These songs have been bouncing around my kitchen for the last handful of years. Since they were written for my own entertainment (or should I say catharsis?) they're naturally very private little vignettes. But I don't mind you listening in.

Under the name of The Worry Knot, singer-songwriter Michael Hughes releases his first collection of songs--echoes in minor keys on life and love that come back around as highly personal, vulnerable and brave tracks on this debut, "Under Trees."

"Do you remember that little bed on Highland Street? We’d get all tangled up and free," writes a searching Hughes in "That Place." "Help me find that place again / I’m dying here with you so near / And there’s so many things between us."

Hughes is clearly staring himself down in the mirror, playing and singing in a way that cuts very close to the bone.

The most sure tracks are "Rain Keeps Falling" with its accessible guitar work and "Lazy" with its sardonic refrain of "So what, so what?" Indeed, Hughes’ lyrics seem to paint pictures of people who are decidedly unsure, perhaps a bit like you and me. And while he paints canvasses in shades of blue and gray there remains some hope, some faith in love to save the day.

"Under Trees" is Michael Hughes’ first quiet hello in the dark; a portrait of an artist surfacing, about to emerge. The playing is necessarily understated and the poetry is superb!

I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

    Copenhagen's Efterklang make a welcome return with a magical re-introduction to their sound--the release of Under Giant Trees, a limited edition five-track mini-album in deluxe packaging. Recorded in the band's studio, Under Giant Trees evolved somewhat unconventionally. Returning to Copenhagen at the close of 2005, Efterklang's five core members set to work recording the foundations of these new songs, with a view to this stand-alone release. Extra vocals, brass and strings were added, with Edda and Hildur (from Icelandic quartet Amiina) recording further violin parts. Using musicians who had performed with the band on tour, the idea was to capture the songs as they had been played live, retaining the free spirit of their origin. These were uncharted waters for Efterklang, who usually create songs in the studio as they record. The results are mesmerising--at once vibrant, otherworldly, poignant and panoramic.

      Sibelius wrote a large number of songs, but they are not terribly well known, nor are there very many great ones. Like his piano music, he wrote them primarily for the money. Nevertheless, there are some masterpieces, particularly the lengthy orchestral ballad, "The Rapids- Rider's Brides," which has its own opus number (33), and which directly foreshadows the music of the evocative tone poem Luonnotar. Sibelius and several other composers orchestrated a fair number of his songs, which is a good thing because his piano writing was seldom very effective, his musical ideas being naturally orchestral in nature. This award-winning collection offers 18 orchestral arrangements of Sibelius's finest efforts in the genre, excellently sung by Jorma Hynninen, the great Finnish baritone of his generation. The music is well worth knowing. --David Hurwitz

      Many of these songs were not originally written with an orchestral accompaniment in mind. But orchestra brings out new colors in these works, that I hadn't realized before when listening to them with piano accompaniment.

      Hynninen sings beautifully throughout, and is in my opinion at his best in these songs. He has a special kind of light high baritone voice, that doesn't always work well in opera, but in Sibelius it works fantastically. Understanding the language and the cultural background of these songs helps as well.

                By rights, Sibelius should be up there with the big boys--Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Wolf--in the song stakes. He has such a formidable ability to convey the meaning of a text through his music, transporting the listener into another world. Here, we find the young Swedish mezzo, Katerina Karneus, tackling some of his greatest offerings in the genre (the Op. 50 set in particular). Karneus first made waves when she won Cardiff Singer of the World in 1995, and in this repertoire she's entirely at home, particularly as most of Sibelius's songs use Swedish texts, the language of his childhood. Her rich, creamy mezzo is expressive but never overbearing, and it's particularly effective in such numbers as "Sigh, sedges, sigh," which demands brilliance on the part of the pianist as well as the singer. That she's versatile is demonstrated by her mastery of songs as dissimilar as the pent-up, glowering "Watersprite," the stately grandeur of "The March Snow," and the rapturous "First Kiss." And in those later, German text Op. 50 songs, where Sibelius's language has become even more economical, even more potent, Karneus is at one with the tone of supposed lost love in "In the field a maiden sings" and the sparse, Schubertian "The Silent Town." Throughout, Julius Drake is splendid, and the recording brings the performers comfortably into your living room. --Harriet Smith
