Never Get Out Of These Blues Alive [EP]

Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
The Takers officially began in February 2000, born of the ashes of the Daviess County Panthers, their singer Suzette lost to a tragic Valentine's Day suicide. Crushed by the loss, but determined to carry on, the remaining three tried to keep forging ahead as a trio.

But something was still missing.

As luck would have it, Mike C. had been casing the Sound Museum rehearsal complex, and, finding an unlocked practice space, happened upon Mike H., Chris and a large Scandinavian named John Paananen playing bass. Thinking quickly, the erstwhile Mike C. told the band he was a singer, and could he sit in for a song. The band launched into a cover of "Loose", immediately transforming Mike C from a smalltime hoodlum to a snarling, gyrating maelstrom. The rest, they say, was history and thus began the Takers. Two shows were played in this line-up, songs were being written faster than Gamble/Huff, and then lightning struck again.

Hoping both to fill an open bass spot for Arab on Radar, and to beat the rap on a paternity suit, John packed up the truck, with wife and infant in tow, and moved to Providence, RI. For the next 2 months, the Takers were lost, looking for the elusive bottom end. Recruitment in the hot cruising spots proved fruitless and the Takers had to resort to the club scene, where, in a weakened, steroid-induced moment, an even larger Scandinavian named Nick decided this was a gig he might just be interested in.

After a summer and fall playing shows and writing songs, the Takers took to Fort Apache 10/00 to record the EP Never Get Out of These Blues Alive. In another small triumph of quantity over quality, the Takers managed to record and mix 5 songs in just two days.

Throughout this period, the Takers started getting a buzz around town, opening for the likes of Pere Ubu, Six Finger Satellite and the Melvins. This buzz was not wasted on the likes of one Dave Gwiazdowski, who offered the Takers a deal with Rubric Records for a sum we're not presently prepared to disclose. After many delays, the aforementioned EP is finally in the can and is expected out 11/6/01. This will be a co-release on Rubric/Op Pop Pop.

Today, the Takers are finishing up the final touches for the Rubric debut EP, and are working on a full lengther, recorded with Mr. Stuart Sikes at Easley/McCain Studios in Memphis.

5 out of 5 stars Give me another menthol cigarette!.......2007-03-29

I've been a JLH fan ever since my ears were opened in 1971, by a copy of
"Hooker 'N Heat". Man I have never been far from that crazy JLH beat
since. The beat of the metal presses of old Detroit, the musio running
before the storm, the expectation of something bad about to break, all
handled with an aplomb that would make our saints look radical. This
disc-"Never get out of these bluses Alive" the title saya it more
eloquent than it could have been said by anyone else, pure impact, it says
to me, "yeah things are mighty askew, and we may not be able to do much
about it, so let's put on "Never get out of these blues alive" and go
about our daily lives, the old "move along, nothing to see" I write to
the beat of John Lee Hooker, and as an added bonus feature, the 7th. and
last cut of the disc has two old Paul Butterfield Blues Band alums
playing with the Hook, Elvin Bishop, and Mark Nafalin, there is John Kahn
from Garcia & Saunders roving band of musician's playing base on cut #6.
But thats what I always loved about JLH, his ability to gather musicians
around him, and school them that needs it in the ways of them motor city
blues.

5 out of 5 stars Quality John Lee Record.......2006-10-06

This is a great blues album and one of John Lee's better studio albums. Van Man shows on up the title cut, which is great. TB Sheets is one of the saddest songs very recorded. The rest of the album is pretty jumpy boogie style blues. As John Lee says this is a party album...If you can find it, Buy it.

5 out of 5 stars sounds really cool.......2002-08-24

Yes! This is a forgotten gem. Very nice stuff indeed. Whoever wrote TB-sheets (Van Morrison I still believe), this is a crying time song, thrilling. Also the duet with Van The Man Morrison is breathtakin'. And what about Charlie Musselwhite, just great. It's an old record, and you can tell, but it sounds like a real classic and as fresh as ever. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely one of the best examples of good heavy blues.......1999-10-15

This is a very powerful type of blues, with heavy bass lines and of course, John Lee's throaty voice. Very laid back, not so much down in the dumps, but kind of grinning to yourself about your own situation... what I like to call "ballsy blues." Van Morrison and Elvin Bishop both appear on this one- and Mr. Van makes a great duet voice with Mr. Hooker... definitely my personal favorite blues album...

4 out of 5 stars Fun House?.......2002-03-05

For all of you who've been complaining that there's no new, good rock anymore, I suggest you check this band out. Imagine, if you will, the Stooges as the house band in the Valley Lodge for an episode of "Twin Peaks." It's moody but not whiny, Stonsey in swaggar and presentation, bluesy but not ripping anyone off in that vein, loud but not for volume's sake.
While I believe that this recording betrays their dynamic live set (hey, they opened for Mission of Burma, so they've got to be doing something right), it's still good (keep an eye out for a new release in the summer). Unlike many bands who could could count the aforementioned Stooges and the Stranglers as influences, there's never an air of machismo. In fact, it's nearly the opposite. In a town full of tough-acting rockabilly punks and smack-talking mods, the Takers, by aligning themselves with neither camp, stand ready to shut them all up.
