First time I heard about these guys is when I was in High School. When I heard "Cult of Personality", goosebumps started to appear on my skin. Oh boy, such a beautiful and powerful album! Corey's high pitch and melodious voice did an outstanding chemistry with Vernon's fast-finger riffs and solos (I heard one time Eddie Van Halen can't sleep after listening to this)... To all, if you want something melodious but powerful, i strongly recommend that you guys buy this album!

Oh yeah, Mick Jagger did a good job discovering these guys! Rakenrol!!

Great start from a great band.......2007-05-17

This album really rocks. It features genres like r'n'b, funk, rock and heavy metal combined in unique style. No further comment needed.

Classic album, but poor remaster.......2007-03-08

I think this is a great album. I already had the original and bought the remaster hoping to have the sound spruced up a bit. However, it sounds worse than the original. The bass is muddy and overbearing, the highs sound muffled, and its got to be by far the loudest CD I now own. If you have the original, stay with it. If not, then I suggest you find one.

I have an original 1988 CBS Records version of this disc, manufactured by EPIC Records. It's a great album that I consider a "Classic". When I saw that a remastered version was being offered, with bonus tracks, I decided to pick it up. I appreciate the upgraded sound quality. The lower end is greatly enhanced. Now you can easily hear just how well Muzz Skillings was playing those great, funky bass-lines.

Just to let everybody know, the song What's Your Favorite Color? (Theme Song) has been chopped on the remastered version down to about 1:44. The first time I listened to it, I thought my cd player had skipped to the next track prematurely! The original version was 3:55 and contained twice the lyrics plus another bridge. So... if you buy the remaster, don't get rid of that old copy before you decide to keep it for that one older "full-length" track.

one of the great bands.......2006-10-19

Apart from one of the most recognisable rock songs of the 80's 'Cult of Personality' this album is something which set the pace for a whole generation of clear singers over the top of a harder rock background which has now become a normal type of music. They rock hard, play incredibly well - lead guitarist is a freak, and the singing is soulful, powerful but clear and accessible.

It has dated I think to an extent - for me because of their 3rd album 'Stain' which really sounded a generation beyond what they did on this one (and still what many do now) however it stands as a terrific rock album.

Best tracks aside from Cult are 'Open Letter to a Landlord' - which is every bit the classic of Cult really 'Desperate People' and 'Memories can't wait' but the whole lot is well balanced.

Bonus tracks on this are all fantastic - Living Colour live is as good as it gets, but there is one track: 'should i stay or should i go' which has to be one of the all time great covers - it's so redone that apart from the lyrics and structure you would not recognise it and they really rock it out- almost worth it for that alone!

Birthing black consciousness through funk and rock.......2005-11-12

Living Colour may very well be the defining band from my youth. Growing up in vanilla suburbia, this was a band that charted songs that made an impact in my school's music scene. "Glamour Boys" was the single that made it to my high school and the bass player from a band I was in covered it. That led me and others to pick up the album. "Vivid" is one of the most successful fusions of rock with political consciousness in history, and may be the best poltically conscious album by a black or post '70s band. All the musicians are virtuosos, the songwriting is strong, and rock fans see a cathartic band at work.

Looking back, there are a few things that strike me as revealing about *how* Living Colour approached making rock music from a politically black consciousness.

Living Colour embraced sampling. "Cult of Personality"'s use of samples is a creative device that hammers home the message of the song. It begins with a sample of Malcolm X and uses soundbites from Kennedy and FDR. The restricted use of samples is something that hurts Living Colour on their recent comeback work, much like De La Soul was hampered creatively after sampling was greatly restricted.

Secondly, Living Colour was not afraid to include to make some bridges to black america in their work. In a lot of ways, they came towards Public Enemy from the opposite direction. "Funny Vibe" includes a brief cameo from Chuck D and Flavor Flav or Public Enemy. Why did Public Enemy collaborate with Anthrax instead of Living Colour? Ego? Artistic differences? Desire to crossover and broaden markets? Don't know why, but I think it's a tragedy for both groups.

Lastly, many people forget how Living Colour could have been a killer funk band if they had wanted to. This is more explicit on tracks like "Elvis is Dead" on the next album, "Time's Up", but it's present on "Vivid" with tracks like "Funny Vibe" and "What's your Favorite Colour?"

