Xenophile

Editorial Reviews
Insite Magazine, April 1998
"...the language of music is constantly changing and in order to tell a story you have to keep up on that language. With that in mind, our approach on 'Xenophile' was to tell stories to engage the listener with interesting productions, yet never lose site of the song.

From the Artist
Orleck talks about their upcoming second release, 'Xenophile', "We wanted to tackle issues from a more honest perspective. In the past I think our language left too little room for interpretation" (Orleck refers to their previous self-titled CD release on Heavy Rotation Records.)

Album Description
Hailing from the birth place of Aerosmith, fellow Bostonian's 7 Acres combine Guitar Driven Pop Rock reminiscent of early 90's Soul Asylum. 7 Acres new release, 'Xenophile', features soaring vocal arrangements which would make even the sternest of Counting Crowes' fan's do a double take. Mixed by Bill Klatt (Co-Producer of 'Days of the New') the lead track 'Uncle Joe', is sure to have most radio rock fans tuning up the air guitar in the corner.

Chilean traditional music septet Inti-Illimani have spent the last 30 years mixing together South American folk styles and a human-rights oriented political agenda. Taking on the largely string-oriented folk music of the Andes Mountains, Inti-Illimani surround their often unison Spanish vocals with rainstorms of guitars, charangos, ronrocos, and guitarrons. In doing so, the group celebrates the everydayness of Andean music and culture--striking a chord of solidarity with global folk cultural struggles. --Andy Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars Un disco de bellezas andinas sonoras.......2000-05-08

Early in their formation, the engineering students that were Inti-Illimani (pronounced "intee-E-gee-manee") explored not only the music of their homeland of Chile, but also the native culture of Argentina, Peru, and surrounding countries. This research led to a 30-year career that's produced a bounty of diverse music from Latin America and is why one hears everything from son folk to Andean pan flutes in the ensemble's repertoire. Listeners unfamiliar with the eight-member group whose instrumentation includes such familiar tools as guitar and clarinet and such exotic ones as the quena (a reed flute) and rondador (reed pan flute) have an opportunity to taste the varied flavors of its breezy, romantic music. Over the years Inti have consistently penned sociopolitical lyrics addressing human rights with an undying optimism, an outgrowth in part of their exile from Chile in 1973. Whatever the history, this album provides a spirited and comprehensive introduction to a group of musicians who've created some of the most moving Latin music of the last 30 years. --Karen K. Hugg

4 out of 5 stars Let us learn to appreciate their great music without..........2005-12-30

I've listened to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and magnificent recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years", can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, much better. All us should by now.

Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension.

I give Inti Illimani a 5 rating for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get a -5.

4 out of 5 stars a well-chosen and diverse cd.......2005-09-12

How exciting to hear such a talented group of musicians with such diverse songs! I understand this isn't their best cd, but I'm not into the political message, just the music and boy is it good.

1 out of 5 stars I don't need to listen it.......2002-09-19

I don't need to listen it. I'm a chilean fan of this group and I can't understand why somebody choose this songs. Where is alturas, chiloe, vuelvo, la exiliada del sur, sambalando, mercado testaccio, señora chichera? Any single disc is better than this selection.

1 out of 5 stars The Best of Inti-Illimani.......2001-09-11

Formed in the late 1960's by university students and performing primarily in Chile through the exciting Allende years and then performing in exile through the frightening Pinochet years, Inti-Illimani became the leader of the Chilean "new song" movement. Using native instruments like the charango and quena, folk rhythms and harmonies, and varied themes, Inti-Illimani became the leading proponent of native music of Chile and the Andean highlands and, in a logical progression, then the leading proponent of folk-based music of social content and social statement. With Inti's varied and high-quality output, it is not possible to pick a "best" CD or even best song from this period.

Unfortunately, someone (probably in the distribution company) misnamed this CD. It cannot be called the "best" of Inti-Illimani because it is not a selection made from Inti's earlier folk-inspired or social content music. Sadly, it is not the "best" in the musical sense as well.

This CD appears to be an attempt to perform the complex sounds and rhythms of the music of Cuba and the Caribbean -- a difficult undertaking at best -- and it falls short in the endeavor. Rhythms, harmonies, and counterpoints are not maintained. They certainly do not come through well when played on the instruments of the highlands, which are not suited to this music. Melodic lines are hard to follow and, in several instances, actually cease to exist.

