Enjoy the OTHER things on it besides "Beach Blanket".......2004-05-01
A great bio piece someone else put together on Donna Loren earlier; but come on! Knocking the bulk of this collection because it happens to also cover the "Beach Blanket Bingo" soundtrack is a bit short-sighted. Loren's (available recorded) singing credits are in their own right pretty outstanding vocally. But face it, many of the songs in "BBB" were pretty crummy to begin with, no matter who did them ("Fly Boy", "I am my Ideal", "These are the Good Times")! This collection is worth having for the better songs - "Blowing out the Candle", "Ten Good Reasons", "Only Hurts when I Cry", "I'll Never Change Him". Also her versions of "Call Me", "If you Really Love Me", "Smokey Joe's" etc.; and the downright silly, whimsical numbers like "I'm in love with the Ticket Taker" and "Johnny's Got Something". I hope there will eventually be a further, more thorough release of Loren's other works that also include some of her "Shindig" performances like "Wedding Song", "You've Got Personality", etc.. Lastly, in my own "fan follow-up" search on Loren's whereabouts, she does have a clothing line in Hawaii with its own website. I don't know if she maintains the site herself, but speaking as a "new generation" fan, she doesn't seem to respond to people writing in. By contrast, another fave of mine Diane Renay sent me a nice response the very same day when I wrote her a fan letter email. To me that little extra effort means a lot!
GOOD CD, BUT I AGREE WITH WHAT IS ALREADY POSTED.......2003-06-14
This is a great collection of Donna Loren's songs. I LOVED the Beach Blanket Bingo Movie and some of the songs from that movie were great. I do wish "It Only Hurts When I Cry" was kept as a ballad since it's impact is lost in this uptempo version (or at least have both versions on the CD). It is very 60's sound and similar to Lesley Gore's albums of the same time frame.
Great Anticipation - but - buyer beware...............2002-09-25
Donna Loren - who is an interesting story, more on her below - appeared in the non-speaking but singing role of "Donna" in four of the Beach Party movies. She briefly appears in a duet in the second (Muscle Beach Party) and perfomed does solos in three others.
Compared to most female teen celebrities of the 60s, Donna was the proverbial renaissance girl. Only nineteen when she first appeared in the Beach Party series, she was already an experienced singer, model, actress and clothing designer.
Prior to her Beach Party appearances, Donna had already spun a moderately successful career as a teen singer into a lucrative role as the "celebrity spokesmodel" for Dr. Pepper, and continued in those roles even after she started appearing in the AIP movies. On that tangent, think movie product placement deals are a recent trend? Think again - everyone sitting in the "Big Daddy's" club scenes in Muscle Beach Party just happens to have a bottle of -- guess what? (hint: think "Donna Loren...as spokesmodel for......") -- sitting in front of them. But Donna didn't stop there: in 1965, she started appearing in an ongoing singing guest spot on ABC's Shindig and even managed to cram in a guest star role (as Robin's girlfriend) on the Batman TV show. She also liked to design clothing and sew, and in 1964 spun that interest into a spokesperson deal with the Simplicity Pattern Company.
As far as Donna's recording career, it was a short one, running from the early to mid 60's and involved the release of scores of singles on a number of labels (the only album was the Capitol "Beach Blanket Bingo" LP). The material is hard to characterize, ranging from bubble gum pop ("I'm In Love With The Ticket Taker") to the grand diva-ish ("Everytime We Touch") to weird "let's invent the latest dance fad" stuff ("Do The Zonk"). Suffice to say she had an excellent but under-challenged voice; listening to her recordings of generally forgettable material, one is left wishing she had come under the wing of better agents and producers, ones who might have taken her down riskier but more substantive paths (case in point: Atlantic Records took such a risk in 1969 when they shipped fading, outdated pop diva Dusty Springfield down to Memphis to record with classic blues talent, the result being "Dusty in Memphis," a pop masterpiece that most reviewers now label as one of the greatest albums of the entire decade.)
Which leads to discussion of this CD.
