Only an artist of Jay-Z's stature could have survived the indignity of In My Lifetime, Vol. 1, his stunningly poor second LP, and remain standing as one of the premier lyricists of his generation. Like Biggie did on Life After Death, Jay-Z diversifies his style here--with the Timbaland-laced "Nigga What, Nigga Who" and the dialogue "Coming of Age" (which revisits the young hustler from Jay-Z's first LP, Reasonable Doubt)--demonstrating that even when experimenting with flow, he can still crush his peers. Though the album falters notably at the end (the lazy funk of "Paper Chase," "Reservoir Dogs," and "It's Like That" could be safely cut without incident), Shawn Carter has nonetheless reclaimed his mantle as rap's leading don. --Jon Caramanica

HOW COME HAVE WE LET THIS RAPPER GET FAMOUS ????.......2007-07-07
I bought this album in the last 1998, because I liked the Jermaine Dupri's song " Money ain't thang" (the last track of this album). In the same time I bought the excellent album of Jermaine Dupri "Life in 1472".
Just and only for this reason, I own this album of Jay-Z.
According to me, Jay-Z does well at Rap just and only in the collaborations with other rappers, that have him a guest in their albums, like Foxy Brown in "ILL NA NA " in the excellent track " I'll be" feATURING jAY-z OR LIKE NOTORIOUS B.I.G. in " Life after Deafh" in the nice track "I love the dough".
For the rest, Jay-z IS USEFUL FOR NOTHING !!!!!!!!!!!
So a question rises in spontaneous way : HOW COME HAS JAY-Z GOTTEN SO FAMOUS ?
PERHAPS THANKS TO PEOPLE LIKE ME, THAT BOUGHT A CD OF JAY-Z BY MISTAKE !!!!!!
WE have to support and let get famous talented rappers like Redman, Camp Lo, M.O.P., Lord Tariq & Peter Gunz, Onyx etc, and not, by mistake, rappers like Jay-Z.
If you want to buy a nice rap album, please check up my rap listmania, just clicking on my nickname and clicking above my listmania. Here there are 40 Hip-Hop albums choosed by me just for winning people and not for fans of the mortal masochism rap !!!
I assure that in my rap albums' list you will find the best American Hip-Hop albums. There are dance beats and strong ones and lyrics just for the winninf person in the life !!!
Hard life.......2006-12-05
Many people will diagree with me, but out of all the albums Jay has done this album is the hardest for me to listen to. Because he has to many people on this album. Jay does not need a person breathing on a album with him more or less having other people on the album. Yes, I know he was introducing Beans and others on this album. The Best Song is Hard Knock Life, and that's because he is on the record by himself. I have never liked this album as much as the rest because of all the people on the album. However, numbers do not lie, and many platinum sales later who care what I think, and opinions are like butt's everyone has one. But in my humble opinion the best parts of this album is whenever Jay spits other than that I skip the rest.
The beginning of Jay-Z Superstar!.......2006-09-22
Can I get a? was the first banger off this joint, then came the full leap to mainstream acceotance with Hard Knock Life(with it's Annie chorus). After this album Jay ruled hip hop. Even when DMX came along they co ruled but Jay was never knocked out of his #1 spot till Nas responded with ether in 2001. Anyways back to this review, Jay steps his game up from where he left off with "In my Lifetime vol 1". Most of the songs on here could have been sucessful singles such as Money Cash Hoes, Jigga What, Jigga Who, It's Alright, Money Aint A Thing and a couple more. The production was next level by Timbo and Swizz Beats.
one of jigga's best.......2006-07-29
i own this album and i like all the songs.
buy it! if you're a jay-z fan you won't be dissapointed

It's A Hard Knock Life For Us (4 stars).......2006-07-05
It seems like a lot of reviewers are idiots and just want to bash Jay-Z.
Jay-Z's third album Hard Knock life was a boost in his commercial sucess. More money, more cash, more hoes...and what not comming to him. Ironically, he decides to take a dive in the subject on the song "Money, Cash, Hoes". His second single "Hard Knock Life" was a rememberable song, because it was played on the radio. No problem with that, but it was stuck in my head. "N***a What?, N***a Who?" (or Jigga What? Jigga Who?) is a fast paced song featuring Jaz-O and Amil. I have the edited version of this CD, and for some reason they took out the entire hook to the song, so I'm just left with blank spots as the chorus and Amil comming in as the song fades out. One of my favorite tracks is "Reservoir Dogs" with The Lox, Beanie Sigel, and Sauce Money. Another favorite track is "It's Alright" with Memphis Bleek, rapping decent, but the beat makes the song more enjoyable.
