5 out of 5 stars Jeanette MacDonald Favorites.......2007-05-13

This CD is an incredible testimony and celebration of an American Master Singer.
A must have for all. An introduction to quality and good taste for a new generation of music lovers.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST for any Jeanette fan!.......2006-04-25

This CD is a gem! The songs included on it are beautiful and show off MacDonald's incredible voice. The best part of this CD, however, is the sound quality. Unlike many of her other recordings, and those featuring her with frequent costar Nelson Eddy, the sound on this CD is pristine, and you can barely tell the recordings are 50+ years old!

4 out of 5 stars Jeanette MacDonald Was Unique.......2001-03-12

It really doesn't matter whether or not she could sing; Jeanette MacDonald was unique. On these old recordings, her voice sounds thin and watery, and contemporary tastes do not respond so readily to the sentimentality and predictability of her movies. But she was a gracious lady and glittering presence on the silver screen. These film songs do suggest the excitement she generated when her movies first appeared. And how many truly major singers she inspired! Joan Sutherland recalled meeting MacDonald a few years before her death. Said Sutherland: "I still had stars in my eyes."

5 out of 5 stars An excellent demonstration of Jeanette MacDonald's artistry.......1998-12-18

The highlights of this Jeanette MacDonald CD include her excellent singing of Delibes' "Les Filles de Cadiz," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and the "Jewel Song" from "Faust." A much-underrated artist, MacDonald proves here that she can handle a wide range of music, from concert songs and opera arias to familiar tunes from her operetta films. Particularly fine are her renditions of "Only a Rose," and Herbert's "Romany Life" (in spite of an amateurish male chorus). Highly recommended not only as a tribute to filmdom's first lady of song, but also to listeners who enjoy both opera and musical comedy.

Amazon.com essential recording

Kurt Weill harbored ambitions to compose the great American opera in the public, populist forum of Broadway, much as Gershwin did with Porgy and Bess. He did so in the 1947 Street Scene, which is a three-hour panorama of working-class American life revolving around a woman in an abusive marriage who is murdered for seeking comfort elsewhere. Weill never demonstrated a more remarkable fluency in a range of popular music style, but the piece's somewhat dated (and deliberate) sense of dramaturgy is apparent in this single disc of excerpts, performed in the comparatively reserved Broadway style of the 1940s. Though Langston Hughes's lyrics capture the Edward Hopperesque loneliness of those times, they can also be cloyingly bald. Weill's combination of pop-music manner and Puccinian operatic grandeur has since been more cohesively negotiated. However, excerpts this extensive would have been possible only in the dawn of the LP era, with cast members Anne Jeffreys, Polyna Stoska, and Brian Sullivan showing how this piece's journey started. --David Patrick Stearns

4 out of 5 stars Street Scene: An American Musical/Opera.......2006-08-16

I list this in both my Musicals and Opera.. I read a review , not of this production,, but of an operatic one , comparing it to "louise".. I'm amazed at how fast Weill adapted to the american idiom..I thinks his best work was with Brecht and Ira Gershwin.. that being said.. this is a good recording encouraging me to see,, if I can find one, a production..
Anne Jefferies,, I believe was in a revival of kismet and is georgeous..

5 out of 5 stars A New concept of collaboration.......2000-05-18

Larry Warren in his book :"Anna Sokolow The Rebellious Spirit" writes: "In "Oklahoma!" and "On the town",Agnes de Mille and Jerome Robbins had pioneered in the use of dance to further the plot of a musical, but their language was based on a ballet vocabulary. In Street Scene Anna proved that Social-dance forms have an inherent dramatic powers when they are artfully used as an expression of the society that created them. Ten years later Robbins used his genius to bring this concept to its fullest expression on Broadway in West Side Story".

5 out of 5 stars in short, well done!.......2004-03-10

this is another CD I purchase after I dled the entire album mp3s
from the first trax, Way out to hope street, filled with joy and uplift feeling
on the 4th trax, Year's turning, is an excellent piece with bagpipe, fiddle, and bass guitar, brings out joy with tears
on the last trax, Bannockburn, it show the scene of the war...
because the three trax I talked about, I made a decision to buy the CD, and really like it

5 out of 5 stars A fresh, new approach to modern Celtic music!.......2004-01-01

This sextet of already-established musical masters combine the best traditional Celtic and modern jazz elements to create a joyful and transcendent musical statement. "Way Out To Hope Street", Skyedance's debut album, is invigorating and distinctive. The vibrant fiddling of Alasdair Fraser, soulful wooden-flute-playing of Chris Norman and expert piping of Eric Rigler provide the traditional Scottish part of the group's sound, while Peter Maund's world percussion adds an eclectic layer. Underneath all of that, the rich piano and keyboards of Paul Machlis and Mick Linden's laid-back fretless bass give everything a modern, jazzy feel. The result is unlike that of any other Celtic group I'm familiar with--not traditional, rock or New Age, but rather a sound all their own. Full of energy, tension, hope and heart, it is really quite striking! The whole here truly is more than the sum of its considerable parts. And the subsequent releases of Skyedance, "Labyrinth" and "Live in Spain", are great too! For other innovative takes on Scottish music, try the compilation album "Bravehearts: New Scots Music: A Narada Collection", and also "Sidewaulk" or "Crosswinds" by Capercaillie.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets!.......1999-10-03

