Editorial Reviews After moving to San Francisco in 1974, Blaise played in a group headed by the great jazz sax player Noel Jewkes. In the late 70s and early 80s, Blaise enjoyed making records with a number of punk banks, most notably the post punk industrial group Minimal Man. After studying electronic music at Mills College, Oakland and City College, San Francisco with John Bischoff and the League for Automatic Music, Blaise broadened his musical horizon even further by becoming involved in theatrical productions and sound installations. He then started singing classical music and performed with the St. Ignacious Church choir for many years. For the past ten years, Blaise has been supporting himself by writing music for T.V. and radio commercials and features, including the music for the KQED production Livelihood hosted by Will Durst. In the last few years, he has performed on and produced records by Jon Tchicai, Kris Force (Amber Asylum), Sleepwalker and Saliva. His first CD self titled Blaise Smith features performances by Jon Tchicai (who has accompanied John Coltrane, Archie Shepp, Yoko Ono), Susan Maumu (Blue Rubies), and Kris Force (Amber Asylum), with David Phillips on pedal steel guitar (who has accompanied P.J. Harvey, Frank Black), Irish ballad singer Rebecca Marculescue and whistle player Todd Denman. There are also two songs that feature string arrangements with the Paolo String Quartet (one of which is track 13, the title song for the short film The Hunger Artist). His second and latest CD titled Medicate was produced by Desmond Shea who has recorded and mixed songs for Paula Frazier, Mark Eitzel, Old Joe Clarks and other roots artists. Blaise lives in Oakland and enjoys hanging out at home with his wife and artist Jo Ford and their son, Emmet.
