Waking Up

Editorial Reviews
Ken Cormier, 11/2001
"Let me first say this is an INCREDIBLE album. ... this CD is one epic adventure! "

Michael Allison, 9/2001
"The vocals of this amazing artist only give the great lyrics an even more powerful presence."

Album Description
Following an exceptional response from her first CD, Monique has completed her second release entitled, "Waking Up." The bold piano-based music is often very dark, written about topics that have impacted her life. She does not hold back anything on this release and is not afraid to confront the painful experiences she has lived. From sultry soft vocals the listener is often, without warning, shocked by sudden transitions that capture the essence of Monique’s life-experience.

Martina McBride has long been a champion of music as social consciousness, particularly for abused women ("Independence Day") and children. On Waking Up Laughing, her ninth album and the follow-up to Timeless, her platinum-selling album of country classics, she advances the theme while expanding it. While two songs explore the issue of unwed mothers (particularly the exquisite "Love Land," which closes the album), and another, "Beautiful Again," touches on child sexual abuse, her overall repertoire embraces the wholeness of family, and of standing strong together in the face of adversity and defeat. Musically, McBride has always proved to be an elegant thorn--her song selection is often inspired (and here, she co-wrote three tunes, including the skyscraping single "Anyway"), but she has tended to use her huge, ride-the-wave soprano full-tilt, without employing the subtle shadings that would make her even more emotionally resonant. On Waking Up Laughing she seems to have worked on the problem, yet in her second foray as solo producer, she still tends to gild the lily instrumentally--inflating string bridges between choruses, for example, or loading the opening country-pop track, "If I Had Your Name," with a Southern-rock guitar break, a listen-to-me fiddle showcase, a Celtic guitar intro, and a close that brings to mind George Harrison's sitar in play-it-backward mode. That said, she makes fine use of what sounds like a black female choir on the uplifting "For These Times," and wisely keeps the haunting break-up ballad "Tryin' to Find a Reason" (with Keith Urban's harmony vocals and guitar solo) lean and affecting. As McBride works to refine her pastiche of creativity, commerciality, and social awareness, she slyly takes more chances than one might think, all the while rallying old fans and making new ones. --Alanna Nash

Album Description

After 16 million in sales and 22 top 10 singles, some artists might be afraid to tinker with success and tempt fate. But not Martina McBride. Following up on her platinum-selling Timeless album, a poignant collection of country classics representing her first effort as solo producer, she's at the production helm again for her ninth studio release, Waking Up Laughing. Since her debut in 1992, McBride has maintained a consistent presence on the country charts, including six number one singles, and has also enjoyed crossover success in the pop and adult contemporary genres. Always striving for new artistic heights, McBride is breaking new ground by serving as producer, writer and artist for her latest album, which includes three songs she co-wrote with the Warren Brothers and other top songwriters.

5 out of 5 stars Sparkling melodies and lyrics on Martina's newest CD !.......2007-07-05

I first became acquainted with Martina McBride's beautifully expressive voice through listening to her sing "Valentine" on one of Jim Brickman's albums... Instantly smitten, I began buying her music and have been happily listening every since then... This newest CD has a wealth of good music... with the incredibly lyrical "Beautiful Again", "House Of A Thousand Dreams" and "Anyway"... as with any new CD, I kept waiting for the few songs that I didn't care for... but this never happens to me with Martina's insightful song selection and soaring vocals -- I find myself listening to this album for hours at a time... and know that it is indeed a golden nugget for Martina to cherish always...! Most impressive A++++++!

5 out of 5 stars Martina!.......2007-06-27

I just love this CD! Martina McBride has appropriately named this CD "Waking Up Laughing". After listening to it I feel upbeat and happy. She's the best to come along in many years!

5 out of 5 stars Great songs.......2007-06-27

I love Martina McBride. This cds have lots of good songs. It's a must buy for any fan of hers. She's awesome in her concert I just went to a few weeks ago...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant CD !!.......2007-06-23

There are some artists whose albums I buy without even hearing a note. Brad Paisley, Tim McGraw and especially TRACE ADKINS, TRAVIS TRITT and RANDY TRAVIS. There are very few female artists who I buy as I usually only end up liking 2-3 tracks. Martina McBride is changing that and becoming one of those artists who I automatically buy.

