "The piano" made me get stuck.
And, I was moved to tears.
All the other tunes impress me,too.
This item made Richard Stoltzman to became My Most Favorite Artist of the world.
Now,10years have passed after I boght it.
But it never fades.

Tenors on Tour - Versatile and Beautiful.......2001-06-20
Tenors on Tour is a CD which will live forever. The opening songs by Placido Domingo, His arrangement of Blue Moon and Moon River, set the tone for the CD. To hear Richard Tucker do "Climb every Mountain" was a wonderful trip down memory lane. Who will ever forget him? Placido continues with Broadway..Maria from West Side Story and a Beatles song "Yesterday". Mandy Patinkin's "Over the Rainbow" is classic and wonderful! But in my opinion Jose Carreras has the most "goose bumping" production on the entire CD. His Ave (Maria) is so beautifully done it may just bring tears to your eyes. The "King" Pavarotti is the "clean-up Hitter with selections from LaBoheme, and he does "O Sole Mio" as only He can do it. This CD is a treat for anyone who enjoys fine music. You will play it over and over again.

Customer Reviews:
Mostly a decent CD.......2003-10-30
I wonder how many people saw the ad for this CD on TV and ordered it right away without looking further into the contents. Brightman? Bocelli? Pavarotti? Florez? Watson? All Three Tenors? All on one CD? Sounded like a winner in the ad. They don't mention the Main Title from Star Wars. Nor do they mention (even Amazon doesn't show it!), that Anne Sofie Von Otter's performance is actually a duet with Elvis Costello, who simply does not have the chops or vocal gifts that most of the other artists on this CD are blessed with. In fact, that song is positively dreadful, and it's all because of Costello's vocally-strained style. What the hell is he doing on this CD? The rest of this CD is generally fine, but certainly do not expect a CD full of classical music, and be prepared to skip song #2 every time you play the CD.

Customer Reviews:
Comforting, Uplifting -- especially in these times.......2004-04-12
Ellis Paul and Vance Gilbert have been friends for many, many years. And so, it was natural for them to decide to do an album together. What I find unique and inspiring, is that they chose (with two exceptions) to record *other peoples* songs, and that they decided to compile a collection of songs for humans living in a post-September 11th world.
Each of the songs they chose is fully of Love and Spirit, and seems to be trying to take from the events of September 11th, a sense of oneness with other human beings, rather than alienation. And hope and openness, rather than dispair. I especially love the choices of "May I Suggest" by Susan Werner, with front vocals by Vance, and "The Only Way" by Mark Erelli with front vocals by Ellis. May I Suggest, is a bold invitation to see the beauty and the blessings of now and what is held in our future. On "The Only Way" Ellis Paul sings his heart out, emboldening us all to live our lives in Love, not fear.
The second to last cut, "Alone Down Here" one of the two tracks by Paul and Gilbert, challenges the listener to examine whether we are to live our lives cut off from the rest of the world, or rather, in an embrace of the world and all its challenges and blessings. This album is beautifully done. The vocals and the musicianship are fabulous. While the album strikes me as decidedly "mellow", there is nice variety in sounds in these songs. I love this album, and have played it OVER and OVER again!
A Great Collection..........2003-09-10
A Great CD for those who are fans of Ellis and Vance. This is a beautiful collection of songs--the production is simple and lovely, and the harmonies can be downright fascinating. I love it.

Customer Reviews:
This CD will make you believe in music.......2005-02-04
I picked up this CD on a whim in the early 90's as a last minute purchase added to other CDs I was buying. I've been a fan since the early 80's & they never cease to amaze me. Although this is now an older CD I believe it is one of the King's Singers best. I'd put it right up there with Madrigal History Tour & Good Vibrations. This saucy sextet delivers the goods time & time again with perfect diction, phrasing & pitch. Take a listen & just lose yourself in the harmonys, you won't regret it.
This is the best thing the King's singers have performed.......1999-08-16
I can have many chances to meet Albums the king's singers have performed. This 'Believe in Music' is not one of their best albums, but THE BEST of all their albums. I dont need to explain about this album with long and boring words. Just say "The Best"!.