To call this CD the "best" of Inti-Illimani is a disservice to its earlier, and far finer, recordings. It is a substantial disappointment in almost all respects.

THE BEST OF INTI ILLIMANI, una nueva época, un nuevo mundo.

5 out of 5 stars Superb don't miss out.......1999-11-17

Arguably one of the best albums in the world. Mellow yet diverse. Semite virtuosity as a musician and singer astound and enfold. This album is the best in the series of fabulous albums made by a man who has been able to carrying the energy and heart of Africa to the shores of America.

5 out of 5 stars We love this album........1999-09-21

This is one of the best albums we've ever owned. The music is very light and full of positive energy, and is easy to appreciate even for people who don't know much about African music (like us). In fact, almost every time we've played this at work, someone new asks who this is and says how great it sounds.

Not much to say other than what's been said. I really love this CD and will be looking to buy more of Samite's work very soon. Just wonderful lighthearted folky jazzy african music.

The Chilean folk group Inti-Illimani spent the years of 1973 to 1988 in Europe (exiled by the Pinochet military dictatorship, which apparently feared their celebration of indigenous culture as much as their populist lyrics). During those expatriate years, Inti-Illimani often found themselves playing for non-Spanish-speaking audiences and came to emphasize their exquisite chamber-folk instrumental work over their vocals. The band returned in triumph to its native country in 1988, however, and Andadas (recorded in '92 and finally released here) is the first Inti-Illimani album made at home in 20 years. As a result, the album places a renewed emphasis on lyrics and vocals. Eight of the 11 selections are songs, and the words come from such Latin American poets as Nicolas Guillen, Eugenio Ilona, and Patricio Manns. The same seamless harmonies that characterize the group's instrumental work are present in its singing, which is dominated by joined voices rather than solos. Inti-Illimani explicitly address the issue of their exile in the slow, ghostly "El Equipage del Destierro" ("The Luggage of the Banished"). In the CD booklet's English translation, Manns's words are, "I will let you assume that I abandoned my people, that I fled, breaking the cruel threshold as a terrified puma.... Yet I must confess I did not misplace one single grain of pollen, since they will not be able to separate me from this land." By contrast, other songs translated as "Loving You Dark Woman Till Death," "Elegant Look," and "Mulatto Woman" are lively, percussion-driven celebrations of romance and sensuality. --Geoffrey Himes

3 out of 5 stars Not Their Best.......2000-08-01

I have long been a fan of Inti-Illimani but mostly of their evocative instrumentals. I don't understand those who downgrade an album just because it is not anti-establishment enough. Any[one] can sing "down with the government", and many do. What one should look at is the quality of the music, and on Andadas, that quality is not quite up to standard although the album is good enough to rate 3 stars. One can enjoy the quality of a group's music without sharingits politics. I enjoy the music of a long line of Latin leftists such as Atahualpa Yupanqui, Astor Piazzolla and Inti-Illimani at the same time feeling that on balance Pinochet was good for Chile. Andadas' best song, El Equipaje del Destierro, is a case in point. Leftist, yes, but undeniably beautiful. When I play this album, I'm usually at the office as it is suitably relaxing for my work and my customers seem to enjoy it. If you are expecting a blockbuster, forget it.But if you like Inti-Illimani's style of music, you will probably like this despite the lack of bombthrowing.

5 out of 5 stars Siempre los Inti descubriendo América........2000-05-08

5 out of 5 stars Inti-Illimani alive and kicking.......1999-10-16

Groups such as Inti-Illimani and Quilapayun have been criticised by some of their early fans for regressing into an easier, less political style of music. Somebody wrote a critique above comparing their recent work and this cd to Julio Iglesias... I wonder whether these fans would have preferred the dictatorship in Chile to have continued, so that Inti Illimani could sing more tunes of Victor Jara or songs such as "pueblo unido"...

Andadas is a unique CD. The lyrics and the music are comparable to the best the group has composed and performed so far -- I recommend it fully!

2 out of 5 stars Good South American Music.......1999-07-25

Not a bad album, but in my opinion it is lacking the power, the anger and the political statement of the older Inti Illimani albums.

