Transmission
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
Transmission's power-pop songwriting is designed to seduce sonically as well as verbally. When this Cleveland-based trio formed in 1997, members left successful local projects to form something special. Recalls singer/guitarist Tim Brennan, "I just got sick of being in bands that sounded good but under the surface had little to offer. I didn't want to be in another dime-a-dozen radio sound-alike". The resulting songs are shimmering road maps through city streets, rural bars, desolate landscapes, and the wide open possibilities between. Upon debuting their material, the group's unpretentious and inviting stage presence and their songs' accessibility endeared them to local audiences. Immediately, the band became favorites of local booking agents and radio stations who started pairing the band with high-profile touring acts such as the Why Store, Fastball, the Flys, and Whiskeytown.
Currently self-managed, self-booked, and self-assured, the band is looking for support to further the spread of their music.

Album Description
Showcasing poppy, straight-forward arrangements and refreshingly honest songwriting, Transmission has turned in a respectable first effort. The member are veterans of the Cleveland music scene, lending an air of maturity and familiarity to material that could otherwise sound flat in less capable hands. Lyrically, each song reads like a snapshot short story, conjuring images of back county towns, mountainous stretches and love gone sour. (excerpt from Spot Magazine 1/7/99)

Product Description
Ah, those Horrors, perhaps one of the most divisive bands to cross the Atlantic in recent memory. Mindless noise? Fashion victims? Absolutely not. The Horrors are one of the most complete, intellectualized, though-provoking bands out there. This is music for youth. It is unifying in its chaos, startling in its simplicity - all those things that music fans have been bemoaning as dead and gone. And now, its up to you, dear music fans, to allow the Horrors to take you on their journey back in time - to a time when music evoked fury, evoked interest, evoked debate. A time when you spent all your pennies at record fairs trying to find the most twisted explosions of sound ever pressed to vinyl.

A fun, noisy blast!.......2007-06-10
The Horrors come across like a cross between early Birthday Party and mid-period Damned with a hint of Radio Birdman thrown in. No doubt many will slag them off since they're young and cute but neither necessarily makes musicians worthless.
Something old and something new.......2007-05-30
Ok, hard rock, meets pink floyd, meets the the munsters theme? Think Teacher leave those kids alone, meets metal in their hit " She is the new thing"
Or try this bum bum bum bum bum, bum bum bum bum bum.... the backbeat to Count in Fives....been done so many times. Every song has a super repitive beat, and is almost comical with their funny voices. I don't know whether to laugh or dance? All of their music is a horrible stolen 50's monster movie music theme....it's laughable. It's funny, but I am not sure it's creative or interesting. All the songs sound the same to me! It just doesn't do it for me.
Bauhaus Meets The Standells.......2007-05-25
Pretty good 80's tribute band, if you like the Birthday Party you'll probably like this. A lot of this reminds me of "Junkyard" to be precise.
The best songs on here are the amazing "Count In Fives" and "She's The New Thing", which sounds exactly like the Stranglers. "Gloves" steals the guitar riff from Siouxsie and the Banshees' "Nicotine Stain". You could play "Count The Influence" all day but ultimately The Horrors have still turned in a very entertaining record. For all the carping I've made about their influences this is still more solid than anything else currently out there.
SUPER FRESH AND PROMISHING!.......2007-05-23
Playing for first time the "strange house" the debut cd of the Horrors you get the feeling "Alas,i can breath again !". Dark deeply gothic and extremely sadistic lyrics with a definitely intriguing music transfer you in another world like those you experience in the deepest dungeons of your rpg games. If you have seen the video clip of the single "Sheena is a parasite" directed by Chris Cunningham I am sure you noticed some kind of perfectionism which is obvious in the entire cd. The producers of the work Jim Sklavounos of the Bad Seeds,Allan Moulder (Depeche Mode) and Nick Zinner leave no doubts about the quality of the whole work.
I Strongly recommend this cd to those the like this kind of music. Personally I love anything that brings new fresh air ... !
My new favorite album.......2007-05-19
Best album I've heard in years. Primal, noisy, spooky etc. When you hear terms like horror punk, garage, even goth, one might think "pfft we've certainly heard that before" but these guys do sound unique. They are a breath of fresh air. Loud, noisy, brash, Adams Family organs, early goth and punk, garage twangy reverb guitars, stick figure physiques. What more could one want in a band? The USA is so infantile in it's acts that even decent singers like Gwen Stephani, Nelly Fertado, and Fergie are reduced to child-like nursery rhyme vocals over repetitive beats. Our rock is reduced to whiny, bratty emo kids with the same whine/scream vocals, the same lyrics, the same production, the same haircuts. We are way too steeped in R&B and Hip Hop culture on the main stream front. Oh, and Nickelback (gag reflex kicks in) whom I categorize as "rock for people who don't like rock". Most British acts that the zines herald now are kind of poor Franz Ferdinand type clones or boring balladeers. The Horrors remind me of more pure times in music. Sifting through record shops in the East Village for word of mouth underground bands. They make a joyous noise. Bravo! Anyone else wanna chime in?