There are a few skippable tracks though. "Comming Of Age (Da Sequel)" is okay, but I like the first one on the Reasonable Doubt album. "Ride Or Die" and "If I Should Die" both sounds dry and slapped together. "Paper Chase" isn't all that good because Foxy Brown spits some trashy rhymes in the beginning. The well known hit "Can I Get A..." from the Rush Hour OST. I have the radio edited version of this album, but I've also heard the explicit version to the song and it sounds trashy because of it's heavy vulgarity (mostly comming from Amil).
Those are the only flaws on this album. Other than that, if you love Jay-Z or mainstream 1998 rap music, I recommend this to you.

LL Cool J's egotism is his m.o., his sex appeal, his greatest strength. He'd been on top of the world since he started scoring hits as a teenager, but anyone who's been in the rap game for five years, as he'd been when Mama arrived, has something to prove. So he came out swinging--literally--with the title track, which claims boxing trash talk as proto-rap and turns it into a declaration of ongoing mastery. Beyond that, Mama, with its ultrahard Marley Marl production, pumps up his love-man rep (the sweetly affectionate "Around the Way Girl" and an even hornier remix of "Jingling Baby") and his ego (pretty much everything else). It's mostly just old-school boasting, but damn if it isn't deserved. --Douglas Wolk

LL Cool J's "Sgt. Pepper": A Hip-Hop Must Have!!.......2007-07-24
Mama Said Knock You Out was LL Cool J's fourth studio album. By the time of its release in late summer of 1990, it helped cement LL as a long-term force to be reckoned with in hip-hop. 1989's platinum+ seller "Walking with a Panther" was met with mixed reviews by hip-hop's urban audience. The criticisms were legion: `LL had become too commercial'. `He was clearly being upstaged by rival Kool Moe Dee'. `Hardcore acts like Ice-T and N.W.A. had a bigger street following'. `Political rappers like Public Enemy and KRS-One made LL look out of touch'. The list goes on. Fortunately, LL chose to partner with golden-age production maestro Marley Marl for a remix of the single "Jingling Baby", the success of which helped Def Jam to green-light the MSKYO sessions.
Normally, LL skipped a year between releases, but Panther was just barely over a year old when "The Boomin' System", MSKYO's first official single, was released. Essentially an ode to driving slow with your radio blasting, the single sampled the same James Brown bass riff as was used by En Vogue for their debut hit "Hold On" (the radio mix of "System" duplicated it note for note, while the album version tweaked it slightly). The LP's second single, "Around the Way Girl", was a tremendous urban radio hit, where LL gives props to all his female fans: "I want a girl with extensions in her hair/ bamboo earrings, at least two pair." On "Cheesy Rat Blues", LL pokes fun at his own image, imagining himself as a washed up rapper who finds himself pelted with "my old tapes" when he visits the shopping mall.
The title track is a thunderous announcement of LL's return to form: "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years/ I'm rocking my peers, puttin' suckers in fear/ making the tears rain down like a monsoon/ listen to the bass go boom!" On the whimsical "Milky Cereal", LL gives his romantic conquests breakfast-cereal names, hearkening back to "My Rhyme Ain't Done". "Illegal Search" (originally a b-side to the "Jingling Baby" remix) finds LL touching a political theme as he narrates a fictional police confrontation. It's a smoother, LL-style take on N.W.A.'s cop-trouble rants. LL manages to directly answer some of his then-rivals on "To Da Break of Dawn": Kool Moe Dee is ripped for his "Star Trek shades", MC Hammer is likened to "my old gym teacher" and Ice-T is derided as a former "downtown car thief". Perhaps the most surprising song is "Farmers Blvd. (The Anthem)", where LL teams up with some childhood rhyming pals for what is his first `posse cut' featuring his own vocals (he had previously contributed written lyrics for the Stop the Violence Movement's "Self-Destruction").
The other album cuts are worthy, so this is fortunately not the album of a few good singles and tedious filler. LL and Marley crafted a hip-hop masterpiece to announce the 1990's, but its appeal is far from dated.
