Eva Luna
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Like some of its labelmates, Moonshake draws inspiration from German art-rockers Can, who used their home studio to explore the transcendent possibilities of long drones and simple, jazzy rhythms. Eva Luna is the band's first U.S. release, a wonderfully eclectic one, dabbling in gothic grooves ("City Poison"), cosmic freakouts ("Spaceship Earth"), and industrial chaos ("Wanderlust"). The only constants in Moonshake's distinctive sound are rhythmic intensity and a playfulness evidenced by all manner of studio trickery. --Jim DeRogatis

Customer Reviews:
Authentic Beethoven from veteran conductor.......2007-06-27
Even though Grammophone Magazine did not see it fit to rank Harnoncourt's Beethoven Symphonies as among the 'best 5', I myself rank it before some of those chosen by Grammphone, notably David Zinman.
Harnoncourt's interpretation of Beethoven with his period instruments is so striking and full of character that you need not question 'what is Beethoven like'?
The concertos may have soloists varying in calibre, but the conducting and orchestration are nonetheless terrific. Take the 3rd movement of the No. 1 Piano Concerto, for example. Harnoncourt articulates such dynamics that the interpretation is at once authenticity and moving. The string section simply blow the listener off, even if the pianist Aimard isn't really the true Beethoven interpretor like Yefim Bronfmann for David Zinman, let alone Wilhelm Kempff before.
The ECO under Harnoncourt played elegantly, heroically and dramatically. The No. 5 Symphony is such a stately yet dramatic account that even with the fiery tempo like Zinman, could not be easily surpassed in terms of both excitement and depth.
An Exciting, Memorable Collection Of Most Of Beethoven's Orchestral Works From Harnoncourt & COE.......2007-05-14
This 14 CD box set is truly a magnificient collection uniting virtually all of Beethoven's orchestral works performed by a single orchestra and conductor: Chamber Orchestra of Europe and Nikolaus Harnoncourt. It is magnificient not only for its breadth and depth, but more importantly, for its overall quality, since many of these recordings can be regarded as definitive recordings of these Beethoven pieces, which were recorded between the years 1990 and 2003. One notable set of highlights is Harnoncourt's mesmerizing, period instrument practice-informed recordings of all of Beethoven's symphonies, which have already received ample critical and popular acclaim for being among the finest Beethoven symphony cycles ever recorded. Another fascinating recording is his critically acclaimed recording of Beethoven's Missa Solemnis. Distinguished violinist Gidon Kremer collaborated successfully with Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe in an inspiring, intriguing period instrument-influenced account of the Beethoven Violin Concerto. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard is well represented in relatively recent, critically acclaimed recordings of the Beethoven Piano Concertos, the Beethoven Triple Concerto (accompanied by violinist Thomas Zehetmair and cellist Clemens Hagen), and two other works for piano and orchestra. For those unfamiliar with Nikolaus Harnoncourt and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, this box set is a most impressive introduction, and one which I recommend highly.
a very solid collection.......2007-03-30
This is a very solid collection that collects all of Harnoncourt's interpretations of Beethoven's symphonies, concertos and such. This seems to collect his best recordings into one package.
The music is astounding, from what I can tell and any fan of Beethoven would do well to pick up this set if they don't have the individual recordings by Harnoncourt already.
This set is specifically aimed at the people who are getting into Beethoven and want his material or to people who want to start collecting Harnoncourts recordings of Beethoven.
Obviously if you have Harnoncourt's recordings in part or in whole, this set might be a bit pricey but for those getting into his interpretations then this would be the perfect way to do so.
It looks like you get his complete Beethoven work and for the price it is relatively cheap.