While it contains some other material, most of the songs on it are from Donna's "Donna Loren Sings songs from Beach Blanket Bingo" (Capitol, released October 1965). While Buena Vista used the four Beach Party movies as an opportunity to produce Annette releases, they for whatever reason passed (or were possibly outbid) on Beach Blanket Bingo. As a result, the fifth film in the series -- and considered by most critics to be the best - was snapped up by Capitol, who had in their arsenal multi-talented Donna, who was presumably chomping at the bit for a shot at an LP. So one sits down with great anticipation to listen to Donna Loren Sings Songs From Beach Blanket Bingo.
However, that anticipation readily turns into disappointment.
This is because what appeared intriguing ends up being a conflicting listen: on the one hand, Donna was a much more capable singer than Annette, one with a unique style that mixed a strong, confident alto with emotion. On the other hand, management at Capitol clearly didn't know what to do with her or this material. Unlike Annette's carefully produced Buena Vista records (no matter how "silly" the content, Disney Managing Music Director Tutti Camarata always did it well), Donna's LP sounds like it was made in a hurry by people with little experience in guitar-based pop. And the results are frustrating to listen to.
In essence, the album was a huge waste of Donna's potential: the arrangements are unnecessarily busy, with overdone orchestration and chorus, and adding insult to injury everything is always played a little too fast. The result is a breathy, growling Donna who sounds like she's working much too hard to compete with it all. Wonderful Styner-Hemrick ballads like "It Only Hurts When I Cry" and "New Love" - which sounded great in the movie -- turn into blaring, overproduced yawns on the LP. Uptempo numbers like "Fly Boy" become hyper-speed pop, to the point where they are literally fatiguing to listen to. Frankly, the only half-way decent cut on the entire album is her version of the Hondell's The Cycle Set (sadly, their great original version of this song never appeared on any their records).
What makes all this even more annoying is the fact Capitol was simultaneously producing some excellent female pop. As example, just a few months before Donna's album, Capitol released Jody Miller's Queen of the House LP, her second record and in my opinion one of the best pop albums made by any American female singer during the mid 60s (due not only to Miller's obvious talent but also some outstanding production work by the legendary Billy Strange). If only Donna had received the same treatment!
Donna Loren Sings songs from Beach Blanket Bingo was released as Capitol 2323 (mono) and ST 2323 (stereo). At this time, there is also this compilation CD of Donna Loren material (orginally released in 1997), which includes the entire stereo version of this LP. If you are looking for an original 1965 LP copy of this abulm, understand they still do appear on online auctions, in fact copies come up on the web auction sites relatively frequently (most in mono, stereo is rare). Note that despite all the issues mentioned above, this LP has become a big, hot collectible, likely because of the wonderful close-up of a gorgeous twenty-one year old Donna on the cover.
IT WAS ABOUT TIME.......2002-08-29
IT WAS ABOUT TIME THAT THIS C.D. WAS RELEASED. YES, DONNA LOREN WAS VERY TALENTED AND I WAS GLAD THAT "BLOWING OUT THE CANDLES" WAS INCLUDED. I REMEMBERED HER SINGING IT ON "SHINDIG" WHILE THE BLOSSOMS DID THEIR VERSION OF "YOU'LL NEVER GET TO HEAVEN" (A DIONE WARWICK SONG).I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH A PREVIOUS REVIEWER THAT ANNETTE FUNICELLO WHO ALSO RECORDED SOME OF THESE SONGS WAS A "NO-TALENT". SHE WAS WONDERFUL AND I WISH THAT AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL WOULD RELEASE HER SONGS FROM "THUNDER ALLEY" AS WELL. LET'S ALL WRITE TO MGM WHO HAS THE RIGHTS TO THEM. THANK YOU WILLIAM RADCLIFFE (ANOTHER REVIEWER) FOR THAT INFO!