LL really nailed this one!.......2007-07-16
Man...I can't tell you how refreshing it's been to listen to a well-written and well-produced Rap album with varied and original subject matter: there isn't a single trite and formulaic "gangsta" cliché on the entire album! :-) LL Cool J was my favorite rapper from around '86 to 1988: BIGGER AND DEFFER was one of my first two hip-hop albums (the other was PAID IN FULL--even at 9 years old, I really knew how to pick `em) and I used to listen to it constantly. Although I never heard the album (and I still haven't till this day--I need to make it a point to pick up a copy), LL really lost me with the singles from WALKING WITH A PANTHER. That was a vibrant and dynamic time in hip-hop: the field was highly competitive and the music was changing rapidly. There was so much great material being put out by so many different rappers that a single lackluster effort could potentially end a career. That's why LL starts off the title track (one of the most downright fiery and invigorating songs that I've ever heard) by yelling, "Don't call it a comeback, I've been here for years!" Most artists in most genres make "comeback" albums after years of putting out shoddy material, but not so in the world of late 80's/early 90's hip-hop. Things have changed quite a bit though and now many rappers make entire careers out of putting out crap material. There are some incredibly well-written songs on this album: there are no grand aspirations (and really, I would characterize Marley Marl's tasteful, practical and never overdone production the same way) but the straightforward lyrics are still consistently clever. He has a confident and commanding delivery whether he's playing the swagger-filled lover man, the crafty storyteller, or the battle-ready MC, and he consistently has some of the best timing and phrasing that I've ever heard. This could possibly be LL's best album and it's certainly one of Rap music's greatest works. This is fun and entertaining feel good music that serves as a strong example of the surplus of great material that was released during hip-hop's most fruitful and inspired period. This is essential listening for anyone interested in rap music, and it should be really refreshing to those who were unfortunately introduced to Rap after the majority of the genre was inundated with tired, trite and predictable gangsta clichés. Another listen to this album should also be really refreshing for those of us that loved hip-hop in its heyday: it should remind us of just what made us fall in love with it in the first place. This one will be making its way back into my regular rotation.
Would still KNOCK most mc's albums OUT of the park now!!.......2007-03-07
After the luke-warm reaction to his "Walking With A Panther" album LL went back to his old stomping grounds in an attempt to rejuvenate his talents and come back out stronger. It was here while his grandmother (Big Momma)spawned the words of encouragement to her disillusioned grandson "Just Knock'em Out" and so we got this album. LL promptly hooked up with Marley Marl and together they came up with this, the 1st of 2 albums they did together. Marley's production skills were+still are legendary. His beats are bone crunching and the samples that accompany them are always original. They percussion on this album in the form of piano riffs and guitar licks were simply mindblowing as they were used in perfect ration to the rock hard beats and funky basslines. All of this was before LL even ripped a verse!!!!!! Around this time LL was in afew beefs with Kool Moe Dee and Ice-T so alot of his verses were heavy battle type rhymes were he took no prisoners. The title track alone was, is and always will be 1 of the greatest diss records of ALL TIME!! The opening track "The Boomin' System" was about the systems that heads were fitting into their cars and that whole car culture that was peaking in the early 90's. The legendary line "2 mile an hour so everybody sees you" still gets me amped. "Around The Way Girl" was huge back then and still holds its own as a decent rap ballad by an mc that has mastered the genre. "Eat 'Em Up L Chill", "Mr. Good Bar" and "Murdergram" are all tight head nodders that showcase his impressive, more amped, stronger, rejuvinated style to the tee. "Murdergram" is a live performance that will literally blow your mind, what breath control??!! "Cheesy Rat Blues" is a tale about how the tide can turn and you could be left without a pot to p*ss in and what could happen to the people that are supposedly by your side, in times like this. A very personal track. "Farmers Blvd" was a track were LL shouts out his crew and afew of them for some mic time and put it down nicely. Next you hear the immortal words "c'mon man..." and the horns and then all hell breaks loose with "Mama Said Knock You Out" exploding through the speakers. One of my all time favourite hiphop songs EVER. "Milky Cereal" explores the subject of getting laid. Nice beat and funny rhymes. "Jingling Baby" is a superior version than the 1 on the "Walking With A Panther" album, in my opinion. Marley's production is top notch. "To Da Break Of Dawn" is another diss joint where LL rips apart Ice-T and Kool Moe Dee with relative ease to be honest over a smooth hard beat laced with acid tongued rhymes that Im sure would still sting those cats now. "6 Minutes Of Pleasure" and "The Power Of God" were the only tracks that I thought were weaker back then and even more now. The last track that I havent mentioned is "Illegal Search", a humourous tale about the police and their treatment of his race but with a nice funny twist. Still after 16years this is a soundbomb. A timeless classic. He and hiphop certainly dont make joints like this anymore.
This is NOT the Original Recording Rereleased.......2007-02-15
If you're looking for the original recording this is NOT it.
The parts of "The Boomin' System" wherein the lyrics are supposed to be "...pass the Heineken..." and "Roll up a fat one..." are silenced out. The CD is fine other than that; my search continues.

BLOW FOR BLOW, L.L. NEVER SWUNG THIS TOUGH! .......2007-02-12
For all the hip hop heads that thought Uncle L had fallen by the wayside by 1990 was suckered punch with this banga. Marley Marl helped LL redeem his street credibility which led him back to greatness. This album contains his ultimate statement of purpose in the title track and one of his best skirt chasing tracks with " Around The Way Girl".
