    I haven't purchased the CD but the picture of the inside of a church on the cover is not of a British church, like one would assume since it says its a recording of British choirs. This picture is of Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Just thought i'd let you know. I'll be honest; I'm one to judge things by it's cover and if the company took such care to choose a 'British' church for their British choir CD, I'm willing to bet the music is equally well selected... I'm being sarcastic. But I gave the product 5 stars because I didn't want to hurt its ratings just because i'm cynical. But check out the church if you're ever in Montreal, it's truly beautiful... here I'm not being sarcastic.

          The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.

          I purchased this years ago and the enjoyment has grown every Christmas. Handel's Messiah is beautiful, The Nutcracker is a classic and the arrangement of hymns conveys the true wonders of the season. While there is a place for pop carols, these classics should be in every Christian's music library. I loved this so much, I actually purchased a complete replacement set when I lost one of the discs. Certainly an excellent value that any music lover would treasure.

          The gifted Richard Hayman (Boston Pops arranger for more than 30 years) offers an interesting collection of holiday favourites. The back cover says "Orchestra and Chorus" - beware, there is no chorus. The sub-title "Philharmomic Symphony Orchestra" is rather pedantic. Why not simply "Richard Hayman and His Orchestra"? The opening and closing numbers are sing-along medleys... the liner notes offer the words. Two Leroy Anderson numbers receive a fair treatment: SLEIGH RIDE and SONG OF THE BELLS, the latter being played rrather slowly. There is a beautiful rendition of MUSIC BOX DANCER, the only version I know that uses the music box. The counter-melody is too loud and takes away the charm of the main theme. A few compositions by the conductor himself. A great collection for tree-trimming, whistling or singing along.

            The accompanist for this spectacular evening was Irwin Gage, whose masterful artistry catapults this recital into the "A"-class. This recording reveals a young Jessye Norman in superb form. It is a pity that the recording firm neglected to honor Mr. Gage's contribution.

            This is my favorite record by Jessye Norman -- and only SIX BUCKS! Some people are afraid of this series on sonic grounds, but this one (and most I have heard) is excellent. It's live and you will note a splutter or two but the concert is mostly well balanced and Jessye is well accompanied.The programme in particular knocks me out, the pieces contrasting enough to make repeated listening easy. Standouts are the Ravel songs and There is a Balm in Gilead, but when she opens with When I Am Laid in Earth you aren't going anywhere for the next hour. When Jessye came along I liked the big voice but felt there was a lack of artistry -- an unsophisticated judgment it would now seem. But roles like Belle Helene and Penelope gave her more variety of tone and when I finally saw her in concert I was unprepared for the spectrum of songs and arias she can sing. I wish I was at this concert though, here is a rare case of a CD exceeding even my memory of the real thing!
