Ministry's early career is either a dirty secret or a case of abandoned potential, depending on how you see things--that is, depending on whether you're a dirtbag or a wimp. As a wimp with dirtbag tendencies, I can see both sides of the question. On one hand, while Ministry's early new wave radio hits were never quite as convincing as, say, Depeche Mode's or Blancmange's, or Men Without Hats', or whosever, Ministry were the only serious entries America had in the poof-wave sweepstakes (save the one-hit Combo Audio)--and they had great hooks besides. On the other hand, later Ministry rocked, which this stuff resolutely does not. Key tracks are missing, like "Work for Love" and "I Wanted to Tell Her"--so try the album, In Sympathy. --Gavin McNett
Album Description

Worth it!.......2007-04-21
I know many of you Ministry fans like to knock the early stuff, but those of us who knew them from the get-go appreciate all they've done. I have been trying to get a hold of "Cold Life" for ages to pod it. Now I finally have it along with other great stuff like "Every Day Is Halloween." This CD is worth buying.
80s Synth/Techno Pop.......2007-04-03
If you were to hand Alain Jourgenson a copy of this CD he would probably break it. Even with the 80s syntho cheese factor the music is good and fun but, not as good as when Mr. J got really pissed off. These are classic 80s tracks and definitely a must for any diehard 80s fan. Everyday Is Halloween is such a classic.
Gems of the past.......2006-08-14
I write this review because so many people are getting it wrong. The founder of the group was raised in Chicago. At that time chicago house music was on fire. I remember going to lots of clubs (i.e. Dome Room and Club Neo)and ministry 12 inch tracks were played a lot. Neo still rocks this scene. Anybody who knows real chicago house will definitely know these tracks. Calling it synth pop is not accurate.
strange, cold & ahead of it's time!.......2006-07-18
5 stars for 'Cold Life' alone! by far, it's the best track in the hole career of Ministry!!! a great one with some strange mixes of slapping funk bass & jazz trumpet plus some cold voices & guitars meets new wave synths. a strange amalgam but it works!
halloween is a classic song.......2005-08-13
both the single and +10-minute versions of halloween are amazing. it's basically the anthem for anyone who has ever felt like or been called a freak. you can feel the defiance, yet insecurities, of the outcast, and these emotions are captured beautifully in this song. such a great piece of music.

Customer Reviews:
I LOVE THIS BUT...........2003-01-01
This is a comprehensive 3-CD package of the late, great utterly brilliant SOFT CELL...BUT I have to say, if the label is saying this is the "definitive" 12"/B-side collection, then WHY didn't they see fit to include two glaring omissions for any true Soft Cell fan - I'm talking about the infamous "bonus 12" EP" included in the original U.S. LP edition of THE ART OF FALLING APART, which showcased the FULL 10-minute+ version of "MARTIN" as well as the amazingly twisted cover/medly of Jimi Hendrix' "HEY JOE/VOODOO CHILI" etc? To get THESE tracks, you have to hunt down the Import re-issue of THE ART OF... CD released a few years back - both tracks are worth tracking down - if you don't believe me, you weren't in the audience during SOFT CELL's brief 2002 reunion tour when Marc Almond sang a chilling version of "MARTIN" LIVE!!! Once again, SOFT CELL were way ahead of their time and still are - I love all the NU-ELECTROCLASH stuff, BUT we all have to give it up to SOFT CELL who did it first & much better TWO DECADES AGO!! This collection takes me back to playing all their 12" singles in my bedroom without my headphones on, trying to make that leap into Almond/Ball's...ESSENTIAL STUFF.
Wow!.......2002-06-08
Ok I don't actually own this yet, but I'm a collector of Soft Cell material and this has some great inclusions. This is A and B side material, and non-album singles. I don't want to tell you all the time (and fun) it took in getting my Soft Cell collection, but here it is in one release... seriously... I'm blown away (and ordering in another window). While I suggest those who find themselves "into" Soft Cell to never skip any of the SOFT CELL releases as they are nearly all solid in content, this release contains the singles from each of their albums, the B sides of those releases, and includes some titles only released as singles. I would say start here if you are new to Soft Cell and fill in the gaps later. And to any Soft Cell fan who has all the albums but sees a song he/she is not familiar with... its a great one ~ what are you waiting for?

Customer Reviews:
Soft Cell is the best!.......2002-07-02
Okay, I own this and I am in complete infatuation! I love the songs and can never put it down for long. It is a must have for any new wave and/or industrial fan. This is where industrial started! The beginning of dark wave, electro, and industrial.
Tainted Love.......1999-11-27
Classic. The original 'trance' music. I am riveted to disc 1, addicted is more like it. Don't care for discs 2 or 3, but #1 makes up for the price and I paid more than what you see here on Amazon. I give 5* for disc 1. If it can be worn out, I'm working on it. You can have the other two.
Man, it really makes me feel old reading comments from teens who weren't even born when Soft Cell's Tainted Love first hit the dance floor via DJ's long play mix - true trance music. Digital remastering and club mix makes this even more enticing. As moving today in 1999 as it was twenty years ago.
Today's alternative club/dance music is really a bunch of no-talents; can't sing, can't play and can't dance for people can't tell the difference. Don't quit your day jobs, kids.
Synth-Pop Nostalgia At It's Best.......1999-11-01
Brought back very fond memories of trying to do the obligatory 'Robot Dancing' in Summer of '83. Nicely Packaged (3 - Discs take up the same space as a single!). Brought back memories of Big Hair, Lots of Make-up, trying to dance with the Ra-Ra Girls in Newcastle Night Clubs in England c 1982-3. Remembered the Monologue in 'Torch' word for word! Now married with three kids and it seems so long ago!! This is much Better Than a Straight 'Best Of' Album. Digi-Mastering is good too.
Almond Rocka.......1999-08-26
Vintage Soft Cell and is the only commercially available CD that includes "It's a mug's game", which makes it worth the money right there. This song alone takes me back 3000 miles and about 15 years to Southern California circa 1985 when KROQ DJ Jed the Fish used to play this tune incessantly and I didn't realize how much I loved it until I stopped hearing it. Still think the original version of Tainted Love is the best.
great collection.......1999-06-21
