Circus Magazine
"Today's Gothic scene has many faces. As long as the right vibe is present, instrumentation can be blissfully sparse. Take for example Paris By Night, the brainchild of Texas native Jeanine Acquart. Electing to go with only guitars, drums & bass, Ms. Acquart's vision has arrived front & center on her latest...While her melodies are haunting and seductive, the laid back feel of the band places a delicate twist on the whole thing. But they also prove they can rock on "America (Jam)", an early Pretenders-style number featuring some down & dirty blues licks form lead guitarist Rico Blythe."
About the Artist
Now hailing from New York, by way of San Antonio, Texas, Jeanine was part of an acclaimed choral group that traveled throughout central and eastern Europe. In 1994, Jeanine was voted San Antonio's Musician of the Year, as well as Best Female Vocalist, Best Songwriter, and, not surprisingly, Sexiest Female Artist. Around the same time, Jeanine began to perform and travel throughout the United States, seeking the right combination of musicians and atmosphere in which to further pursue her music.... read more
Album Description
Taking pop music to a new, dark, and passionate level, while maintaining its own warm, irresistible tone, Paris by Night is the creation of Jeanine Acquart. Thought often accompanied by accomplished musicians, Paris is unquestionably driven by singer/songwriter Jeanine's own intensity. The dark rock sounds created by Jeanine come by way of minor-tinged chord progressions, edged between despairing and hopeful tones. Song lyrics deal with disguised cynicism, self-condemnation, dark hope, and mortality - all gathered together by Jeanine's powerful vocals and vision.

For his second solo release, the former Three Irish Tenors member has decided to concentrate on songs of faith for which, given his oft-repeated history of triumphing over various obstacles, he would seem to be ideally suited. As on his debut effort, the orchestral arrangements are florid and the context strictly middle-of-the-road. For many listeners, his 9/11-vintage, a cappella rendering of "Amazing Grace" was a high point of his career, and one or two more sparsely arranged or even unaccompanied tracks might have been perfect for this album. There is no material of deeply Celtic context, other than "Morning Has Broken," a song associated with British folk singer Cat Stevens which was in fact lifted note-for-note from a Scottish Christmas carol called "Leanabh An Aigh." Tynan performs it as a duet with country star Vince Gill, who actually sounds more in synch with the soaring folkloric purity of the melody. Basically, Tynan is a fine example of what a pop tenor should sound like; as with Andrea Bocelli and others of that ilk, he aims to please and this he does surpassingly well. --Christina Roden

Customer Reviews:
Great voice, lovely person........2007-05-22
Ronan Tynan has one of the great voices of our time. These selections are thoughtful and wonderfully performed. An absolute pleasure to listen to.
Disappointing audio quality.......2007-03-09
This recording did not have the depth, clarity or inspiration that the "Ronan" CD has. There's just no comparison. The songs of course are more gentle and thoughtful, but the recording just doesn't show me the quality and "ring" of Ronan Tynan's voice. Good, but not great. "Ronan" on the other hand was exceptional!
Great Gift.......2007-02-13
This was a gift for a neighbor who is a big Tynan fan and she loved it.
Brief Review.......2007-01-10
About the same quality as "Ronan" which was also a very strong album, the use of the word 'awesome' is not overstating how great this CD is...
Ronan Tynan, The Dawning of the Day.......2007-01-09
This CD fits a quiet, contemplative mood. The songs are
done so well by Ronan - what a great voice!

