Sublime, sensual, ecstatic.......2007-05-08
As much as I love Tim Buckley's first two albums, this is where he really finds his true voice, heading into jazz territory with an open heart. From the first note to the last, his emotions are naked, deep, filled with yearning & loss & soaring joy & regret, often at the same time. And that magnificent voice! It plumbs the depths, it touches the skin of heaven, and it conveys the experience of several lifetimes as it caresses & shapes each word like a master sculptor. The music itself is a match for its singer, melodic & inventive, surprising the listener with sudden unexpected changes & shifts. But for all the experimentation going on, the songs themselves never get lost. This is a timeless work, one to be heard again & again -- most highly recommended!
"I was lost without a song, without a melody".......2007-04-07
To paraphrase those makeshift obituaries to sensitive artists who Died Too Young, Tim Buckley was not Too Good for This World, he was never of it in the first place. Transcendental without being part of the faddish hippydom of the late '60s, Buckley's music was an excuse for his voice to float above the free (but never "Free") jazz and psychedelic blues of his and his collaborators' instruments.
"Happy Sad" can glibly be called "The most beautiful album ever made", although this statement should not hide the fact that it really is just that. Lost in a reverie of free-flowing thoughts, Buckley removed himself from the psychedelic pastiche of "Goodbye And Hello", and thus from just about everyone else writing songs meant to fit into the 3:30 minute grooves of the commercial record format. The songs are a true mirror to jazz, insofar as the obvious painstaking nature of the musical composition is made to seem so carefree by dint of Buckley's rapturous lyrics. The songs could be about sex, or love, or the heroin that was to claim Buckley's life some years later, or just about the crashing waves on the beach that close "Love from Room 109..."
Buckley never had much commercial success in his lifetime or any of the others that followed. Rather than lamenting the fact that someone so talented should be written off by so many even now as a "troubadour", we should just appreciate these extraterrestrial notes from a man who somehow never existed at all.
So Beautiful It Hurts.......2007-01-15
The story of Tim Buckley has a disquieting familiarity - dead at 28 he had already been through the classic cycle: raw prodigy, hot property, creative disillusionment, unpopular experimentation, and bitter confrontations with industry executives. Of the many gems produced during his brief, intense career - Happy Sad shines most brightly.
Buckley emerged fully formed as a folk singer, one of many at the time. With a 12-string guitar that rang out lush and strong, and an astounding voice dancing far and wide across a 4-octave range, he made for a very compelling one-man show. Buckley's voice was slightly reminiscent of Steve Winwood's; it had that same choirboy spirituality. Some of his high notes were simply chilling.
By the time he made Happy Sad, Buckley was looking for a milieu that melded jazz and folk - no easy trick, but he manages it flawlessly here. This CD feels very integrated, the otherworldly sensibility flows seamlessly from one track to the next. That said, he is clearly taking creative risks, jazzy detours that did not endear him to his folk following. Using his voice both as a storytelling vehicle and improvisational instrument, Buckley jams with the other players, most notably the ethereal vibes of David Friedman.
In Happy Sad, Tim Buckley seems bound and determined to avoid generating hits suited for airplay, almost as if he is deliberately thwarting studio executives. This was his most commercially successful project, however, that is not saying a great deal.
Find a rainy day and a person you love, nail the door shut. There is a special magic in this CD that doesn't come along very often. While Buzzin' Fly and Gypsy Woman stand out, every moment of Happy Sad has something wonderful to tell you.
It Takes You Places You've Never Been Before.......2006-07-28
The absolute summit of Tim Buckley's career. This is the most haunting, lovely, stunning album ever. It will take you to places you've never been before and leave you wanting more.
Haunting Best Work By Best Buckley.......2005-12-17
It is a tragedy that the late Tim Buckley is not more widely appreciated. He has become most well known as the late Jeff Buckley's father, and, not to disparage the very talented son, the father is the true genius of the clan. "Happy/Sad" is, perhaps, the most fully realized of Tim Buckley's works; meltingly melancholy and wistful. It opens with "Strange Feelin'", whose opening chords echo Miles Davis on "Kinda Blue". The nod to jazz is only the beginning of a diverse musical tapestry. The vocal on "Strange Feelin'" reveal Buckley at his mind-numbing, note-bending best. "Buzzin' Fly" is next, a lovely, lilting, ode to new love. "Dream Letter" is an achingly regretful tale of a son never known, now grown. "Love From Room 109..." is a most remarkable piece, both mournful and hopeful. It flows through four distinct parts in its 10+ minutes, the sound of the surf providing a unifying aural backdrop. There are very few songs like "Love From...". The sprse, understated instrumentation is perfect to the mood of "Happy/Sad", and allows the instrument of Buckley's voice to be the focus. Vibraphone, marimba, 12-string and (occasional) electric guitar, congas, and bass (acoustic and electric) are artfully arranged, and a testimony to Elektra Records skill with folk and jazz. If you've never given Tim Buckley a serious listen or only know him by way of his son, start with "Happy/Sad", then go on to "Lorca", "Star Sailor" and by that time maybe the long missed "Blue Afternoon" will be out on CD.

