Divinity

classic ethereal collage of beautiful delicate male and female vocals surrounded by dark whirling guitar melodies.

brainwashed.com
A good debut which should be appreciated by all lovers of ethereal music with female vocals.

Album Description
The DIVINITY EP begins with the title track, a trippy dark lament inspired by Milton's Paradise Lost, which swirls around the beautiful vocals of Kit Messick. The sympathetic voice consoles one who has lost everything and is condemned "wandering a circle on and on".

The next track, "Forsaken by Sky", is a light introspective song that builds upon the Shakespearean axiom "the fault lies not in the stars but in ourselves". Accented by a stirring violin melody and acoustic guitars, "Forsaken by Sky" engages the listener with its enthusiasm and energy.

"Julia" leads us back in to the darkness. Driven by strumming acoustics and haunting vocals by Babbo, the song pleads for the title character to "wake from her trance" and live again. This dark poetic piece resonates with Dalin's violin, which circles around the ear.

The EP closes with the instrumental, "In This Heaven Once More". Melodic guitars float over atmospheric synths to provide traveling music for the ascent into the ether.

    Album Description

Over the past 15 years, Berlin has emerged as one of the world's leading party capitals! The weekly house/electro club night GMF, located in Café Moskau, has played a leading part in Berlin's party-culture since it's formation in 1996. GMF premiered as a `Gay Tea Dance', but has evolved into a full bodied party institution catering to a colorful and diverse party-populous.

To celebrate this decade of exhilarating nights, GMF has teamed up with its top residents to create a party-timepiece, capturing the style and energy of the GMF-groove throughout the years including all time classics like Pete Heller's "Big Love", Mousse T. with Emma Lanford's "Right About Now" or BBE's "Seven Days And One Week".

Berlin's own Paul van Dyk has been a good friend and frequent guest artist at GMF since the beginning. Paul has remained an inspirational force on the GMF partyscape.

This spring, PVD has teamed up with GMF Resident DJs Divinity and Super Zandy to produce a 10th year club mix, a compilation as tribute to the club and a city they call home!

this work of the gun club is a little more melodic. it's has many great songs, i realy like the eskimo blue day song (this song wants to make you jump into a car and drive around ^^)the sound quality is great, so are the live acts for the divinity part. if you can find this album somewhere.. you should definitly buy it !

5 out of 5 stars I detected you by the ringing bells..........2003-10-28

Like any of the Gun Club's albums, this cd is somewhat hard to find (although not nearly the collector's item that Miami or The Las Vegas Story currently are), and if you are lucky enough to stumble across a copy you should definitely buy it. It showcases the end stage of Jeffrey Lee Pierce's creative life. The songs are a lot mellower and more slickly produced than any of his previous works, and even though that robs them of a little fire, they are still a testament to Pierce's craftsmanship. In a manner somewhat akin to Prince, Pierce was able to make very expressive and melodic songs out of seemingly the sparest and most basic parts. His ability to blend words and tunes together placed him on the top shelf of rock songwriters, although I hesitate to use the dreaded "p-word" when describing his lyrics. By this stage in his career, arbitrary terms like "punk rock" or "rootsy" were irrelevant. That stretch of road was behind him. In fact, I see a great deal of similarity between the latter day Gun Club and the latter day Led Zeppelin. Some of the bluesy intensity of earlier masterpieces is clearly missing, but has been replaced by a keen subtlety that has a soothing rather than cathartic feel. On the Pastoral Hide and Seek half of this release, the band scratches out a few slow to mid tempo numbers that are equal parts ballad and funk, my favorite being the swervy "St. John's Divine", with its Marquee Moon-ish verses and Zeppelin-lite choruses. The Divinity half of the album continues with more of the same, although with the tempos turned up a notch at places. "Sorrow Knows" might be one of the tightest grooves Pierce ever laid down, and owes a great deal to the nimble fingers of bass player Romi Mori. "Richard Speck" is also a great song, showcasing some of that wonderful harmony of sighs you might've already heard on previous albums, such as Miami.

If you are brand new to this band, you may want to supplement this purchase with a copy of either "Fire of Love" or "Mother Juno", as this album is more of an epilogue to that segment of the band's lifetime. If you are already a fan, however, you ought to have sought this out long ago. So go now and find it quickly, before the ebay prices skyrocket.

A unique band that can contrast many aspects of heavy music with overall melody. Some very talented song writing in this. It is also nice to see a good band not taking themselves too seriously and still getting respect ;P

5 out of 5 stars Divinity Destroyed. ...:).......2006-03-02

This band..... is simply amazing. If you want to listen to a band that does something that hasnt been done or at least done well then divinity destroyed is your band. They will for-fill all open minded metal heads looking for something new from the old boring Rawr Rawr Rawr. A band with meaning, talent , direction, originality. This band got me into something more. It got me wanting bands that out do them selfs.

5 out of 5 stars If you like very non-orthodox styles..........2005-06-14

Yes, Divinity Destroyed is very non-structured when it comes to their music. Overall, it combines common elements (guitar, keyboard, vocal, and so forth) but in a unique manner. I have heard nothing like this, and I love most of their songs. Some might find it too unusual to like, but if you're open-minded, you'll like it.