Donna, Finally on CD!!.......2002-07-25
Although i was initially disappointed with the lp release of the songs from the film "Beach Blanket Bingo", i had to give Capitol credit as they knew Buena Vista would not release a soundtrack album. A big blunder on Disney's part, and also on American International, who had the capability to release the original tracks from the film on either Vee Jay Records or Tower Records (a subsidiary of Capitol), 2 labels that delt with the film company in the past, and present. Upon hearing the lp, it was obvious that Les Baxter's work was absent, and sounding like a full orchestra, H.B. Barnum's work was very much out of place with the 'teen' star, almost making her sound like Anita Bryant. The cd here is good for one reason or another, mostly for the hard to find tracks that are not easy to assemble elsewhere in a short period of time. For the soundtrack itself, i would rather pass and just make a cassette of the original soundtrack from the film, edit the background and burn the songs onto cd, which is the only way to get the songs you want. Maybe writing to MGM could help, since that studio now owns the rights to all of American International's product, and could maybe make a new soundtrack from the film with the master tapes (which still exist). I am sure that would not be a problem. Otherwise, this cd is the only alternative.

Broken Hearts, Awash With Rye.......2002-08-03
So people ask me what my favourite band is? "Well, Lullaby For the Working Class," I reply, sensing the confusion clogging the air. "No,what is your favourite band, not your favourite song." Well, to cunningly incorporate this anecdote into this review, I can simply state: Lullaby For the Working Class: Good Morning." How's this for an opening vignette?: "Good Morning, said the sun to the building, you look like you've been up all night, waiting for my answer. There's no more room in heaven, but when you crumble down, your bricks will lay foundations for new structures, roads and towns." And thus sets the tone for the album; the redemption of the heart set to a mellow and melodic tune that will have you reaching for your bourbon and itching to write paeons of pleasant satisfaction. Lyrically, it's as if your favourite poet sang for your favourite band..."words drip from lips hardly parting,""the laundromat, the liqour store are hibernating...this winter's bayonet." A heartwarming, truly beautiful album which does, as the title suggests, leave you feeling "Blanket Warm."
the most incredible break-up album ever.......1999-10-18
nothing at all is left to say but goodbye.-lullaby// if that isn't one of the most truthful and emotionally bare statements of loss, i don't know what is. Getting this album just shortly before i broke up with a girl from what was my most intense relationship thus far, i'd have to argue that this album is more a sweeping, poetic cry-in-your- vermouth/beer masterpiece which chronicles the fall and dissillusionment of a relationship, than something to just doze off to on a sleepy day. although at times it does have a beutiful current of melodious stringed instruments reminiscent of a midwestern folk band from a forgotten time, it rides through the broken heart and the battered spirit with such subtle intensity as to have the listenener take on the states of emotion and personal pain of the singer/persona. The album is in a sense one song, which progresses through the first half with stories of lonely lives lack of compassion and light. Halfway through one is faced with an aside which i consider to be one of the most romantic ditties not recorded by van morrison. After this comes the second half, which begins with a story of a troubled and alienated soul whose only solace can be found in sleeping with the radio on. As we listen to the rest of the album, we realize that all this sturm und rang that has come before stems from the persona's relationship with a woman who was both his queen and his soul-destroyer. By the final climax, one is left screaming along with the persona against a girlfriend who never was true or sincere. the album ends with a soft, comforting call for the persona (and the affected listener) to forget the weight of this world and all the disillusionment in it, and to just rest under a blanket warm. note: this album is a great breakup album for anyone, girls and guys. ORiginal. Moving beyond belief. This album cries for our sorrows.
almost-orchestral country sleepytime music.......1998-09-01
Lullaby for the Working Class is one hell of a long name for a band, but I forgive them because they write wonderful, organic, lush, and almost childlike songs that are perfect for putting a baby to sleep on your chest while sitting in a rocking chair. The album's opener, "Good Morning," gets one ready for what will follow throughout: a prettily picked acoustic guitar melody, which gets built upon eventually by banjos, bells, violins, and drums. Songs open with soft strums and xylophones, chirping crickets, and all sorts of happy, sleepy sounds. The lyrics are a bit oblique at times, but the music is rich and organic enough (and loud enough in the mix) that one doesn't get overwhelmed by their periodic nonsensical pomposity. Which differs from a similar band, Lambchop, who play absolutely stunning orchestral country that gets mixed quietly below the smirking smart-ass-isms of frontman Kurt Wagner, whose cleverness ruins the otherwise beautiful mood. If Lambchop ever release an instrumental version of "How I Quit Smoking," it may very well rival "Pet Sounds" for top spot on my D.I.D. list. For now, when I'm in the mood for lovely, multi-instrument country naptime music, I'll reach for "Blanket Warm."

