Swirl
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Formed in the winter of 1991, Ashes evolved slowly through the 90s. Exploring music for its own sake, the band painstakingly developed its own rich repertoire of sound, developing synergies amongst its members, and a unique voice, with barely a concern for reaching a broad outside audience. Awakening from virtual obscurity, the band now finds a public eager to hear its sincere, unadulterated style which is complemented by the bands superb technical craftsmanship. Almost a decade in the making, Ashes is more than ready and capable of satisfying the most discriminating listener. Ashes has a distinctive, yet eclectic, style. References can be made quite fairly to early Pink Floyd, The Cure, Cocteau Twins, Beatles, This Mortal Coil, and Slowdive. Even so, the band rises above their influences, striking out into new territory all their own. And while a common thread runs through their music, these songwriters have an apparent aversion to repeating themselves or deriving ideas from any single genre. A hallmark of their new release, "Swirl," is its very diversity - one track reminds the listener of Tom Waits, the next hints at Aphex Twin. Even so, Ashes does an incredible job of keeping all of the pieces flowing, the diversity becoming one of the musics most refreshing aspects. BAND_MEMBERS: Charles Moss - guitar, vocals, other instruments Glenn Moss - guitar Vince Moss - drums Joe Schuppe - keyboards, vocals, other instruments also: Greg Martin, Trish McCoy, Anne Moss, Scott Pinneau, and Noy Sparks
Album Description
As a first album, "Swirl" is nothing less than monumental with something to offer everyone. It is diverse without being unfocused, fresh and classic. It captures moods and emotions that have become uncommon in the post-modern 1990s. Both with and without words, Swirl expresses the simple fact that contrived angst and obligatory cynicism are not all that todays music has to offer. Ashes music transcends todays suffering with its sweet melodies, complex moods and refreshingly honest approach.

With the sticky-sweet pop of Hanson all the rage commercially (and, in many corners, critically), their label tries again with Swirl 360, led by brothers Denny and Kenny Scott. Less Jackson 5 and more Cheap Trick--or at least Rick Springfield--Ask Anybody is nonetheless the kind of perfect summer radio music that's sure to hold its appeal through all four seasons. Songwriting collaborations with the likes of Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy, That Thing You Do!) and Ken Stringfellow (the Posies) lend an intriguing alt-rock credibility while helping ensure a high level of hook appeal. Go ahead--indulge. --Rickey Wright

From a 2006 Perspective..........2006-04-09
Always on the lookout for overlooked power pop discs, I picked this up as a bargain-bin experiment on the advice of one of the Amazon list-makers, and it's well worth whatever the used price is this month.
From a mid-00s perspective, the pop-group-of-the-nanosecond comparisons you'll read below are even more dated than they seem. Yes, the pop hooks stick out all over the place, but this is not the pure, icky bubblegum of Hanson. There's enough crunch in the guitars to put the power in this power pop. A clutch of tunes stand out, but "Rewind" has made it to the top of my most-played-list on iTunes.
ask anbody -this is good!.......2001-08-13
i heard 'hey now now' when it was released in th UK ages ago, i always loved the song and the gorgeous brothers! the album did not disapoint me either! the best songs have got to be 'candy in the sun' 'hey now now' and 'ask anybody'. yes the music does sound a little hansonish, but its got such a pretty sound to it, it can really make you smile. its perfect summer radio music, the guys have got got gorgeous voices too. its got almost an 80s kind of sound, but in a good way. buy this is if you like to dance to fresh summary music all year round,
The best album in history!.......2000-03-25
This cd is the best album I've ever heard, and most ppl I have played it to totally agree. These brothers have managed to find their own sound, and you can't compare them to anybody else! They've managed what hardly anybody else has done, to make an album where none of the songs are bad or boring. Ususally when you play an album you skip one or two of the songs, but with "Ask anybody" you just HAVE to listen to them all...again, and again, and again... My personal fave songs are "Ask Anybody", "Stick around" "There" "Forget you too" "Hey now now"...etc.
Can't wait for the next album to come out!
One of the most talented bands ever!.......2000-03-19
I absolutely love the Ask Anybody album! Pop music hasn't seen this much talent in a long time. The infectious tunes range from unique sounds once heard from The Beatles and The Beach Boys. These brothers are definetely not another example of pop music's "one hit wonder" problem. With their amazing songwriting skills, great voices, and guitar playing, there is no doubt in my mind that Denny and Kenny Scott are one of the best things to happen to music since The Beatles!
GROOOOOVY!.......2000-02-15
Although no new ground was broken here, I still liked it. The music is quite infectious and fun. The lyrics range from serious to campy. My favs are: "Hey Now Now"- What isn't to like about this one? Rockin' video too! "There"- Nice ballad, good melody. "Rewind"- Really cool, great bridge and transition after second verse. "Forget You Too"- Better to have loved and lost than never to have loved? You decide. Mellow with acoustic guitar. Overall, this is a CD worth owning. Looking forward to some new stuff. Peace