Masterpiece, though not for the weak of ear.......2003-11-11
Wow. I had been a college radio DJ for 3 years, constantly listening to and reviewing new and different alternative music when I heard this album. I had to listen to it almost daily for a good six months before I could start feel I had heard the whole thing. Such are the layerings of music here.
Moonshake's first full length cd is their masterpiece, and their only full length album to feature the writing/performing talents of both Margaret Fielder and Dave Callahan. On Eva Luna, hers are groovy, trancey, whispery songs that make you want to gyrate; his are disdainful yet brilliant social commentaries, usually bombastic. (Margaret went on after '94's Big Good Angel EP to form the band Laika with Moonshake producer Guy Fixen.)
Callahan's ultra dry vocals do take a getting used to, but are definitely great.
This CD is a collage of muses ranging from Can, PiL, Silver Apples, while mixing in occasional jazz instruments (flute, sax) without ever being jazzy (though later compositions would.)
Highly recommended, though do give it several listens. Margaret actually suggests listening to it with a quality pair of headphones to hear everything.
Sex Pistols with Bongos.......2002-02-01
genre-bending rampages through urban decadence and self agrandizement/hatred. some smoothe ecstatic jams riddled with scrapingly loud guitar work. at least three classics, here, that almost sound like different bands, but the whole thing works as a unit. truly, one of a kind. the girl, Fiedler, sounds seductive as she whispers incendiary lyrics, and the guy, Calahan, is perpetually upset (sort of an articulate Sid Viscious).
WANDERLUST starts like a theme to a shark movie including something that sounds like rain, but better. the listener is immediately subjected to Calahan's mood swings as he describes the nobility of being homeless and lapses into a scathing criticism of modern society.
TAR BABY oscillates between Fiedler's sexy babble and loud noise crashes, after which everyone kind of takes a breather before starting up again. brilliantly quirky
LITTLE THING is a warm glowing sound collage that flies off the disc. It's detailed bass line and progressive scales make this a sensual dreamscape. It leads you head-on into the angry wall called CITY POISON which dismembers and disembowels any but the most environmentally conscious and socially responsible. CITY POISON is a classic song for anyone justifiably P-Oed at anything. It's impossibly critical, hilariously livid, and surprisingly accurate.
SWEETHEART is the first Moonshake song I ever heard. I still come back to it years later for it's sensual splicing of grinding guitar, sweet talk and bump & grind rythm. It has the signature "ringy-sounding" guitar, I think, horn samples, and spacey drops that set these artists apart.
SPACESHIP EARTH is beautiful noise that will drive away your annoying relatives during the holidays, but bathes you in a hyped-up kitchy version of Sonic Youth's sound collages.
I highly recommend Moonshake's "First" ep which is hard to find, and "Secondhand Clothes" taken from the original Eva Luna album. "Big Good Angel" is good enough to be an extension of this album into even more ecclectic subject matter including seances and child protective services! SEANCE is a personal favorite about frustrated man trying to make "inner contact" with his deceased spouse and getting ripped off by a charlatan psychic in the process. WHO WRITES SONGS ABOUT THAT?
Different, Very Different.......1998-05-17
The Miracle Whip beats and softly surreal organ grinding melts around the alternating vocals of Margaret Fiedler and David Callahan. Bitter anger mixes with gentle confusion to jarring effect. Many of these songs (and the transitions between them) would be head-scratchers if they weren't so playful. There's definitely nothing else like Moonshake.

Customer Reviews:
An Opera That Deserves Better.......2004-02-02
The world of opera would certainly not be the same if Arrigo Boito chose a different career path. Boito played a significant role in the revision of Verdi's SIMON BOCANEGRA and wrote the libretti for OTELLO and FALSTAFF. Boito also wrote the libretto for Ponchielli's LA GIOCONDA. Obviously Boito knew what could work on stage as OTELLO and LA GIOCONDA's success proves, but as a composer, Boito was less successful. As a composer, was a "one hit wonder" with his opera MEFISTOFELE. The work is not widely performed, though some major opera companies do revive it from time to time.
The opera is based on the legend of Faust, and shares some characteristics of Gounod's FAUST but the story also has differences, specifically the inclusion of the Elena portion of the story. The score of the opera has beautiful and powerful moments, especially the choral pieces. In this recording, Samuel Ramey plays the role of Mefistofele, and he handles the role with power and tremendous vocal ability. There are moments of sheer beauty in his singing that gives his character a certain deceptive nature, which is in keeping with a being like the devil, but it can at times also have an eerie quality which is also appropriate. Both Placido Domingo and Eva Marton are excellent as Faust and Margherita/Elena respectively, but the real superstars of this recording are The Hungarian State Orchestra and the Hungarian Opera Chorus. Under the direction of Guiseppe Patane, the orchestra and chorus make this recording exceptional.
A lukewarm two thumbs up.......1999-03-07
A good recording; but why did we need it? There can be no competition with the magnificent Mefistofele of Cezare Siepi on the recording also featuring such luminaries as Mario del Monaco and Renata Tebaldi.