Possibly the finest postpunk troubadour out there, this San Francisco-area singer-songwriter has long been one of the rock underground's most vocal baseball fans (as evidenced by the title of this disc). That obsession isn't chronicled here--although it does permeate the Baseball Trilogy EP she recorded with the SF Seals, a backing band named after a famed minor league franchise--but Manning's vulnerable vocals drive home her cutting, introspective lyrics with power to spare. Songs like "Sympathy Wreath" (which appears twice) and "Someone Wants You Dead" rank with Manning's finest work, and as a bonus the CD appends her 1988 solo debut, the powerful Lately I Keep Scissors, in its entirety. --David Sprague
Customer Reviews:
18 songs: all hits, no errors.......2006-01-17
While it lacks the epic scope of what I think's her best album, "1212," this double-header of a disc sounds satisfyingly consistent and, considering a probably miniscule budget, strong in both the guitar and the vocal departments. Barbara Manning's singing style may leave the uninitiated rather nonplussed. Like Mary Timony, she offers her musings in an unadorned, straightforward approach; but Manning is less willful or idiosyncratic. She lacks any attitude but her own, and in refusing to play into whatever hipness could have anointed her the latest singer-songwriter, she keeps my and her respect.
The tunes, while direct, have that wonderful hint of New Zealand-Flying Nun undertow that moves them along winningly. These tunes, especially "Sympathy Wreath"--which merits two at-bats here--hold up well and the pace does not slacken over 18 songs, a rarity for any artist. It's good to see that this is still in print, and I urge you to support her and the label with your purchase of a sadly under-promoted talent.
A Must-Own Album.......2003-10-08
Barbara Manning has her quirks. She worships baseball (her non-solo act band is named after defunct minor league San Francisco Seals), is excessively fond of semi-obscure New Zealand bands like The Bats, and as a previous reviewer pointed out, doesn't have the best self esteem. Still, I'll take her any day over the hoards of angry, self-obsessed, art school dropout female singer-songwriters currently populating the scene (and you know who you are).
This beautiful album (actually two packaged together) is loaded with great pop songs sung in Manning's sweet, occasionally bitter voice. As a songwriter, she favors pop hooks ("Straw Man," "Sympathy Wreath," "Scissors," "Somewhere Soon") but isn't afraid to explore the less obvious in songs like "Make It Go Away" and "Mark E. Smith & Brix." The latter gives you some idea of her influences which include The Fall, along with Brian Eno, The Clean and, oddly enough, Hoagy Carmichael.
Manning likes to pay tribute to these influences and this CD features several covers--a nice version of Smoking Her Wings by The Bats' Robert Scott and several by former 28th Day bandmate Cole Marquis. But her own songs are the standouts, particularly Scissors, a song that reels between self-blame and good-riddance anger--all against an infectious beat. "Someone Wants You Dead" is a mystery of a song that reminds me in its eerie meaning of Freedy Johnston's "This Perfect World." Finally, "Talk All Night" is a gorgeous acoustic number that you'll want to play well, all night.
This is a great introduction to Barbara Manning and an essential American indie-rock album. Listeners interested in more of Manning should also check out her solo 1212 and the S.F. Seals album Truth Walks in Sleepy Shadows.
Part of my rotation for 10 years (often on 3 days rest!).......2001-12-06
(...) In what I believe are her first 2 "solo" albums (after World of Pooh, which you should definitely check out if you can find it in an antique store that carries vinyl), Barbara Manning proved herself to be a clever songwriter, bursting with catchy hooks, well-crafted indie pop sensibilities, and moody (yet melodic) soundscapes. I first heard this disc as a college DJ in 1991 (which, unfortunately, is where much of Barbara's fan base is located), and I've played it at least once a week for the last 10 years. It's just superb. (...)
