Cynthia's in Love

Editorial Reviews
Donald V. Adderton, The Sun Herald
Two CDs, Diana Krall and Cynthia Crane, two superb talents who make wonderful music, each in her own special way.

Ron Della Chiesa, WGBH Radio
That smoky sound defines ‘voice noir’. This album will always be on my top shelf. A rare artist.

Album Description

4 out of 5 stars A GEM FROM THE PRINCESS THEATRE . . . .......2005-09-07

I agree with Mr. Behrens that this recording is a "must" for anyone serious about the American musical theatre, but I found the whole thing a trifle boring. (I would have given it 3 stars, but I was worried about turning people off.) The performances are splendid, and the original orchestrations for 10 pieces are a delight to hear. Upon hearing the overture, you might think you're listening to a superb digital restoration of an early 1900's recording. It's a gas.

Mr. Behrens states that the score contains neither a hit nor a miss and is an "improvement on the bubbleheaded competition," but the operettas of Sigmund Romberg, Rudolph Friml, Victor Herbert, et.al, were overflowing with far better songs than Jerome Kern would write for this or any other Princess Theatre Show. Many of the lyrics for "Eddie" are pretty inane, typical for the time, however. Kern wrote a much better score two years later for "Leave It to Jane" (1917), lyrics provided by long time collaborator P.G. Wodehouse. (A wonderful recording of the 1958 revival of "Jane" is available on AEI Records.) With Lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein, II, Jerome Kern wrote "Show Boat" in 1927, giving us the first truly great American musical. He also contributed some of Hollywood's most memorable songs, including "A Fine Romance," "The Way You Look Tonight," and "The Last Time I Saw Paris."

5 out of 5 stars A musical as it used to be.......1999-10-24

My fellow reviewer from Monterey Mass. hit the nail on the head. Though not as good as some of the "Princess Theater" shows to come ("Oh, Boy," "Oh, Lady, Lady," and the rest--this musical is quite an improvement on the bubbleheaded competition it had not only in its own time but long after it. It is also a relief from the "musical play" that replaced the musical comedy. Not a single hit song and not a single poor one in the whole show that was a pioneer of the great "integrated" shows to come, not the least of which would be Kern's own "Show Boat." This is a must for every serious collection of Broadway shows.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful version of a charming show.......1998-09-08

This is a 1915 show but it has more snap and charm than the current long melodramas that masquerade as entertainment

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful music taking the listener to a special place.......1999-05-27

I love this album. I enjoy listening to movie & show tunes. I also listen to new age music to "relax my mind" . This album combines the two in the best possible way. To me the Celtic harp is one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. I believe Ms. Douglass feels the same way and that comes across in her performance. I have several of Ms. Douglass' albums and have not been disappointed in any of them. I have also had the pleasure of meeting the artist. She is a most gracious person and enjoys meeting people and spreading the joy she finds in performing on the Celtic harp. If you are interested in the harp, I highly recommend this album..

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Performance.......2007-03-31

This is an an authentic, accessible, entertaining, and deeply satisfying performance. Although I like all of the principal singers, my two favorite are Clive Revill as Ko-Ko and Jean Allister as Katisha. For me, the key to a successful Gilbert and Sullivan performance is that it is not only funny, but also touching. In my opinion, Revill and Allister score high in both departments. In their final scene together, they are both vulnerable and hilarious at the same time. One small detail about this recording that bothers me slightly is that the overture has been rewritten. It is a nice medley, but I miss the original. I understand that Sullivan did not write it, but it is based on his tunes and I've always liked it. But don't let that stop you from getting this recording. I consider it to be the best Mikado on record.

5 out of 5 stars ARTICULATE MIKADO.......2007-01-31

Articulate - both in diction and in musical interpretation - this re-release of the 1960's Sadlers Wells recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's MIKADO is quite delightful. The care and loving detail, which were the keystones of SWO's productions of G & S and operettas in the 1960s onstage, are preserved here in Alexander Faris's splendidly gutsy interpretation of the most popular of all the Savoy Operas; if his speeds are at times too leisurely, all can be forgiven just to hear the superb soloists; the expert diction of Denis Dowling as Pooh-Bah; the heroic tones of John Wakefield as the Wandering Minstrel; Marion Studholme singing the best "Sun Whose Rays" you will ever here on disc; Jean Allister as a correctly dominating Katisha, (hurray - a real contralto!), with a superb glissando in "Beauty and the Bellow"; the glorious Pat Kern as Pitti-Sing making so much more of the traditional soubrette; John Heddle Nash giving a singing and acting lesson with Pish-Tush's only solo; and the droll Clive Revill so completely at ease in the comic role of Ko-Ko, (though it is strange that his running out of breath at the end of his verse in the Act Two trio was not corrected!) I have to say that this recording of THE MIKADO puts all other D'Oyly Carte and Glyndeboune recordings in the shade, and the inclusion of highlights from Sadlers Wells IOLANTHE from 1962 is just an added bonus - the overture in this is simply stunning, and how good to hear Eric Shilling, Heather Begg, and Elizabeth Harwood obviously enjoying themselves so much singing Sullivan's most musical of scores.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a worthy recording of the Mikado!.......2004-03-03