Mediocre at Best.......2007-04-22
Although not a huge fan of the Lostprophets, I bought this album for my girlfriend as a Christmas gift. I've listened to it several times and I must say it's not the best music in the world. Although there are several good songs "rooftops" the rest of the CD just seems to be the same track with the same exact screaming over and over again. Hard to enjoy and like.
Slightly disappointed.......2007-04-13
There are many alternative/punk rock bands that for some reason contain a certain sound that appeals to the masses. I grew tired and searched for something more daring and expermential and I found the Lostphrophets "Start Something" Cd.
I was very excited to hear that the Lostprophets was coming out with a new Cd. When I listened to it though, I was slightly disappointed. They traded in that unique sound that seemed hardcore without excessive sreaming and heavy metal for a more pop culture sound. Something that would more appeal to the masses, to be placed on the radio more.
The Lostprophets changed their sound to get more famous. To get more money. I'm not saying I'm mad a them, or look down on the them, I'm just disappointed that the Lostprophets would fall to the glamour.
1st listen: disappointing. 2nd listen: I guess I'll keep it. 3rd listen: WHOA! .......2007-01-06
As the title of the review dictates, my personal enjoyment of Liberation Transmission was far from immediate. I bought it for $3.99 without having heard any of the songs except Rooftops, and then after listening to it twice one day I decided it wasn't quite as good as the non-emo style of Start Something and Fake Sound of Progress but at least was worth keeping in my collection for a few stand-out tracks. But then I listened to the album once more on my MP3 player yesterday and I was absolutely astonished by how awesome it was; far better than I had given it credit for after the first two listens, and I would now in fact call it one of the finer releases of 2006. Unlike the Hawthorne Heights or Simple Plan brand of emo, this album has a good degree of sophistication lyrically and instrumentally which is not at all shameful to be a fan of. Some of the songs even have guitar progressions that adopt a style similar to that of Bloc Party or The Bravery, such as the awesome track "Heaven fro the Weather, Hell for the Company". Speaking of song titles, that's the only real downside to the album; lengthy track names similar to the ones used by Panic! At the Disco and Fall Out Boy are corny on occasion and will likely not aid the Lostprophets in getting the respect they deserve for this phenomenal album. Still, track titles do nothing to mar the musical content of the tracks, which is of the finest quality. My favorite song on here would definitely have to be "The New Transmission", which probably is a hit too for all I know since I did after all hear it playing in a mall one time. This song has a particularly catchy and noisy riff in the background, a great energetic chorus where the guy yells "faaaaaaaaaaade out", and simply an awesome flow to the melody which may tempt you to head-bang depending on your age. "The New Transmission" is probably one of my Top 100 favorite tracks of all time, closely followed in greatness by "Heaven for the Weather, Hell for the Company", "Rooftops", and "A Town Called Hypocrisy". As I recall there were about five other tracks I liked extremely also; my MP3 player was in my pocket when the songs were playing though and thus I don't know all the names of them. I do know however that this is one amazing CD; technically flawless. I really can no longer say I want the band to return to the style of Start Something or the album before it, but don't get me wrong; I do like those albums a lot and wouldn't be completely heartbroken if they returned to that style for their next release. Overall I'd say that Liberation Transmission is a solid five star album, and one that certainly deserves more than a single listen if you weren't impressed with it the first time. Highly recommended!

