Recovery
Editorial Reviews
Missoulian Entertainer- Newspaper- December 6-12, 2001
Listen to "Recovery" when you feel like stirring up your imagination. Industrial sounds drive this album.
From the Artist
The Us Electric started this project hoping to incorporate some of the analogue sounds of the past with the newer sequencers and vocal processors. Their goal is to continually innovate and create new types of electronic and industrial music. They also strive to produce a variety of styles with an underlying psychedelic theme. The band incorporates the styles and influences of psychedelia and classic rock with the developments of electronica and the industrial genre along with many of their own... read more
Album Description
Track descriptions 1: Recovery
The album's title track is a short number that builds in intensity and crescendos into a powerfully sequenced synth passage. This high-tempo song has been a popular selection in clubs.
2: Light of the Sun
Vo-coded vocals and video game sounds are combined with orchestral passages and spooky synth to create this electro-psychedelic piece. This song is also a huge favorite among music fans who love deep bass beats.
3: Expect
This song is a dark entry into the feelings associated with deception and lies. The distinctive vocal effects and style are reminiscent of the work of Bauhaus.
4: Judas
This is probably the darkest track on the disc. The song builds in intensity until the songs mid-point where heavily processed vocals explode into a final assault. We expect this song to be popular with fans of darker industrial groups like Marilyn Manson.
5: Cancers
This is an experimental ambient track. It is the melancholy track on the disc. It moves slowly through a barrage of sound effects and noises that precede the songs body.
6: Falling
A song about recovery, Falling is a lighter song that defines the tenacious spirit of an individual strengthened by personal experiences.
7: Open Volumes
Very popular with Bauhaus fans, this songs ending passage is particularly intense.
8: Stereo Corpse
This techno driven song is the instrumental piece of this album and utilizes a combination of modern sequencers and analogue equipment. The listener can hear psychedelic influences as well as stylistic similarities with newer electronic artists. The song ends with a powerful digital passage that revisits some of the musical themes from previous tracks.
9: Snake Dream
This is a short one and a half minute piece intended to creep out the listener and put some closure on the disc.

It's Will Johnson's voice that makes Centro-Matic so irresistible: He's gruff and hidden in the guitar fuzz. You strain to hear what he's saying--and that's the hallmark of his success--you keep straining. Fort Recovery marks a decade or so since Johnson formed the outfit, and he dives in with guitars blurry and brimming with sound, his voice curling around the strums like shadows, as on the relatively cleanly-played "Patience for the Ride." Centro-Matic is a couple steps away from the acclaim that the Drive-by Truckers pull down, partially because Johnson's songs are unyielding. They feedback and go slow and feature broken-flow guitar parts (to wit: "Calling Thermatico") and never are just a backdrop for lyrics. Johnson's a bit like Neil Young in that it takes several personas to figure him out: South San Gabriel is weirdly folk-pop and Centro goes for the jugular with guitars getting gritty. Perhaps he's exasperated by his music, pulling him and pushing him with a jostling rock storm of ideas until he relents and makes a killer album like Fort Recovery. --Andrew Bartlett
Album Description
"Centro-matic's music comes on like a sound from a distant dream, something new, yet unmistakably familiar" - Patterson Hood, Drive-By Truckers. "What makes (Will Johnson) such a phenomenal lyricist is that he opts for the simplest language when painting an abstract picture" - Ben Gibbard, Death Cab For Cutie, in the NY Times. "These resonant fables of half-loved underdogs, essentially preposterous scenarios reported with apocalyptic seriousness, call to mind the last two Flaming Lips discs...the band hugely rawks here in an unprecedented approximation of their live show, often summoning the moldy hearts of Mould and Hart. Hell, a harnessed Cobain twang even surfaces" - Pitchforkmedia.com.
Customer Reviews:
best album i've heard in a while.......2006-09-12
pretty melodies, hard rocking guitars and drums, evocative lyrics. centro-matic songs get stuck in your head pretty quickly. they remind me of REM songs played in the style of crazy horse or pavement. this is probably my favorite of their albums. you can throw it on and listen start to finish without wanting to skip a song.
buy this CD and you'll achieve maximum sonic sweetness.
also, see the band live if you get the chance. they bring a bunch of extra rock to the songs when they play 'em live.
2006's best album.......2006-09-12
There may be a finer band on the planet, and there may be a finer songwriter, but if there is, I haven't heard it. Centro-matic are one of Will Johnson's outlets, where the rock is turned up to full Neil Young Crazy Horse, alongside the more contemplative, new-Americana, South San Gabriel and his beautiful solo work. This, the band's seventh album, may just be their best work, opening with the glorious Covered Up In Mines, and proceeding through songs that, at turns, display crunching fuzz rock, and then sweeping beauty. In fact, it is difficult not to use the word 'masterpiece' in any review. The core of the work is Will Johnson - his songs work so well on acoustic guitar that, worked up into full band versions, and accentuated with rock solid instrumentation and the great feeling of studio improvisation, they can't help but dig their way in, until repeated listening is not just desirable, but essential. Easily the best album of the year, so far.
Underapprciated and Overlooked?.......2006-06-23
Surprising that there aren't more reviews on this being that its been out for 4 months. Take the elements of Stones period "Exile on Main Street" a little Byrds melodic edge, and mix things up a `bit and you've got one of the best contemporary rock bands currently on the planet. They've smoothed the edges a bit on "Fort Recovery" but still evoke emotional response from anyone within listening distance. From the hypnotic induced beat of "Calling Thermatico" to the poetically stated "The Fugitives Have Won" Will Johnson's writing contiunes to mature well beyond most of what passes as lyrical content by major label acts.
Simply put, once you've discovered these Denton,Texas masters your hooked for life! Highly recommended for beginners as well as ardent supporters!
Great stuff.......2006-06-08
This is a fantastic album, the best I have heard in a while. The sound is something of a mix between Son Volt and Drive by Truckers, but completely unique and better than anything those two have done recently. I really like the sound; it is not "poppy" at all like some of Wilco's stuff, or like the Band of Horses new album that is over-hyped. The songs are real and of high quality throughout, not a clunker on the album. This is one that will hold up over the years.