These five guys are all superstars in the world of Celtic music. To see them all on one stage is a performance I'll never forget. The CD is fabulous and a perfect example of music that most of the world is missing out on.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly enjoyable.......1998-05-22

The artists who made the original "Skyedance" album (Machlis and Fraser) join here with a group of other outstanding musicians and a passel of original tunes. While the quality of the compositions varies and the arrangements are occasionally repetitious, in general the album is a delight. (One major contributor to its success is the terrific percussionist Peter Maund, who did wonders on Ensemble Alcatraz' early music albums a few years back.) The performances, whether cheery or melancholy, are spirited. Much traditional Scottish music consists of dance tunes, and this album never wanders out of sight of those roots. And you've gotta love someone who names a tune "The Braemar Cappuccino"!

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2007-05-22

I have been a long time house music lover all the way back in the days of Chicago. This was a devastating disappointment. The result didn't match the intention in this project. Very cheaply done. :-(

5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2004-12-06

Blaze have proven once again that they are truely the current Godfathers of vocal /soulful house music.Inspirers and pioneers of the soulful "Shelter" sound. I personally rate them as the best house producers currently, followed by the likes of Frankie Feliciano, Dj Spinna and Osunlade. It would be a great tragedy for any music lover to not have this CD in their collection. The CD has a lot of meaning and is extremely inspiring and uplifting.I cannot forsee how Blaze can outdo what they have produced in this Album. But then again Blaze are Blaze, true legends in terms of soulful house and one thing they have done consistently without fail to outdo themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting & Soulful music.......2004-11-06

Believe me, the lyrics of each song will move you. This is an very well crafted album of songs that will help you through any
hard times in your life and make you feel better. The songs are
about unity, love, peace and the abandonment of pain. This is truly Garage/House music with emotive vocals at it very best! You will be gald that you have this CD because they replay value is excellent. You can listen to each song and feel the emotive through it. I love all the song on it. If you want music that will bring you joy, get this great CD.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2002-03-11

This album is the follow up to 'Tinderbox'. How they got a recording contract for that dreadful effort I don't know. So, like many I wasn't over-optimistic about the new effort. However, the album is quite simply superb and ranks up there with their best. On the UK version the track listing is much better- the US version starts with a weak song whereas its British equivalent grabs you by the throat from the beginning. After the feable relationship songs of Tinderbox it was nice to see the band get back to the political stuff which has made their reputation. It even includes one song about Northern Ireland in the wake of the 'Good Friday agreements' (the excellent 'Last Train'). The album offers varied tempos from an up-beat reworking of 'You can get it' to the slow but very powerful 'Half a life'. An excellent collection of songs by any standard- providing that you're open-minded enough to accept that the band have aged and moved on- unfortunately too many SLF fans are stuck in the late 1970's and the band's powerful debut albums. Free your mind.

4 out of 5 stars Compared to other recent efforts, this is ideal.......2001-02-28

If you didn't already know, the first disc in this set is all new material, the second is a live set that serves as another SLF "Best Of." The live stuff is good, you should know what to expect there. But back when I bought this, I was really impressed about how they had improved. To be sure, this is no Inflammable Material. The rage and anger that fueled that album is from an increasingly disappearing bygone era. The improvement comes relative to the rather unholy trilogy of Flags And Emblems, Get A Life, and Tinderbox. If you have never had the misfortune of hearing those 3 slabs of dreck, count yourself lucky. Which is why I approached this one half-flinchingly.

But it was okay. It was more than okay, it was GOOD. I mean, SLF are a more smoothed out band now, with acoustic guitars and the occasional brass section, but the songwriting is still there along with some punch and gusto, and on Hope Street it is better than anything since Now Then. Gladly, we can all rejoice that SLF has finally cured whatever malady plagued them in the late 80's/early 90's. Mind you, this is not a classic like Nobody's Heroes, but for where SLF are today, it is eminently likeable and belongs in the average Fingers fan's collection. And getting the live disc is like a bonus.

1 out of 5 stars Big Disappointment.......2000-04-06

I had read a few positive things about this disc and being an SLF fan for many years, I was upbeat about the prospect of new, decent SLF music. However, I was not terribly impressed with it. It did come closer than other recent attempts by the band, but was lacking something. Perhaps the band should move in a new direction, if for no other reason than to give poor Jake's voice a rest.