I don't know Lostprophets, but I just heard this album at their offical website. After listening to it, this is what I have to say about this band....
This band was OK, but too much of punk, and I usually listen to punk. Songs "Everday Combat" and "Rooftops (A Liberation Broadcast)" were the best tracks in this album. And song "4 AM Forever" had a guitar solo. Lostprofets is just OK, but great. Sometimes they can get a little boring, since their songs are usually long, like song "Always All Way", a soft track. But I will advice you not to spend your money on this.
Solid........2006-12-27
Browsing through a few other reviews, it seems important to note here that I am a heterosexual male, and thus don't care how dreamy the boys in the band look (if I even bothered to look at the band, I would slightly resent them for it), and actually like them because of the music they make.
Having been in love with Start Something, I was expecting big things from Liberation Transmition. It's a solid album, but less my style than the previous album.
Perhaps a bit overproduced, it isn't quite as heavy as Start Something. To the band's credit, it legitimately sounds different from Start Something, but unfortunately for me, I enjoy it less.
Still worth owning, though. I would give it about 3.7 out of 5 stars. It has a lot of style and I like most of the album, but I confess to liking the first track, Everyday Combat, more than pretty much other song on the CD. I do rather dislike the first single, Rooftops/title track, howeever.
For whatever it's worth, this review was written by someone who actually pays money for music.

It's funny that you say you had a song spelled wrong, because so did I except it was a different song. mine was spelled "Bad Cops Bad Charaties".. anyways, I love this EP! does anyone know where I can get the extra songs Dan mentioned you could download from Stolen Transmission? They must've taken them down.

Most of the tracks are good, but when I purchased it, I saw the the song compliment each other like colors was spelled incorectly.
Not much of a difference, still a good cd!

Amazon.com Music Reviews
As good as Orgy's 1998 debut Candyass was, Vapor Transmission (2000) kicks things up a notch. The Los Angeles-based five-piece goes straight for the jugular this time, abandoning new wave covers and creating a few fresh classics along the way. The result sounds like Depeche Mode after several consecutive viewings of Blade Runner: edgy, moody, and armed to the teeth with enough sonic bombast to jumpstart techno-goth fans everywhere. Vocalist Jay Gordon's hoarse histrionics are perfect for the band's surreal paranoia and lust; imagine a romanticism with room for lyrics such as "Transglobal spectacle with post mortem and fame / Popsicle cannibal, can you hear me?" The production by Skinny Puppy's Dave "Rave" Ogilvie is a bright purple fluid that turns Orgy's blood into a deep murk, dark but dazzling. While Nine Inch Nails and Marilyn Manson may be the most prominent techno-rockers, Orgy's Transmissions are louder and clearer.--Jason Josephes
Customer Reviews:
An amazing record from electronic rockers (almost 4.5).......2007-02-05
Although I liked Orgy's debut album, "[...]--," that one had some kind of cheesy lyrics, and I felt that the whole last fourth of the album could've been taken off, as those came off as fillers for me. On here, the song-writing's better and they do not try to come off as empty sounding this time around. The production is just as good as it was last time. It is also the more melodic of the two.
My two favorite tracks from this album are "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)" and "Eva." Both songs, simply, are perfect. The former was particularly recorded in a stellar way, and gets better each time. The latter is a great emotional track of the album, and Orgy have never sounded so human before. Another really great one is "Suckerface" which has some anthemic synths and a catchy chorus. Just about every song here is pretty good. This is by far my favorite Orgy album. Although this too goes on for a bit longer than it needs to, it is nearly a flawless record from them. This is not a sophomore slump, but what a group's second album should be mroe like. More tight songwriting, more maturity, less of the trickery.
Buy this ANY day before the disastrous blunder "Punk Statik Paranoia."
Rough in spots, but has some VERY high points........2006-11-22
Eyes-Radio-Lies being probably my pick for the top. I'm not sure if it was made into a vid, but it should have been. As for the sonics, this album does not sound like crap, as some have said. And here the synth stuff are only accents. I can tell you definitively the problem is on your end if it sounds "bad". I do think the album isn't totally consistent musically. There are quite a few completely non-rhyming, meandering tracks that don't go anywhere, some too derivative of Candyass. And I don't think Fiction is quite up to the level fans are giving credit for, though it's a good track. But it keeps returning to something quite grand, including the the aforementioned Eyes-Radio-Lies -- about two things: media conditioning and teenage illegal street racing -- and the last two tracks, which have a deeply Blade Runner slant. Think the death of the cyborg designer. In a way, there's an futurism operatic quality to some of the tracks that teeters between just right to a little over-the-top. But it's on the mark enough to recommend to fans of electronic or hard rock.
Not a real Orgy CD.......2006-04-22
This album was a huge disappointment. Orgy moves in more of a guitar-centric metal direction, away from their original synth rock style. While focusing on the harder style of this record, they seem to lose touch with their melodic, electronic rock roots found on Candyass (and Punk Statik Paranoia, afterward). The album as a whole just falls flat and sound like the numerous other "nu metal" stuff that's out there. Sure, there's a few good ones on here like "Fiction (Dreams in Digital)", "Eyes, Radio, Lies"; "Suckerface" and "Eva". But, overall I was very disappointed at the direction they started heading in with this record. Luckily for the few of us who feel this way, Punk Statik Paranoia heads back towards the same "death pop" feel that made us fall in love with them on their first CD.
Orgy!..........2006-04-09
A great follow up to their CandyAss debut! The band has an original sound that's totally kickass! I dig bands with a sound that's all their own!...
"She dreams..." of a better CD?.......2006-03-07
Kicking things off with an intro that could be in any sci-fi film, Orgy get ready to unleash 'Vaper Transmission', their sophmore effort. "SUCKERFACE" does it's job, getting you hooked and ready for more. Jay Gordon has this very unique voice and it just fits this band perfectly. "THE ODYSSEY" gets heavier, yet less convincing. Not a fan of song. The verse is crap and the chorus is even worse! "OPTICON" is one of the best Orgy songs ever, and the remixes (yes they made remixes for this CD as well and you need to buy those to FULLY appreciate this CD) are even better... "and the lies, lies!" "FICTION" was the first single off the album and it shows where Orgy was when writting this album. It's much more melodic then anything off 'Candy@$$', and while thats not a bad thing, it's not what you'd expect from Orgy. The best part of the song is when Jay says "guilty by design she's nothing more than fiction" because it's the only part of the song with an edge. "EVA" sounds like it could come off any rock album, nothing techno-glam-rock about it. It's just not Orgy. "107" sounds like somthing off 'Candy@$$' and I like it alot. A very Manson sound to it, creepy and infectous. I'd skip through the next tracks until you hit "RE-CREATION" which is one kick@$$ song, even though it's really not 'Orgy' sounding, but the lyrics are tight and the whole song, from beat to vocals, are spot on. "CHASING SIRENS" is another great songs. Not a huge fan of the chorus, a little too forced, but the beat and the verses are great...not to mention the bridge... "don't you find it strange, strange?" The last track here "WHERE'S GERALD" is a great way to close becasue it's close to the best song here. The only problem here is that they may open and close with the best, but everything in between is unfullfilling. The thing with Orgy is that, while they may never be able to turn out a PERFECT album, at least with Candy@$$ the songs that where good were SOOOOO good that the filer tracks were forgivable. Not the case here. I mean, "WHERE'S GERALD", "OPTICON" and "107" are awsome, and "RE-CREATION" and "SUCKERFACE" are good, but everything else is so mediocre that it takes away from the album as a whole. I wish I could give this album more than 3 stars, but I can't, because to me, it's really not worth it.