Guy with a Guitar.......2005-12-12
I have been a fan of Andy Mac's for a while and I am so happy that this CD has finally come out. Andy has poppy, yet introspective lyrics mixed with an ecclectic mix of pianos and guitar making him a cross between the Beatles and Jason Maraz--only he's better than any other guy with a guitar out there right now.
Give the music a try, it'll set your toes a-tapping and erase any shyness you have about singing along.
great Eagles type cd!.......2005-12-08
Any fan of the rock band the Eagles, will love this great set of tunes. Featuring great harmony vocals, nice west coast pop tunes done very very well. One of the nicest surprises I've heard this year!

Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09
Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.
It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.
The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

Pop and rock and creative genius.......2004-08-31
I absolutely love this album! It's so great to hear a band who is actually into having fun, rather than being pensive and moody. I've seen them play live a few times and they're incredible onstage, and they're actually really accomplished. Phil (the bass player) is a classically trained cellist who has been touring with Al Green this summer, and David (the guitar player) is a creative fiction writer who has a short story picked by Dave Eggers in "2003 Best American Non-Required Reading." I love that they can be so versatile and that they actually have musical talent and writing talent. Their melodies are incredibly catchy, and they have Beach Boys/Fountains of Wayne harmonies. My favorite songs are "Mix Tape Song," "Motorcycle" and "Stephanie." You have to see them live, or at least get this CD!!
Great first step.......2004-06-05
A great first album. It's bands like this one who will bring back some punch and vitality to music. In a time when 'pop' is often a three-letter four-letter word, Tennis Pro shows time and again on this album that they've got the hooks...and they're not afraid to use them. Also, the thing practically screams summer.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful album! A treasure, one of my favorites.......2000-12-13
What fantastic, beautiful, powerful music! This album, together with Ökrös' Transylvanian Village Music (on Rounder, 1999), (it's at least as good as that one, if not better) have left me enthralled with this rich tradition and searching for more. The soulfulness of the melodies and rhythms is intoxicating... This is traditional folk, but the tradition is vibrantly alive -- this compelling music has no need for any added enhancements from the latest world-music pop trends. There are haunting slow sections and wonderful pulsing, propelling dance tunes. The album's title expresses the deep emotions of sorrow and joy that run all through the music, epitomized in the title track, a piece traditionally played for escorting a bride, full of the feelings of a young woman leaving her home to begin an unknown, new life. Csík Zenekar, participants in the Hungarian folk revival movement, were honored as 'Young Masters of Folk Art' and 'Eminent Art Ensemble' in 1992. They display mastery, knowledge and love of the pieces they found from sources including field recordings of the village bands of Transylvania, which they pass on to us with passionate spirit and deep conviction. I only wish more of this kind of music were more widely available - there's a lot of it with no regular U.S. distribution. Good thing we've got the Net!

Product Description
With his sophomore CD "Happy, Sad and Satisfied", a tribute to the American Standard, critically acclaimed Jazz Vocalist Beat Kaestli captures the mood of classic songs in a contemporary setting. In a time where aged Rock stars are recording Jazz Standards and record labels recycle the era of Big Band singers like Sinatra and Bennett, Beat Kaestli stands out as a unique and true Jazz Vocalist. His versatility as a singer only adds to his charm, lending him a contemporary yet never overly commercial touch. Beat has the ability to take a song from Baroque Aria into Jazz and then turn around and mold a popular Jazz Standard into a groovy R&B tune. This ability to create something new and fresh out of the old and established stems form his universal sense of music and his understanding of Jazz, truly the music of invention and change.
Customer Reviews:
A cynic doesn't stand a chance........2006-01-08
I melted into this CD. Harry Connick Jr. should have this in his collection. Beat Kaestli is a native of Switzerland, now living in NYC, who has taken American jazz standards and imprinted them with his own enveloping, seductive vibe. His voice is satin and moonlight. Kaestli could ask me to rob a bank, and if he sang the request, I'd be out the door with a stocking cap and .357 magnum.
He opens with Hayward and Gershwin's "Summertime," breaking it down to just gentle percussion and his warm voice. The song slowly builds, adding electric piano. The tempo builds from a smooth, shuffling beat to a wild, summer frenzy. This steadily rising approach has a breathtaking effect and is the perfect introduction to the CD.
Kaestli covers Cole Porter with a sparking and snappy version of "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To" and a wild musical abandon approach on "So in Love." His version of "My Funny Valentine" has a funk/soul flavor. I'd like to know how he'd sound doing soul classics.
Adding French to the mix with "Les Feuilles Mortes/Autumn Leaves" only adds more steam to the project. Kaestli is the master of quiet elegance and has created a gloriously romantic album. A cynic doesn't stand a chance.