A refreshing musical experience.......2005-12-23
Adrina writes, sings, and plays melodic meaningful songs. She plays a grand piano sounding keyboard with appropriate backup. Each song has a little different feel to it, but all are refreshing. I listen to them almost every day. You are in for a real uplifting musical experience. I'm an old fan, 71 years old, but no matter whether you're young or old you will love this album.
A Must Have to Your Music Collection!!!.......2005-12-23
There are many ways that love rises to the surface in our lives. It can come disguised as questions and as answers, as both comfort and discomfort--- often simultaneously. The essential elements that fill in the spaces between the beats of the heart are not only in dreams and fairytales, but in real life in all of its messy, yet perfect glory. Adrina Thorpe captures this beauty, beautifully.
The album "Elusive" is a very impressive first effort. Adrina's pristine vocals and intricate piano work yield numerous memorable tracks, including the opening "Fly Fly Fly" and the popular "Round the Bend". Her youthful romanticism is perhaps captured best in "Did You Think", a catchy tune that is embellished with soothing vocals and sparkling keyboards. This album is a must have to anyone's collection. I promise you will not be disappointed!
Amazing and inspirational.......2005-12-23
I just recieved Adrina's Elusive cd this morning and have not yet stopped listening to it. I first heard of Adrina through myspace.com and became a fan automatically. The lyrics are heartfelt and deep with so much emotion you can feel it. I will always be a fan of her art of music. Absolutely amazing!!! It makes you feel alive and at ease.
Such a fantastic breath of fresh air. A must have........2005-12-23
I received the "Elusive" album about 2 weeks ago and it is absolutely excellent. I have been recommending her to friends and as well, I'd recommend this to music lovers in general. In this day and age of formulaic corporate insultingly dull music, it is so refreshing to find an artist such as Adrina Thorpe that re-affirms that there is still intelligent and creative life out there. My favorite tracks right now are "More than Seventeen", "Sorry", and "Never Meant". Do yourself and the music world a favor and support this bright new artist and spread the word about Adrina Thorpe!
Elusive for Words.......2005-12-23
Adrina Thorpe's Myspace link was sent to me by a dear friend. After hearing the few songs, I found myself playing them over and over. I just picked up the album Elusive and I am SOLD. I am really looking for the next album. Not only did I get it at the perfect time dealing with issues in life. It has been in the CD player non stop.
Keep it darling and You will always have a fan in me!