It really does make a difference, when performing Gilbert and Sullivan, to use singers who can act rather than the other way round. Every soloist here utilizes a very forward, "in-the-mask" vocal placement, which not only reduces the need to force, but helps to render their diction crystal-clear. Sample Jean Allister's Katisha. No plummy, oratorio contralto tones for her. Here is all the waspish, incisive malevolence that is already there in the writing; she just reveals it by singing and pronouncing the texts in a light and unforced manner. This approach helps to restore the vim and vigor to an opera that can often seem tired and "played-out" to modern ears. If the recording has any weakness, it may possibly be found in the Yum-yum and Nanki-Poo. Marion Studholme is perhaps more shrill than is necessary, while John Wakefield seems to have wandered in from a performance of Dream of Gerontius. These are minor quibbles, however. The overall excellence of the performance quells any doubts, with Alexander Faris' conducting a model of transparent clarity. The Iolanthe excerpts are also well-done, but it's Mikado that is the jewel here. Don't hesitate; buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

5 out of 5 stars Enjoyably 'Inauthentic,' Authentically 1950s Version.......2005-05-14

By rights, this 1955 version of John Gay's much-adapted 1728 'ballad opera' should sound antiquated beyond redemption: the musical version used is Frederick Austin's well-worn, prettified (& verbally expurgated) 1920 arrangement, subjected to the indignity of being blown up from chamber ensemble to full orchestra; Sir Malcolm Sargeant's tempi are impossibly 'inauthentic' (ie. slow); there are numerous cuts even beyond Austin's omissions; & the 2 separate casts, of opera singers & actors, recorded in different months, are not always convincingly 'matched up.' Yet it's one of the most enjoyable recordings I know of.
A quick scan of the cast list(s) will tell you why: the singers include Elsie Morison, John Cameron, Monica Sinclair, Ian Wallace, Owen Brannigan & Alexander Young & the actors Zena Walker, John Neville, Rachel Roberts, Eric Porter & Paul Rogers. In other words, these are top pros & strong audio personalities who grab their every opportunity. The musical performance is sumptuous & sheer pleasure to listen to, the actors & dialogue 'production' brisk, funny & sharper than you might expect. And the sound for both music & dialogue is of demonstration quality, one of the best of the period.
Those who find this version too musically ponderous or dramatically reactionary can find antidotes in the Bare Baroque Basics one by Jeremy Barlow & The Broadside Band (Hyperion), word & note complete, & the radical & often inspired 1948 Benjamin Britten arrangement (complete on Argo, abridged with the original cast on Pearl). They'll be missing some good 50s fun, though.
They'll also be missing the only available excerpts (15 numbers) from Edward German's tuneful 1907 operetta 'Tom Jones.' This really IS 'cleaned up' 18th century, genteel beyond the call of duty, but for those who respond to musical theater of the period, highly recommended. The 1966 recording is lively & accomplished. As Miss Jean Brodie would say, For those who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like. And a good thing too.

      Album Description

Shaker music is a unique body of American sacred folk music, created by eighteen American Shaker communities over a period of one hundred and forty years (1780-1920). This rich tradition of song continues to serve the Shaker community in the twenty-first century because it embodies their history, records the testimony of Shakers "who have gone before," articulates the religious principles on which Shakerism is founded, and reflects the faith of the contemporary community. Shaker music was created and nurtured in communities that prized isolation from worldly ways. Shaker melodies, although related to the larger tradition of Anglo-American folk songs, are not bound by their form, tonality, melodic or rhythmic structure.

The Enfield Shaker singers are a vocal ensemble of adults and children devoted to the study and performance of Shaker music. The group is open to all without audition, and is made up of both trained musicians and amateur singers. We draw heavily on the repertoire received or composed in the two societies that were the New Hampshire Bishopric—Canterbury and Enfield. Since the New Hampshire societies enriched their repertoire with songs from all the other Shaker communities, they also sing songs of the New York, Maine, Massachusetts, Ohio and Kentucky Shakers.

The Enfield Shaker Singers are drawn to Shaker spirituals that illuminate Shaker communal values and broaden our definitions of the sacred. The songs included on this recording illustrate some of the many ways music served Shaker communities. Most Shaker song texts are theologically direct, emotionally honest, and expressive of our shared humanity.

On this recording we offer thirty-nine songs we have come to love. Some have special meaning for individuals. We associate others with a particular singer in the group, or an occasion when it was sung. Each song offers us slightly different insights into Shaker aspiration, and Shaker faith. We hope that, through this recording, others will also come to love and sing them too. —Mary Ann Haagen, from the liner notes

4 out of 5 stars Religious music from the 19th century.......2007-07-07

If one likes the songs of the Shakers written in the late 18th and early 19 century that were without musical instruments, then you may like this CD. I found 8 songs out of the 30 or more on the CD that I liked, the others I did not care for much. This is no fault of the creators of the Cd, it is simply the style of the Shakers of the past.

      5 out of 5 stars A wonderful listening treat.......2005-01-11

This CD is a delight! The simple melodies, surprising harmonies, and clarity of the voices makes you want to sing along. Listening makes one smile, regardless of one's religious persuasion. Thank you for giving us these songs and preserving the tradition of this music.
