Calypso’s roots go back to the African slaves brought to these islands to work on the large sugar plantations. The Africans, robbed of all other links to family and heritage, sang songs that were a series of chants with a short chorus. These songs united the slaves whilst they worked setting a common rhythm and pace for the task at hand. The music is the voice of social conscience throughout the Caribbean touching on topics ranging from politics, sex and social humor.

There has not been a quality Calypso compilation since 1990’s “Calypso Season” on Island Records. ‘CALYPSO HEAT’ showcases the stars of the genre such as the world’s #1 calypso artist SUPERBLUE, genre revolutionary ANDRE TANKER and the much celebrated SHADOW.