Psychotherapist.......2005-10-03
If you can only buy one meditation for cancer, this is the one to purchase. It provides hope. It has positive images and is likely to reduce symptoms which are uncomfortable. The other Healing Power Meditations for Rehabilitation, and Cardiac Relaxation are excellent but for cancer recovey this is the best. It has been recommended to be used while experiencing chemo by patients who are dealing with this disease.

"Ghosts of the Abyss Soundtrack".......2003-04-15
The music fits the film well. The best tune on the album is a remake of Darkness, Darkness (youngbloods 1967) sung by an unknown artist Lisa Torban. A voice that just makes you repeat the selection over and over.
Ghosts of the Awesomeness.......2003-04-14
Oh my goodness! This was the best 3D Imax I have ever seen! (and yes I've seen more than one). And the soundtrack made it as good as it is! The song at the end called Darkness, Darkness was so fantastic and made me cry so much! Best ever!

THANK YOU, thank you, THANK YOU!!!.......2004-05-03
I first heard about this piece of work on 12tepRadio.com. It is simply awesome! There are very few pieces of high quality work in the "Modern Recovery" genre available. From the driving southern rock of Hal Ketchums "Unforgiven", to the poignant story of "Sam Stone" by John Prine, to the clever twist in T. Ghaham Brown's "Wine Into Water", to the freedom described by Travis Tritt in "No More Looking Over My Shoulder", this compilation of great performers and great material is one of the best CDs I've ever heard. This CD belongs on everybody's top 10.
An Incredible CD!!!!!!!.......2003-11-05
This album is a unique and compelling compilation album. What is so special about it is that it is completely focused on sending a hopeful and encouraging message to those struggling with addiction. For years country music has been associated with alcohol. There are thousands of songs about a drinking away a broken heart, drowning your sorrows or throwing back a cold one, but never has the disease of addiction been so abundantly and so powerfully addressed as it is in this album. There are heart breaking and thought provoking songs performed by country super stars such Martina McBride with "Cheap Whiskey" and Travis Tritt with "No More Looking Over My Shoulder". The duet "I'm Trying" performed by Diamond Rio and Chely Wright is a powerful look into the struggle of addiction and the incredible will it takes to overcome it. I would highly recommend this album to anyone who has ever experienced addiction in any part of his or her life or just for anyone who has ever struggled. It is truly inspirational and delivers a hopeful message.
Fantastic Album.......2003-09-05
What a wonderful CD. I have listened to it over and over and continue to marvel at all the songs, the artistry and the underlying message. Clearly a labor of love by the group that put it all together.
So Many Reasons to Love This CD..........2003-08-29
1. TERRIFIC new single - "When Love Rules the World"
2. Wide range of talent and song styles
3. Some of my FAV ARTISTS - Travis, Martina, Hal Ketchum
4. Supporting a really great cause - Recovery from substance abuse and addiction (something so many can relate to!)
And those are just the top four reasons I would highly recommend this CD. It is great to see Nashville stars come out and support an important issue, but so many of these compilation CDs aren't very good at all. Well this one is different! It is a first class, quality product through and through. I was really impressed with the song selection and wide variety of country styles. There is something for everyone on this CD.
If you like country, you'll love it!
SHARE - SONGS FOR HOPE AWARENESS AND RECOVERY.......2003-08-27
This is a great album. I cannot believe nobody had ever thought of putting together an album about drinking and drugging songs in Nashville. The lead cut, WHEN LOVE RULES THE WORLD, is totally infectious. I can't get it out of my head. Good words we need to hear today. I know the money that is made from sales of this album goes to help addicted folks. That in itself is a PLATINUM idea.

