About the Artist
This new work is a set of songs composed by vibraphonist Marc Wagnon, with lyrics by Sarah Pillow, a succesful singer in both the classical and jazz idioms. The music is reflective of the versatile backgrounds of these two artists. Marc invites as guest artists two of the most original and well known voices of the jazz horn family, trumpeter Dave Douglas and trombonist Ray Anderson. Both were voted favorite players on the 1998 Downbeat readers poll. This poetic CD also includes the fine interpretations of Tunnels drummer Frank Katz and guitarist Van Manakas; Jon Lucien's bass player Greg Jones; Ray Barretto's trumpeter Tim Ouimette; bass trombonist Phil Arnold and the voice that sings from Monteverdi to Mahler to Miles, Sarah Pillow. Marc's music is taking the fusion idiom to a new level of innovation. He writes audacious melodies and intricate horn lines over a solid funk foundation, stretching out to wild places in the solos. This CD is the return of the concept album, developing into a travel through sound landscapes, and telling stories of our modern times. It's Fat Jon, it's a tight album. He is a superstar producer, and it doesn't let up from begining to end. My personal favorite track is #5 "Darkness". It's a track to me that you can ride to and bang all day, but in retrospect, its so good, if you play it all day, you will be caught in Darkness, because its all you will know. That last statement may be over some people's heads, but whatever.
It's a great album, and should be purchased.
P.S. Wave Motion is still the best album, Fo Real!!!

Raised In Vain is 13 tracks by New York-based, British-born singer-songwriter Dave Tutin. It features some of the finest musicians in New York including Craig Snyder (who is also the producer), Larry Campbell (after years on the road with Bob Dylan), drummer Shawn Pelton, bassist Mark Egan, on keyboards Kevin Bents and Timo Elliston. Guest appearance by Eric Weissberg. Also included is a second disc - Afterthought - which, apart from some deft touches of piano and cello, is an acoustic set featuring Dave and Craig.

Melodic, eclectic, cool vibe.......2007-06-02
I heard Dave Tutin at Cornelia Street Cafe in NYC a couple months ago, and loved his band. I'm a musician myself, and (pardon the music-snob tone) it takes a lot to impress me. I bought this record, and I've loved listening to it. Interesting lyrics, great melodies, and not all the tunes sound the same. Good mix of mellow and more up-beat tunes. It's great and reassuring to know that there are musicians out there making such high quality music. I highly recommend this record.
Infectious Melodies .......2006-11-02
For me, this album so strongly calls up the best of the Beatles ( the evolved Beatles, of Abbey Road, the White Album etc.) - in a couple of ways. First, with melodies that are tuneful, hummable, irresistible, that stay with you after even a single listening, and really burrow into your brain the more you hear them. And second, with sophisticated lyrics that deal with a range of topics - travel, memory, history, Empire - honestly, soulfully, and as well as they deal with love. You really get a sense of Dave Tutin as a man in the world, who has the gift of capturing and expressing that world. And don't get my Beatles analogy wrong. Tutin has a sound entirely his own--distinctive, relaxed, in command of his material. Very impressive.
Great melodies, thoughtful lyrics.......2006-10-31
These are the kind of songs that really sneak up on you. At first you're impressed by the craftsmanship of the songwriting and the poetry of the thoughtful, sometimes poignant lyrics. But before you know you know it, you're hooked. The melodies stick in your head and you find you're singing them to yourself all day long. So you go back, listen again, each time making a new discovery and taking something from the CD that you missed before. The more you listen, the greater the rewards. The collection doesn't fit into a specific genre, and that's to its credit. Tutin's a true original. Beautifully produced. Buy it now, thank me later.
Honest-striking.......2006-10-03
Every once in awhile an artist comes along who has a passion and a need to tell a story, something important to the artist and yet something he/she feels the need to share with the world.....sort of a "pay it forward" thing. I think this is what this double album represents and it's done beautifully with a well chosen line up of notable musicians. The record is catchy, the lyrics - real, and the simplicity leaves room for interpretation. I recommend it highly!

Highly recommended. Tutin's heartfelt lyrics and music tell a story on every track.
After many listens, the album refuses to get old. I particularly like `Raised In Vain,' `Jaded Heart' and `Nowhere Near The Sea." And the bonus disc is hardly an afterthought... it easily could have been the follow-up album.