A beautiful voice - wasted.......2007-07-10
I was introduced to Mary Fahl via October Project. I had never heard anything like them before or since and Fahl's voice is nearly beyond compare with anyone else, though as an earlier reviewer said, Annie Lennox and Carly Simon come close. I just don't think they have Fahl's range.
So, you can imagine after October Project's demise, I was looking forward to hearing more of Fahl. After-all, a voice like that just can't be silenced.
Too bad it wasn't - at least for the garbage on this album. Redemption is probably the only song that shows what she can do with her voice. The rest is just a waste of her talents. God, I certainly hope she does not go down the same road that Karen Carpenter did and make everything she sings sound like a funneral dirge. She's trying very hard with the muck written for this album to do just that. The writing credits alone should have been enough to give it away right there. HOW many people does it take to write ONE song? Apparently as many as want to have a say in it for this disaster. Listen, if you start getting more than two people tossing in their two cents worth on any one song, you had better consider not writing it, much less trying to sing it. It is going to sound like a collage of miss-matched ideas and influences. Gee - just like most of the music (if you can call it that) on this album! I certainly hope that Mary Fahl will be able to find another record label willing to take her on when her current one dumps her for this waste of money and resources - with the priviso of course that all she does is sing the songs a talented songwriter creates for her.
only 3 good song.......2007-01-11
still, october proyect is the best and her voice is the best, but this cd is not the greates but think about if you like her and then buy it.
Beautiful and Perfect.......2007-01-09
The more I listen to this cd the more I am entranced with it. I have enjoyed Mary Fahl's voice since October Project. I am eagerly awaiting some more new material. She has a very powerful and touching voice. I gain something new each time I listen to her voice, music and lyrics. Thank you Mary!
Emotional Voice.......2006-06-09
Since when the founder October Project came to an end, Mary's voice was already one one of the highlights of the band. And this is proved here. A very good debut album!
Style departure.......2005-08-14
Like previous reviewers, I too was sceptical about this CD."The
Great Unknown" seems to be an October Project track right off, billowing, inspiring and lush, you would never know the difference. It is my favorite. The rest of the songs really take a departure in style from what I am used to hearing from Mary. Though enjoyable, she seems to be searching for an audience. I hope she continues to put out sounds which can inspire and provoke thought in their writing without getting too sentimental. Pretty girl, great voice, don't let them change your style.

This is James Galway's first CD with a new label, and it presents him at his most lyrical. Every selection is long-melodied and soothingly played, including an interesting transcription of the 2nd movement of Rodrigo's Concerto de Aranjuez. Who would have guessed that a flute could substitute so handsomely for a guitar? Schubert's "Ave Maria" is mellow and sweet, Brahms's "Lullaby" is nicely accented, and he's well-matched with his wife in the "Barcarolle" from The Tales of Hoffmann. Two bonus tracks offer the world premiere of a haunting suite from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, composed by Howard Shore, and a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song," perhaps Galway's most famous piece. Along the way, there's a mesmerizing transcription of Ravel's "Pavane pour une Infante défunte" (originally for piano), a moving version of "Che faro
" from Gluck's Orfeo ed Eurydice, and more. Fans of Galway's won't want to miss this relaxing, beautifully recorded CD. --Robert Levine

Soothing..........2007-05-06
I suppose that James Galway is about the most reknowned flautist of our time. I would file this CD under the category of "light" classics. As such, it is a masterpiece. Not only does every track feature a beautiful melody, but as a whole the recording creates a mood of peace and calm. It is utterly soothing and relaxing. Of special interest for all of you "Lord of the Rings" is a suite based on thems from the movie trilogy. It has an appealing Celtic feel.
This CD takes you from the busy world and puts you out in "space".
James Galway's triumphant Deutsche Grammophon return.......2005-02-27
Fans of James Galway may not realize that he recorded on Deutsche Grammophon in the past, as a key member of the Berlin Philharmonic during the early 1970s; this CD is a splendid "return" to this recording label. It is a brilliant mixture of classical and popular music, representing Galway's uncanny ability of playing superb "Mood Music", aided by ample orchestral support from the London Symphony Orchestra. Among the bonus tracks are a new version of John Denver's "Annie's Song" for which Galway has earned ample worldwide recognition and a haunting suite from film composer Howard Shore's scores for "The Lord of the Rings" film trilogy, playing themes associated with the Hobbits and their beloved The Shire.
Some Good Galway Crossover Selections.......2004-12-28
This new recording Sir James's First for DG in quite a long time.
Is a selection of uplifting pieces of music arrainged for flute
and orchestra. Ably abbetted by the LSO and assisted by his wife
Jeanne, who plays quite well too, Sir James shows that he can
still play the flute and the tin whistle with more than enough
talent and feeling. While some people may condemn this as "mood"
music, I find it quite refreshing. Although I can still hope that
there will be a couple recordings of flute concerti comming from
Mr. Galway in the near future. I have never had a problem with
classical artists doing what is now called "Crossover" I think
it gives them a much needed change of pace. After all one can
only play the classic flute liturature so much, and Sir James is
not the first solo artist to make such recordings. His
His performances of the selections on this CD are all quite good
to say the least. My favorites are the "Barcarolle" and "Annies
Song" and the Schubert "Ave Maria", which I think is the best
instrumental recording of this work since Isaac Stern's violin
recording for CBS. Klauspeter Siebel and the London Symphony
Orchestra do a wonderful job accompaning him in these works.
The recorded sound is more than acceptable and I can only hope
that this will be the first of many new James Galway CD's from
DG. Perhaps Sir James can do a disc or Two with the London
Mozart Players as well for DG too>