Here in NZ we don't have country radio stations so we don't get to hear new tracks and artists unless we do so online (which I do). In some ways this is great because we don't hear songs thrashed until all the meaning and life have been wrung out of them.

Having said all that, Waking up crying is a great CD. I played it through 4 times without skipping through any tracks. I loved every track. Although 1 or 2 were a bit "poppy" it just shows Martina's versatility. My all time favourites are I'll still be me, Love land, House of a thousand dreams and of course the track Anyway which gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.

5++ for this album which will not disappoint new and old fans

4 out of 5 stars Solid McBride Release.......2007-06-21

Martina McBride has become one of the most dependable artists in country music, and "Waking Up Laughing" continues her streak of releasing enjoyable, entertaining records.

She ranges from sentimental love songs to heartbreak songs to survivor songs, and maintains her soulful, powerful voice on everyone of them.

"Anyway," "Tryin'To Find A Reason," "Cry Cry," and "House of a Thousand Dreams" should not disappoint too many, if any, of her fans.

Album Description

Got you on my mind is the collaboration between chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux and harmonica virtuoso/ guitarist William Galison, with whom she has toured extensively in recent years. On Ms. Peyroux's first recording since Deamland, Madeleine and William cover a wide variety of tunes, from a Josephine Baker classic through tunes made famous by Willy Dixon, Stevie Wonder and John Lennon, as well as three delightful original compositions. The accompanying musicians are stars in their own right, including Bob Dylan's bassist Tony Garnier and Saturday Night Live's drummer Shawn Pelton, and there is a delightful cameo by none other than Carly Simon. To many of Madeleine's fans, Got You On My Mind represents her exquisite singing at its most natural and unconstrained -- in an informal, musical context close to her roots and to her heart. What comes across most strongly from this CD however, is the amazing musical chemistry between these two extraordinary artists.

Customer Reviews:

This is a wonderful cd and a nice addition to my collection. I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars fun stuff.......2007-03-09

These musicians clearly are in synch with each other on this very good album. For fans of Madeleine, this is an example of her singing in a very relaxed style. Not quite as intense as her more mature work, yet beautiful nonetheless in a timeless manner that her voice communicates so easily. All in all, sweet harmony.

5 out of 5 stars Her best, so far..........2007-06-20

On her third album, melodies abound from this precocious singer/songwriter. This record is a little more pop-oriented than her sophomore effort, and she continues to grow and mature as an artist. There are a number of songs that are strong enough to be radio singles, including the title track "Waking Up", "The Kingdom", "Change", and "Something There." Other songs showcasing strong choruses are "When You Love Someone", and the melodic, piano-driven "Let Your Light Shine." This is Bethany's best yet, but with her talent, she'll probably eclipse even this effort in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!!!.......2007-05-17

5 out of 5 stars Can't stop listening.......2007-04-15

When I heard Bethany Dillon play live for the first time at a tiny gig with Shaun McDonald in Tacoma, Washington, I sang along to her every song. And now, with the release of "Waking Up," I can't help but keep singing along. Bethany's music is REAL, striking me with a heart-wretching reality--- reminding me to hang on to my Joy. The album titled song "Waking Up" reflects a dynamic relationship with God that is present in her debut album with "Beautiful". In Bethany's new cd you hear awe-struck, God affirming messages develop in her lyrics, voice, and talent as a strong Christian artist that began early on in her career. Its no wonder to see her three albums work to reveal the most miniscule wonders of God. I am ever-so greatful to hear living and inspired words embodied in Bethany Dillon's music.

5 out of 5 stars An All Around Triumph.......2007-04-09

Fans and critics alike have always been interested in the music of Bethany Dillon. From a young age she brought songs that were mature and easy to listen to without being bland or cheesy. Now 18, Bethany Dillon brings an album that steps far beyond the expectations of her listeners and wakes fans and critics alike to God, life, and love.