Living Colour was an outstanding band that set the table for me to really examine my history and develop a far more culturally grounded agenda as a musician and an intellectual. I owe them big time for the way they went about their music. I hope more people will discover their music through their currently active reunion work.

Saw them play last night - still amazing.......2005-09-14

I literally wore out this cassette and have nearly worn out the CD. Every musician in this band is phenomenal and their particular mix of soul and hard rock was really a breakthrough when they came out and hasn't been done as well by anyone else. These guys had bottles thrown at them when opening for the Stones in arenas and not because they were playing too loud - who says mainstream music can't be radical?

They shredded El Corazon in Seattle last night - what a great show. So glad they are back :)

Some great songs.......2005-02-27

I fast forward thru this album between 'Cult of Personality' and 'Open Letter (To a Landlord)'. I do not care for most of the songs on this album, sorry, but the superior songs on this album are among the best of the 80's. 'Open Letter' is special, I play it when I play the music I really love, and I don't play music much.

When I heard of Living Colour it was the fall of 1987 when i read an article of the Black Rock Coalition and was looking foward to the release of their first album, in May of 1988 I bought Vivid expect your typical heavy metal album but with a black twist. Nothing ever prepared me for the sonic assault on my musical senses. From corey glover's soulful singing to a rythum section that actually sounded like a one in heavy rock music from Muzz Skillings and Will Calhoun and the Jazzy yet heavy as heck soloing from the best guitar player of the past 20 years Vernon Reid.I told all my friends from metalheads to soulsters to get this album, from the Zep-like riffs to the ornette coleman like soloing from Reid on "Cult of Personality" to the Bad Brains/AC/DC like thrash of "Desprate People" to the country blues hip-hop of "Broken Hearts" and the socca-rock riffage of "Glamour Boys " the lyrics make you think without being preachy and this is the band I thought (and still think)this band as the true heirs to the Led Zeppelin heavy metal mantle diverse music like they played and musicianship that is top-notch. get this album now.

A great debut release. Everyone is great. It needs to be remastered to really bring out the dynamics. If they could pump up the audio to say a Jeff Beck - You Had It Coming - intensity, then this baby would boil over!

Michael Lington's ironic inclusion of a Randy Crawford vocal version of Burt Bacharach's "Message to Michael" on the saxman's debut offers an open invitation for smooth-jazz fans to tell him what we think. The message we send might begin positively: it's a tough gig to compete with Boney James, Warren Hill, and Dave Koz, so it's a great idea to enhance your intensely soaring, doubled-sax melody on "Twice in a Lifetime" with Tony Guerrero's gently drifting flugelhorn. It's also a sharp call to take a torchy harmony role behind Brad Cole's dark-toned keyboard melody over the pitter-patter percussion on "P.J. (Pamela Jean)." Oh, and balancing more pedestrian funk jams, like "Too Good to Be True," with the much more intoxicating Brazilian rhythms of "Por Do Sol (Sunset)" helps keep our interest. On that tune, Lington's edgy alto weaves in and out of jittery acoustic guitar lines in a perfect blend of pop balladry and exotica. It's a mixed bag here, otherwise--an easygoing but unremarkable take on the R&B classic "Love Won't Let Me Wait," a Kenny G-like soprano line finding a few sparkling moments between the verses of the pretty vocal ballad "Everlasting Love." Lington approaches the power balladry of Warren Hill on one of the best genre ballads in a long time, "Sarai." Overall, the message is that while Lington makes for a powerful, very likable, and sometimes imaginative new voice on the scene, he's not yet offering enough uniqueness to rise high amid the veterans. Let's hope he takes the message to heart and develops the great potential already in evidence. --Jonathan Widran

Smooth Sax.......2000-07-02

If you like Smooth Jazz, then try this album. Michael plays his saxophon as usual masterfully. The tunes are smooth and without edges, just radiolike. Randy Crawford gives some highlights to this wonderful album.

who were these guys? Absolutely Wonderful Music........2006-08-07

I somehow acquired this album back in '90 or '91 on cassette. At the time, I'd never heard of the band, nor do I remember how it came about that I shelled out for it. Perhaps I was intrigued by the album title. At any rate I am so glad I did as it quickly became one of my favorite albums.