Album Description
From the creators of the successful and hugely popular "12"/80s" series, comes its prequel - "Extended Seventies" - a collection of Pop, Disco, Dance and New Wave . Features tracks that are classic and musically historical tracks from the era when the 12" single (and hence the extended mix!) was created and when dance music reigned supreme. * From a period when the 12" single evolved into the format of choice initially for DJs and rapidly crossed over commercially into the public at larges' domain, where the extended or longer version dance mix of your record of choice could be found and the disco dance-floor of your favourite club was re-created in your own home - the DJ and dancer alike sharing the era defining concept of the 12" single extended mix. * Seventies Dance and Disco music is now very much back in profile. This is the first all-encompassing, from Dance to New Wave, seventies extended mix compilation of its kind. Compiled onto 3 CDs with over 30 tracks and 200 minutes of musical pleasure. * Littered with classic artists and vintage songs , it's a triple-disc melting point sure to save you from online bidding wars or traipsing round dusty old record stores. Contains many extended mixes appearing for the first time on CD . Includes many rare and sought after versions only previously available after much searching on ebay! * Features tracks from Donna Summer - Love to Love You Baby, Sugarhill Gang - Rappers Delight ,Diana Ross - Love Hangover, Eddy Grant - Living on the Frontline, Double Exposure - Ten Percent , M - Pop Muzic, Sparks - Beat the Clock, Blondie - Heart of Glass, Three Degrees- TSOP, IAn Dury- Hit me WIth your Rhythm Stick , Flying Lizards-Money, LAmont Dozier - Goin Back to My Roots, Public Image - Death Disco , Tubeway Army - Are Friends Electric & many more !!!

breaking down borders.......2006-12-05
This compilation offers a few unique features that make it a rare find: unlike many compilations that seperate the genre, the compilers realize that New Wave and Disco were about breaking down borders, not setting them up. So we have three discs here in one box: chart hits of the time; more dance-oriented club classics (some of them fairly obscure); and the New Wave music of the time that was also played in the clubs.
I won't list all the tracks, but here are the special finds I don't have on other CDs, or would need to buy artist box sets to get: Diana Ross's 7:46 version of "Love Hangover," Shalamar's 6:06 "Take that to the Bank," and all 14:32 of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight."
The New Wave disc offers an unlikely treasure trove mix of artists such as Flying Lizards (very few offerings on CD), Lene Lovich (all but forgotten genius), Sparks (criminally under-appreciated West Coasters), and then the obvious but never boring choice of Blondie's "Heart of Glass."
If you're the sort of fan who bought the DgX versions of Diana Ross: Diana and Donna Summer: Bad Girls (to get the extra discs of remixes and alternative edits on the supplementary discs), then you are a serious dance fan and this set is right up your discoteque!
It reminds me of the Machine Soul compilation, which encompassed the 80s and 90s; in fact much of the music on this set, though not called "electronica" at the time, functions like a presage to that later style.
They've got to dig deeper for more rareties..........2006-08-21
3 discs of extended versions seems like a great idea...unfortunately, dedicated collectors have most likely found MOST of these mixes on numerous other compilations or full length CDs by the original artists. There are still SO many 70s 12" rareties that have never made their way to CD yet, so this is just a rehash, and more likely to appeal to those who are just beginning their collection of long versions on CD. On the plus side, the collection doesn't shy away from the LONGEST versions--for instance, the full near 17 minute version of Donna Summer, and it also gives a good mix of disco, funk, r&b and early new wave dance tracks. Track times and some individual notes:
CD1
1. love to love you baby...donna summer (16:46)
2. everybody dance...chic (8:25)
3. love hangover...Diana ross (7:46)

1. vertigo/relight my fire...dan Hartman (9:34)
2. is it all over my face...loose joints (11:33)