The album opens with the strong single, The Kingdom. With its catchy chorus, strong vocals, and stirring lyrics, The Kingdom opens the album in a way that creates interest for the rest of the album. The next song, Come Find Me, starts with a beautiful piano intro and builds to present a soothing song about the redemption of God based on a passage in Deuteronomy. Following Come Find Me is the title track, Waking Up, which holds upbeat, energetic lyrics speaking of the joys of waking up to God. Something There showcases Bethany's vocal abilities in a song with energy. Let Your Light Shine begins with calm vocals accompanied by piano and ends with Bethany's voice accompanied by a church choir in a prayerful song of worship. Change is a song of thanksgiving that brings just the right amounts of energy and calm to the elements of praise. Top of the World is an energetic song that fans of pop music will enjoy and shows her vocal abilities. In Tell Me, Bethany challenges herself vocally, enhancing the song's power. Are You Sure? brings a slow, thoughtful love song into the mix of more relaxed upbeat songs. When You Love Someone, featured also on the Bridge to Terabithia soundtrack, is an upbeat radio-friendly but highly relatable song about letting someone you love down and how to fix it. You Could Be the One follows with a vocally-interesting love song. Beggar's Heart, written while Bethany was on a trip to India, speaks of the way God changes the heart and feeds it truth and leaves the Christian wanting more. You Are On Our Side, the final track, is a stirring song about the true character of Jesus. It is the most impressing song about who Jesus truly is that has been recorded in a long time.

Overall, Waking Up is an amazing album, full of impressing vocals, lyrics, and music. For the fans of Bethany Dillon, it is another impressive chapter of her career. For potential fans, it is a prime example of what Bethany Dillon is capable of and where her heart is. This is one album that everyone should listen to. There is a song on it for everyone-- young and old, fans and critics alike.

4 out of 5 stars so different from your typical bryan adams album.......2007-06-30

this is a great rock n roll album. It is a departure from the other bryan adams' stuff i have. It has more rock ballads and out and out rock

4 out of 5 stars Great Music For Good Times.......2007-02-06

Wow,that is pretty much all I can say after listening to this CD.The songwriting on here is absolutely amazing. In fact I came real close to giving this a 5 star review (which I very rarely give) it really is that good.
Bryan Adams has the perfect voice for good time rock and roll, you won't find any show offs in this band either, every instrument fits the songs perfectly as does Adams' voice
The CD starts off strong with 'Is Your Mama Gonna Miss Ya' and just stays strong throughout, sure there are some hits that you've heard over and over like 'Do I Have To Say The Words' and (everything I do) I Do It For You,and Can't Stop This Thing We Started, but I honestly believe it is the songs that didn't get as much airplay that make this a 'must have' CD...I truly can't recommend this highly enough...the lyrics are cleaver and it's obvious thought went into them,my favorite song on here is 'There Will Never Be Another Tonight' but really every song is a classic and deserves a good listen...I can't end this review without mentioning the producer 'Robert John Mutt Lange' who definitely put his touch on this CD (he was the genius behind 'Highway to hell' and 'pyromania' not to mention most of the 'shania twain albums' in fact on most of the songs here you can almost hear Def Leppard doing these songs,no the music isn't nearly as heavy as Def Leppard but the vocal style of Bryan Adams sounds very very close to Joe Elliot of Def Leppard...this CD ROCKS!!!

The Upside - Every single song, the production is top notch, and the band and Bryan himself know how to play perfectly to a song rather then show off,the songwriting is the real star here,Bryan Adams is a master and most anyone in the industry could learn a thing or two from him

The Downside - There really isn't any,if I would have one small comment it would be that at 15 songs the CD does run a bit long but with songs this good you don't really feel bored, most other artists if they were to release 15 songs it would put you to sleep, but Bryan pulls it off

The Bottom Line - If you love good time music, stuff that you can dance to and smile this is for you...I recommend it very highly...run out and buy this, especially at this price you won't regret it..donutman says so!!!

5 out of 5 stars Waking up the Neighbours.......2006-03-26

This album is one of the all time classics, and when you listen to it you will see why, almost every song is awsome. Mutt Langue, hot off producing Def Leppard's Hysteria, took the Def Leppard sound he helped create and mixed it with Bryan Adams to create a studio album that Adams has not come anywhere near too since quality wise, pitty really.