His boasting tracks were business as usual but they were as powerful as ever with "Eat em up L chill" and "Murdergram" (one of his most ferocious boasting tracks next to "I'm Bad"). Outside of the of the egotistical boasting and playerism, he does have other things to say with "Illegal Search" and "Power of God" (an ode to the higher power that works pretty good without sounding overwrought).
Few hip hop albums sound as varied and as hungry as Mama. Unlike most hip hop albums, this one has aged gracefully. Eventhough we will never L.L. like this again, this is the album where his legacy lies and where he earned the title of the G.O.A.T.

What's this? A Swedish band that doesn't sound like it was born in a garage? In 2005, the only thing more rare would be a CD copy of Neil Young's Time Fades Away -- one that would certainly find a place in the hearts of the Perishers, not so much for its volume but its profound sense of darkness. On their debut album, the young Scandinavian band sounds like a cross between Keane and Athlete, offering somber songs punctuated with tumbling pianos, melodramatic lyrics and an unmistakable earnestness that only comes from either being a member of Coldplay or living somewhere that doesn't get enough sunshine. "I've always been dreamer," sings Ola Kluft, "I've had my head among the clouds." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Slow down. And get lost in the world of The Perishers. The Swedish band's American debut, "Let There Be Morning," is a blend of emotional wandering, poetic insight and stark, yet inspirational surroundings. Their new album is due out in April 2005.

Hypnotic.......2006-08-21
The Perishers are amazing!! "Let There Be Morning" is a dreamy and beautiful album. Highly recommended!!
The best cd I've heard in a long time!!.......2006-04-23
I don't usually write a review, but when I bought this cd and listened to it for the first time, I absolutely fell in love!! There isn't one song that I don't like. The Perishers have a great way of combining smooth sound and wonderful lyrics in a perfect combination. This cd is perfect for a long car ride, working at the office or just hanging out with friends. Every song flows nicely into the next one. Even the last song on the cd is an appropriate way to end the whole collection. Very rarely do you ever come across a cd that not only do you love more then just two songs on it, but you can listen to it over and over again and never get tired of them. I can't wait for their next cd to come out. Once you buy this cd and listen to you, you will instintly become a Perisher fan for life!!
Am I weird?.......2006-04-21
I guess I'm the only one who knows of the Perishers through Sims 2. They're on the "College Rock" soundtrack. I kept listening to "Sway" in Simlish and wondering what the actual words were - eventually I had to look them up! I'm so pleased - I love off-beat bands. I recommend the Perishers (and other Sims 2 musics) to anyone.
stunner.......2005-10-31
Goodnes gravy I love this cd. Sweet melodic music the singer has a gorgeous voice. Every song is perfect.
Best new music around.......2005-08-31
I was trying to think of what I can say about this most excellent cd. At first, I thought "if you like music like that sung by Dido, Anna Nalick, Everything But The Girl Blue Nile, Simon and Garfunkel, or Peter, Paul and Mary, then you have to buy this cd". Rest assured this music collection is not for lovers of hard rock, hip-hop or the like. But if you are into mellow music that sounds great, you owe it to yourself to purchase this cd. I think this cd is one of the best I have ever purchased. Give it a try and I assure you, you won't be disapointed.

One of the great Classics!.......2006-08-03
Oedipus Tex & Other Choral Calamities is one of the must haves from PDQ Bach. This album has some of his best stuff on it including the title tracks and one of the funniest songs he has composed "classical rap" this is well worth one's time to check out.
hilarity in music.......2002-10-25
Virtually every CD that Peter Schickele has put out under the name of PDQ Bach has been absolutely hilarious. This is one of his best albums - it will have you in stitches in no time flat.
"Oedipus Tex," the title piece, is a stunning parody of (of course) Sophocles "Oedipus Rex" - from the line "the gods are ticked off and now someone must pay" to the ending chorus of "the eyes of Texas are upon you" (set to the tune of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring"), the piece is one of the funniest things I have ever heard.
"Classical Rap" - this track alone is worth the whole cost of the album. This "Yuppie" rap combines the stereotypes of rap music with Vivaldi and Bach, and has as its setting the upper West side of Manhattan.
"Knock Knock Cantata" - some of the worst jokes you'll ever hear set to some of the worst music you'll ever hear. The combination of text and setting is really hilarious - talk about form meeting content.
"Birthday Ode for Big Daddy Bach" - the more you know about music, the funnier this piece is.
BUY THIS CD.
Irreverent hilarity.......2002-08-09
Oedipus Tex is both my favorite Country/Western ballad and one of my favorite oratorios!
Classical Rap is, IMHO, the only Rap piece worth listening to.
This is one of "The Bad Boy of Classical Music", Peter Schickele's best recordings.