5 out of 5 stars Let Divinity Destroyed Begin Their Reign!!!!.......2005-05-29

First off I reviewed this album for my webzine (...) before they got a deal and I must say they deserve more recognition then what they get. They are very talented and if you are looking for something that is not mudane and that hasn't been over done too many times they check these Unique Metalheads out.(...)

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Truly beautiful and moving music..........2003-02-06

I had been more than anxious to hear The Mirror Reveals, one of the predominant artists distributed by and signed to Middle Pillar records. I had initially been drawn to this NYC outfit due to their use of Art Nouveau master Alphonse Mucha's paintings for their CD covers and promotional flyers. You often see bands turning to Gustave Doré, Waterhouse, and the Pre-Raphaelites for artwork, but I had never seen anyone use Mucha before. The music of The Mirror Reveals is accurately mirrored by Mucha's art, as the same sensual eloquence and post-Romantic beauty graces these soothing compositions.

Another few points of interest to some may be that Kit Messick, who had previously worked with Unto Ashes on the "Moon Oppose Moon" CD, performs the lead female vocals on this EP. Also, Joanna Dalin, formerly of Backworld, contributes some tasteful and well-placed violin passages. All this combined with the lush acoustic as well as processed guitar work of James Babbo, and you indeed have a winning combination.

One of the first things about The Mirror Reveals that won me over was that they are without question responsible for truly beautiful and moving music. A lot of bands claim to be soothing and Romantic, and try desperately to appear that way. But few bands are as genuine and convincing as The Mirror Reveals, and it seems as though this mastering of emotion comes naturally and rather easily for the band. For a lack of a better description, this music is very sweet and just nice, and rarely do I find that to be a virtue in a band. I am always seeking excessively dark and dreary music, and it is rare that I enjoy `lighter' and more pleasant music. But this is exceptional, and has the ability to hold the attention and calm the senses all the same.

There are four tracks total on this EP, the follow up to the band's debut full-length "Frames Of Teknicolor." Each of the tracks seems to reflect a different side of the band, yet there is an obvious continuity and flow to the disc. The title track immediately grasps the listener's attention, for as soon as you press play, Kit's vocals appear, accompanied at first only by soft strains of flanged, reverberated guitars before subtle electronics work their way in to keep the rhythm and the song plunges into multiple layers of peaceful yet arresting romance. Lyrically inspired by Milton's "Paradise Lost," "Divinity" illustrates the popular 19th century readings of the epic poem, where Lucifer is seen as the forsaken hero and struggles with his jealous envy of God and Heaven.

"Divinity's out of your hands/when all you have has been taken/and no one else can see you as you are/...while everything else falls down"

"Forsaken By Sky" brings us `de profundis' for a lighter, jangling track that recalls some of the B-side ballads on the mid-eighties Cocteau Twins singles. A simple and delightful song, which contrasts well with the more pensive tracks that surround it.

"Julia" is probably my favourite track on the album, a haunting acoustic driven ballad featuring the brooding vocals of James in place of Kit's feathered alto. The song seems to skate upon the edge of an obsession, a slightly threatening bridge that sinks into a darker key but before the darkness is entirely indulged, the chorus pleads with an earnest sweetness and morose romanticism. This track will definitely appeal to fans of apocalyptic folk like Backworld, Death In June, and such, if not also to early 4AD fans. I heard a tinge of "The Jeweler" from This Mortal Coil in the heavily reverberated vocal delivery.

This EP closes with a wistful instrumental, relying heavily upon the band's characteristic ethereal appeal, but there is also an underlying sense of psychedelia to it. Whatever the case, it is a beautiful track and when the subdued synths and melancholic violins fade and the final guitar chord rings out, you definitely find yourself wanting more.

The "Divinity" EP did much more than simply wet my appetite to hear more of The Mirror Reveals; instead it made me ravenous and twice as anxious to pick up the debut. If you are a fan of swirling, romantic ethereal music and female fronted outfits like Love Spirals Downwards and the earlier work by the Cocteaus, don't delay any longer in checking out this starkly charming band.

This is full of musical beauty! The flute sections are as if Lord Krishna himself is playing, at least that's how I would imagine it. There is NO bad track on this CD! It's very rare to find an album that does not contain "filler" tracks. Just put the album in and it will take you into a relaxed, heavenly state of mind, and gently nudge one towards a positive outlook. Very sweet and satisfying! The acoustics and sound is also tops.

If you like Native American suites of relaxing music, this will be a great find for you. (I know, I know, this CD is "Indian," not "American Indian," but both types of music -- when done well -- pull me into a transcendental and otherwordly state.)

If you're from India, or know Indian 'aartis' or 'ragas', you'll instantly recognize some of these tracks as beautiful instrumental versions of those traditionals. Don't be put off -- these arrangements add a new, intense dimension to the bhajans/aartis we learned as children. The artists have done very good justice to the originals. You WILL fall in love with these interpretations instantly.

I am also a fan of the long, instrumental pieces of Genesis. Also a fan of "smooth jazz"(instrumental) and of Irish/Celtic music. This is to say that anyone who loves melodious instrumentals from any genre will also like this CD. I like music which stimulates my imagination, and "takes me away to whereever..." This CD is one of the best of its kind. I want more from Mr. Desai and company.