4 out of 5 stars bryan's best of the '90's.......2005-05-10

This has to be along with 1984's Reckless, one of Bryan Adams'
best albums. This album includes the super smash hit single of
1991 Everything i do i do it for you, still to this day one of
the most popular love songs ever written. But this also has some
great rockers too, such as Can't stop this thing we started,There will never be another tonight, Hey honey,im packing
you in and All i want is you. This was the last great album by
B.A. after this his songwriting and music started going downhill
and he has never been able to recapture the magic from this golden timeframe.

5 out of 5 stars Bryan Adams' Last Great Album Until ROOM SERVICE.......2004-06-01

WAKING UP THE NEIGHBOURS is the last great album that Bryan Adams did until ROOM SERVICE. It sounds a lot like Def Leppard (he used that band's producer, "Mutt" Lange, for this one), but somewhat earthier. This album contains plenty of great rockers, but also increases his ballad quotient. His next couple of albums would turn him into a fairly faceless adult contemporary artist, but here he was still good for some great field-day-ready rockers.

5 out of 5 stars all encompassing best of.......2006-03-10

this best of really gives the listener all they need to hear to know that this band probably was the most underrated punk/powerpop band of its time.on a parr with ramones releases of the day.in fact, they played with the ramones at a gig or two at the world renown punk club cbgb's in nyc.without a doubt, the best band to come out of toronto canada in the mid to late seventies.

5 out of 5 stars It's great.......2002-12-07

I have listened to the Diodes since their first album. If my house was burning, and I could save either this album or my family....

I would grab the album. sorry, kids.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this album.......1999-10-07

Anyone with an interest in late 70's punk should pick up this album. The Diodes were hugely influencial to the Toronto punk scene, but have generally been overlooked. This compilation may change that, as this 25 song collection is nothing short of punk brilliance. The lyrics are fairly intellegent, the songs are well- written, and the performances are hard and tight. A very good album, from a very good and underappreciated band.

5 out of 5 stars Experience the raw roots of punk rock!.......1999-05-04

Listening to this disk took me back to the live performances of the Diodes that I witnessed in Welland, Ontario, Canada in 1979 and again in London, Ontario, Canada in 1981. The force of Paul Robinson's vocals in Red Rubber Ball, Child Star and Shapes of Things to Come is balanced by the melodies of Tired of Waking Up Tired, Teenage Nation, Photographs From Mars, Jenny's In A Sleep World and Weekend. The pounding beat of John Catto's guitar and Ian Mackay's bass provide the perfect background for Robinson's unpolished but forceful delivery of the lyrics. The raw energy of this group represents the early roots of punk, when making simple, great music was more important than the physical uniqueness of the musicians.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-03-13

This music is a throw back to the early roots of the punk rock and new vave movement. Raw music sung with a passion at the dawn of the disco age. A must in anyones collection of the music of the mid-70's. I used to own this on 8-track and have searched for the CD for the last 10 years. Unfortunatley these guys broke up before their music reached the recognition other artist of there time achieved. Great music from a time when music was testing the boundaries.

I totally disagree...when this album came out I played it more than when any of their others came out and I had bought each one as they came out. I love the whole album and think it is their best one. It isn't as commerical as the rest but so what. Hey George...this is an EXCELLENT album!

4 out of 5 stars A forgotten gem.......2006-06-13

Despite all the negative reviews, Waking Up is strangely a very listenable album, which grows on you with each repeated listening. Sure, it doesn't have the instant recognisable hits from previous albums, and many other tracks here, though catchy, seem somewhat lacklustre. You know, it's impossible to top Colour By Numbers and there are bound to be comparisons. I really love the inclusion of Love Is Love and The Dream, two of the most beautiful ballads Culture Club has ever recorded. Don't be put off by what you hear or read, this is an album worth keeping in your 80's and Culture Club collection.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2005-10-18

there is sopmething very sentimental about this CC record. It was the first record they released after CBN and i thought it was a nice follow up.
I loved the songs on this album especially the Medal Song and the war Song...

3 out of 5 stars Not as great as their other albums...........2005-10-09

When I got this album to listen to, I was kinda disappointed. It wasn't really that exciting to listen to like their other songs. I only ended up liking two songs in here. Dangerous Man is really good...I like the beats. Mistake No. 3 is a nice song too. I tried to listen to the cd more than once and it kinda work. Now I like Don't Talk About It and The War Song. I knew I should have gotten their other cd to listen to.