I am a PDQ junkie!.......2002-08-08
This was my first PDQ recording and it has kept me coming back for more.My father who hates music even LOVES it!It does take a special musician or music lover to appreciate the genius of such a man as Peter Shickele. Being a musician, I have performed numerous PDQ works in the past and they are extremely difficult.Oedipus Tex is by far the most ingenious album created, in my belief, in as far as its contents and musical professionalism.
Brilliant parody.......1999-10-16
Oedipus Tex is a brilliant parody... I had a teacher listen to it once and then it circulated around the entire English department. "Classical Rap" is a wonderful piece as well.

ami stewart the original queen of disco.......2002-02-06
this lady was doing her thang long before disco became truly popular. Her voice can belt out a tune with true diva like style or can produce the most calming pretty tune. This album is excellent because it demonstrates these qualities in genorous amounts.Light my fire will always belong to this lady, she made it her own.Paradise Bird is just so seventies it isn,t true,Her voice floats and glides sexily over a lush tropical forest backdrop complete with a melody that lifts you away with her. Bring it on back to me is one of those catchy songs that gets inside your soul and puts modern day tunes to shame. Knock on wood takes you back to the seventies school discos so many people remember with such affection. And the album finishes superbly with the haunting and beautiful track friends. Those of us who remeber her television appearances will always recall her amazing visual performances and stunning looks. One gifted lady.
This is more like it........2000-04-19
This is a real treat-all the full length dance hits from Aimii Stewart's brief appearance on the disco scene. Her version of "Knock on Wood" has become one of the all-time disco standards, and is here in all its glory, together with 12" versions of "Light My Fire" and "The Letter". The album also includes the best tracks from Aimii's two disco albums, such as "Paradise Bird", "Jealousy" and "Step Into the Love Line", each one as good as the released singles. It wisely misses out all the duff tracks from her albums, although I could have done without the lame cover versions that do not showcase her belting vocal talents at all. Sadly, the cracking "He's a Burglar", has been omitted, which would have made this the absolute, ultimate collection. Oh well.... there's still no better Aimii Stewart CD on the market, so go get it!
DANCIN' FOOL.......1999-07-07
Amii's back for more! 'though her selection seems beneath her obvious talents as a vocalist, she gives it all she's got in these pleasant dance renditions of familiar tunes. Yes, at times she sounds like she is singing from inside an aquarium - in fact, she may be!

Perhaps no female group marketed out of Nashville is as puzzling as Shedaisy, the Mormon siblings who named their trio after an American Indian word for "my sisters." Wrongfully compared to the banjo-and-fiddle-driven Dixie Chicks upon the release of their debut album, The Whole Shebang, in 1999, the Osborns emerge on this follow-up in all their full-blown poppiness, leaving not only the Chicks behind, but also such vaguely country performers as Faith Hill and Martina McBride. Far more beat-heavy and rhythm-based than the album that produced the hit "Little Good-Byes," Knock on the Sky showcases more of their impressively intricate harmony vocals and attitude ("Get Over Yourself"), the latter finding more in common with Britney Spears and her ilk than any Nashville counterparts. It says a lot that Richard Marx shares a writing credit with chief songsmith, Kristyn, on one of the album's most memorable and melodic tunes, "All Over You." But while much of the program gets the blood pumping, the majority of songs have the depth of a birdbath, and often sound constructed, not written, with a reliance on hokey sound effects such as a scanning radio dial and a not-too-credible tent-revival preacher. Granted, Shedaisy court the younger audience, but why should a teenager settle for mere grooves and harmony, no matter how skillfully it's layered? --Alanna Nash

She-lipping a bit.......2007-07-25
This is another good pop/country CD from SheDaisy, but it is not as good as their first album, All Mixed Up. This album has some good tracks, but also a number of tracks that are pretty trite. Some of the uptempo tracks come off as more noisy and less smooth than was the case in All Mixed Up. Sound effects appear in some songs that kind of break those songs up, make a disconnect. So overall this album doesn't grab the listener as much as did their first album. There's still quite a bit of good ear candy throughout tho. Good tunes:
I'm Lit
Man Goin' Down
Everybody Wants You
Turn Me On
SHeDAISY try something new.........2007-06-17
The start of this cd, "Mine all Mine", is a beautiful song to begin with.. however it's very different from their previous stuff, with lines such as "it's been a long night chasing ghosts" and "But the chance has come and gone". It's clear that this album is about regrets, missed chances and heartbreak. However, there are a few funny, tounge in cheek songs, such as "Get over yourself", and "Man goin' down". The best songs on this album are ones that talk of feeling "the rush of love" (Rush), "Seductive highs, destructive lows" (I wish I were the rain), and "'Cause there's no resolution Or clear cut conclusion" (The First To Let Go). SHeDAISY try something different here, and while it works on some songs like "Rush", "Mine all Mine", "I wish I were the Rain", "Keep Me", and "The First to let go", the other songs are not up to par. However this is a must-have album for any SHeDAISY fan. It's raw and heartachely beautiful.