I do meditation every day to open 7 chakras. It used toi take some time like 20 to 30 minutes to open all chakras. But when I started listening to this CD then within few minutes all chakras started opening and lasted till the end of CD.
It is a mind blowing CD and the best ever I purchased in my whole life. I am sure that I am going to listen to this music every day.
Thanks to the whole production team, musicians and everybody involved in producing this CD. Keep up the great work. Great work Nandhi.

Those sounds...a mirror for me.......2007-07-11
Dear Customers,
Thank you for sharing these wonderful arrangements. Cave of the Siddhars. Your music is instantly translated into soul messages. Musical soul massage. I don't know if it was my conscious mind or my unconscious mind but one of them surrendered to the music thanks to the constant didgeridoo in the background. My mind remembered a timeless aspect of itself. Turiya Nada's music that for the first few seconds had sounded extremely exotic fit into the mold of my being, as a result when I combined the music with asana practice I was able to deepen in the poses knowing that I was being "cushioned" by the call of Turiya Nada. The final "Arohara" invocations of the final tracks are perfect for the ending of savasana for me...and I believe for others too.
Thanks,
Nathaniel

The Truth of Being.......2007-03-30
i remember listening to the cd before going to a healing movement class. the music and chants vibrate the truth of being. i was able to feel grounded with the ability to completely empty out into the silence of the divine. one of my challenges it to keep my feet here while embracing the inner light. this cd is very supportive of the healing journey and wherever i am in the moment. a beautiful merging of primal sounds and pure light. thank you for the gift of this cd!
Enter the magical/mystical realms :).......2007-03-12
Cave of the Siddhars CD entered my life back in May of 2006. Since then I have listened to it every day at least once. The blending of instruments and Nandhi's voice are amazing. Love it !! The resonance and high vibrational energies seem to awaken and stir ancient memories of knowingness within my being. At the same time bringing a sense of immense peace and joy. My cells dance to the vibrations. A CD that can be listened to anytime anywhere. Highly recommended. Dare to enter the magical/mystical realms of the Siddhar Masters and you won't be disappointed :)