Somewhere along the way the tape got lost and it has been years since I've heard this. I recall listening to this a lot around the time my wife and I first met and fell in love.

The other reviewers here are right on the money about this album: it is haunting and faintly psychedelic in a sort of 1990s way. It is worth tracking down, and that is what I am doing right now.

Just listen to the song 'Lightning'. If you're a fan of New Order or the Cure or Jesus Mary Chain you will love these guys. Fantastic stuff.

You will love this CD.

How this was overlooked by pop culture, seems strange........2006-05-25

This album was enlightening to me when I was first exposed in the early 90's. It has been a go-to for me ever since. Just yesterday I listened to it again and decided to see what the state of UVS was, if the album/cd was still out there and found the reviews here on Amazon.

If you are waffling on this cd, I encourage you to take the chance and discover some of the most incredible compilations. The production lends itself to a Sunday morning, sun streaming in as you enjoy breakfast and your favorite paper. You'll leave the house smiling, and catchy lyrics in your head, and wondering to yourself "how did this slip by the masses and miss being played?"

Novocaine daydreams.......2006-01-16

UVS is Kurt Ralske's relatively brief adventure into rock n roll. Ralske was educated at the Berklee School of Music in Boston, which is hardly your typical rock star spawning grounds.

Since doing 3 or 4 albums as UVS, Ralske has gone on to doing some electronic ambient stuff, working with films, producing other bands, and even has a permanent exhibit at MOMA in New York.

Maybe the best way to describe UVS is post 60s, pre Beck psychedelia. Other than Robyn Hitchcock, nobody comes immediately to mind who was doing psychedelic pop like this in the late 80s and early 90s, at least not as succinctly as UVS.

If I remember correctly, Ralske plays just about all the instruments on this album, a remarkable feat in itself. The subject matter with this and later UVS records seems to revolve mostly around sex, guilty pleasure (the title to one of the songs), drugs (the self titled album even has a syringe on the cover), and death. You might think this sounds depressing, but this album actually doesn't come across negative, but instead has a numbing psychedelic aftertaste if that makes any sense.

The overall effect is a detached novocaine feel. I gather it's out of print now, but a great CD if you can get ahold of it.

I don't know how wonderful albums like this go out of print, but it's well worth looking for used. Not quite as good as the UVS self titled, but better than "Rev", this is a great record with that early alternative sound to it. A few upbeat tracks including "Special one" with Kim Deal from the Pixies, but most of it is mellow. Similiar to early Cure or New Order, but most like Velvet Underground to my ears. UVS is one of those secret bands that nobody knows, but everybody likes, and I have probably played every month since 1990.

As Archie Bell & The Drells once sang! Another quality Philly soul lp that didn't make the (national attention) squad at time of "try-outs". Nevertheless, with "Look At All The Lonely People" leading the way, another quality album a music company in a foreign land has had the insight and wherewithal to get on disc, now availible to all, that no U.S. music company has, prior to now. Know the former Temptation in the group? For sweet soul/soul collectors familiar with the known, many excellent "not well known" reissue lps finally arriving to market. Treat yourselves, it's buy time!

The album tells the story. This album touches peoples lives in some way or another and you'd think the songs were about you. The truth and the emotions set forth in this album are very inspirational. To this day have not come across an artist that can master the art of sincerity and emotions such as Jim Photoglo that can carry the song as if he had written it for me, and the circumstances that evolved. it's mystical.