5 out of 5 stars un maravilloso viaje al mundo del recuerdo.......1999-05-07

Clearly the guy who wrote the review above has no clue whatsoever of the story and message behind this CD. Compralo, tio, no te arrepentiras.

5 out of 5 stars Cuando presentaron este disco, yo estuve ahí, es..........2000-06-19

5 out of 5 stars extraordinary!.......2000-05-28

This album is definitely among their best ever! The arrangements are elegant and powerful, the melodies are beautiful and stay pleasantly with you, and the lyrics are nothing short of superb, with Patricio Manns providing poetry of love (medianoche, quien eres tu, for example) and subtle protest (el hacha, for example, is about deforestation), skillfully avoiding being corny or plain propaganda. Buy it now, sit down and enjoy!

Inti-Illimani is one of the finest musical groups that Latin America has to offer. Originally from Chile, Inti-Illimani blends styles and instruments from around the world. The lyrics, provided with translations into English, evoke a quiet process of nostalgia (cf. Quien Eres Tu or Medianoche).

More than three decades together have made Inti-Illimani one of Chile's great groups. On Amar de Nuevo, they explore the heritage of Latin American Creole music in lush, sensual arrangements that sound as if they've come directly from the '40s or '50s--quite remarkable for what are mostly original compositions. There's a real fresh beauty to the sound, with instrumental lines extending like tendrils over the vocals. The fact that this comes from no single national tradition, but encompasses all Latin culture, offers a rich variety of style. Once again, the band has proved the master of everything it attempts, making it all seem so easy and relaxed. If you want to know what romance might sound like, this is the perfect place to start. --Chris Nickson

It has been an enormous pleasure to listen to Inti Illimani for the past 20 years. Definitely great musicians and great recordings, to say the least. However the use of this review section as a political venue to praise Allende and call his deplorable and failed communist period in power exciting, and Pinochet's years "the frightening Pinochet years" (read reviews under The Best of Inti Illimani), can only come from the twisted mind of someone who still believes in 20th Century myths: the myth of Fidel Castro, the myth of Che Guevara, the myth of the proletariat, etc. Having survived 11 years in a communist country I know better, a lot better. All of us should by now. Unfortunately we do not. Look at Venezueza and now Bolivia, with the two puppets in power dancing to the music of Fidel Castro.
Frightening years for whom? For the communists and all members of the red tribe of disciples of Fidel Castro, of course. Today, to still call Pinochet a dictator and Fidel Castro "president" is beyond comprehension. Look at Chile today. Can anyone believe it could have become what it is now without eliminating Allende's regime and crushing the communists?
I give Inti Illimani an A for their music. Let us learn to appreciate their great music without praising their disastrous and failed political views. For that, they get capital F.

5 out of 5 stars Un album de sorpresas y con sabor a Latinoamérica........2000-05-15

4 out of 5 stars "Live direct from Madagascar -- just for you!".......2004-08-04

Salegy is a fast 12/8 dance beat that is very popular in Madagascar, and Eusebe Jaojoby is nicknamed "The King of Salegy". This 1992 album was his first to be released in the U.S. and Europe. It includes a new recording of his biggest hit, 1988's "Samy Mandeha Samy Mitady". Jaojoby is the songwriter and lead singer for the band that bears his name. The Jaojoby band plays electric instruments instead of the traditional Madagascar instruments used by bands like Tarika. The songs usually have choruses that repeat a call-and-response between Jaojoby and his backup singers. "Tsaiky Joby" and "Tsy Zanaka Mpanarivo" are also highlights; the latter includes a couple of on-purpose coughing fits in its arrangement. The sound quality is pretty decent, considering the album was recorded live onto 8-track with no monitors available in Madagascar before being mixed and mastered in the U.K. The album was co-produced by Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fame, who also wrote the liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars A keeper!.......2005-05-18

A fabulous, ageless mix of Latin jazz, descarga, salsa, Latin pop... you name it, with guest appearances by the likes of Cachao, Chocolate, Anth. Carillo, Linda Tillery and many more. It is a mystery why producer John Santos didn't have a couple more family reunions. I played the CD until the cows came home...