A refreshing sound of originality.......2007-07-17
Most people would look at the title of my review and already not believe me. The thing is this: Listen to the CD and you will understand what I mean. These days there are thousands of new bands popping up everywhere that have a good sound, but then there's Monty Are I. These Rhode Island boys have a bit to offer. Their style of music is somewhat of a punk rock/post-hardcore. Yes, I am aware that is not new. They are able to use their talents in a different way than other artists normally would. For example, Ryan Muir, who does vocals, guitar, and trumpet, is able to have the trumpet enter and seamlessly incorporate it into songs. The main point is that if you looking for something a little different than the hits that flood the radio airwaves these days, I would definitely recommend Monty Are I. You will not be disappointed.
Up and Coming Act.......2007-04-21
Pretty good debut album. They sound like a mix of The Receiving End of Sirens and Over It. Yet with their own unique twist to the sound they create which makes it their own and in no way copycatting like a lot of bands out there now. If you like smart agressive rock music with the occasional brass instrument supplanted into it then check out Monty Are I. This band has a bright future.
Great cd.......2007-04-03
I loved Monty are I after fiding them on their mys[ace. All the songs on their cd are great.
Just came across, Amazingly GREAT!.......2006-12-29
I listened to this CD simply because of the other reveiws on it. I can tell you, they are all right! Its amazing and I usually dont ever go after music in this "gener". Whatever you get into you cant help but like it. A NEW FAV!!!! Between the sheets and metropolis!!!!
March on, electric children........2006-09-06
Named after their high school band teacher, their home state of Rhode Island, and the legal issues which pursued them before even releasing an album proper, Monty Are I lay down a blender's worth of power-pop/punk tunes here on "Wall of People," one of the most unique offerings this genre has seen in years.
Seeing them live is an experience in itself. Multi-instrumentalist Ryan Muir alternately strums a six-string and twirls a trumpet around like a six-shooter in a spaghetti western, while lead singer Steve Aiello rips his throat and nasal cavity apart in front of a blaring Marshall stack that sounds like it could be on fire. Their record offers up somewhat typical subject matter for the pop-punk crowd, with odes to drunken lust and love ("Dublin Waltz"), hard-hitting bubblegum choruses that will burrow into your subconscious ("Anchor and Hope"), straightforward bombshells of energy ("In This Legacy"), and even a not-so-subtle Nintendo tribute or two ("Castle Bound," which opens with a decidedly 8-bit riff), but the approach to lyric writing is much more disconnected and poetic than say, that of Blink-182.
Loud guitars appreciably make up a good portion of the sonic palette, but here they're filled out with some less conventional surprises. With production courtesy of Matt Squire, who probably had a heavy hand in sculpting some of the more baroque elements of 2005's "Between the Heart and the Synapse" by The Receiving End of Sirens, Monty Are I's less conventional elements (horn parts and video game segues) come to life rather than fade into gimmickry.
Aiello's vocals seem to have their own gravity, gluing everything together with gooey high harmonies and an overall vocal timbre that blends in perfectly with the energized punk firestorm behind him. His skill is more evident, however, on the softer tracks like the harpsichord and piano jam "Island City," the slow-burning "Just in Time," or even their unique non-album take on Nirvana's "Something in the Way," which can be heard at the band's Myspace as of this writing.
Although their style definitely lacks the soul and dimension of certain other bands that employ guitars and horns (RX Bandits, with whom MAI have toured), Monty Are I deliver a fun and listenable punk record that mines popsmithery, '80s guitar theatrics, and marching band mentality to equal degree. You can't say that about many other five piece bands. Recommended are MAI.

