New Wave Undercover
Editorial Reviews
Album Description
It was a time of skinny ties, flamboyant outfits, teased hair, flashy MTV videos and in-your-face attitude. Ah, a fond reflection of that priceless stamp in time called the New Wave era of popular music. It was a time well over a decade and a half ago when boy bands were kept to a strict minimum, grunge music hadnt been dreamed of and hardcore rap was still in its infancy and peppered with harmless naïvety. Synthphony Records is proud to officially announce the 2 CD Set Cover Compilation titled "New Wave Undercover" featuring Modern Synthpop bands covering over 30 songs.

Very dissapointed.......2005-01-09
I LOVE Big Counrty, seen em live, bought the LP's in the 80's and replaced them with Cd's in the 90's and later bought CD's with songs that never touched vinyl. I was really looking forward to this CD, but unfortunately it stunk-Period. Bad originals, coverded badly. No emotion like on their other songs/albums. I sold it on ebay-good riddance to bad rubbish.I recommend everything else they've done, esp. Restless Natives & Rarities, Why the long face, The Crossing(classic) and W/out a Safety net(live). Long live Stuart!
Must Have.......2003-01-24
Must have CD for Big Country fans....
If you like Big Country, you gotta have this!!.......2002-02-28
Oh my goodness I just listened to this cd for the first time and it is so good! Amazing. What a good multitalented band wow! This remake albumn contains a diverse blend of songs with 1 thing in common; Big Country rocking out to the the max! I'm Eighteen by Alice Cooper is a standout as is Don't Fear the Reaper (which is kinda creepy all things considered.) The guitar in Reaper is worth the cost of the cd alone. I tell no lies. I was also most impressed by Paranoid where Stuart does a mean Ozzy. Who would have thunk it? No joke that you may not need to listen to the originals of these songs any further. If you are on the fence about this CD, get off because it is all good.
Better Than The Originals.......2001-08-02
This album is well worth a look at. Even though I have heard the originals previously, I think that Stuart Adamson does a better job than the original singers. Alice Cooper should take some lessons from Adamson who does a better version with, "I'm Eighteen", and "Teenage Lament". The Blue Oyster Cult's "Don't Fear The Reaper" and Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" are done with perfection. My wife thinks Lou Reed's "Vicious" is better here than on his album. This album is a great collection of the greats of years gone. A must for anyone that likes great rock and roll.
A Great and Versatile Effort from a Great and Versatile Band.......2001-05-22
I hadn't heard Alice Cooper's "Teenage Lament" in a long time, so when I gave this CD its first spin and that song came on, I was very surprised to find how much I'd missed it. Now, I listen to it endlessly. Truth be told, since I've heard and grown accustomed to Big Country's version, I don't even care to hear Cooper's version anymore.
When this disc is great, it's phenomenal. Their version of Black Sabbath's "Paranoid" blew me away and Bowie's "Cracked Actor" also received stellar treatment. Hardcore fans might've already heard the live version of Smokey Robinson's "Tracks of My Tears" and Roxy Music's "Prairie Rose" from earlier releases. It's great to finally hear that stuff on a well mastered CD.
Let's see, Fleetwood Mac's "Oh Well," Blue Oyser Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper," the traditional "Killiecrankie," there are so many inspired songs contained on this CD, it's truly difficult to stop listening. Stuart Adamson's voice adapts to every song he sings, and the band as a whole, with its consistent and inspired playing, rocks as hard as it want to.
I don't want to forget bassist Tony Butler. Hats off to him for a great lead vocal on Canned Heat's "On the Road Again." Again, the band behind him rocks hard from the first note. Big Country breathed new life into this old warhorse when they recorded back in the early '90's.
Keep those CDs coming, fellas. By the way, when are you guys going to get back together? Let me be the first to know -- and tour America!

You can't go wrong!.......2003-12-06
This CD is great!!! I just had to write a review on it. It's got some of the best new wave songs, covered by the new synthpop groups that I'm really getting into. Don't kid yourself, these indie bands are in no way amateur, they are just as good if not better than what you hear on the radio. Plus you get to hear German versions of a couple of these songs, such as Alphaville's Forever Young. All I have to say is: YOU CAN"T GO WRONG!!!
Save your money.......2002-07-26
I love 80's new wave. But this isn't the CD to buy if your looking for a good compilation. Alot of amatuer stuff here.
Best tracks in my opinion are "Cruel Summer" by Philtron and "Unveiling the Secret" by Rational Youth. Worst Tracks are "Major Tom" by Chiasm and "Blue Monday" by Silent Promises.
There are a few other decent tracks but nothing to justify the money spent.
Almost the Worst CD I ever purchased.......2002-01-31
If you would like to buy a CD of Great New Wave songs sung by what sounds like professional German karaoke singers than this is the CD for you! What a mistake! The only thing good about this CD is that I can now track down the original groups from the CD insert and buy the proper versions of these song. I'm putting this CD on the auction block to salvage some of my loss.
this is a great buy for new wave and synth pop fans.......2002-01-09
This 2-cd set will keep you occupied for months. Overall, the bands involved in this tribute to 80's new wave do a good job of creating fresh mixes of old favorites. There are only three or four straight copycat tracks (namely the awful covers of "Cruel Summer" and "Tainted Love"... two songs that are sorely overplayed and should have been left off this compilation), and if you skip those you should thoroughly enjoy New Wave Undercover. My favorite tracks are the ones where the artists took the most liberty and created completely new arrangements. This allows the listener to look at these songs with a fresh perpective, and updates the sound in order to appeal to a new generation without alienating those of us who remember the 80s. ;) My favorite mixes are "Imagination" (beautifully crafted by Intervox as a tribute to Clan of Xymox), "Boy" (redone as a synth-acoustic feminist anthem by Obyscre), and the electronica-dance-house take on "True Faith" by Infam. This is a cd that you can drive or dance to, and really helps pass the time in your cubicle. I highly recommend this CD to all of the former goths and new wavers out there... you won't regret buying this one!