She Hits, She Scores.......2001-10-15
One Perfect Green Blanket is the ideal introduction to Barbara Manning, long one of the Bay Area's finest singer/songwriters. The CD includes eight tracks, three of which were previously released on compilations and flexi-discs ("Smoking Her Wings," "Don't Rewind," and "Someone Wants You Dead") plus an additional 10 from 1988's Lately I Keep Scissors. "Smoking Her Wings" is a sublime, cello-laden cover of New Zealand band the Bats' original (from The Law of Things). "Mark E. Smith & Brix", an ode to the leader of The Fall and his ex-wife/sometime collaborator, is done in the minimalistic style of the Young Marble Giants. All of the songs are quite catchy, but "Scissors," "Every Pretty Girl," and "Something You've Got (isn't good)" are particularly infectious.
The title reflects Manning's love of baseball. "One perfect green blanket"--as depicted on the cover--is a baseball diamond (the CD includes a broadcast sample from the San Francisco Giants Western Division win). Manning would explore this enthusiasm further as a member of the SF Seals on the 1993 EP, The Baseball Trilogy (featuring tributes to Joe DiMaggio, Denny McLain, and Dock Ellis).
Get your hands on this cd any way you can.......1999-07-19
This "Green Blanket/Scissors" cd is amazing. Angry, sharp lyrics, wonderful melodies, great singing. Barbara Manning doesn't play the virgin/whore card that her erstwhile label-mate, Liz Phair, does, but she deserves all the credit in the world for introducing an original, remarkable voice to popular music.

This album rocked me! It has all the elements of The B-52's, The Cramps and that surf guitar dude....(sorry, forget his name). Droppin' The Curl should not be listened to while driving - could result in some police interest! Bad Boys, Bad Girls makes me wanna dance HARD and shake my head A LOT!! Sunshine is the tune of summer this year, I think!!!

A Great Soundtrack For a Great Movie!.......2006-04-26
This is probably one of the most complete scores you will ever find for an item, and the songs are all well-written and unique from each other. I will review a few specific tracks:
1. Main Title-The Brave Little Toaster has one of the creepiest intros, panning through the dark woods to find an empty cabin full of seemingly lifeless appliences. This haunting track works very well with it.
3. Blanket's Dream-I'm not keen on them leaving in the dialogue here, as you don't get the whole fantasy scene unless you've seen it. Still, Lampy and Radio's amusing lines are here, which is good.
4. The Air Conditioner Blows-For anyone who was terrified of this scene as a kid, this frantic track does the whole thing justice, with a grim ending.
6. Again, the dialogue and sound effects are left in, but they actually help the humor in this track. Lampy's voice is awsome.
8. City of Light-This is my favorite of all the songs. It's a bright and optimistic ballad-ish song when the appliences set out. They're all good singers, even though Lampy speaks a few of his lines. Very catchy.
10. The Pond-This one has to be heard to be believed. It's sound effects of the pond create lovely music, and the highlight is the opera singing fish (don't ask).
11. Toaster's Dream-I just have to say, this is a really scary track to accompany the scene that probably scared me the most when I was younger. That clown...
19. It's a 'B' Movie-This is a spooky number, and will remind you of Rocky Horror Picture Show. Preformed by the junkshop appliences (and a bit by the core group), it's the first showstopper.
22. Into the City-A Beautiful instrumental version of City of Light.
23. Cutting Edge-A techno number sung by the mean appliences that replaced the old ones. It has great lyrics and sounds just like some commercials from that era.
25. Worthless-A disco style song belted out by the poor cars at the junkyard before they all meet their "deaths" at a trash compactor. Catchy and sad at the same time, and a favorite of many.
26. Finale-A seven minute long song. Ranges from hopeful to frantic to a happy ending.
27. End Title-A very happy song to end the soundtrack.
Buy it now. It's everything you've ever dreamed of on the edge...and more!