et in saecula saeculorum.......2007-03-31
The first track, Mea Culpa (through my fault), sounds like a Gregorian chant with minimal instrumentals. It is beautiful music, all in latin, with the vocals alternating between Floor's lovely voice and a male choir. The only problem is that it is way too short, being only two minutes in length.
There are other very interesting songs on the CD, mostly because of Floor Jansen, who I consider the best in her league, and it is a very good first effort for the group. I listen to it often just to experience her voice, but like another reviewer here, I find the extreme vocals a bit much, maybe because they tend more toward screaming than growling and some being a little long. (They got it right in Decipher!)
Back to Mea Culpa, et in saecula saeculorum is part of the lyrics and it translates roughly to "and into all eternity." As in After Forever? (Please see my profile for a brief discussion of my rating philosophy.)
Nice CD until the cookie monster interrupts..........2006-06-13
I just recently started listening to After Forever and I just can't understand this cookie monster crap in the songs! Floor Jansen has a beautiful voice, the music is pretty darn good...then the cookie monster destroys the mood! I know some people like growling; but I think it undermines the music, especially Floor's vocals. The last song on the cd 'Beyond Me' has Sharon den Adel as a guest singer. Both women sing beautifully, the song is wonderful, then HE shows up! You could edit 2 mintues out of the song to get rid of the growling and the song would be almost perfect. I would really like to see the band drop the growling and let Floor's voice soar.
Great album.......2006-05-27
I'm a huge fan of After Forever. They are a very great band. This album is a great album for a debut album of a band! Great. It captivates you from the second you put the cd in your player.
I like the intro and all of the songs. The artwork of the album is also very good.
I love the latin in the album, mixed with gothic/metal sounds, and Floor's amazing and powerful voice, mixed with the grunts!
This is just a masterpiece!!!
The dice are rolling now..........2005-10-17
Here we have the first album of popular Dutch symphonic metal act After Forever. Combining the epic sound of Therion with the dark atmosphere of such bands as Opeth, and adding a little prog to the mix, AF really have left their imprint on the modern metal genre. On Prison of Desire, you'll find 11 songs of pure emotion - be it love, sorrow, animosity or fear - supplemented with blaring guitars, double-bass percussion and some quite beautiful choral and synth arrangements. Lead soprano Floor Jansen is without a doubt one of the best ladies in the music biz, and some of her most difficult vocal lines can be found on such tracks as the driving "Semblance of Confusion", the Sabbath-esque "Black Tomb", and especially the rage-filled "Inimical Chimera", which offers one of AF's strangest yet most unforgettable choruses. On "Leaden Legacy", we are comfortably introduced to this mystical enigma of sound the band crafts - offering a stunning chorus and some very beautiful guitar passages, compiled with the theme of how our human nature is to easily conform and that we should not let our potential be overwhelmed by becoming a sycophant. With the catchy "Follow in the Cry", Mark Jansen directs his anger towards religious fundamentalists who seek nothing but power and fortune. And as a nice bonus, Within Temptation frontwoman Sharon den Adel makes a brief appearance on "Beyond Me", a remarkable ballad dealing with the concept of, if I can interpret it correctly, being in the presence of some sort of phantom.
While this doesn't quite compare to the masterpiece they would later create - 2001's Decipher - the intensity and tight musicianship (and I can't emphasize just how much this band perfects these two factors) really pull together to form one of the best symphonic metal records of the new millennium. I suggest all fans of this style of music buy it - you'd only be mistreating yourselves if you didn't.
Highlights: "Leaden Legacy", "Black Tomb", "Follow in the Cry", "Inimical Chimera", "Beyond Me"
9.8/10
This album is really something special........2005-08-15
This is one of my favorite albums, and not just in this genre. I have the rest of After Forever's albums, Epica's first, The Gathering's Mandylion, Nightwish's Oceanborn, among others but they are not in the same league as this is.
I'm not very good at explaining what I like about a song or an album, so I won't break it down song by song, but I will say that the melodies are so beautifully written that it's hard to imagine that this is the bands first release.
If I had to pick my top 10 favorite albums of all time, this one would be on it. To give you an idea of my tastes, others would include Metallica's 2nd - 4th albums, Queensryche's Operation Mindcrime, Dream Theater's Scenes From a Memory, Iced Earth's Burnt Offerings, Death's The Sound of Perserverance, Opeth's Deliverance.
Hell, I've even heard my wife humming melodies to herself from this album and she is not into this kind of music.
This album was the first I ever bought from this genre of music, and it has been a bit of a letdown because nothing else has measured up to it yet.
I know this review is a bit disjointed, but I assume you get the idea that I like this album.

