degree of focus

Editorial Reviews
Dave Goff, Indiego Music Center
"The mood is dark; verges on shoegazer... a strong synth-pop disc that fans of the Cure/Depeche Mode should love."

Nessim Halioua, Left Off The Dial, www.leftoffthedial.com
"Makes you wonder why people fall in love (at all)... you feel despair with every cringe of your body..."

Album Description
A continuation of the infinite cycle, twilight music for rainy drives and break-ups. Love without safety-belts: your heart through the glass at 75 mph. "degree of focus": Recorded by a guy with a guitar, some digital equipment, and a home studio, these songs are confessions of lost loves and broken hearts. The album is a release point for the things that were never said but should have been talked about long ago. They're not perfect, and they aren't trying to be. Currently, the starfirefive has become a two person collaborative and is further developing the scope of its sound: still not perfect, still not trying to be, still singing songs of stars, of life support and balancings.

It doesn't happen very often these days that you find a great dumpling. Pork and spiced just right. The same goes for love. That's what makes this CD right on.

There's the anticipation, there's the memory, the memory of your mother and the time she took you to Hushang for the first time and you had a Pu Pu Platter and the best was of course the dumpling.

This CD is about the trip to finding that love. From seeing the intended, believing the intended is going to be constant never ending producer of that great feeling, and then the anguish of realizing that the kitchen is filled with a bunch of Mexicans using tortillas to wrap the dumplings.

Somehow the track 11 is the answer to the quandry.

Listen to it and it'll all make sense.

5 out of 5 stars born to stare at stars on ceiling walls.......2002-05-06

not long ago, for a fleeting moment, i was happy. since then, i have spent countless hours trying to recapture that moment. it's on the horizon. always in sight, never in reach. i fear that i will waste a lifetime searching... maybe it's closer than it seems-maybe not. maybe it's my degree of focus.

degree of focus captures, qutie beautifully, this familar struggle. slivers of something familiar grab your attention, only to disappear and reemerge as something new, something foreign, probably something you've been searching for...

five stars-starfirefive!

5 out of 5 stars 'visceral third degree'.......2002-04-19

Raw emotionality bleeding through all our best tourniquets, you clamp on the smile but the stains show through. This is everything you wanted to say but couldn't, the kind of cd you buy and then leave on the doorstep of that certain someone without a note or a name. Visceral and burning with an aching sadness and a sweet nostalgia all blended in together. Sometimes harmonious, sometimes discordant, always real and honest and pure.

5 out of 5 stars best when played alone.......2002-03-03

like wandering an empty house asking questions and proposing answers only for yourself, yet never reaching a total conclusion. a day of reflection complete with rain, dueling voices putting doubt and hope in mind, recollections of past events that incur second guessing, and thoughts of events that haven't happened yet.