Why wasn't this more Popular exactly?.......2006-10-31
SHeDAISY's first album, "The Whole SHeBANG" was incredibly popular but this one wasn't.. They called this their "experimentation" (or something close to that) album.. it turned out good! But I guess people weren't liking the Pop sound it had to it and I think a lot of people were turned off by the Remix CD they made of The Whole SheBang. I don't understand why this wasn't more popular, especially after The Whole Shebang was such a smash debut album.
My two favorite songs on this CD are "I'm Lit" and "Get Over Yourself". The rest of the songs are excellent except for "Rush" and "I wish I were the Rain" (they are good, but not overly great) but I can listen to every song on this album because Kassidy has such a awesome voice and Kelsi and Krystyn have such good harmonies with her. This CD, like every other SHeDAISY CD/Song, is a winner!
Also, FIRST TO LET GO is a GREAT GREAT song!
BORING.......2006-05-28
Shedaisy does NOT have the staying power. In a few years everyone will be saying "Shedaisy WHO?" Their music is very forgettable!
Give knock a chance.......2004-11-17
I'm a huge Shedaisy fan, and I had very high hopes for this cd and when I bought it I was not disappointed! I know that the reviews it has had said it was awful but I really don't see where they got that from, every song on the cd is beautifully written and performed. I gave it a chance and I love it.

One of the more hauntingly visionary indie-rock artists, Bill Callahan, a.k.a. Smog, writes sparse, poignant songs that shimmer with solipsistic grandeur. His sixth full-length disc, Knock Knock, shivers with restlessness, recounting forlorn tales of imprisoned convicts ("River Guard"), disenfranchised country boys ("Hit the Ground Running"), and unrequited love ("Left Only with Love"). Smog is too well-produced to qualify as lo-fi anymore, but the rich strings, chiming piano, and baleful strums of Knock Knock never detract from the workingman's loneliness of the disc. Like Neil Young's Tonight's the Night, only without the nasal vocals, the album is serene and sedate but nonetheless unsettling, as if the collective scene Callahan creates is merely the calm before the storm. Fortunately, when the melodies seem to drift too close to comatose, the shuffling beat and drifting feedback of "Held," the distorted chug of "No Dancing," and the jangly strum of "Cold Blooded Old Times" keep the needle from flatlining. --Jon Wiederhorn
Customer Reviews:
Callahan as Kafka..........2005-12-14
I'm referring to the beautiful third track, River Guard. In it, he makes every sparse poetic line jump out in importance. He begins by "taking the prisoners swimming," which immediately puts him in the role of providing comfort to all of us having been found 'guilty.' That is the condition as K., Camus and countless other writers have suggested. We're born, hence we're condemned. Callahan's guard later sits "in the tall grass" and looks "the other way." He shows a wonderful simplicity here and is conscious of being in an embarrassing situation, not wanting to be constantly watched. It's a song of reprieve. But it's not all about the lyrics. The melody, texture, attitude and overall recording is beautiful. With the philosophy, it's aproaching a contemporary masterpiece. The chorus seems to ask the question, would we even know the definition of freedom if we weren't born into this very difficult existential situation? Like those writers before him, he suggests that without the suffering, freedom would have no meaning. He continues the theme within the guitar crunchiness of No Dancing: "there's always some bird dog snufflin'... always some turtle snappin'." Later in the album he sings, "I don't know where I'm going/All I know is I'll hit the ground runnin'." It's the secularist singer/songwriter at his very best. Listen to this album along with his other moments of brilliance found on the albums Rain on Lens, Dongs..., Supper, The Doctor..., A River..., and Red Apple... Not only does he continue these same themes, he does it in a very catchy, musical, emotional and often rocking way.
Bill is his real name.......2005-04-05
Yep. That's right folks. Bill Callahan to be exact. The man who calls himself Smog on all his records. A hero to the lo-fi world. An obsessive four tracker in his early days. A soothing easy listening singer/songwriter as of late. Most people don't know that he's been making albums for the past 15 years. A very prolific artist indeed. This album, in particular, is his pinnacle. The best overall work by him. He's come full circle from the early days of the Julius Ceasar LP. I'm not sure what the highlights are to me. Each song flows so well, it almost works as a rock opera epic to me. If I had to pick one I'd say its "Teenage Spaceship." Although being downtrodden it has this tender feeling that not many other Smog recordings have had in the past...or future for that matter...since I'm writing this now and not when it came out. This album is one of his more eclectic works in his extensive collection. He has a band backing him on some songs this trip around. We hear a childrens choir, bill dabbling with alt-country, sax's, and strapping on that plugged in electric. He often gets described as a depressing artist, but this is his most hopefull release or certainly in the running for first place. I don't think Bill will ever dissapoint me. Which is fightening not only from a musical standpoint, but for my wallet as well. If you haven't bought a Smog record yet, make this your first.