4. take that to the bank...shalamar (6:06)
5. dancer...gino soccio (8:25)
6. tsop...mfsb (5:41)
7. more more more...andrea true connection (6:15)
8. let's start the dance...bohannon (7:58) (this is a REMIX from a 1980s "reissue" single)

2. hit me with your rhythm stick...ian dury (5:25) (original extended version)
3. pop muzik...M (4:53) (the 12" version ends cold, so you actually don't get a lot of the ad lib vocal at the end of the original faded version)
4. heart of glass...blondie (5:46)
5. la vie en rose...grace jones (7:26)
6. are friends electric...tubeway army (5:20) (this is actually Gary Numan, it's just that he recorded this song under that "band" name)
7. lucky number...lene lovich (4:29) (this is a hot rarety! Never came across this extended remix on CD before! Very new wave dance sounding)
8. warm leatherette...normal (3:20)
9. money...flying lizards (5:43)
10. airport...motors (4:30)
11. death disco...public image ltd (6:41) (BIG treat. Wasn't even aware there was a long version of this track!)

SImply Untrue.......2006-08-16
The previous review is simply a gross falsification. I have been an obsessed opera fan for a long time, and Thomas Hampson is a truly special singer. He is not the possesor of the largest or most interesting voice, which he will tell you and indeed says so all the time. His commitment to text, his willingness to search out parts to fit his voice, and his dedication to art song make im invaluable to Americans as a ture Troubador. His light Baritone was ideally suited to Figaro and to Valentin and the art song he loves. He must stretch to sing Verdi, where his voice sounds dry and small but many singers have chanced Verdi at their peril, and his innate ablity to inhabit a song, here evidenced in Di Provenza overcomes fact that it is out of his fach. You misinformed opinion of Hampson is mean and strangly bitter. I love Opera, but I do not love every singer, which doesn't mean I debase their very artistic existance. I have seen Hampson live, and have loved him (in Thias) and somewhat disliked him (in Simon Boccanegra) As for him being pretentious, somwetimes I find him mannered, but always charming. SOmetimes Intellectualism can appear pretentious, but surely you wont hold an opera singer to the charge that he must be unintellectual. what a vitriolic review, please buy this Cd, it merits repeated listening to a true American SINGER,
an extra star for all the guest artists.......2006-05-08
The title of this album is an oxymoron. Or a sick joke. I can't decide. Sure he has made millions by luring the uninitiated listener into his web of deceit and conceit, but don't be fooled any longer. How fortunate Hampson has been to sing for and with great artists to shoulder his heavy load.
An Homage to a Great Artist.......2005-10-30
EMI is wisely creating a series of recordings to gather the moments of artists that showcase the very reasons they become so highly regarded. Usually these collections are produced late in careers or even posthumously, but in the case of THE VERY BEST OF THOMAS HAMPSON the artist is still one of the more active and premiere singers of our day. Yet while he doesn't still perform all of these inclusions, it is wonderful to have excerpts from various successful recordings to remind us of the artistry that Hampson represents.
The two disc set includes arias from operas: Rossini's 'Il barbière di Siviglia', von Weber's 'Euryanthe', Gounod's 'Faust', Massenet's 'Hérodiade', Bizet's 'Les Pêcheurs de perles' (in duet with Placido Domingo), Thomas' 'Hamlet', Verdi's 'Don Carlo', 'Il Travatore', 'Macbeth', 'La Traviata', and 'Falstaff', Korngold's 'Die Tote Stadt', and Wagner's 'Tannhäuser'.
But the rewards of a Hampson recording must include his impeccable career as a lieder stylist and on this recording are excerpts from Schumann's 'Dichterliebe', Schubert's 'Winterreise', Mahler's 'Rückert Lieder' and 'Das Lied von der Erde', as well as songs by Meyerbeer, Rossini, Grieg, Kalman, and Lehar. And very importantly there are examples of American songs that Hampson has always emphasized in his recitals. Works by Stephen Foster, and two extraordinary works with the brilliant accompanist Armen Guzelimian - 'An Old Song Re-sung' by Griffes and 'At Dawning' by Charles Wakefield Cadman - round out this fine survey.
Not usually a collector of such 'recombinations', for this listener this album is so very fine that it deserves the attention of all those who appreciate the artistry of Thomas Hampson - then and now. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
superb vocals.......2005-08-07
Mr.Hampson really gets the chance to showcase his wonderful baritone voice in this "Best of" collection which includes excellent selections from his various other CDs. I like the diversity of the selections featuring operatic arias, works from classical composers, and folk songs. For Thomas hampson fans, as well as fans of the baritone voice, this CD is for them.