AWESOME!.......2007-07-21
I found out about this band while I was flying on an airline that has in-flight entertainment. I had to buy the CD, right after I got back from my trip I ordered the CD, I had to wait a few more days for it to be deliver because I was out of town but it was very much worth it.
Great lyrics, Great Sound....Quite Unique!!!
EASILY One of the Best CDs from 2006.......2007-05-18
If you need a comparison, consider them a Pixies and Breeders hybrid with even catchier melodies. Will this album stand the test of time? I don't f-ing know. But after my first listen of Small Parts six months ago, I have not gone a week without listening to this CD. These guys are the real deal. I hope their appearance on Spider-Man 3 ensures more CDs from the LA trio.
Fuzzy guitar pop.......2007-01-09
Simply said, the album starts out on an amazing note with "Gone," picks it up again with "Small Parts," but all the other stuff blends together. They do a great job bringing back the fuzzy guitars of the 90's without sounding dated, but it can be hard to get through the entire album without zoning out.
An impressive debut.......2006-10-27
Three minute blasts of power pop with more hooks than you can shake a stick at and great shared vocals from all three band members; ex-Everclear drummer (don't let that put you off) Greg Eklund, his brother Mark and Olivia (Ollie) Stone. Whats not to like?
First and foremost, lets get this straight. By no means is this debut album perfect, in fact part of me feels it would be better as an EP or mini-album. You see, the twelve tracks here offer the listener nothing new in terms of orginality, in fact it helps that the tracks alternate between Eklund and Olivia as the whole thing otherwise would end up being quite samey. From the leading single "TV Dinner" and onwards through "Cahuenga Shuffle" and "Octopus," you start to feel that the formula has reached a point where Stone's breathy drone (a cross between Metrics' Emily Haines and a punkier Jenny Lewis) begins to sink under the weight of samey-ness and the songs start to sound quite forgettable.
But underneath it all there are moments of real greatness here, in particular "Small Parts" which on the surface sounds like a summery-pop gem but underneath tells the tale of a relationship breaking down, with the lyrics "The decay of a former stone heart / Distributed into small parts / Now I cease to glow I cannot function anymore" isn't as happy go lucky as the ryhtm section would suggest. You can't help but hum the chorus either with its "ahhhhh ahhhhh Dont go out the backdoor / ahhhhh ahhhh Thats what the fronts for / Chew me up & spit me out / I can't take anymore - Hardly what you'd expect from a summer anthem but it works perfectly. Other highlights include the opening tracks "Gone" & "Tripped", the latter featuring a melody again sung by the real star of the record Ollie, with her instantly likable vocal that wouldnt sound out of place on a Rilo Kiley record.
All in all this is an impressive debut which (with no fault to the band) really should have been released several months ago, to cash in on the heat of the summer.