Customer Reviews:
I can only assume.......2007-05-06
that this has to be a 5 star achievement. I have heard, owned or enjoyed in some fashion every single thing that MRP put out & had the pleasure of seeing them once so if it says it's the greatest hits, it's true. I actually missed the first day of my great grandmother's funeral (the wake, obviously) just to catch their show which has to be a testimonial in itself. I recommend this.

Product Description
Metropolitan maneuvers effortlessly through genres, incorporating elements of trip hop, orchestral, downtempo, and lo-fi, all the while illustrating a compelling story of loss, affliction, collapse and recovery through Wade Alin's unadorned writing approach and Lauren Cheatham's impassioned delivery. While fans of Portishead, Bjork, and Lamb are certain to appreciate, Metropolitan introduces a sound that is distinctly Atomica.

Igloo Magazine's REVIEW.......2005-12-02
Review by: Mark Teppo, Igloo Magazine (www.igloomag.com)
(09.11.05) The last time I saw Wade Alin, he was on stage surrounded by a crashing surf of buzz-saw guitars and chaotic electronics, howling into a microphone as if he was straining to vomit up his heart. The band was Christ Analogue, one of those vaguely industrial machines filled with the clatter of wrecked machinery, brittle electronics and ephedrine-fueled guitars. Imagine my surprise to hear Metropolitan, the record by his new project, Atomica, where the angst is traded for heartbreak, the guitars for violins and the cold clatter of jilted machinery has been swapped out for the warm morphine drip of a trip-hop inflected turntable. It's not that Alin's gone soft on us; he's just deigned to remove the metallic shell and let us touch the tender flesh beneath.
It isn't his voice you will hear on Metropolitan. Discovering evocative chanteuse Lauren Cheatham when he first relocated to Chicago (following many years in New York City), Alin realized her voice was the anchor of the record. She is the elegiac angel who adds an organic warmth to the songs as she channels Portishead's Beth Gibbons through a veil of thick silk while Alin surrounds her with a wealth of strings and brass and electronic equipment.
"Bittersweet" hangs on the cusp of a turntable loop, a tiny cry of warped vinyl that sounds like it was rescued from the Portishead Dummy sessions and let loose in Alin's studio to make small bird noises from the corner of the room while Cheatham's fragile ballad is laid down over a bed of strings. Static from an old record haunts Alin's siren in "Gun" as she sighs through an old microphone: "If I knew now / How to learn from the past / I would be who I wanted to be." A rusted loop plays behind the sordid rhythm section (stolen from the corner jazz lounge where they've been trapped for a decade or more) and tiny ephemera from a phantom guitar whispers and pleads beneath her voice, lending desperation to her sad tale. Percussion echoes through "Pollen," the sort of reverberation which rattles throughout an abandoned building (or heart) while Cheatham's narrative voice travels through a bustling city (that echo of sound again) and yet never manages to not be alone.
A bleak despair bleeds through Alin's retrospective re-creation of his time in New York City, and Lauren Cheatham adds such a weary worldliness to his lyrics that to listen to Metropolitan is to hear how a city can break your heart over and over again. But Alin's efforts through Atomica aren't to break things, but to move through and rectify the destruction of the past. He wants to gather all the pieces and fit them together once again. "You can't say I've never tried to love you / You can't say I've never tried to die for you," Cheatham sings in "Salt," and her voice, tarnished by the persistent weight of the city, remains pure at its core. The music of Metropolitan is suffused with the melancholy that so pervades trip-hop but Alin and company never succumb to the entropic end inherent in its decay.
Beautifully balanced.......2005-08-13