I HAD TO LEAVE THE COUNTRY.......2004-11-11
In the past, Smog has created dark and introspective releases, relying too much on meloncholy and self absorbtion to try and convey emotion. On this album, he takes a witty, almost cheeky, approach to much of the subject matter.
Definitely his most accessible and most light hearted release, Smog brings together his best collection of tunes on Knock Knock.
His southern drawl and lazy performances give the album a real personality, but dont detract from the obvious enthusiasm he has for his work.
Callahan (on this album) kinda comes off like a Bonnie Billy who takes himself less seriously. This can be a welcome change in the alt. country genre, and lifts Smog outta the pack and shows him up to be the crafty songwriter, and character, that he is.
Like staring into a dark, wonderful abyss........2004-10-02
Smog is not a band that can be explained. Instead you must simply experience Bill Callahan's world for yourself. The music is haunting; it is chilling; it gets under your skin; it's like an infection...but in an an indescribably good way.
While the likes of Cold Blooded Old Times (High Fidelity anyone?) and Hit the Ground Running might be the most accesible they are not necessarily the best songs on the album. For me, River Guard is the second best song because it paints the most beautfiful scene in my mind of calm water reflecting moonlight back into the dark night while black trees press in from the banks. And the crowning jewel is Teenage Spaceship. This song ranks in my list of top 10 (maybe even top 5 if I think about it hard enough) all-time best songs. It is perfect. It is a summation of so much: life experiences, maturation, beliefs and dreams as they live and die, and more.
Smog is not an "easy" band. But moment you "get it" is truly a moment of serendipity.
Best Record Of The Decade.......2003-04-19
Picking my favorite Smog album is much like asking someone to select their favorite child. For more than a decade, Bill Callahan has put out some of the most compelling (and often under-appreciated) music, period. Knock Knock takes everything great about his past output and melds it seemlessly into easily my favorite record of the nineties: A sly sense of humor; experimentation that doesn't come off as needlessly self-indulgent; beautiful, haunting melodies and a sense of space between the words and notes that is just as important as the music itself. Callahan's lyric's are full of poetically clever, but very, very real analogies and specific life-altering moments from his character's (his?) past that can make even the most jaded listener re-think a universal subject such as love or childhood memories. The song, "Let's Move To The Country," is a classic album opener, setting a hopeful tone you just know will gradually be marred by life's dissappointing reality by album's end (This is also my 2-year old niece's favorite song, with its childlike innocence: "A goat and a monkey, a mule and a flea"). All along though, Mr. Callahan tells it with a knowing wit, driving spikes into our hearts with personal details in his narrative and subtley-unique touches in the music rarely found in popular music. For my money, there is no more perfect record.

James Mathus made his name playing kitchen-sink ragtime with North Carolina's Squirrel Nut Zippers, but beneath that dapper zoot suit beats the heart of a Mississippi mauler with tobacco in his cheek and a porch beneath his boots. Dirty, Southern- fried, and gritty as the river that takes its name from Mathus's home state, National Antiseptic is pure blooze rawk powered by whorehouse keyboards and greasy guitar, and peopled with drunks, losers, highly questionable menu items and, of course, those infamous Southern women for whom a fret-burning corker such as the Knockdown Society's "Call Your Dawgs Off" is as close to a love-song dedication as they'll ever get. Second cousins of the similarly raunchy Southern Culture on the Skids, Knockdown Society's National Antiseptic scores one for Delta backwaters with a wink and a hefty dose of boogie. Somewhere, a pickup truck with a gun-rack has found its soundtrack. --Kim Hughes
Customer Reviews:
ah, jimbo, why can't you win?.......2007-02-14
really, skip this half-baked jam session and go buy "Stop and Let the Devil Ride" (which inexplicably sells for like $28 or whatever on here). that's the album that will make you realize jimbo mathus is the unsung hero of drunken southern boogie rock. this album, however, just ain't got the grit, man, the swagger of that other gem.