4 out of 5 stars Best CD Jake & Co. have done in years.......1999-05-26

Jake Burns has once again emerged as a force in the English music scene. Hope Street is by far the best disc SLF has put out in many years (too many). The live disc was a bit of a let down for me, but then I have all of their other live recordings, and this disc didn't have their flow.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Marvel.......2007-02-23

Tony Hymas, longtime collaborator with guitar hero Jeff Beck, has another side to him that most music fans seem to know little about. Co-founder with neglected jazz great and British sax genius Tony Coe of that wacky outfit, The Lonely Bears, purveyor of several discs investigating Native American musics, collaborator with Sam Rivers on two memorable sessions (8 Day Journal and Winter Garden), and acoustic piano jazz maven of huge presence, it is in that latter mode that he here trots out his prodigal chops and unique musical vision.

First, a note about Nato, the label this disc first appeared on in 2002, and the version that I'm reviewing from. (Apparently, distribution of Nato has been taken over by Nocturne, an outfit I'm unfamiliar with.) One of those mysterioso French labels (like, e.g., Celp or Evidence), Nato was the home of not only the Lonely Bears, but several other Tony Hymas discs featuring Tony Coe, among the best being Les Sources Bleues (sadly, not available on Amazon) and Oyate, as well as the two aforementioned Tony Hymas/Sam Rivers collaborations. Some of these discs (this one among them) included the altogether remarkable artwork of Moebius with their fantastical landscapes, fevered visions, and unlikely creatures. It would be entirely wonderful if the full, quirky, Nato catalog were available on Amazon, but, alas, that would only happen in the best of worlds. Nevertheless, let us rejoice that at least some of it--including this remarkable disc--can be obtained here.

Hymas has recruited players every bit his peers, though ones not familiar to me: Billy Peterson on bass and Eric Kamau Gravatt on drums. Together, they create jazz trio music of startling range and accomplishment, easily moving from thrumming immediacy ("Quanah Parker," reprised from Oyate) to extreme delicacy ("9 Regrets," "Cousin Wendy"), to wooly world-jazz ("Allamambasalsalala"), to way-hip post-bop ("Point to Point), to lush pop-romanticism ("Just Calling for You") to edgy punkish jazz ("So . . . Turns the Worm").

All but two compositions are Hymas's: Irving Berlin's "Anything You Can Do," given an appropriately playful reading, and Prince's "Condition of the Heart," rendered in appositely bombastic/tender sentiments.

Looking for smart, out-of-the-mainstream but totally tuned in jazz piano trio? Look no farther than this spectacular disc by neglected Brit Tony Hymas. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The "new" best VW Symphony 8.......2003-01-03

In a review of Haitink's RVW Symphonies 8 and 9 on EMI, I said that they were the best, "for now." The 8th has been finally outclassed--by a performance from 1967!

That this recording is by Barbirolli should not be too much of a surprise, as he was in fact the symphony's dedicatee, and a favorite conductor of Vaughan Williams himself. There is a natural rapport between the two, which allows Barbirolli to go beneath the surface of the music, and find the deeper meanings not at first evident on the page.

The first movement of the symphony is stately in its grandeur, like other recordings, yet even at its triumphant climax, the music still feels somewhat restrained. This same sense of foreboding--which Vaughan Williams himself pointed out when asked about the symphony--lasts through the defiant Scherzo for brass instruments, and the heartwearming Cavatina for strings, until the very final moments of the concluding Toccata. Even here, Barbirolli manages to make the collection of "all the 'phones and 'spiels known to the composer" even more lively and prominent than does Haitink or his other rivals. However, compared to other recordings, the final bars of this performance hold one more surprising detail, which confirms that the symphony is in fact in a minor key and also supports the idea that there's something deeper than the "Turandot"-inspired tintinnabulation. All in all, a tour de force. [Listen to this recording, and the endings of all other performances will seem like a cop-out.]

There's much more to this disc than the Eighth Symphony, and happily most of it is on the same inspired level. The Rawsthorne and Bax works are new to me, but very welcome additions to my collection. I also enjoyed the Delius, and while Walton's "Crown Imperial" is fervently played, the orchestral ensemble is not quite what it could be. And, while I'm glad to have another recording of Kathleen Ferrier, the recording of "Land of Hope and Glory" does have a lot of background noise to filter out. Without the liner notes, one would have thought that "Land" was recorded in the mid-1930's, not the early 1950's. [All the other works were recorded between 1967 and 1969, and are in perfectly good sound.]

This disc is a must-have for Barbirolli enthusiasts, RVW fans, and anyone interested in hearing British music in a non-pastoral vein. . . .

4 out of 5 stars Incredibly beautiful contemporary guitar music.......2002-07-06

This is an amazing cd and I'm very surprised I've never heard of this composer before. The melodies are so evocative and heartwrenching, somewhat abstract, but always tonal. It speaks to my soul. There are some really nice faster, complex pieces to keep things interesting, but overall, this is music for contemplation. My only reservation is there is a harmonica featured on 3 or so tracks which is distracting. It takes some getting used to and reminds one of an Italian bandoneon player serenading someone on one of the canals, or perhaps Piazolla, though not so rhythmic and "tango-ish". The tracks with it aren't bad, but it plays the melody line and kind of changes the focus from the guitar. Overall though, it shouldn't discourage anyone from getting this one, especially lovers of contemporary guitar music, looking for something different.