A Star Shone all too briefly..........2005-10-09
April Lawton, whoever she was, was simply fantastic. I'm not going to sully her reputation by a gratuitous comparison of her with Fanny's June Millington, but I will say that they were easily the equal of any of their male counterparts in the early seventies. And if you can do the almost-impossible and just tune out (giggle) "multi-instrumentalist" Sullivan's "contributions" to "Red Sun" and just fixate on April Lawton here - wow. She was a wonder. And her "Bounty On My Table" is as great a secular song about her faith as was/is David Gate's "Do You Believe He's Coming" (which was released in Gates' first solo album). No, no flashy "wee-wee-diddly-SQUEECH" "lead guitar" histrionics here, just one very talented Woman's musical statement. Like I said, though, to get the full effect of Ms. Lawton's talent, you HAVE to tune out Tommy Sullivan on this thing - honestly, his stuff sounds like a demo tape for Lynyrd Skynyrd or worse...

Wynonna never fails to surprise. While anticipating a reunion tour with Mama Naomi Judd, the prodigal daughter ventures further than ever from mainstream country with her fifth solo album. Foremost among the curves she throws listeners is a version of "Help Me" that flatters Joni Mitchell's original with an uncanny imitation. Her album-ending rendition of "I Can't Wait to Meet You," borrowed from pop-soul supernova Macy Gray, sounds more like Rufus-era Chaka Khan. Then there's her revival of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' "Tuff Enough," which has more growl than bite, but features a spoken-word interlude that conjures Elvis in Vegas. Elsewhere, Wynonna seems most at home with a funky groove and a gospel lyric, like an acolyte of Aretha in the land of Patsy Cline. This limited-edition package includes a four-song EP recorded with Mama, adding blues-rock, Western swing, and even a pseudo-psychedelic novelty to the mix. --Don McLeese
Customer Reviews:
Very slick production, but it still doesn't quite deliver........2006-06-20
I was a bit disappointed when I bought this album a couple of years ago. I listened to it a couple of times and forgot it since. Now I found it and decided to give it another try. I still feel the same about it.
It's not country, and it's not quite rock and roll either. It's full of energy at times, and a very slick production, very professional. Considering the other reviews here, this obviously appeals to many listeners, but in my opinion it feels much too polished to be engaging. There's not much real feeling or heart in this album, and many of the songs are utterly forgettable. There are some good ones, but there's way too much filler material and most of the songs sound the same. It starts to get dull after the first few songs.
A Wynonna fan will of course want this album in their collection, and may love the album. But if you get a chance to listen to it in a music store before you buy it to see if this is in your taste, please do so. If you're new to Wynonna and have heard some of her older singles, this may not be what you're looking for and you'd be better off with her greatest hits CD "Collection".
She Rocks!!.......2003-06-10
Throughout the years, Wynonna has created her OWN kind of music - a style that can't be categorized, which is a big plus in my book. The opening song is one of the best, "Going Nowhere", a bouncy, summer-day fun song. I especially enjoyed "Chain Reaction" and "Tuff Enuff", which showcases her rocking side and I especially loved "Help Me", a Joni Mitchell song that is breath-takingly lovely and should make Joni smile with delight. I love that Wy can sing like a angel in heaven on one song and then the next song, she can totally rock out! While some of the other songs are a little weak to me, it is still very much worth your attention if you are a Wynonna fan. The Bonus CD has 4 new Judd songs: "Stuck in Love" is good, "Big Bang Boogie" is also good and both songs are entertainingly fun; but I never could quite get 'into' the other two tracks for some reason. As much as I love the Judds, I just prefer to listen to their amazing collection of CDs from the past rather than these new recordings here.
WYNONNA!.......2003-02-09
Man this woman can rock, I am very new to her music...and I don't listen to country hardly at all.... but this cd is a must have! "Going NoWhere" is the best track (in my opinion)! I want to hear more from her.
New Day Dawning - She's Back!.......2001-07-26
Wynonna Judd's first album of the 21st century is an event in and of itself, but the fact that it comes with a four-song EP featuring new music recorded with mom Naomi (the first such in over a decade) makes it particularly memorable. Wynonna's album continues her trademark mix of country, rock, soul, and a little gospel, with the soul more or less predominating; "New Day Dawning," for example, has a horn section straight out of a '60s Stax/Volt session, and the quietly percolating "I Can't Wait to Meet You," is actually co-written by neo-R&B revivalist Macy Gray. There are also two great covers, a faithful version of the Fabulous Thunderbirds '80s blues hit "Tuff Enuff" (the T-birds Kim Wilson guests on harp), and an astonishing recreation of Joni Mitchell's "Help Me," showing off an upper register that Wynonna has previously kept hidden quiet. The Judds reunion disc is a little low-key, compared to the album per se, but it's great fun, from the pun-filled creation of the world title song, to a heartfelt (but no less funny) psychedelic peace-and-love anthem ("The 60s Were the 90s Upside Down") complete with sitar and backwards guitar.
Solo/Reunion.......2001-07-26
This is Wy's first studio album since 1997's THE OTHER SIDE. On this album, the production is a little smoother and the vocals are even stronger. It's a little more laid back, but there are still the signature rockin songs, the tender ballads, the dreamy upbeat songs, everything you would expect from a Wynonna Judd album. The album starts off on with "Going Nowhere", in my opinion one of the best tracks, a shame that country radio didn't play it more. Hell its a shame country radio practically ignores Wynonna in favor of the pop-country singers. "Can't Nobody Love You (Like I Do) is classic Wynonna ballad sytle. She does a wonderful cover of the Joni Mitchell song "Help Me", very dreamy and floaty in a sense. Wynonna rocks it blues style on songs like "Chain Reaction", "He Rocks" and "Tuff Enuff". She shows the sensitive side on other ballads like "Who Am I Trying To Fool" and "Learning To Live With Love Again". The second disc is a reunion EP for the Judds, where Wynonna is reunited with her mother Naomi, and there are four tracks. The standout is "The 90's Was The 60's Turned Upside Down" which critisized the 90's for being too torpescent about important issues in that era. Its great to hear Naomi and Wy singing together again! But overall, Wynonna doesn't disapoint with this album. It pleases the masses, with something to offer for every fan. It's great to hear her singing again, because she's never sounded better.