Atomica's genre isn't the kind of music I usually listen to, so I'm not your typical fan/panegyrist. Being a child of the '80s, I like my drums big, my guitars overdriven, and my vocals screaming. Having said that, Atomica has put together a beautiful piece of work in 'Metropolitan.' One of the album's strongest points is Wade Alin's very polished and balanced production. Unlike so much other 'electronica,' Atomica's music doesn't lean so heavily Alin's electronics or Percy Trayanov's bass that the more 'organic' elements get washed out. Matt Cordier's drumming is refreshingly present; his cymbal hits are surprisingly crisp in the finished recordings. There's even room for (gasp!) the odd guitar solo by Elliott Randall, who's work here sounds like something Terje Rypdal would write while in the grip of a Scandinavian winter (his lead on 'Recent' is particularly doom-laden). I thought guitar solos didn't exist anymore; I certainly wouldn't have thought I'd have to go to a down-tempo album to find a really good one. And who knew my girl Lauren had such a voice! Alin must be proud to have such a group of musicians bringing his songwriting to life.
Music for everday.......2005-08-12
This album is defiantly a must have for basically anyone due to the nature of the tracks shifting to fit almost anyone that enjoys music for what it should be. Metropolitan has melodies to fit into a peaceful soothing setting, which is great for any day when you need to relax. The energy put into this album has been very well represented due to the beautiful production styles of Wade Alin. The singer (Lauren Cheatham) pours her soul into the lyrics and does an effective job of pulling you into the music itself. The musical guests make for even more diversity throughout the album. The album inspires the listener to see that there is a lot more to music then face value. This is the finest production and album as a whole I've experienced this whole year.
Moves the earth and the sky.......2005-08-11
Metropolitan is truly an amazing work of art. Lauren Cheatham brings new meaning to "artist" and "vocalist". The smooth tones in what is labeled "electronic music" complement Cheatham's voice. Atomica may be the new sound of the millennium.
Atomica.......2005-08-11
Fans of Bjork, Portishead, or any kind of music that's been described as "downtempo" will be in audio-heaven with this release. "Metropolitan" manages to sound somber without being depressing, intelligent without being pretentious, and relaxing without being boring and forgettable. While the programming and musicianship is top-notch throughout the entire album, Lauren Cheatham is truly the main attraction. Her soft, beautiful voice fits the tone and mood of the songs perfectly.
I'm having a hard time putting to words how much I like this album, so I'll leave it at this: "Metropolitan" is nothing short of stunning. If this isn't the best album of 2005, it's definitely in the top five.

Another great record from David Rodriguez.......2006-12-29
You can find out more about David and his releases at at his website, which you can get through google. Sadly most are no longer readily available and I've only heard a couple. This record is very good, but not quite as consistently good as "The True Cross" which was a solo live performance from 1990. Highlights for me are Michoacan, Chitarrista Cieco, and Out of Range. Great songwriting, guitar playing and singing and great, spare accompaniment.
The Power and the Majesty.......2006-10-11
I can't believe this has been out since Jan. and nobody's reviewed it. I heard the cut "Michoacan" on our excellent community radio (krfc Fort Collins, CO) and immediately ordered the CD. Rodriguez is the new, great singer/songwriter. He inherits the mantle of Townes VanZandt and Dylan. His voice is strong and, dare I say it, happy, with a tone that hints of a well known fellow Texan singer. His guitar is quite interesting. Great, great lyrics. I have two questions: why can't I find anything else by David and how did he put this together in the Netherlands with Dutch musicians? I remember a reviewer of Dylan's "Boots of Spanish Leather" writing something like "Nobody can say 'Barcelona' like Bob Dylan." No body says "Michoacan" like David Rodriguez. Comparison intentional. Buy this. Not a clinker on the CD.