catch this if you can!.......2002-05-12
The mixes from the US Cruel/Raspberry Swirl single are wonderful, but getting this CD for The Sticky Extended Vocal Mix was totally worth it! It's probably my favorite of the 3 mixes. Tori's singles are meant to reward the devoted and supportive. This single does just that. I just wish I could have gotten it when it was new!
RASPBERRY SWIRL IMPORT SINGLE.......1999-08-17
This is a great cd, except that you can get the Lip Glossversion and the Scarlet Spectrum Feels version on the U.S. single. Soreally you are paying $10.99 for the Stickey Extended Vocal Mix, one song. If you are a really big Tori fan like me it's worth it to buy, but if ur not that big of a fan or just starting out one song isnt worth $10.99.
The three new versions of Raspberry Swirl.......1998-11-09
A must-have for all Toriphiles. The first mix is the closest to the LP version and will probably get the most radio play. The second is a dance version and is reminiscent of the Professional Widow remixes. The third is a very interesting dub with all sorts of cool sounds. Buy it and hear them all again and again!

Best Sprung Monkey CD!.......2000-04-11
I first listened to Sprung Monkey when I bought MR FUNNY FACE, and I really liked them. Then I was convinced this band was for real and bought their first major label release SWIRL. It is amazing! It is better than Mr.FF. In Swirl they have a more aggresive, raw, and straight out aggression. They really have some awesome rythms, with intelligent lyrics, fast aggresive heavy guitars and tons of percussion and bass. This is one of the most groundbreaking and awesome bands now. Buy SWIRL and you won't be dissapointed. The stand out tracks in my opinion are #2,3,4,10. But it is good from start to end. Get it!
If u liked Mr. Funny Face..........2000-04-09
If u liked Mr. Funny Face, then you *MUST* hear this album. The title track, "Swirl", is a whirling beautiful anthem which changes from a slow trance into passionate screams. The album is brilliant musically and lyrically and every song has its moments. I have no doubt that Sprung Monkey is on the verge of stardome with their next effort.

Product Description
The sophmore album from female foursome Vervein. Their sound is like the aural equivalent of vicodin and red wine at the same time. A moody, atmospheric foursome with ethereal vocals, interwoven guitars and cello set to driving drums. Likened to Mazzy Star, the Breeders, American Analog Set, and Throwing Muses.

Vaguely pleasant, but lacking hooks, substancial chord progressions, and melodies. It's not drone music it's pop-rock but it just kinda drones. It's not giving me much to get into. Reminds me of early Curve, which is a change from their last album which was somewhat more organic but equally patchy, although it had a couple truly great songs and this album seems to be lacking any. I don't suppose this band will ever make an album that reaches the potential they hinted at during those best moments.

Dark and Depressing Despite "California" Title.......2007-04-20
Most of the music here is dreary, and at first I was expecting sunny California pop, but when I saw the cover art of this disc, the music is exactly consistent with it. Most of the songs deal with painful losses of everyting from relationships, friendships, self-identity, money, etc. The song "Okay," an acoustic ballad from the Van Wilder movie, is perhaps the album's finest moment. There is not only a dreary, but an eerie feeling throughout, as the lyrics echo fears and paranoia as well as the self-doubt mentioned earlier. At first listen, this is just another pop-rock record, but when the lyrics are read closely, it is surprising as to the dark places that this album takes you. "Dark Side of the Moon" this is not by any stretch, but there are enough hooks to make it worthwhile. Nothing even close to "Hey Now Now" though.

Alternative Christian Music With Tongue in Cheek.......2006-06-14
Zoom Daddy is a 1994 album by the Swirling Eddies, basically another incarnation of Daniel Amos. The liner notes credit the Eddies as Terry Taylor, Tim Chandler, David Raven, Jerry Chamberlain, Greg Flesch, and G Eugene (Gene Eugene - why did they leave off his first name?).
Like other albums by Terry Scott Taylor and his different bands (Daniel Amos, Swirling Eddies, Lost Dogs), the lyrics are humorous, sarcastic, intelligent, and make you think. The tunes are not mostly as catchy here as most of their other efforts, with exceptions being The Twist (not Chubby Checker's song, though it includes a reference to it) and Pyro Sets a Wildfire, both of which sound like they were written with airplay in mind, and Zoom Daddy, which is a bit more offbeat.
