About the Artist
Formed in the shadows of a Midwestern "university" in the mid nineties, the Nabokov Project has no set membership or contributors beyond that of m. w. gargo. Its most recent incarnation has included the membership of Dave Pollock (spoken-word vocals), Ted Leslie (percussion), Thea Morton (cello, guitar, and keys), and m. w. gargo (vocals, guitar, computer, and keys). Many songs were part of this collaboration (even though they were all written by m. w. gargo). Ted Leslie, however, after the start of this collaboration developed brain cancer and has since died. His illness and death put this version of the band on hold permanently and allowed for the solo "project" to emerge. With the graduation of m. w. gargo, it has moved East and, as Finnegan, begins again in Pittsburgh, PA. M. W. Gargo's solo effort, "Effete Coquette," was dreamed and recorded over the past three years in living rooms and closets of upstairs apartments in Eau Claire, WI and Pittsburgh, PA.

Album Description
This is the first effort of singer/songwriter m. w. gargo in his move into solo music. the Nabokov Project is his "solo" project after being a singer/guitarist in a post-hardcore punk act in the States during the mid 1990's. This album documents a large expanse of styles and genres(from folk, instrumental, goth, to post-rock & experimental), rooting itself firmly in all that is "alternative" while touching always upon (if not obsessing over) the dark sounds and moments of life. This collection of songs is meant to bring a touch of beauty into the world and also provoke some thought on the state of music in the "post-modern" world.

5 out of 5 stars Multi-Genre Lo-Fi.......2002-05-23

I first came across this artist on MP3.com. I've stayed closely posted to their every move ever since. While many may be turned off by lo-fi music (lo-fi, by the way, does not = bad), I was compelled by the Nabokov Project's range and depth on "Effete Coquette." There are no mainstream artists who can successfully manage to bridge this many musical genres and still deliver a solid product. This album stretches from experimental, folk, punk, rock, to hardcore-weird without missing a beat while managing to produce a debut that offers much hope for future releases. These songs are political and practical. They resonate with a musical and lyrical force that most bands fear in that they never stray away from the tough issues of our times: suicide (White Pill Taken), rape (the Gift), class exploitation (Josh Land's Last Dream), death/loss (Ted's Song) and first-world apathy (at the punk rock show). While these songs are far from perfect, I fear that the world would be a lesser place without these tunes in its cultural matrix. This is a project worth paying serious attention to. By the way, the instrumentals ?Japanese Pop? and ?Dramatic Music from the Unmade Movie? are to die for. Worth the listen/purchase to any lo-fi, alt/post-rock fan.
