Clyde's Ride

Editorial Reviews
Matthew Kalinowski, UCSD Guardian, Thursday, January 29, 1998
Following an opening performance at last year's Sun God Festival and a win at the Belly Up Tavern's Band of the Year competition, the release of Clyde's Ride's self-titled debut album marks another significant step for the band. The album successfully captures the band's funk/R&B style. The harmonies and trade-offs between Sapico and the band's other vocalist, Lani Ludwig keep the vocals fresh and interesting. The rest of the band, comprised of Johnny Fong, Brian Yaspan, Perkin and Monahan, create a danceable vibe throughout. Taken individually, each of the album's nine songs can definitely hold its own. However in the scope of the entire record, all of the tunes begin to sound similar. Nevertheless, Clyde's Ride should be commended because they have avoided the all-too-familiar ska path in exchange for a more timeless musical style embodied in this solid debut effort.

From the Artist
We have to say that we are really happy with our first full length CD. We just hope that it is as fun for you to listen to as it was for us to make. Enjoy!

Album Description
This is the first full-length album from the 1998 San Diego Funk Band of the Year (San Diego Area Music Awards 1998) Clyde's Ride. The nine songs on the album represent the range of music that the band performs, from the full blown funk of Silver Dollar, to the classic smoke-filled lounge sound of I'm Not Through With You to the alternative tinged Bitter.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome CD, even better if you can see them live.......2001-10-16

This CD is great!! A friend recommended this band, and after seeing them live one time, I was hooked. I highly recommend this CD (and see them play, if you can) to anybody that likes funky dance music. It's great funk with some blues sounds here and there. I never get tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars some of the best.......2001-06-19

Clyde's Ride's first album truly shows the energy and effort that Lani and the other band members put into their passion of song wrighting. Their song "Silver Dollar" is one of my favorite on the album but not the only good song. With their mix of ska and soulish rock (a dave matthews band crossed with multiple ska bands) molds to nearly every music lover. Having known Lani Ludwig, one of the leading vocals, for many years I know that the music truely is her favorite and what is better than a band with good music that they love to play? Buy this record and listen to it over and over YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Not the same old stuff.......2000-06-11

These guys have a bit of everything in their music. Textures, layers, everybody going in different directions, then back together seamlessly. Cool but impassioned. Most interesting band I've heard in a long time. Buy two copies 'cause your friends will steal the first.

5 out of 5 stars This Band is a MUST SEE!.......1999-11-20

I've been a long time fan of Clyde's Ride, seeing them when they used to play parties in and around UC San Diego, and at countless bars since then. Let me tell you, if you love their CD (which I'm sure you will) then go see them live next time they cruise through your area. Their funky jamming and amazing vocals are a refreshing change from the blase music that we are inundated with by radio and videos. This music is good for the soul and awesome to groove to!

5 out of 5 stars Puts the "funk" into FUNKY.......1999-10-11

I guess this review is quite original in that all the others have been from America and I'm Irish. I was first introduced to the music of Clydes Ride when I was working in Luxembourg, by a friend of mine who use to hang out with them long b4 they made it big (thank you so much Deborah Mac.) With the majority of CDs you have to listen to them over and over again to get a real feel for the music, but not with this one. Upon hearing the killer tracks on this CD I became addicted and just couldn't get enough of it. Lani's voice is amazing and she makes love to the lyrics which the music caresses so vibrantly to form a musical orgy. Funky, loud, bold, big sounds complement happy, sad, angry lyrics. If you have any respect for music whatsoever, you'll go out and buy this now. A must for anyone who is serious about their music collection. Be impressed, BE VERY IMPRESSED.[Really needs to be released in Europe on a big scale]