1 out of 5 stars I'm Waking Up To Forever Changes.......2004-09-11

At one time I was quick to defend Belle and Sebastian and their pretty and melodic 60's influenced sound, and I still admit that "If You're Feeling Sinister" is a fantastic album in much need of praise and admiration. Ripping into these scottish kids is like beating a maudlin introspective E.T. with his own tear stained diary. After this and "Jonathan David" however, I've come to one conclusion.
E.T. has had it coming a long time now.
This song is a ill conceived homage to "Forever Changes" by Love. Following the single, "Jonathan David" a sad knock off of "Odessey and Oracle" by the Zombies I start to question the significance of Belle and Sebastian. What are they now but mere caricatures of the music they listen to? What do they spend their time doing now?

I'm all for the worship of music, and I came to love Belle and Sebastian myself through my love for the same music they are currently knocking off, but there's a fine line between influence and flat out knock off.
I recomend that these scotts run out and buy themselves a copy of "Metal Machine Music" or SOMETHING to break them out of this deep rut of a career.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE EVERY SONG.......2003-11-21

Great single/EP... one of their best, I think. I'm Waking Up to Us is fantastic. I Love My Car is a great shift for them musically. Marx & Engles, classic B&S lyrics. I HIGHLY recomend this. A MUST have for a B&S fan or for anyone genuinly interested in getting into them. Why take an SSRI when you have new B&S to listen to?

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely essential.......2003-10-12

This EP packs more gorgeous harmony, lush instrumentation and charming lyrics into its 10 short minutes than most bands manage in a full album, if ever.

"Waking Up To Us" sounds a bit like a lost Roy Orbison/Phil Spector tune from the 60's, with its rich orchestration and Stuart's heart-thumping-on-sleeve vocal delivery. It's full of wonderful violin and oboe counter-melodies, and it wins my award for Best Use Of Bassoon In A Rock Song.

What if the Squirrel Nut Zippers covered the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows?" The result might sound a lot like "I Love My Car." I can't get its bouncy, swaggering horn melody out of my head. More wonderful, inscrutable Stuart lyrics here: "I love the rat who lives under the floor and makes his bed from novelettes." He's got triple the imagination of most songwriters.

"Marx and Engels" could hold its own with the best of "If You're Feeling Sinister." It's a warm, gentle piano tune, in which our hero's advances are rebuffed by that cute Communist Manifesto-reading riot grrl in the local laundrette.

I feel like all the previous B&S albums have been building toward this point. It's relaxed, whimsical, intimate and rich. You won't want to do without this disc.

5 out of 5 stars How Could it Be Any Less Than 5 Stars?.......2003-06-25

It's Belle & Sebastian... Need I say more?

...and if I do, than you're just not listening enough!

5 out of 5 stars in defense of i love my car.......2003-03-03

This is a great EP, and I agree with most of the reviews here. It starts off with "I'm Waking Up To Us" which is a song about the since departed and beautiful Isobel Campbell. As good as this song it, it is the third best song of a three-EP set. The second song "I Love My Car" has had pretty negative reviews here, but a song with a new orleans clarinet laden jazz bridge and daft lyrics with a nod to the Beach Boys and namely the rift between Mike Love and Brian Wilson (I love my Carl/I love my Brian/my Dennis and my Al/I could even find it in my heart to love Mike Love) has to be brilliant. "Marx and Engels" sounds like it could come straight from "If You're Feeling Sinister" but the sound is a little cleaner, although I think the weakest lyrically. The brilliance of the song still comes with Stu's arrangements and Isobel's countermelody which is actually a criticism of Karl Marx and Robert Engels (assumedly she is voicing the girl whom Stuart is talking about) shows the subtle brilliance one of the best contemporary bands.

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Great Message.......2004-06-04

Great new CD!! I bought it because I have been a fan of Stryper and drummer Robert Sweet for years. While Stryper's music was awsome in the 80's ...don't expect this CD to sound like Styper (and that's not a bad thing). Blissed has a very modern raw / hard sound. Don't let the song titles fool you... the song lyrics have a very positive message of hope. Robert Sweet's drum playing is better than ever. Check it out... you won't be dissapointed.