A Progressive Texas Stew.......2006-12-21

In retrospect, the Bee's Knees' eclectic yet distinctive sound during their mostly regional run amid the "progressive Texas seventies" is hard to categorize even by today's multi-cultural standards. At times the Knees were folk-n-funk (Bill Withers without the social consciousness), blue-eyed soul and straight ahead Texas rock (Michael McDonald AND Tom Johnston), soft rock and jazzy R&B (Michael Murphey by way of T-Bone Walker) -- and yet the Knees' sound was all of a piece. These guys weren't monkeying around to show off their considerable chops; every song was delivered with craftsmanship and conviction, as well as that elusive requirement in music-tough Texas: genuine soul. It was a period when everything was up for grabs musically, and because the Lone Star State has always been a melting pot for styles -- where roadhouses bump up against hippie elements, not to mention the state's sophisticated blues-jazz traditions -- the Bee's Knees emerged from Dallas' hot Greenville Avenue scene with this inevitable sonic stew. I had to admit as a twenty-year-old that, when I bought their second album, "Pure Honey," on the heels of the hippie-folk first disc, I wasn't quite prepared for the horn-and-keyboard driven R&B sound (though the common soft-rock denominator binds these releases in spirit, as do the dreamy melancholy closers on each disc). In that sense, "Pure Honey" didn't exactly whet the palate of a typical undergraduate at the time (a period when Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe were starting to get airplay, even in Waco, Texas). But thirty years on, this album -- combined with eight bonus tracks, all from the first release -- capture a classic sound from a time now sorely missed, yet it's a sound that more than endures. Roger (?)'s soaring lead vocals might easily have landed him his own contract and career, but however that history developed (or didn't) I'll leave to more knowledgable reviewers. Just know that this reviewer is no nostalgiac, and when a record from a "regional" band that fell through the cracks sounds this distinctive and affecting three decades on, it's saying something. Especially in Texas.

He Was For Real!!!.......2007-03-16

A tragedy that he passed in 1999. However, those of us who know of him were left with quite a gift that he bestowed upon us in 1987. I was in college, and I remember hearing him tear up the Originals' "Baby I'm For Real" one night on the radio. His vocal gymnastics throughout the song quickly grabbed my attention: the growling, crooning, howling and smooth-as-butter begging that could make Keith Sweat and even David Ruffin stand up and take notice! After basketball practice the next day, I remember placing a call to a friend at the local R&B radio station the next day and begging him for a copy, which he provided on promo CD single (which I still have, as well as the full CD). "Just Call" and "Tell Me" did not disappoint either! Due to a horrific cocaine addiction, he was never heard from again after this album, but he was definitely NOT a one-hit wonder! Listen to this album and sample some heaven for yourself!

With a wondrous voice made to do battle with Luther & Freddie, Sherrick (born Lamotte Smith on 7-6-58) had everything necessary to be a hall-of-fame soul belter. His one and only album, a 1987 self-titled work, spawned the huge R&B hit "Just Call" and in that song he hits some impossibly high notes that even Luther & Freddie might struggle with. Unfortunately, he also had an awful drug habit, which derailed his career and ultimately led to his death in 1999.

The Remorse of a Bright and Shinning Star.......2005-08-08

Sherrick to me was such a soulful singer who had such a beatiful talent to share with the world, and for him to have only 1 album to his credit is without a doubt a TRAGEDY. Lots of people may not have heard of him, but for the ones that did will remember him forever. It deeply saddens me to learn that he passed away because he had the vocal talent to stand against many of todays top entertainers. Once you hear the album from beginning to end you'll completely understand what i've been saying. Since the release of the album in 1987 i've been playing the cassette until i just learn that it was available on CD, and I wasted NO time to add it to my personal collection.

A forgotten Soul Man........2004-07-20

Sherrick recorded this album in 1987 and it was one of the best R&B releases of its time. On the ultra-soulful slow jams "All Because Of You", "Lady You Are", "Let's Be Lovers Tonight" and his superior cover version of The Originals' "Baby I'm For Real" Sherrick shows he was truly destined to be a part of the pantheon reserved for the truly great soul singers. Unfortunately, a horrific cocaine addiction prevented Sherrick from releasing another album and his career was thus ended. Listening to this album today is quite a poignant experience as it makes one wonder just what heights he could have reached had he not suffered from the disease of drug addiction.

I seriously recommend this album. This is Sherrick's first and only release. Sherrick had one of the best vocal ranges in soul/r&b music. The album consists of 9 trax with soul to spare (check out the sublime "Just Call"). 17 yrs on, I am still playing this to the max. Although, listening to this specific album does bring on feelings of sadness as he passed away in early 1999 aged only 41. I only wish that this wonderfully talented artist could have left us with more, as he deserved to have more than just one album to his name. There again, I suppose quality is better than quantity.

If you like REAL soul music, then it's almost a sin not to possess this album.

I give Sherrick a 5 star rating!!