Soild effort.......2002-11-09
This is a fine album somewhat in the vein of The North Mississippi All Stars. Mathus' album is produced by Jim Dickinson, amonth other things father of 2/3 of NMAS and Mathus himself appeared on Buddy Guy's superb "Sweet Tea" album. And therein lies the rub. While this is a solid affair and Mathus' guitar and voice are solid, it doesn't have the driving bottom end of the NMAS releases or Guy's album. Even with a cover of RL Burnside's "Snake Drive" this isn't quite as slamming a Mississippi hill/country blues affair. To be sure a lot of that is by design and it's not as if there aren't some moments where a monstrous boogie is achieved. But if you expect NMAS or Burnside/Kimbrough stomps look elsewhere. While those artists offer a mammoth groove on almost every track, Mathus lays back a little more, tends to keep the bass a little quieter and takes on more country stance. It will grow on you as an album too. Just accept it for what it is. The idea expressed in other reviews that it's a back porch affair is right on. As such the laid-back vibes is appropriate and it is certainly the work of someone making the music they love.
Enthusiastic electric.......2002-08-24
This CD is one of those that just keeps growing on you. After his success with Songs for Rosetta, Mathus follows the acoustic album with a hard-driving electric one. Songs for Rosetta was a tribute album and one where Mathus explores his roots. National Antispetic proves that Mathus can do what all good artists have to--grow on those roots. This seems to be a natural progression.
Mathus played electric guitar long before the success of the Squirrel Nut Zippers, and he is shortchanged often by listeners who place him in a particular genre or style. He is a lot more than a "retro player;" he is a vibrant player on the regional and national music scene, and a guitar player and vocalist of amazing skill (he has also played the piano, trombone, mandolin and banjo in recording sessions before).
National Antiseptic is an album which seeps an enthusiasm and joy of music--what it can do to you, what you can express with it, and what makes it important. And part of that comes not only from Mathus himself, but from his band, Knockdown Society, who play with that same vitality and then can stop on a dime.
Mathus' Talent Shines.......2002-03-04
The eclectic talents of James Mathus take center stage on his second solo release, National Antiseptic. Mathus' primary band, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, remain a popular band from the swing music resurgence of the mid 1990's. Though the Zippers, who Mathus fronts, were the most creative and talented of the pack, they still have faced tough competition in the land of teen pop and pretentious rap/rock. As a result, Mathus has taken several side projects, including a stint as Buddy Guy's guitarist a solo project, Play Songs For Rosetta, and now National Antiseptic.
Mathus' greatest strength is his flexible voice. He croons like Harry Connick Jr. on tracks such as "Rock of Ages." He then shifts to a hard-edged bluesy howl, wonderfully exhibited on "Take a Ride" and "Hambone." Finally, Mathus gives the listener a twangy country voice on tracks such as "Back to the Bottoms" and "Innit For The Money." In all cases, his voice has a depth and character that immediately entices the listener.
Another standout musical element is Mathus' guitar playing. Though primarily a blues album, Mathus' rockabilly and swing guitar style is evident throughout National Antiseptic. The fusion makes each song interesting, even simple folk songs such as "Nightingale."
James Mathus made every track intricate on National Antiseptic. Even the most simplistic blues songs, such as "Boogie" have wild drum beats, melodic guitar lines, and pumping bass lines. Mathus' version of blues is more akin to Jimi Hendrix than B.B. King. The eclectic collection of songs also makes the album solid from start to finish. As his tastes vary, so do his songs. The listener is treated to country, folk, and swing songs in addition to blues.
The best songs on National Antiseptic include "Take a Ride,"Snake Drive," "Rock of Ages," and "Back to the Bottoms." Each has a distinctness about it that makes it jump off the album. Weaker tracks consist of "Innit For The Money," "Spare Change," and "Chicken Town." They rely too much on instrumental jams that inhibit Mathus' vocal ability.
Because of it's varied content, National Antiseptic is not an Earth-shattering album. It does have several excellent songs, however, and every track has something original to offer. James Mathus, as always, dares to swim upstream, fighting the copycat success formulas of many of today's artists. He doesn't worry about fitting into a certain category, or selling records. His concern is only with writing good songs, and he continues to succeed in doing so.

Don't call it a comeback!.......2005-09-18
This CD contains four versions of L.L. Cool J's #17 hit, "Mama Said Knock You Out". It's a great rap song. The four versions of the song here all have the same rap by L.L., but they all have different instrumental backing tracks. Here is the track listing:
1. "Mama Said Knock You Out" (Original Recipe)
2. "Mama Said Knock You Out" (Hot Mix)
3. "Mama Said Knock You Out" (For Steering Pleasure)
4. "Mama Said Knock You Out" (7 A.M. Mix)
Classic Joint.......2004-07-01
One of Cool J's best singles, this song delivered the timeless hook "I'm gonna knock you out! Mama said knock you out!" Cool J had a lot of emotion in his music back in the day, not sappyness (except for "I Need Love"), I mean anger emotion! This is one his hardest rap songs up there with "I'm Bad" and "Rock the Bells" before he went all soft. His delivery wasn't the best in this particular song, but this one's still a timeless joint.