What ??.......2006-12-10
The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!
Nice Voice, but not a nice person...(read on, pls.).......2006-01-07
Paul Robeson, who was brainwashed into
beleiving Communist rhetoric (which is
strange as hell for an Amer-I-can black
man). A good singing voice but all cover
songs! Come on, Paul!
A let down.......2004-09-24
I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.
The definitive Paul Robeson compilation.......2003-09-19
This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

You never know when beauty will break your heart.......2006-07-17
This was Thomas Hampson's debut album on EMI, a 1990 release that catapulted him much higher than his earlier recitals on Teldec. It comprises a rather scholarly collection of sentimental memorabilia. Each selection is a "platform song" that Victorians cherished from singers who varied operatic arias with sentimental popular stuff. (Was it Nellie Melba or Jenny Lind who interjected 'Home, Sweet Home' in the middle of the Marriage of Figaro?)
Yet as forgotten as platform songs are today, with the exception of a few Stephen Foster tunes like 'Ah, May the Red Rose Live Alway,' a folk song like 'Shenandoah,' and a brass-bound immortal like 'Roses of Picardy,' everything on this unique CD is ripe with emotion. I am not ashamed to say that I teared up the first twenty times I listened (compulsively) to this memento from a more innocent age.
One is transported back to the time and spirit of Kipling and empire, TR and the Rough Riders, and brave young dougboys marching off to their doom singing 'Over There.' I teared up just writing that sentence.
Songs Saved From Obscurity.......2001-03-27
There is a tremendous body of American songs which is yet to be fully appreciated. Thomas Hampson does us a favor in saving these gems from what might become obscurity. The songs on this disc are truly sentimental, bringing us from the highest of highs to the lowest of lows. I commend Hampson for his continued dedication to singing these songs which rival the art songs of any culture and are worthy to be heard, sung and recorded.
Charming songs, beautifully sung.......1999-06-09
This is not just an album of chestnuts. Hampson's love for the material shines through. His performance is always just right. His voice is warm, velvety, and wonderful! "In the Gloaming" and "Roses in Picardy" will bring you to tears, but my favorite is "Do not go, my love." Bravo, Tom!