Bassist and producer Bill Laswell's prolific output tends to blur his projects together in the senses. A Dub Transmission, however, leaps out of this sonic fog. It could've been called Thundering Bass, as he teams up with another denizen of deep bass boom, Jah Wobble. Recalling Laswell's Material album, Hallucination Engine, and to a lesser degree Hear No Evil, A Dub Transmission is a throbbing, shifting fabric of dub bass lines, free improvisation, and sound manipulation. Among the musicians whose performances are mixed and morphed are horn players Nils Petter Molvaer and Graham Haynes, keyboardist Amina Claudine Myers, and percussionists Karsh Kale, Hamid Drake, Sly Dunbar, and Aiyb Dieng. Add in longtime Laswell accomplice guitarist Nicky Skopelitis, and it's a wedding of wild spontaneity, digital composition, global grooves, and electronic moods. Ejigayehu "Gigi" Shebabaw guests on "Alsema Dub," giving the album a more celebratory turn than most of A Dub Transmission's deliriously dark, cyberhallucinations. --John Diliberto
Customer Reviews:
great dub.......2005-07-04
i really enjoyed this album. when i bumped it in israel in our rental car, the one that i installed a jl audio 8w7 in a 1cbft ported enclosure with a 250/1 off a sony deck, people would come up to the window and tell me the my trunk was rattling and look totally confused as to what was going on. perhaps they thought my car was going to explode?
Trumpet Renaissance.......2005-03-03
Usually, when I hear trumpets I run a mile. But this album has trumpets on it, and conversely I find myself drawn towards it, towards the trumpets. They are used sparingly, and perhaps that is the key to trumpet success; use them, but sparingly. Jah Wobble and Bill Laswell are both basssists who play the bass guitar, and they are also quite formidable in the field of serious-faced artistic ambient world music which was so popular from about 1993-1995, but which is nowadays ignored and derided and almost suppressed, viz The Future Sound of London, who are nowadays ignored and derided and almost suppressed, or the Orb, who are nowadays ignored and derided and almost suppressed. Bill Laswell is more serious-faced than Jah Wobble, despite which this album is an unpretentious, sometimes haunting collection of bass-heavy tunes which roll on for six minutes or so, and then move on to the next track, except at the end of the album when it rolls back to the first track if you have set your CD player to do so.
Firstly I shall name the guilty. 'Second Sight' and 'Orion' are rubbish, because they have organs on them and I hate organs. I don't listen to them any more and I've scratched them out of the CD and I hope you do the same, as well. 'Alsema Dub' is the stand-out, a simple, sad-sounding thing with a man singing, his name is apparently Ejigayehu Shebabaw, and he only sings a few words, and there is a woman singing with him, and it works superbly. The song sounds sad and distant but not doomy, it sounds like the wind moving across sand dunes, across cities made of sand. There are dashes of electronic piano and it sounds as I imagine north African music to sound, although I want to stress that I have never been to north Africa and would probably not like it very much.
'Alam Dub' follows a similar pattern, although with a lady singing. There's no reason to call either this or the previous track 'Dub', because the whole album is dub. It's redundant. 'Alam Dub' is reminiscent of the stuff Wobble did on 'Rising Above Bedlam' with Natacha Atlas, but less poppy and with a jazzier feel (the electronic pianos and trumpets, there, both instruments associated with jazz). 'The 6th Chamber' ends with two minutes of the best trumpets I have ever heard, and should have been the final track on the album, which could easily have been much longer. I don't know from where two bassists got the idea of adding trumpets to their music, but it's their masterstroke. Perhaps they found a trumpet somewhere, or they had a friend who could only communicate via the medium of brass.
'Virus B' and 'Subcode' are both generic, the former with a vaguely Talking Heads-esque world music feel, the latter very much a decent-quality filler track. The production sometimes sounds dated - the pointlessly time-stretched drums, perhaps an attempt to sound current - but on balance five out of seven is a good strike rate. When I go to the toilet, blood comes out. The Amazon review above describes this as a series of 'deliriously dark cyberhallucinations', which is nonsense because the mood is generally lightweight and upbeat, and there's nothing wrong with that, and the 'cyber' quotient is limited essentially to the odd drum treatments and nothing else. Trumpets are not digital, they are acoustic.
Alter state of consciousness........2004-12-30
I was trying to find some decent (ambient?) stuff to add to my collection which is dominated by industrial and psytrance (not for the feint of heart). The most chill stuff I have is "effector" by download and "the ghost of each room" by cevin key, which can still be a grating listen. I tried "music has the right to children" by boards of canada and "music for cats" by cevin key and returned them for this.
It is a far cry from anything else I have but it holds its own. It has enough moments that give you goose bumps. I love the echo/ reverb on the trumpet - an instrument I loathe to hear in any music. In fact, many of the (pretty traditional) instruments, seem treated with some sort of effect or other giving it a very spacey feel. (Foreign) vocals (also treated?) accompany two of the tracks, and are not of this world - incredible!
If you are in search of music to accompany your forays into altered states of consciousness, especially of the psychedelically inclined, give this a try. It even has two luminous (magic?) mushrooms on the cd cover.
When I put this on I can imagine being at a lapa, surrounded by bush and the sounds of african wildlife, drinking cocktails to the sound of running water as a cool evening approaches.... Very relaxed, mysterious, emotional and refreshing!
hmmmm yummy!
I recommend Ott (Blumenkraft) for those of you that enjoy this.
Bass: the Final Frontier.......2004-06-25
Reminiscent of "In a Silent Way" and "Bitches Brew", this excellent album combines bone-crunching, hypnotic bass lines with surrealistic trumpet motifs to paint a rainy night road mural of street markings, fence posts, and passing ghosts.
I wouldn't go quite so far as to rank it with such masterpieces as "Hallucination Engine" and "Road to the Western Lands", but it is definitely an order of magnitude above some of Laswell's less structured projects.
If you enjoy late 60's Miles Davis, or just about anything by Material, then definitely give this disc a whirl.
bass mechanix with bill's special spice added.......2004-04-28
this stuff really pounds on a system,it's got bill's "atmosphere" throughout the whole album, and it's quite cheap in price.buy it if you enjoy trippy, chilled bumps!

cool.......2006-11-28
This band was recently on the cover of the NME. I thought they looked like Panic At The Disco. They sound more like Birthday Party and The Cramps. They made a cool video with Chris Cunningham. I tried to add them on Myspace recently and I got all these message board messages from them, so I had to delete them immediately. But I like the songs "Sheena Is A Parasite" and "Jack The Ripper." It's cool to have a band with that organ sound. Look for these young guys to play some festivals soon! They haven't been in the USA yet. Hope to see them on Halloween.
